I just want to put this out there, but I applied for the Student Pack from GitHub and was accepted. It's massively inspired me to start looking at new things and is really a great scheme! Just a thankyou to all the companies involved, rock on!

I made a small chat app using socket.io and node - try it out

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:30 PM PDT

So i've been doing this school project about making a chat application with socket.io and node. I think it was really fun to build! And it ended up being quite nice i think. Anyways, i felt like sharing it for some feedback and im also secretly hoping for a minor stress test of the system. It stores the last 500 messages in a file and discards any messages older than that. It is completely open, so it's basically like one big chat-room for anyone connected. I've used Vue for the frontend and express for the backend. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

And if anyone got questions about the socket.io part feel free to ask. It was really easy to setup.

    Question regarding GDPR

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:05 PM PDT

I am currently working on a SaaS product that should allow freelancers to make their billing process easier and more efficient. The problem I'm now facing is that users of my service should be able to enter personal data of their customers (name, e-mail, address, UID, etc.).

As far as I have understood, if you are going to process personal data you need consent of the person the data belongs to. But how should I manage to do this with data which I don't enter, but rather gets entered by my users?

Is that even legal any more or am I missing something?

    Frustrated with CSS

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:20 AM PDT

One of the biggest frustrations trying to create my own web pages is just wrestling with CSS. I've worked with bootstrap and similar libraries, but I feel it's valuable to learn the underlying CSS. But sometimes I spend so much time just trying to position things the way I want. Even following tutorials on specific CSS elements, it seems like half of the time something else on my page is interfering. It's gets frustrating. I'm partially venting, and partially looking for help. Any suggestions for new web developer?

What is the quickest way to compress images in bulk?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:57 PM PDT

Had some latency issues and thanks u/impshum in this post, I was able to reduce my latency from 9s to 2.5s. The plugins that helped the most were Autoptimize and WPCache

I still have one issue of image compression and was wondering how do I bulk compress images for free so I can download the entire contents by ftp, compress them and re-upload them without having to link the files all over again. The CMS is Wordpress. I tried some plugins but they only offer 500-1000 free compressions.

Trying to get data from a mobile apps API through HTTP(s) calls

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:58 AM PDT

    Hello!

The app im interested in is "TooGoodToGo" which is an app to order leftover food from resturants. The problem is that youll need to constatly check the app to know if some place has food available since it gets sold out pretty quickly. So what I hope to do is create some program that checks for updates from time to time and can notify me when a resturant im interested in has leftovers ready.

This is is my progress so far:

    • I know the app is running on Firebase.
    • Ive packet sniffed its HTTP calls to the API with URL encoded data.
    • I know all the API calls requires authentication, so Ill probably have to do the login before making those calls aswell.

Right now im trying to login using the exact same request headers and URL encoded data, but this is the response from the server and I have no idea why:

[VB.NET] Best Approach to multiple lists, each with 3 checkboxes, where only 1 can be selected?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:49 PM PDT

Here is the wire-frame I was given. Each Header (underlined in red) has multiple "categories" where the user must select "Update", "Inquiry", or "Hide", but ONLY 1 of those three.

I started manually building the page with bootstrap grid and individual checkboxes, but I realized there's probably something already built to do something like this. Asp:ListView? Asp:CheckBoxList? Anyone have any clue how to tackle this?

    Thanks in advance!

Is the 'Visual studio free for students' still a thing?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:43 PM PDT

Hi! While browsing here I came across a post in which someone mentioned Visual studio Pro version being free for students. However after googling it, I found an article which linked to a website (http://www.dreamspark.com). When I try to access it - it shows '404 Web site not found'.

Is this not a thing anymore or have they simply moved it to another site I just can't find?

(I'm not sure I'd get the most out of it anyway since I'm barely using the things community edition offers, but would be neat to get an idea of what the pro has to offer)

Is this typical for a first job as a junior dev?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:07 PM PDT

    Hey webdev,

I'm feeling like a failure already. I'm self-taught and took the approach to apply as early as possible. So, after about 3 months of learning on my own, I applied to jobs.

