Posted: 27 Aug 2018 08:35 AM PDT Hey there, I just finished a website for my family's coffee shop. The site is one html file that has a small about us section, menu section, and then a footer. I am hosting the site using a droplet at Digital Ocean. My question is, how do I make it so my mom can go in adjust what items are on the menu without touching the code since she doesn't know how? I was mid-purchase when SEDO.com purchased a domain and made it premium - Posted: 27 Aug 2018 02:02 PM PDT this got deleted from /r/legaladvice because hacking IP address for monetary gain is apparently legal. I am beyond angry so I apologize if this is confusing I will try to keep it short. I had a great idea for a domain name and, while visiting whois.com and name.com the domain name use.art went from 15. US dollars to a "premium domain" in a matter of two minutes. while I was on whois/ SEDO and name.com - SEDO bought a cheap domain I was attempting to purchase and had that exact same domain in mind? If abuse wasn't involved then I just witnessed a miraculous act of God. Obviously this is an abuse of power on SEDO's part - after chatting with whois.com, chat man basically said SEDO.com has it available as premium. They used my IP address to see what I was attempting to buy and then bought it while I was trying to check out. I was only on their website to see how much they were gouging people for usefulart.com Can I do anything besides warn the rest of the world (don't even have them up and latent in your browser.) Where can I report SEDO abuse (whois says not them...) I have screenshots of both use.art is available for 14.97 and unavailable. - *SEDO bought use.art while I kept getting white screen of death. They hacked my IP address to buy something I wanted and I think you all could benefit from knowing SEDO.com SUCKS. */ TL;Dr: Trying to purchase use.art and before my browser could cache the domain "became unavailable" SEDO.com are thieving jerks. Idk if it's allowed but I will link to the screenshots if it is/ if you care/if this doesn't get deleted too [link] [comments]

Testing with Enzyme, Jest etc. Few questions; Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:31 AM PDT So i need to learn React JS to skill up a bit for a few projects at work and I have been given a few VERY simple projects (like fizzbuzz and interview style questions) as practice for organizing and creating modules and test cases. I am pretty chilled with HOW testing works; and how they are laid out etc, but my main worry is what specifically i should be testing. My ignorance may be showing a little here but why would you bother testing a dom component has rendered? Why wouldn't it? Looking for some very general pointers here about what aspects of a component such be tested and how one goes about it. Thanks [link] [comments]
College Class (Algorithm vs Data Structure) Posted: 27 Aug 2018 02:32 PM PDT Good evening everyone, I have the chance to take a course at a local college. Which course would benefit me the most in the general path of web development. I appreciate any input and advice I can get. Algorithm course description: This course provides an introduction to the analysis, design, and implementation of software solutions to simple problems: developing standard algorithms for performing a bubble sort, a linear search of an array, and for data validation. Other topics covered include converting numbers between numbering systems, binary arithmetic including two's complement subtraction, console and file input/output, and functions. Data Structure course description: This course is an introduction to the design and implementation of complex data structures used in large computer applications. List, stack, queue, and tree data structures are implemented using pointers and recursion. Topics include software requirements specification, algorithm analysis, debugging and testing, searching and sorting techniques, and object oriented programming methodology [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:49 AM PDT I feel like this comes as obvious to a lot of you but I'm 19 years old currently learning front-end web development and I feel like I'm almost ready to start applying for jobs. I've never made a move like this so I was wondering what I need to know before moving to a new city (if I get hired) or whether is feasible. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Is there a reason a website should require certain formatting on name/phone number form fields Posted: 27 Aug 2018 10:30 AM PDT I had to lookup some information on people using several government sites. Some of the form fields said things like "Enter last name then first name with only a space in between them, do not use a comma", others said put a comma between the names, others said use a period, some wanted phone numbers with hyphens, without hyphens, etc. Is there a reason some sites might require specific styling that I'm missing or is it bad programming design. I would think regex would make it so that it doesn't really matter how a name or phone number is entered. [link] [comments]

