At what stage of my CS degree should I try find an internship?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 05:58 PM PDT

I've just finished my first year and received good grades. I would love to find a job that's somewhat involved with programming but I'm almost 100% sure that what I've learnt in first year will not be enough to even apply for an internship.

I'd hate to waste time doing an ordinary job that is in no way linked to the job I'm aiming for once I've left university.

Internship.. what to do if skills lack?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:34 PM PDT

Like the title states, my biggest fear is going into a company not knowing what I am doing and not being able to program correctly..

Can I be kicked or fired for not coding correctly?

In all realities am I too late to go into programming?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 04:33 AM PDT

I am 36, husband and father and need to take home at least $2,000 a month to maintain our standard of living. My current work will pay for further education, I already have a BS. I feel I missed out on not going further in that direction when I was in school. I am thinking of going back to school and starting over as it were.

Besides the "if you dream it you can achieve it" mentality did I miss the boat? Will companies hire a late 30s newbie?

My current career road is very unsatisfactory and I fear this direction being the next 30 years l.

Friend wants me to join his start-up.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:33 PM PDT

Soon to be computer science grad here. A friend of mine wants me to come onboard and work for him at a cyber security start-up he recently founded. Currently have no other job offers so I thought I look into it. The pay is going to be shit for a bit (around 3000 a month) but he is offering shares in the company. Besides my friend (CEO) and the CTO I would be the only other employee. The company already has a product they are selling and the CTO was personally going to train me in the product and cyber security. At first I was leaning heavily towards taking the position. I am well aware of how terrible the pay is right now compared to what I could be making at a normal company. But I feel like this is the best time in my life (right after graduation) to take risks, I can always get another job. However people have been advising me not to go into business with a friend and that the risk of a start-up is not worth it.

So would joining this start-up be a good call or should I just try and find another job?

Which top companies give SWEs high-impact work?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:58 PM PDT

Feeling a bit like a cog in the wheel @ my current company. I'm on an infrastructure team and I really don't feel the impact of the work. Do you think this is due to the nature of such back-end heavy work? Are there companies out there that are both reputable and still have work that makes one ~feels good~?

Does anyone think the coding assessment for SpaceX is fair?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 01:12 PM PDT

I'm talking about the initial quiz they send out with ten multiple choice C++ debugging questions. I thought the examples were ambiguous and poorly defined. Most had syntactical errors, which wasn't a choice, and others had multiple errors. Additionally, I'd argue that not handling invalid inputs isn't necessarily a bug, but they didn't make that clear.

Has anyone else taken this assessment and thought it was totally fair? If so, I'll just take that as a sign I just need to brush up on C/C++ more.

Questions about a future career choice.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:01 PM PDT

I'm on mobile so I'll try to keep this from becoming a mess.

I'm a sophomore in highschool and interested in programming.

1)Is this a good career path? I feel like jobs will be hard to find once I get out of college.

2)What language would be best to start with. I know it's not necessarily a language but I think HTML would help me get my feet wet.

3)I don't think I would have to worry about expanding/creating a portfolio at my age but if I were what type of stuff would I do it with.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer some or all of these questions.

Manager threatened to let me go after I confronted him about my meager workload

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 07:42 AM PDT

So I'm only a few months into this position and after continually asking my manager for more work (and being ignored) I told him flat out that I'm not given 40 hours worth of work in a week.

His response? "Well we pay you a good salary. If we don't have the work for devs to do we'll just have to let some of them go."

This is ridiculous, as this same manager is often complaining about how over worked he is, and I see my coworkers busy all day. I feel like this is an issue with delegating work rather than overall workload.

I honestly want to help him and my other coworkers, but it seems like everybody is too busy to even teach the new guy how to help them with anything.

Is this something you've encountered before? Any advice? I'm ready to leave.

How do you accurately assess two job offers side by side with different costs of living?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 07:39 PM PDT

I'm currently a Software Engineer with about 2 years experience and recently decided I wanted to get into Product Management. I currently live in a pretty affordable area. With that being said, I'm considering relocating to the Bay Area for a variety of reasons for a Product Management role.

Given two offers with different titles and CoL, how do you most accurately assess and compare the two? I've started a spreadsheet but I don't know all the numbers just yet. I've also tried to include some things which you ultimately can't boil down to just a "Yes" or "No".

Here's the spreadsheet. My current role is on the left, new role on the right. Again, I understand you can't boil CoL down to yes or no but this is a rough idea.

If someone asks what field you work in, do you say IT?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:18 AM PDT

I don't consider CS work to be in the same category as IT work but if you had to explain to someone who wouldn't really understand the distinction anyway, what field would you say that you're in?

Has anyone here worked a part-time job in addition to interning through the summer?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:23 PM PDT

I'm interning at a company that doesn't offer relocation, housing, or pretty much anything else besides a check. Since it's in a HCOL area, a lot of my money will go to housing and flights. Any thoughts on working a part time job to help weaken the blow?

