    Whats a good offer?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 03:20 PM PDT

    I've always been more of a back end guy, its not that I dont like front end, its that Im only so so at it. Im about to start on project that is meant for building a protfolio and learning more about Django. I'd like to hire some one to put togeather a few basic templates for this project that I can adapt and populate. However, I don't want to end up on r/choosingbeggers. So whats the going rate for maybe... 5 diffrent types of pages? Idk if it matters, but Id like the templates to use bootstrap.

    [CRITIQUE] Please help me with my Resume

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 08:50 AM PDT

    A little background: I live in Houston, Tx. I graduated from college this past December with a degree in computer science and I've been working as a freelance web developer for the past two years. During this time I've been learning mainly front-end technologies, I really like this stuff. I'm currently working on my second react application, this one is a lot bigger than the first one and it has data persistence, so probably this would help my resume a lot.

    It has been hard to find that first web dev job. I've had several interviews, mainly by phone. I definitely feel that my skills should be enough to get me a junior web dev position but, maybe I'm not selling them well enough. Please help me improve my resume if possible, I don't know if it is safe to link my github and my portfolio here, but I definitely could do it if that may be of any help.

    I'm Trying my best to find that first job in Houston if possible. Thank you !!

    [Showoff Saturday] Placedog.net | Free Image Placeholder Service For Dog Lovers

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 01:17 PM PDT

    A little side project I created out of boredom, and some inspiration from placekitten.com.

    Creates placeholder images of our canine companions, with a width and height limit of 1000px each way.

    Images are cached after creation for faster loading.

    There are a couple of filters included (greyscale and pixelation) because, why not?

    My mind is constantly looking for distractions when learning. Why??

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 04:50 AM PDT

    Hey all,

    Im in the process of learning react with redux at the moment following Stephen Griders course on udemy.
    It is a great course but i can never sit down for very long before my mind starts looking for ways to pull me away from the screen with out me really realising how little of the course im getting through on a daily basis.

    Is this quite common and do you have any kind of tips or techniques as to how i can sit down for long periods of time to code and absorb all this new information?

    Ive tried pomodoro timers, meditation(i do this on a daily basis), new sleeping patterns, coffee and a lot more and its driving me insane because i love what ive learned so far and what react can do, I just need to be able to sit and focus.

    How can i get powerful focus?

    All suggestions are well appreciated!

    Would you work for a web company whose own website looks incomplete?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 03:26 PM PDT

    Not too long ago I was in the interview process for a small-ish web agency that builds web software for other companies. They're not all small clients, but some are rather of a good size and history, mainly tending to the medical industry.

    After one phone interview I went back to check out their website, and there's not much explanation on what they do, no list of staff (not even the founder/top management), nor do they have a portfolio section to show any client samples or case studies.

    This isn't some very new company. I talk to the founder himself and he said he built the company almost 10 years ago. But their staff is very small and so is their list of clients. Hopefully these clients are very loyal because it seems like an easy way to sink the company if they bail out.

    But I'm still concerned a bit that they might be holding something back from me. Like there is some lack of transparency on their part and the website isn't helping. Have you faced a company like this? What have you done?

    I know how to use HTML and CSS fairly well but most my projects suck. I know why they look bad but I don't know what I should change in order to make them look clean. Do you know any course (paid or free) that teaches you about the artistic aspect of making a website?

    Quick posting to a website

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 02:08 PM PDT

    I am involved with the design of a website for a non-profit organization with member meetings and activities. We will be listing such activities on the website.

    One problem that all such organizations have is sudden cancellations due to weather and other problems. I would like to have a way for certain people, such as the program committee or officers to quickly post a notice of a cancellation or other change (time, location, etc.) to the website. This would, of course, have to be password protected and easy to use, for example, by sending an email to a site containing the password and message.

    Can any web builder service (weebly, Wordpress, etc.) offer this feature? Is there a way to do this in HTML? Are there any other tools or plugins that do this? Any suggestions?

    Is Javascript always going to be in a state of change?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 01:57 PM PDT

    I guess it is the Latin of the Web, which means it'll need to stay up to date as well? I started learning Python and JS about 6 months ago and while Python came easily, I had a serious time just disentangling the old ways vs new ways (constructors vs classes etc). Seems this will be both a benefit and concern in the years to come.

