Is $63k a good salary for a new grad in Raleigh, NC?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 11:11 AM PST

I am from a high col area, so this sounds low. I am aware that NC is a much cheaper area, but idk what is a good salary in Raleigh. I have two weeks to accept the offer, should I move on?

In your experience, is it possible to start your career in government? Is this a bad career move?

I'm close to graduating, and I'm hoping to get a job in government either state or municipal. I'm looking for good benefits and not insane work/life balance. Is this a good career move or is it even possible?

Fall Internship Questions - Would you recommend?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 12:19 PM PST

People who have done or are planning to do a fall internship, how did you recruit for fulltime opportunities while doing the fall internship? While interning, how do you take time off to interview especially if its with a decent number of companies? What was your experience like? Would you recommend interning in the fall?

What would it take for you to leave full-time for contract?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:59 PM PST

I recently received a job offer for contract to hire and was considering leaving my full time position as they made it seem very likely that I would be hired at the end of the contract.

Once I received the agreement, the duration wasn't even mentioned, but they were sure to let me know I could be dropped at any time. The pay is almost double my current salary, but I had to turn it down.

My question is, what should I be looking for in terms of contract agreements for web dev positions?

How do I deal with lare deadline for my dream internship at Pixar?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 12:24 PM PST

Hello I am a freshman CS/CE major with a passion and some experience with computer graphics. One of my dream internships is the Pixar Undergraduate Program.

Here is my dilemma, Pixar recruits so late in the game! The application wasn't up until about a month ago and the deadline for he application isn't until February! To put things in perspective I accepted an offer for an internship this summer in late October and most of my other targeted internships have similar deadlines. (Blizzard and Apple)

I don't know what to do with this because its almost like I would have to risk not having an internship if I want to even apply to Pixar. Pixar doesn't open up their application until much after most other internship experiences give feedback so I would have to not apply/potentially pass on offers to wait for Pixars to open up.

Why this worries me is that I have NO CLUE how competitive my portfolio would be for the Pixar internship. I have no idea how competitive it is or roughly what my odds are.

How do I play this game? Would it be ok to apply even though I have accepted a position already to hopefully get the email of a recruiter (perhaps I can apply early) and see if I can even make it to the first stage? This is probably crazy but Is it possible to ask them to consider me for 2019 internship?

    JP Morgan TAP analyst questions

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:20 PM PST

I'm an incoming full-time TAP analyst for JP Morgan this summer.

I'm aware that there are many different areas you can work for as a TAP analyst at JP. I was wondering if anyone could provide a brief description of the notable areas and recommend some that I should shoot for. I'm still unsure of the areas that I am interested in so I'm looking for some guidance.

I enjoy back-end programming if that helps.

    Ulcerative colitis and Programming

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:10 AM PST

    Hi there

I am keen to hear from anyone who like me suffers from ulcerative colitis and is a web developer / software developer who works in I.T. . I live in the UK.

I would like to find out how your work / life balance is effected during a flare up? how you manage the stress and cope with day to day working? How do your employers take it?

I have suffered with this illness for 6 years. Its been manageable on the whole however my recent flare has left me shaken up, low in confidence, not working at the moment but am self learning new web technologies throughout the day etc

My aim is to discover how other sufferers cope, there is always an opportunity to learn and I feel stuck at the moment and when I am ready to work again it would be good to go armed with knowledge.

It doesn't have to necessary be this specific medical condition.

    Thank you

[Please help] I'm in my first job as a developer and the team I'm on seems dysfunctional. Should I try to switch teams (if possible), switch departments (if possible), or try to find a new job?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 10:30 AM PST

I'll probably sound a bit loopy because the situation has me pretty anxious and frustrated that I'm going to fail due to no fault of my own. The team I'm on hasn't made any progress in the months I've been assigned to them and I feel like the lead on my team doesn't show any leadership and I have no mentorship. On top of this, they have me pair coding with another dev who really does not want to pair code and keeps me out of the loop. I really feel like, at some point, people on the business side of things are going to notice I'll be out of a job. Right now I spend most of the day trying to learn new skills and not forget what I've already learned since they haven't given me any tasks. What would you do in my position?

Methods of spreading my job search nationwide or globally?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 11:50 AM PST

This is probably an incredibly dumb question... I'm sorry. I just graduated with my BS degree and am starting my job search. The thing is, I am absolutely open as to where I can work. I have zero ties to where I am. I've never done anything like this before and don't know where to begin. Should I just pick locations at random and send my resume out that way? Should I mention it on my resume, or will it be "obvious" when they look at my address and see that it's out of state? Are there any other tricks or methods to use here?

4 weeks into Revature bootcamp and I realize I despise coding.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 09:12 AM PST

tl;dr I hate coding and developing software but I already have the cs degree. What other paths could I take?

Just graduated with a BS CS degree and 3.0gpa and then jumped on board to Revature since I needed a job.

I've always strongly disliked and am horrible at coding since I started the degree, but I thought I could push through for the family. Now I'm just sitting here despising my life and dreading the future. There's many personal reasons why I need money but I just hate coding so much.

Specifically, when I got to "developing the webapp" part of the Revature bootcamp is the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm ok with singular small assignments ("Make a program that demonstrates inheritance"), but when it comes to a project ("Make a web app"), I just hate my life.