No SWE internship offers but managed to land one as a QA Engineer intern. Is it still better than some complex side projects?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 10:10 AM PDT

    Hello again /r/cscq,

I couldn't manage to land an offer on any SWE internship for this coming summer. As the title says, I received an offer as a QA Engineer Intern.

Not to bash on anyone, but I did testing as a part of a class assignment at my university, and I would say that I'm not too happy doing it. With all that said, if this intern position is still better than side projects, then I would absolutely take it. It's just that I don't want to be rejected when applying for SWE positions.

I did my bit of Google Search and found previous posts saying that I shouldn't put anything QA related if I want to avoid doing testing for the rest of my career, as switching out from QA to dev is very hard (but not impossible).

Also, I don't know if this makes a difference, but I will also be doing an accelerated MS program as I mentioned in a previous post. I've decided that I'm doing the Data Informatics MS program.

I have no previous internships and I will be graduating with my BS in Computer Science May 2019. I will finish the MS December 2019.

Given my current conditions, should I still accept this offer? If I'm applying for a Data related field, will a QA affect my career path as much as it would if I was applying for a SWE?

What does a career of a junior BACK END in web development look like?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:34 AM PDT

What does a career of a junior BACK END in web development look like? In PHP and using Laravel.

I did 2 internships but that was mainly front end tasks. I wonder what a beginning junior back ender haves to do?

Back end works seems to be harder then front end work. So what tasks/projects can i expect as a junior back ender since most things are complicated and have to do with money etc. which are being handled by senior back enders?

How to prepare for technical questions?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 07:28 PM PDT

I'm comfortable with language specific/alg/ds/leetcode problems, but in a lot of interviews I've had questions that are kind of like trick/brain teaser/"problem solving" questions that I really struggle with. Some of them involved concepts i never even knew existed/would never know since they aren't on any interview preparation site (and google doesn't even explain them well) I've been to and also are unrelated to my experiences/resume. How am I supposed to prepare and improve upon these types of questions? (or should i just give up on interviews where they pop up) thanks

What project have you done that you are most proud of as a programmer?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:24 PM PDT

Like anything that's not for work...maybe for your Church, for your family, for an organization (I guess that could involve work?) I don't know.

I'm looking to see what good and positive things programming can bring to somebody's life besides just making money.

Does randomly withdrawing your application in the middle of the hiring process ruin your chances for that company in the future?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:51 PM PDT

I have recently started to apply for jobs, and have gotten a higher response rate than I had expected. All these recruiters are emailing me to set up times to talk. If I continue the process with these companies, and get one offer I really like, I would have to withdraw my application from the rest of the companies. However, these are some companies I would like to work for possibly in the future. Does withdrawing in the middle of the hiring process put me in some sort of blacklist for the future?

Company Personal Scripting Language hurting my growth?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 10:40 AM PDT

    Hello!

I've been working at a consulting company for a little over a year now, and they use their own proprietary scripting language (derived from Perl and JS) with a lot of SQL involved.

The coding aspect of the job is relatively light compared to the SQL/DB side of things, since their language is relatively straightforward and specialized for what they need.

My question is: is this going to hurt my future career options? For instance, if I wanted to be a Java Developer or C++, C#, .NET, Web, etc?

I'm quite worried that I won't have experience to talk about using those languages or frameworks. However the work I'm doing involves a lot of software engineering principles, think: requirements, risk, implementation, etc

Any insight is appreciated! Thank you so very much.

Startup offering paid internship - red flag?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 02:22 PM PDT

I'm being offered a paid internship for a life sciences startup as a Unity3D VR/AR developer. It'll be paid full time when I graduate but there's some stuff about it that concerns me. Until I graduate, next month, it will be unpaid as a 'testing' period to see what I can do with their product. They have two projects running currently for two different clients and I've seen the current versions of these projects which are at an early state. When I do graduate, I'll be given a pay bracket of 10-15 USD hourly depending on how the testing period goes. They want me to focus on learning and being in a support role because, over time, they want to downsize their over seas team in India and focus purely on the local team that they're building now. After the first two interviews (I've had 3) I was told that the testing period would be 1 week, but now it's until I graduate in 4, maybe 1 week less depending on how I do. Also after the second interview I asked if I could have 2 weeks to think it over and consider my other opportunities which weren't as far along in the interview process. At the time the CEO said this was fine, but after my most recent interview he told me that he had written me off and didn't think I'd come back. And didn't really want to keep considering someone who wasn't considering them as their "#1 choice". Should I back out? Are unpaid probationary periods of 3-5 weeks normal? While I don't have a lot of experience in VR, should I still be trying to command a higher price due to my degree? There was no talk of benefits, though I failed to ask.

    Bootcamps in 2018

    Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:03 PM PDT

From what I understand, bootcamps were pretty popular a few years back when there were shortages of programmers. How is it now with the CS hype? Are bootcamp grad's still finding jobs easily or has the entry level field become more competitive and difficult?