    Why are production code variables so uniformative?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 07:12 AM PDT

    I was using the inbuilt timer feature on DuckDuckGo (Similar to Google Chrome). I was interested to see how the js worked, I brought up the Dev Tools and tried to sieve through the scripts. I naively expected to find a function; "Timer".

    Most of the code I saw looked like this:

    function y(d) { var c = C[d[E]]; return c || (c = { }, D++, d[E] = D, C[D] = c), c } function x(b, h, f) { h || (h = at); if (B) { return h.createElement(b)

    Why are these variables so uninformative? I thought good coding practices recommended explanatory variables. My only thought was that they did not want the code to be replicated however that doesn't make sense under the assumption that DuckDuckGo is purely Open Source.

    Sorry about the code formatting, I'm a reddit n00b

    Hired a Developer who seems to lack the basics.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 01:00 PM PDT

    My company hired a Developer recently. Shortly after they started, we noticed their hard / soft skills leave much to be desired. We believed we can teach anyone who is willing to listen, learn, ask question's when they get stuck. This particular person doesn't seem to have "It", but I believe in giving anyone with the right attitude a chance. In the past several weeks I have noticed they lack basic skills in -

    • Time management

    • Handling Failure

    • Doing grunt work

    • Taking notes and following their own task lists (boiling down convoluted requests to achievable tasks )

    We want to level this person up so they can build their own things and be an asset, but we are worried that if they can't handle these basic tasks, how will they fare at larger projects where a lot of money / time is on the line. Also, when we try to work with their shortcomings, we seem to see a lot of attitude. As if it's our fault they told us they can do a number of things, but can't.

    I know it's a business, not a family. But this person has the right attitude and is just very nice person. I remember how tough that time is for a new junior at a new gig where things tend to get tense quick.

    My question is -

    How can we train this person despite their lack of hard / soft skills and when does the point come where you cut the cord and bring in someone who is a fast learner with a better ability to focus?

    We have a pretty tight track, where we have trained many Juniors successfully in the past. So feeling a little stuck on this, but trying to keep and open mind.

    How to add Google ReCaptcha Properly

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 12:42 PM PDT

    I have a PHP contact form that performs validation via AJAX/JSON on the server side and pushes errors to Javascript to print out the errors and alter the HTML/CSS accordingly.

    How can I properly implement Google ReCaptcha with AJAX validation?

    Here is my code attempt.

    ReCaptcha Snippet:

     //reCAPTCHA validation if (isset($_POST['g-recaptcha-response'])) { require('component/recaptcha/src/autoload.php'); $recaptcha = new \ReCaptcha\ReCaptcha(SECRET_KEY, new \ReCaptcha\RequestMethod\SocketPost()); $resp = $recaptcha->verify($_POST['g-recaptcha-response'], $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']); if (!$resp->isSuccess()) { $errors = json_encode(array('type'=>'error', 'text' => 'Captcha is Required!')); die($output); } }

    PHP:

    <?php $errors = array(); // array to hold validation errors $data = array(); // array to pass back data // validate the variables ====================================================== // if any of these variables don't exist, add an error to our $errors array if (empty($_POST['firstName'])) $errors['firstName'] = 'First Name is required.'; if (empty($_POST['lastName'])) $errors['lastName'] = 'Last Name is required.'; if (empty($_POST['companyName'])) $errors['companyName'] = 'Company Name is required.'; if (empty($_POST['companyAddress'])) $errors['companyAddress'] = 'Company Address is required.'; if (empty($_POST['city'])) $errors['city'] = 'City is required.'; if (empty($_POST['state'])) $errors['state'] = 'State is required.'; if (empty($_POST['emailAddress'])) $errors['emailAddress'] = 'Email Address is required.'; if (empty($_POST['comment'])) $errors['comment'] = 'Comment is required.'; //reCAPTCHA validation if (isset($_POST['g-recaptcha-response'])) { require('component/recaptcha/src/autoload.php'); $recaptcha = new \ReCaptcha\ReCaptcha(SECRET_KEY, new \ReCaptcha\RequestMethod\SocketPost()); $resp = $recaptcha->verify($_POST['g-recaptcha-response'], $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']); if (!$resp->isSuccess()) { $errors = json_encode(array('type'=>'error', 'text' => 'Captcha is Required!')); die($output); } } // return a response =========================================================== // if there are any errors in our errors array, return a success boolean of false if ( ! empty($errors)) { // if there are items in our errors array, return those errors $data['success'] = false; $data['errors'] = $errors; } else { // if there are no errors process our form, then return a message // DO ALL YOUR FORM PROCESSING HERE // THIS CAN BE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO (LOGIN, SAVE, UPDATE, WHATEVER) // show a message of success and provide a true success variable $data['success'] = true; $data['message'] = 'Success!'; } // return all our data to an AJAX call echo json_encode($data);

