I have started my own Web dev company. I need advice.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 07:31 AM PDT

I am currently doing a bit of freelance work for another company but that is going to dry up as they have taken on a new Web dev and he is going to be handling any jobs I would have got. I need some advice on how to grow my business. I have a website for my business at the moment. It is a bit plain and doesn't stand out so I am in the process of re designing it along with a new logo and maybe even a new company name. At the moment my company name is just "my name Web design".

Should I stick with that name or try to create something a bit more memorable? In terms of advertising I have been doing so in local newspapers and on Facebook. The only real business I have been getting is from friends. Im not sure why I'm not getting more work and would really like some advice on how to grow my customer base. Thanks.

Edit: thanks for all your replies so far. I forgot to mention that I currently have a full time job as well seperate from Web design, to keep my bills paid!

    Position Title Question

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 12:33 PM PDT

Just got an offer for a new position. The title is just "Web Developer" but the responsibilities are a lot more. Hoping to send back something to get the title changed but not quite sure what it should be. Hoping you guys can help.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Developing Websites (obviously)

    • Maintaining and Updating client websites

    • Organize and maintain client hosting accounts

    • Managing Freelancers

    • Meeting with clients to discuss their technical needs

I'd be the only in house developer they have. My primary responsibility would be developing, maintaining, and updating sites for clients. But I'd also be overseeing freelancers and doing meetings with clients.

I was thinking asking for a lead title since I'm managing freelancers, or a senior title maybe? Not really sure, feel like just web developer is underselling it.

    Thoughts?

Can I offer Web Dev services knowing only HTML, CSS, and JavaScript?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 11:33 AM PDT

First, a little about me. I'm a freelance web designer and I've been learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for some time now. I've been looking into transitioning into web development so that I can offer my Web Design clients. My question is, are the above mentioned enough to actually find work? I know I obviously won't be able to make ecommerce or more complicated sites without a backend language. Most of my clients are small business owners like restaurants or service businesses, etc. Should I eventually start offering web development services or should I learn a backend language first?

I eventually want to learn PHP and possibly work towards Wordpress Development. Is PHP a difficult language to learn?

Any insight on experienced devs is greatly appreciated!!

Thoughts. Where do you redirect after CRUD actions?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 10:54 AM PDT

I'm wanting to pick some brains.

Where should a user be redirected to after they:

    • Create/Add a new entry (Index or Edit Page?)
    • Update an entry (Index or Edit Page?)
    • Delete an entry.

The last is obviously (?) an Index, but where do you send a user after the other two?

What math should I know for HTML5 canvas animation?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 02:37 PM PDT

I recently started learning canvas for a college class and realized I forgot a lot of the math I might need to draw/animate well. So my question before I go and study some math is, what exactly should I know? I don't want to go over things I won't need.

Want to start learning Web Dev, looking for an affordable course between 3-12 months

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 02:11 PM PDT

I'm 20 and have not really started anything career wise yet, been jobbing here and there an travelling. I decided last week to start seriously pursuing web development, because I've always been good with tech and problem-solving and it offers the possibility of independant, remote working and being a digital nomad which is my vision for my life. I was planning on self learning it all and building up a resume while jobbing with first small gigs on stuff like fiverr and going from there, moving to Canada and buying a minivan to live in. This dream has been terribly, terribly received by my parents to say the least who offer 0 support in this endeavour and are dying to have me at university. But as 3 years in a university is too long an investment for me, I thought a decent compromise could be doing a course, part-time or full-time for half a year or a year or so, to have some time to properly learn all this stuff and gain some experience before heading off into the world, and keeping my parents somewhat happy. Something like this:

https://www.ncirl.ie/Courses/Course-Details/course/Certificate-in-Web-Design-CWD I might take this but not I'm not too keen on Ireland. Just looking for other options.

Does anyone know of such courses? Under 10k too, but can be global.

