After 3 months of internship hunting, my friend got me one in 5 days. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:46 AM PDT I hand my friend my resume on Monday. HR receives it by Tuesday. I get an email on Wednesday from the manager that lets me know I have an interview on Thursday. Friday, I get a call from HR congratulating me for the offer. I've seen many people posting about references in this subreddit, but I've never really thought it was this powerful. It's a bittersweet feeling, because on one hand you secured an internship, but on the other hand you know that there are people who are much better than you who applied for the same thing, but didn't get because they simply didn't have the connection. Did you have a similar story? TL;DR references are much more powerful than I thought they would be. [link] [comments] |
Got screwed over by a recruiter at my first position, having trouble finding employment since. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:48 PM PDT Hey /r/cscareerquestions, Some background info about me before I start: I have a CS degree from Rutgers University, graduated in 2016. Last year, I finally got my first position outside of college, after months of searching! I was head over heels at the prospect of working on (what I thought was going to be) a professional, enterprise application, for the first time in my life (outside of internships). The position was described to me as an "Entry Level Developer Position" by the recruiting agency, and the interviews never really made it seem any different. Anyways, the money seemed good, and everything was looking hunky dory going into my first week at work. However, once I started working there I was absolutely NOT an "Entry Level Developer". This company had been falsely advertising the position as a development role, when in reality it was nothing more than a QA position. I was heartbroken. After years of spending countless nights studying, staying up late and nearly driving myself mad for a degree, I was stuck doing something that I hated, for 9 months (since that was the length of the contract, and I was told by many people that leaving your first job early is a bad career move). The skills I learned while working there were laughable, as anyone with half a functioning brain would be able to do the mundane QA and Regression work I was tasked with, week in and week out. I approached my managers often, expressing my distaste and asking for more difficult work, but to no avail--would you believe that in the 9 months I was there, I was not asked a single time to have a meeting with my management team about my experience so far? Every single meeting was called by me, and it usually revolved around me requesting some work that I could actually be proud of completing. Anyways, after 9 months the contract was up, and I was finally free of the burden that was this mundane position. I've been told time and time again, that with my degree I would have no shortage of job opportunities. However, I feel like with this position blighting my resume, recruiters online are either: 1) Passing on me for development roles, due to my forced QA position (financially, I needed that job. I couldn't make ends meet without it) 2) Only recommending QA positions for me, which I absolutely loathe. How the hell am I supposed to find an entry level development position? Has anyone been in a similar situation here before? I feel like I've unintentionally shot myself in the foot, and I'm breaking down a bit mentally since I've been unemployed and looking for a job for nearly 2 months and I'm running very low on money. In school I was primarily exposed to Java, C, and MSSQL/MYSQL, but I have some pet projects on my github account (such as a Twitch IRC bot, and some cryptocurrency stuff) that was written in python. One area which I think I'm personally lacking skills in (due to lack of exposure in a formal setting, I was late to the self-education thing with CS) is web development, and it seems like all anyone is looking for is a JS monkey who knows Angular, or a python developer with like 5+ years of experience with Flask or Django. Should I tell my boss I have social anxiety? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:29 PM PDT A big thing holding me back at my work is social anxiety. I don't participate a lot in meetings when I probably should. I don't want to look like I don't care when I really do. I'm worried people might think my communication is lacking, which it is, but I'm working on it. I'm wondering if it'd be worth talking about so my boss knows I'm really trying and it's hard, but I'm putting effort into trying to get over being judged or looking clueless during meetings and asking for help. Is this too personal to share with a coworker? I don't want to make him uncomfortable or make it seem like I'm looking for pity. [link] [comments] |
Senior Devs (15+ years experience), what advice would you give to yourself when you first started? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:13 AM PDT I'm wondering what others wish they could have heard back when they first started - assuming you would have taken your own advice. I'm looking for anything career or life related. [link] [comments] |
What is good etiquette for leaving my first job? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:37 AM PDT I'm leaving my first job, I've been here for a little over a year. What is a good procedure for my last few weeks here (besides giving 2 weeks and leaving good documentation)? I feel like I am leaving on good terms, despite being a year. I was transparent with my interviewing with my supervisor and manager. I even asked them to meet the offer salary because I'd like to stay. My manager tried to fight for me, but upper management denied him twice. So I decided to accept the other offer. I don't know what good procedure for leaving my job is. Should I get my colleagues gifts or cards? Should I take them out for lunch with my new promotion? There are a select few co-workers who I really want to thank for helping me, maybe just for them? Logistical Downsides of joining a startup! Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:15 PM PDT I am not sure if this is the appropriate medium since it may concern only international students, but I did not know who else to turn to. So I am going to ask anyways. I have been able to obtain an offer from a late stage startup in the bay area and the offer is pretty decent for a fresh grad. But the offer is just one part and I would like to evaluate all aspects of joining a startup vs a well know stable organization? More so, I am interested in the logistics of my employment. I am an international student here in the US and would require work visa sponsorship to continue working for the startup, which the representatives from the startup said, they would file for me, but I have been hearing things like it would be difficult to obtain work visas if you are not employed in well known companies. Even tough immigration claims that visas are granted by lottery, the company applying for one, has a lot of bearing on the approval and things like that. So I am not sure if it would be a wise move for me. I am pretty sure there are people in this sub, who would have been in the same shoes and so, calling out experienced people to throw some light on joining startups and how it might affect my career in the future? What factors do I need to consider before making my decision? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