Helping programmers with focus problems as a manager Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:07 AM PDT I have a very small team and the biggest problem with our output is definitely losing focus through the day, from what I can see and self-diagnosis. Day projects turn into week projects with no end in sight sometimes. I've been reading about what I can do as a manager and the answers I've found don't seem entirely satisfying. We generally chit chat through the day about what we're working on or what's giving up trouble so an agile/scrum meeting wouldn't make sense I don't think. I've read that putting emphasis on taking a break can help with focus and I may try that but it's common enough for a discussion to happen through the day on some video game or other topic for 10 or 15 minutes and is then followed by some more redditing from what I can see so break-taking doesn't seem to be an issue. The only time I felt we had real focus as a team was when deadlines were looming but that's stressful and I don't want to try and force that feeling all the time. I also notice there's less news checking/redditing/facebook when the owner is in. I'm not 100% sure that translates to real work getting done or just looking busy but it's something. I was a peer on the same level as the rest of my team for a long time so I'm certain they don't see me as a 'boss' so I don't get the same reaction of switching off of time wasting and switching to work like the owner does. Plus I'm there all the time alongside them. Back to what can be done: I can pass along some articles to help with focus for them to read maybe, and I can put more emphasis on breaks. Hopefully they'll feel like a firm, set period of time, rather than taking them when you're not focused which can drag on for long periods of time? I feel like more can/should be done though. Any advice at all would be appreciated! [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:45 AM PDT Hey all, Currently on a little project involving gathering some numerical data from some sensors via an Arduino, and now need to transfer this data onto a Apache webserver being hosted on a Raspberry Pi (on my LAN). I'm having difficulty understanding how this would work. Do I need to POST the data from the Arduino to the webpage and then use GET? Or do I just have to use POST? My theory on HTTP is a little basic, so if you have any material which could help (or know how to!) then that would be great. [link] [comments]
Prospective Developer with questions about interviews Posted: 27 Aug 2018 03:18 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm new here so sorry if this is a lame post. Basically I am a 30something year old teacher who hates my job and wants to get into another career field before its too late for me to do so. I've been taking a ton of HTML, CSS, and JAVA courses online and through a connection have potentially landed an interview as a web producer at a pretty big company. Despite not having a ton of experience the hiring manager seemed optimistic saying that it wasn't really a position that needed a ton of experience other than knowing how to handle wordpress and html stuff. Anyways, I'm SUPER nervous, mainly because I know nothing about this world, and I'm really scared that vocabulary might be used in the interview I'm unfamiliar with and will look like a major goof. Basically, I'm wondering, can any of you share some of your interview experiences? I have no idea what will happen, what they might ask me to do, etc... and I think it would make me feel better if I had some idea of what to expect going in. TL;DR beginner web developer who potentially has an interview. share some of your interview experiences so I can have some idea about what to expect. THANKS! [link] [comments]

ELI5: What are Polyfills and Shims, and what are their differences? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 06:37 AM PDT I have a basic idea of what these two things are used for; they are used for enabling older browsers to support newer features. All polyfills/shims I've ever used were provided with a template (example: using a CLI scaffolding tool) How exactly do they work? Why are there polyfills AND shims? Thank you. [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Aug 2018 01:35 PM PDT Hey there! I'm currently a Junior Web Developer who is working for a contracting company. I've been on the same assignment (contract-to-hire) for over a year now, and my manager is hoping to flip me to a fulltime Mid-Level Web Developer within the next few months. I currently make $33 an hour (roughly $68k a year) in Cleveland, OH. In your opinion/experience, what would be a fair pay increase for my particular situation? Do you have any advice for me when the time comes to negotiate? Thanks :) [link] [comments]
Looking for some excellent resume examples Posted: 26 Aug 2018 06:10 PM PDT I am moving from a career as a teacher (12 years) into web development. I have a resume, but thought it might be nice to see some resumes from people who have successfully landed jobs. Is there a bank of resumes out there that I can look over? I'm not looking to steal, as I have a resume now, but I'd like to see and compare mine to what you all have come up with. Alternatively, are there any good sites anyone has come across that helped when developing a resume? [link] [comments]
Self Hosted Cloud IDE (similar to Cloud 9)? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 09:11 AM PDT I really liked using cloud 9 IDE. However now that Amazon has acquired them, I will need to pay for an AWS account to use that service. I was wondering what self hosting options are available for a cloud IDE? I like the idea of building my house on my own land. As for features, I am looking for a web based IDE similar to Atom in terms of layout and functionality. However, I also would need the ability to spin up "containers" or linux instances with root access to be able to run web applications and the like. Any recommendations? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 12:46 PM PDT I've been working about 3 years for an agency were we mainly do "brochures sites" using WordPress and Divi, so lots of drag and drop, CSS when needed and rarely some JS. For this, I'm super rusty with PHP and my goal is to practice and regain confidence writing PHP for WordPress (custom themes, custom plugins, etc). Which online courses do you guys recommend for this? I searched Udemy.com and there are tons and I'm not sure which one to pick, the Lynda.com are too basic and youtube has also gazillion options. Any tips would be appreciated. [link] [comments]

What is your Web Development process? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 10:52 AM PDT I've been watching a lot of design videos lately (because I love both design and development) and was reminded of a video I watched in the past about how graphic designers in the industry has a design process they go through. Which got me thinking, what is your Web Development process? [link] [comments] |