    Cheers,

tldr: big believer in self learning and resume building, but seeking an institutional and shortish course/program for pragmatic reasons

    Advice for Hackerrank Front-end Assessment, X-Post r/cscareerquestions

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 02:09 PM PDT

Applying for a position as a web developer at a web development / software development company.

They gave me two Hackerrank assessments to do:

    (1) Company's Front-end Development Assessment, and

    (2) Company's [Software] Development Assessment

I don't know if the questions will be company-specific, but in case they aren't, does anyone know what I should study to prepare for the front-end assessment?

Asking for anyone who's completed a similar (or similarly titled) Hackerrank assessment.

Help With How to Handle a Site I am Doing For Free.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 10:05 AM PDT

I committed to doing a website for Free that is for a BBQ festival in my hometown. I thought it would be nice to give something to the community. When I first was asked to do this task they stated that it would just be a simple website that was mainly just information based. After talking to them more in depth about the website it seems they want it to be more advanced than just a basic website. It will be very time consuming to complete this project. I still am willing to do it for them for free, but I was trying to think if there was some way do get something out if this project that isn't a monetary gain. I was thinking maybe like promotion or something at the event or to be considered a sponsor for the event. Just something to get my name out there as a freelancer to possibly be able to pick up new work.

Would love to see if anyone has an suggestions on what I should do in this situation?

Continuous Development: How Iterative Processes Can Improve Your Code

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 08:32 AM PDT

What sort of functionalities need to be built for a website like this?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 11:51 AM PDT

a friend and I have a business/website idea, and it sort of inspired me to start on a career path to learn how to code websites as well. While I'm very new not ready to build it yet, I can at least visualize and mentally conceive what the front end will look like and how it will be done. But some of the features on the site seem to be very robust and probably involved complex back end languages. We're considering hiring/working with someone for this, but I would love to be able to at least understand the process and know what languages/ apps / etc... would be used for this stuff because I definitely want to be able to at least maintain the website on my own.

Here's a list of the functionalities that will be needed.

    - A deep "tag" based linking system. The website is music related, so things will need to be able to be tagged by genre, by city, by band, by show, basically everything needs a tag, so it can be searched and also automatically populate the other necessary and related pages of the website.

    - a streaming music player

    - related to the first point, there needs to be some sort of "app" that acts as a calendar. First, you pick a date, then filter (by tags) by genre, city, venue, promoter, etc...bands from those cities also need to show up (they will choose city tags when they sign up)

    - "mini social network" functions. Every user on the site will be able to sign up for a profile type. (band, label, promoter, blogger to start) We need to be able to track the contributions each users makes to the site (tag based again most likely) and display this on the profile, or at least display some kind of "how active are ou thing. also track their activity by new music uploaded, new shows posts (again ideally this is tag based) basically we need lots of stuff to be automatic. same with our "news" section....bloggers who create content will have it automatically posted to that main page and will also be tagged in their profile.

    - a separate forum. this is pretty simple at least logically. I've read building a forum from scratch is a great way to learn backend and front end together.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Back-end web dev course

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 11:32 AM PDT

I'm looking for a course with a focus on back-end web development! So far I've been working through the Web Developer Bootcamp, but it's outdated and I couldn't set up things like C9 (which requires credit card details now), MEAN stack and it was all just way too different now.

I'd prefer a PHP course, but it's not a necessity by any means.

Thanks in advance for any relevant comments or suggestions!

Apache on Android cant bind to port

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 11:19 AM PDT

I've tried setting the port to any number of non privileged high ports to no avail. I start the server and it complains with error 98 that it can't bind to the port and quits saying no listening sockets. I found numerous others with the same problem and no clear answer in my case as theirs was in linux with a command shell available. I killed the process and restarted but same issue. Please help.

Looking for an Off the Shelf Solution to Match Included Example

    Posted: 08 Jun 2018 10:23 AM PDT

I am trying to see if there is an off the shelf solution that is integrated with an e-commerce solution that allows product customization similar to what this site does:

Is there anything out there that would accomplish it? I am trying to help my sister set up a website but this is a bit out of my wheelhouse.