How Likely Is It That I'll Be Able To Take My Work Home? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:46 PM PDT Hi all, about to graduate in a year. I'm curious as to if employers will let you take your work home with you I have no problem with the idea of doing my work at work. At school I have no problem coding in my classroom during labs and such. I'm just significantly more comfortable working at night, on my personal computer, where my only time limit is when I finally can't bear to stay awake. [link] [comments] |

Worried first job isn't challenging me enough, looking for advice Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:44 PM PDT So a little background: I graduated May 2017 from a liberal arts school with a 2.8 GPA; CS was my major. Almost all classes were taught in C++ and the rest in Python. After 6 months of searching for a job, I offered a role as an "Entry Level Software Developer/Test Engineer" at a test automation company contracting company. I went through about a month of training and then was placed at a company working on "Data Preparation" for a big project. Unfortunately, I am not getting assigned much work to do, and I'm starting to worry that the work I am being assigned may not look for future jobs. We mainly create small tools in Microsoft Access using Visual basic as well as SQL Developer and SQL Server. There is also one application that I created on my own in C#. I have just started doing Leetcode challenges in my spare time, but I am having trouble staying focused. As a result, I have been looking for classes to take outside of work and I think I found a good one that starts this summer in web development, which I don't have much experience in. I have also been trying to come up with ideas for creating an outside project as I don't currently have any. I have been applying to other jobs, but I haven't had any luck and I signed a two year contract to this company so if I leave before then, I have to pay a fee. So I guess what I'm asking is: will my current position look bad when applying to future roles? Would taking this class in web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript. JQuery etc.) be a good idea? Thank you for reading; any and all advice is much appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Asking Company for more money on internship. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:27 AM PDT Last year I went on an internship and they invited me back. I get $20/hr. However I was paying $1400 in rent because I had to look for housing last second. This year I've been looking early and still a decent want with over 2 stars is $1,150 a month. They don't give me anything for living but said ask if I needed any help many interns live in the city or stay with their parents). The apartments go up in price when I only need a three month lease. I also only work 10 weeks so I'm not even there full time. Should I email the company ask for a stipend or something similar? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:30 PM PDT I know that almost every CS major seems to take a core set of courses which seems to be some variation of:
I'm wondering what other courses any of you found to be essential. And I guess this is pretty dependent on what role / industry you're in also but I'd be interested if any of you are willing to share.
Other common courses I see are:
Personally, I have a BS in math and am going to be taking courses to hopefully land a SWE position in about 2 years. I like where I am now and not in a rush to make it into the field ASAP. I'd rather fill in as many gaps as I can within these 2 years so I hopefully won't be too far behind a true CS graduate when I attempt to make the switch. I'm just having a bit of trouble differentiating between which courses are essential and which aren't, beyond the foundational courses. For example, seems like it's a safe bet that databases will be relevant and useful. But how about web development if I don't want to any anything front end? Is computer networks material important to know in general or could I do without? Etc.
Thanks for your input! [link] [comments] |
How do get the attention of recruiters/companies in different city? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:28 PM PDT I'm based in Boston and I can pretty much count on at least 10-20 random pings from people on linkedin / email a day but I am looking to move to either Austin TX or LA and trying to find opportunities out there. I've tried specifically changing my interested cities on linkedin, I think I even tried changing my location to another city in the past... all with 0 results. Of course I can manually start reaching out to recruiters & apply directly, but it would make it so much easier to be able to have things passively reach me too. [link] [comments] |
Finding an online practice buddy Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:10 PM PDT Hi, I am trying to practice online coding interviews, something like this. Except just only sharing screen & talking through the microphone. The problem is, I don't have people around me that are into applying for abroad internships or interested in doing any type of mock interviews with me. Is there a /r/cscareerquestions discord or something else I can go to, to find me a practice buddy to improve our skills with and get better over time? Can be any language, it's just that I want to have a better understanding of my weaknesses and improving that! [link] [comments] |
Best masters degree to go with a Bachelors in Comp. Sci? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:47 PM PDT I'm really interested in doing graduate studies but I'm not really sure about which area to go into. I already have a bachelors degree in Comp Sci and I've been working for about 2 years. I've thought about going for some kind of business degree to compliment my technical side so I could go into management somewhere down the line if I wanted to, but I've heard that a degree in IT or Health Informatics might be a better idea... Tech-related high school internship in NYC? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:50 PM PDT I want to get an internship in a STEM related field, do you know of any in New York City? I'm a junior in high school with programming experience. [link] [comments] |
