Should i take job offer as Software Dev from large corporation, after 7 months into my first UI Dev job?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 10:14 AM PDT

So when I first started interviewing, I interviewed for both places. I got a job offer from one company (700+ ppl) as a UI Dev. I got rejected from the enterprise corp, but the recruiter liked me, and told me if a more entry position opened up, she'd give me a call.

So I recently got a call from the recruiter, and even though I really liked where I was working, I thought what the heck, and interviewed, and I got a job offer.

Idk what to do. I really like where I"m working. People are nice, job is stimulating--I got to spearhead a project for a core functionality for our product--and my manager hinted I'm up for a promotion in the next bi-annual review. And it's a software company, so our main product is what I'm working on.

The multinational though is not a software company, its main product, however, is shifting towards becoming mainly digital. Its main advantages are the compensation--a good step up from what i'd get paid, even if I were to get promoted--the job title, I'd be a Software Dev, not a UI Dev, and its prestige--the company's name would look really good on my resume.

What's most important to me is Work-Life Balance, Company Culture, and Compensation. Current company is perfect except for the last one -- I'm somewhat worried if in a corporation, I'd just be a replaceable cog in a gigantic machine.

Was anyone in a similar situation? I've never worked for a corporation before, so I have no idea what it's like.

I built this timer to add to my presentation website using HTML, CSS, JS, using my own algorithm. It may be messy, but I have never done this before and am absurdly proud of it.

Reseller hosting for hosting clients to make a side income?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 07:12 AM PDT

Hello, I've started building a few websites for people, just simple wordpress sites really for local businesses. One of the main difficulties is explaining how to buy hosting and allowing me access, either to begin building or transferring files. So I think reseller hosting will solve this problem, allowing me to build straight into the environment, no difficulties to the buyer and I can also make a percentage with maintenance. Is this advisable? I feel naive, so will like some advice on why or why I should not do this. Any recommendation on who I should go with? Preferably with UK data centres.

    Thank you

How to learn Containerization (Like Docker)?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 04:21 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

I've been grappling with learning containers for a while. I am a self-taught dev, without CS background.

Containers touch on a lot of topics: linux, kernel, virtualization, etc. So it's tricky to learn it without a solid grasp of the above.

Do I learn Linux first? Do I need to learn how an operating system works? It feels like I need to learn about the deeper level computer 'architecture' in order to master the usage of containers.

    Grateful for your guidance.

What stack would you choose to build this project? Need your opinions!

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 11:01 AM PDT

Problem You have 1 month to get a web app (requirements below) deployed. Where do you begin? What frameworks and resources do you use?

Requirements Authentication/ Users(sign up, log in, profiles, search, etc.)

Database access (CRUD, search, doesn't matter what database, could be SQL or NoSQL)

    Email messages between users

    Payment Gateway integration

Nice To Have Easy deployments (no complicated continuous integration or unit testing required...yet)

Angular front-end (or some other client side MVC framework)

Seed project available (so I don't have to integrate everything manually)

    What would you use?

    All opinions welcome!

I need advice on webhosting and finding an affordable domain service

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 02:15 PM PDT

    Hey r/webdev community!

I am planning on starting a website for my business (audio engineering) and I would like some advice on where I should look for buying a domain and website hosting.

I was planning on buying a domain name from godaddy.com, then I came across an online article showing alternatives besides using godaddy.com.

I am currently looking at fastcomet.com in regards to purchasing a domain, possibly in combination with their web hosting service.

I would greatly appreciate your tips/advice.

What languages should I learn in addition to HTML, CSS, and Javascript to create websites?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 04:08 PM PDT

I'm just starting to build my first website with HTML and CSS. I plan to start learning Javascript soon to help animate some elements and breathe life into my website, and I'm wondering what other languages are useful for creating websites?

I've heard there's great demand for C# and C++, but not sure if it's right for a budding UX developer.

What do you guys think about learning AngularDart along Flutter?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 04:07 PM PDT

I've been trying to find a good professional path for myself. I've got basic experience with PHP, Javascript, CSS and HTLM5 in general and am finishing a Computer Science Bacharel. I currently have a strong on the programming side and don't have much experience on front-end/User Interface.

I've want to get into WebApp and Mobile App development and also get better at UI/UX, getting experience that is probably going to be useful after I finish college. I've seen that Flutter is a good option for Mobile Apps and learning it is one of my priorities.

Right now I have WebApp project for college that is currently in the first stages and is planed to be written using CakePHP. This project is going to be maintained by future students, probably receiving any change or update only in 5-10 years from now. And those students might have little experience in programming in general, so the project is going to be used for them to learn it.

I was thinking about changing the project from CakePHP to AngularDart so that I can learn somethings that are going to be useful on my next project which is going to be a Mobile App using Flutter.

    The questions I have are:

    • Is learning AngularDart going to give me any useful experience when transitioning to Flutter?
    • Is it a good idea to use AngularDart for this project?
    • Having in mind that I might work alone with the Mobile App project, is Flutter a good starting ground?

Any feedback on the questions I have or on the things I said is appreciated. Thank you

    Advice about web development

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 02:04 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. I need advice about what gameplan I should follow.