    Javascript:

    // Start $(document).ready(function() { // process the form $('form').submit(function(event) { $('.form-group').removeClass('has-error'); // remove the error class $('.help-block').remove(); // remove the error text // get the form data // there are many ways to get this data using jQuery (you can use the class or id also) var formData = { 'firstName' : $('input[name=firstName]').val(), 'lastName' : $('input[name=lastName]').val(), 'companyName' : $('input[name=companyName]').val(), 'companyAddress' : $('input[name=companyAddress]').val(), 'city' : $('input[name=city]').val(), 'state' : $('input[name=state]').val(), 'emailAddress' : $('input[name=emailAddress]').val(), 'comment' : $('input[name=comment]').val() }; // process the form $.ajax({ type : 'POST', // define the type of HTTP verb we want to use (POST for our form) url : 'formMaster.php', // the url where we want to POST data : formData, // our data object dataType : 'json', // what type of data do we expect back from the server encode : true }) // using the done promise callback .done(function(data) { // log data to the console so we can see console.log(data); // here we will handle errors and validation messages if ( ! data.success) { // handle errors for name --------------- if (data.errors.firstName) { $('#firstName-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#firstName-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.firstName + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } // handle errors for name --------------- if (data.errors.lastName) { $('#lastName-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#lastName-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.lastName + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } // handle errors for name --------------- if (data.errors.companyName) { $('#companyName-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#companyName-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.companyName + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } // handle errors for Company Address --------------- if (data.errors.companyAddress) { $('#companyAddress-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#companyAddress-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.companyAddress + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } // handle errors for Company Address --------------- if (data.errors.city) { $('#city-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#city-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.city + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } // handle errors for Company Address --------------- if (data.errors.state) { $('#state-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#state-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.state + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } // handle errors for Email Address --------------- if (data.errors.emailAddress) { $('#emailAddress-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#emailAddress-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.emailAddress + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } // handle errors for superhero alias --------------- if (data.errors.comment) { $('#comment-group').addClass('has-error'); // add the error class to show red input $('#comment-group').append('<div class="help-block">' + data.errors.comment + '</div>'); // add the actual error message under our input } } else { // ALL GOOD! just show the success message! $('form').append('<div class="alert alert-success">' + data.message + '</div>'); // usually after form submission, you'll want to redirect // window.location = '/thank-you'; // redirect a user to another page } }) // using the fail promise callback .fail(function(data) { // show any errors // best to remove for production console.log(data); }); // stop the form from submitting the normal way and refreshing the page event.preventDefault(); }); });

    Right now I am just honestly confused on how to get this to work properly. Does the validation answer is obtained by Javascript or PHP or does Javascript pass it on to PHP? If there is an error how can I pass it to Javascript to print the error?

    Dynamically updating Html data attributes React

    Posted: 16 Jun 2018 11:56 AM PDT

    Hi guys, I want to update a html attribute which I am getting from a input form. This is the code below

     render() { let dataValue = this.props["data-value"]; dataValue = this.props.reading; return <div className="ldBar" data-value={dataValue} data-preset="fan" />; }

    I want to show a different loading bar every time user enters a number in input form. I have linked {dataValue} to props of user input. I just don't know how to use it to update the loading bar.

    edit: I am using a JS library for loading bar here LoadingBar. Thank you

    Best way to make a site that i will need to add pages to?

    I need a site where I'll be adding a new page every day, and also adding a link to it on the main page.

    Is there a better way other than just manually making a html file and linking to it?