I got my first internship and I feel afraid Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:45 PM PDT So I am a sophomore doing software engineering and I applied for internships for the summer. Fortunately, I got one with a title of software developer but the problem is that I am too afraid of this because I only took two C++ programming classes and one CS math class. I have 15 days before the internship starts, what should do to prepare myself? [link] [comments] |
Certified Financial Planner -- any online bachelor's programs for working professionals? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:40 PM PDT I am a soon to be Certified Financial Planner (just waiting for my 3 years experience to kick in) at a very well-known name in Finance. I got into this career because I have a real passion for the technical side of investments, but my job I very seldom get to actually challenge myself... I am really just an educator to clients most the time. However, I got into finance to solve problems. My experience is pretty good for being a recent graduate in the financial services industry, as well as my salary. However, I want to get into financial modeling or possibly project management and almost every project revolves around technology. Also, I know there's a real possibility a lot of what I do will get automated in my lifetime, so regardless even if I stay in a finance role, I think CS is a great move and I'm really interested in it. Anyway, I have begun following online courses to teach myself, but believe a degree will help me make a lateral move at my company. Any suggestions for online programs in CS I can take while I work? I definitely want it to be a somewhat legitimate program and the cheaper the better. I would be ~25 giving up a 6 figure salary in a relatively low CoL area by the time I enroll, so I don't want to wind up with no prospects after paying for a degree. [link] [comments] |

Finished background check but received no updates Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:34 PM PDT About two weeks ago I completed my background check via HireRight for an internship and since then (nearing two weeks by the 30th, monday) I haven't heard any updates from my recruiter. Is this normal? I never had any job experience before and this is the first time I've ever had gone through the whole hiring procedure and background check. HireRight only told me that my screening report was completed but I was not given the results to it (I should note I have a clean record and never lied on my background check so I would assume I passed?) Should I be worried? Should I contact my recruiter and ask what's up? Thanks [link] [comments] |
A couple of questions about the situation my job is putting me in. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:32 PM PDT Hello, I work as a contractor for a big consulting company. I was told today that I would possibly have to relocate across the country after already moving to my current location a couple of weeks ago. I am fully aware frequently relocating is part of the job. However, I am being told I might have to pay the lease breaking out of pocket (I got a lease for couple months bc I was told that I would be here for an extended period of time) and might have to move to the new location in two weeks. Finally and my main issue, I am also being told that the position in the new location is more focused on business analysis than code development. All of this is a long winded way to ask, is this normal? Is there anything I can do to force them to reimburse me for my lease break? Finally, after two years of mostly doing analysis work would I even be seen as a developer to other companies or would I still have to apply for entry level positions? I think it is important to note that I cannot just quit, since I signed a contract that would force me to pay a large sum of money if I did quit before 1 years. The company is will to reimburse me for my flight and the mailing of my things. Also, it is not guaranteed that I am moving just yet but it does seem very likely. Any advice would be great. Google Cloud Next '18 - Should I Go? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:01 PM PDT TLDR: I am a college student at a meh school. I am really focusing on networking to open doors. Is the networking/learning opportunity of going to the conference worth the high cost(~2.3k total expenditure)? Can anyone share past experiences at Google Dev conferences? Background: I am a second year CS student at an ok school on the east coast. I really want to set myself up to have the most options possible after graduating and I believe I am well spoken and can make good impressions on people. The Dillema: I am a college student. I don't have abundant amounts of money. I am going to a conference in NYC next weekend for developers and am looking forward to networking and sitting in on workshops. I recently learned about Google Cloud Next, and as someone who already uses GCP for a few things I was naturally intrigued as the conference is based around their Cloud Platform. Upon signup, you get $500 in GCP credit which is great. I looked through the list of talks and workshops that will be happening and have identified ones I feel I would benefit most from. I also see this as a great networking opportunity. I would love to go, but the conference costs $1000 just for a ticket, not counting a round-trip flight, hotel, and food. The Questions: If I go, it would cost me a lot of money. Is the networking/learning opportunity worth the cost? Can anyone vouch for the quality of Google's conferences? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:52 PM PDT At my community college I have been double majoring in Business and Computer Science. I did not take the Physics series so I did not meet the requirements to a few universities under their CS program. I am interested in data science and machine learning. Here are the schools I'm considering: UC Riverside (Computer Science w/ Business Applications) UC Los Angeles (Business Economics) UC Irvine (Business Information Management, waitlisted) All schools are offering great financial aid packages that will not leave me with much debt. So cost is not a factor. I've been to all three campuses and think they each have their individual merits. I am really fortunate to have gotten into UCLA because my GPA is middle of the road. But, how likely is it to break into data science with a BA in BizEcon? My mentor mentions that it is possible if I pursue a MCS following my BA and even argues that an Economics degree will prepare me for that field. And the LA area may make it easier to find an internship. At UCR, I have already talked with a few professors and have been told that I am a great candidate for their ML labs. I guess my issue really lies in - will I be more competitive for a MCS program/data science field coming from UCLA's BizEcon or UCR/UCI(if I get in) CS oriented degrees? [link] [comments] |