I need to build a Progressive Web App that would include functions such as profiles, live streaming, videos, messaging, shopping, advertising (like Google Ads), etc. What I mean by gameplan is what type of developers do I need for a project like this and what questions should I ask potential hires? What skills would that person need to have to be able to accomplish this task if it is possible to be accomplished by one person? Where would you advise to find such a developer? I am 24 and all my programmer friends do not have enough experience. I have tried Upwork but their service was so bad that I do not want to go back there (the developer was great, Upwork's service was very bad).

I know that my question does not provide enough information to receive a comprehensive answer from you, but I would appreciate if you could help me out.

Need help! Chrome Extension I am developing is causing Google Maps and a few other sites to not load (info and link in post)

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 01:31 PM PDT

Hello /r/webdev I am developing a Chrome extension, Token Ticker. The extension is a floating cryptocurrency price tracker that displays on every webpage.

Basically, the extension consists of a content script that retrieves JSON information, communicates with chrome.storage, and injects the html (and corresponding styles) into the page on document.ready. To ensure the banner is not covering up any native site elements, the first thing the script does on document.ready is translate the entire body down the height of the banner, and then creates the floating banner element in the newly created space. This seems to work perfectly on every page, save a few.

When running on Google Maps, the entire map container element disappears as soon as the translate function is executed. I inspected the container, and it seems that the height goes to zero (supposed to be 100% clientHeight). Could this be an issue with async DOM manipulation? Any tips on the proper order of execution?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Please let me know if you need any more information. You should be able to access the content script from the dev console if you install the extension (as I am sure you all know). I apologize if this issue is simple or if I am not making any sense at all. I am still very new to web development.

Is it possible to create a webpage on top of an existing webpage. (Php based with user login)?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 12:58 PM PDT

    Hey webdevs,

    I have two noob questions:

Imagine a php based website (owned by someone else) where each user gets an account, where you can enter something in a form with like 20 textfields and submit it, and the page creates a pdf.

    1) Is it possible to create a website on top, where you have a much simpler form (reduced to only important textfields for a better user experience) and after the user presses submit, it also craetes the pdf on the foreign website?

    2) is there a special term for that/how do you call something like that?

Can someone help me understand how to set up a subdomain using GitHub pages and Cloudflare?

Hi everyone. I'm a pretty novice developer, trying to set up a portfolio site. I currently have my landing page setup and would like to build new pages for my projects. I successfully did so for one, but the address for it is project.mypage.com. I have no clue how to make it be mypage.com/project, which is what I want. Any help?

Help deciding on what to learn next and what to build to show case my skills

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 12:29 PM PDT

Hello! I'm currently learning web dev on the side and it's been going well. These past few months I have barely touched webdev due to school so I'm kind of "out of the loop". So far I'm able to create full stack applications using the MEN stack (MongoDB, Express, Node). My biggest project I have done is that I created a fake social network (think of a twitter/facebook hybrid) from scratch with CRUD functionalities where you can upload profile pictures and update your own info, follow people, post updates where only your followers can view them, etc.

My semester is almost over so I'd like to start learning some more stuff. I know the generic stack is MEAN but should I learn Angular/Vue/React/Or something else that has come out which I'm unaware of.

I also learned a bit of PHP and MySQL but that was very minimal.

Also I'm soon going to be applying for different placements within the year so I'm wondering what other type of projects I should build to showcase my skills.

    Thanks everyone!

A side question I have is that I see people say they use C# or Java as well. How does this work? I thought websites can only be created using PHP, Node, or Python using Django.

[Advice] Temporal Site for Showing Products

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 11:29 AM PDT

I'm doing a web page for my business but until is done i want to have something, i still haven't paid any domain so i wanted to use a free online gallery, like imgur, but more advanced, so i can show my products to clients. Problems with imgur:

    • there is a sidebar that takes 40% of width

    • Very basic, no hyperlinks, no sections.

I was looking for an "advanced imgur" :P. I know css, php, html and js, so i can make it myself but i want a friendly url, not something like www.mysite.someweridhost.ll.u.com, that's why i was using imgur.

[Showoff Saturday] My new portfolio site

    Posted: 07 Apr 2018 10:52 PM PDT

Looking for some feedback/suggestions on the newest version of my portfolio site.

It doesn't use any JS or CSS framework, but is built in ES7, Pug and Sass then minified and packaged by Webpack.

Specifically looking for feedback and suggestions on

    • JS performance improvements
    • Scrolling functionality
    • Projects page
    • Overall layout
    • Mobile responsiveness

Please don't try it on Safari, unless you know why CSS animations are screwy and can tell me how to fix it :)

Typescript users... how do you document your code?

I came across TypeDoc recently and, while it seems like a great idea, it doesn't have a lot of attention.

Do you feel like well structured code and a few comments here and there an effective approach, or do you use something more?

How much of your work is "stupid" and shouldn't be done by you?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2018 07:18 AM PDT

My reasons for asking, is that I am looking for pain-points in the development cycle, which I define as "work that programmers shouldn't have to be bothered with". My reasons for looking for these, is because I have this thing which I have created, where my main goal is to increase productivity for web developers, by automating the tasks that developers shouldn't really have to spend time on.

Below is one example of such "apps developers should never have to create". (CRUD)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrORikxPDhE

However, I need more of these "pain points", and since I want to solve the itches web developers have, I'd love use-cases and examples in this area ...