I got hired for a full stack position two weeks ago using Postgres, node.js, express, react, and typescript...I only have experience building my own basic websites with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and I've completed Colt Steele's web dev bootcamp course. So, no experience with React or typescript, and very beginner JavaScript.

The job is a remote position for a startup, and this is my first ever web development job.

On day one, they gave me access to their github repo and told me to get the app working on my machine and learn the routes and how the app works by the end of week 1. They wanted me to figure it out as much as I could on my own. They also had several other tasks that they viewed as minor fixes.

I had no idea how to even start, but the lead architect said that the documentation is pretty self-explanatory, and the two devs on the team are super busy trying to finish the product for a demo soon. So, if I have questions, I need to be very concise so they can help quickly, and get back to their priorities.

So, I spent the first week banging my head against the wall. I didn't even know what questions to ask because I have never cloned a project of this magnitude and set up environment variables. I know nothing about Postgres, React, or Typescript and I have no experience with a project like this.

I got as far as I could by Googling. And I asked questions early but they said to follow the documentation and to fix the docs when I come across errors.

I finally gave up and just started taking screenshots of error messages and uploading them on our message board and asking if anyone had seen these before.

The devs helped out a bit but they said that my questions are answered in the documentation and it's pretty clear cut if I just follow the docs. So, I felt stupid for even asking.

Then, this week they have me fixing all of these errors in the CSS and I feel like I know CSS pretty well, but I have no idea how CSS works in React.

So, it turn outs that each dev works on their own section from frontend to backend and styling it as they go. Meaning, one part of the app is coded so much differently than the other part, and if they use someone else's component, then it just looks like a jumbled mess to me.

I feel like this job is waaaay beyond my skill level and a remote job is not conducive to learning on the job.

This week, I started building my own Todo App in React just to see how React works and added my own styles. When I was showing the lead what I was working on, he said that I need to be working on the actual product, not on my own personal projects...I was working on this todo app so I could even understand React, but he said I need to do that on my own time.

I...I don't even know where to start with their codebase. It's massive. So, today, I spent 6 hours playing around with the codebase and really getting nowhere.

I'm just so confused and frustrated.

I feel like such a failure and each time I ask for guidance, they say to check the documentation. I've read the documentation numerous times, but it uses such technical terms, so many dependencies, and code is patched together that I just don't understand how "it's pretty straight forward" and that there are also errors in the docs that I should fix...but I don't even know what the docs are saying.

Is this normal for a junior dev to mostly figure everything out on their own and work independently like this?

I feel like quitting already, but 2 weeks into my first job would look terrible. I need this job, but I feel sick each day because I'm just feeling like a complete failure for not knowing how to even get started on "simple" stuff.

tl;dr: My first ever web dev job is working with languages I've never used and I'm told to work independently on the project, not learn the skills on work time with simple projects like a todo app, and to be very clear when I'm asking questions so the devs can answer the question quickly. Is this a normal work environment that I just need to get used to in web dev?

Looking for an "open API" recommendation..

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:29 AM PDT

I'm looking to start an API for a particular mobile game. I can establish the data model but I cannot possibly add all of the contents by myself. So, it got me thinking maybe there's some sort of wiki-like, JSON "open API" where:

    • Anyone can contribute/submit contents.

    • Admins can approve or reject submissions.

    • Only admins can modify the data model.

I've been googling a bit, but to be honest, I am not sure of the proper terms to search for. I keep getting results to public APIs.

    Any existing service like this?

EDIT: Found out MediaWiki has a REST API built-in. I may try that, but I'm looking for others still.

EDIT2: MediaWiki REST API is for getting the contents of the pages. I need something to get the contents of specified data models, kinda like GraphQL, but has a wiki feel.

    Finally got my first client...

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:20 AM PDT

and I'm freaking out ! I've been self teaching HTML, CSS, Javascript and Jquery for a few months now and I'm doing alright so far.

I've finally landed my very first paying client for a website and I have no idea of how to go about it. I'm somewhat confident in my coding skills but I'm just unsure of how to get started and how to code something that will look good and modern.

Any tips for a junior dev here? Is there maybe a template I could use to build something cool?