Is there any other related paths I could take that don't involve coding much? I'm okay with html and css. I also like bug testing and going through code and trying to figure out how it works. I also like video games but I hate coding them.

is this the right time to start ? *Emergency help

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:43 PM PST

    I'm an International student

Earlier plan was to apply for Fall in De Anza (aiming for transfer to UC or SJSU) and to spend my free time in next months upto August brushing up my math, CS skills.

Suddenly, made up my mind to apply for spring asap which has a deadline coming on Jan 31st. I'm in a plan of distributing units equally over my next few quarters and finally transfer to University in Fall 2020(If possible- early).

Now a little insight on my fears

    a) is my state of my mind and plan good ? Whether this last minute process worth at all or shall i wait up-to fall ?

    b) Whether spring admissions in community college affect our transfer positively or negatively ?

    d) Any other important things to consider because i don't have much time to do research ?( i have few friends already working in Silicon Valley- accommodation wouldn't be a problem i hope)

e)If any International student reading this, Do you have any experience in F1 VISA interview when you applied for community college, applying for VISA in February- Is it a wise thing to do as i heard majority of VISA grants are given during April-May for fall ?

    f) Would it be wise to speak out plans of our transfer to 4 year University when Visa Officer questions 'Why are you opting for Community College' ?

received job offer from a big tech company while PERM process in US pending. What now?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:06 PM PST

I am a Canadian living in the US. My current company applied for green card status for me and they've completed the labor study (batched) and I'm about one month from analyst review completing. I believe there's one more step after this. I don't want to throw away pending green card status but this is a huge once in a life time opportunity with a big tech company.

My application is for a software engineer position and if I take offer it would be for equivalent role. Should I reach out to recruiters to explain and see if there's anything they can do? I really have no idea how this works when transitioning jobs while on a visa with a specific company. I have a TN visa that's good for another two years.

What are my options? I'm asking here since tech has a lot of transplants and what not. I'm extremely hesitant to reach out to my immigration lawyers since they technically work for my current company.

Thanks for reading! Appreciate it, guys!

Can I get a job in programming without a degree?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:01 PM PST

Hey guys, obvious throwaway but I'd like to get some opinions from people who may have been in my position before or are familiar with hiring practices.

I'm in my mid 30s working a job that is completely unrelated to tech. The pay is comfortable (a bit above 60k) but I find myself spending a lot of my time coding on the side in some hopes that there is a way for me to break into a programming job.

I was going to university for CS but ended up dropping out due to depression. I stopped going to classes and failed my lab classes despite doing well on other classes (operating systems, algorithms, etc). I only bring this up because I really disliked the university setting and while I realize that going back to school to finish my degree is a solution, it's one that I would like to avoid until absolutely necessary.

It seems like web development is a good way to get my foot in the door but there are a lot of people on this sub that seem to believe that it is not worth the trouble given the high supply of junior web devs.

I have a github with projects and my resume seems to be up to snuff but it's pretty hard to know that objectively as I have not made a strong effort to go job hunting as every listing seems to want people with a lot of professional experience.

Sorry for this wall of text, I will try and break this down into key questions

    • What is the best approach to looking for a job in programming for someone with no professional experience and no degree?

    • Is going back to school necessary? If so, are there any programs that I can do online that are worth a damn and aren't a complete waste of time? (Did I mention I hate school?)

    • I have no real roots where I am currently, what markets would be good for someone looking to get into development? Any tips/keywords for conducting nationwide searches in the US for programming work?

    • If my goal was to work remotely, are there any guidelines that I should follow going from 0 experience to being an effective remote developer capable of working in a team and being aware of the typical production pipeline? I'm open to any suggestions here and this one in particular is not something I want instantly, just stating that it is a long term goal for me.

Any answers to these questions or suggestions to how I could set myself apart from the massive influx of graduates applying for these jobs would be very helpful. Thanks for your time guys.

From webmaster to Front End Engineer?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:41 PM PST

I have a current job as a webmaster that primarily works on WordPress site on Apache. So basic HTML, css, jQuery, and php skills.

I managed to get an interview for a more traditional front end software engineer position at an insurance/bank company. I will be expected to answer questions by coding live during the interview.

    Any resources, tips, guidance?

UK CompSci grad getting job at a US startup

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:35 PM PST

Graduating this summer, from a pretty high ranking University, have an internship at a Big-N in UK and some freelance work under my belt. Ideally I'd like to get a job at a US startup. Has anyone managed to do this, could you describe what the process entails? I've been looking on angellist, and a lot of companies there say they'll provide visa sponsorships. Also, does anyone have any advise on whether it's better for a grad to look for jobs in the Silicon Valley/SF area, or other less competitive cities. Cheers.

Should I do an internship after I graduate?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 11:48 AM PST

I'm graduating in May and I'm a double major, computer science and Geoscience.

I chose my Geoscience major first and almost finished it before I declared my computer science major to add on to it. This has left me doing nothing the past two years except for CS classes and math(no Gen eds left to give me easy semesters) which was such an intense workload that I had to quit my job and take out student loans.

I'm being told about several internship opportunities for two or three months in the summer. Should I do an internship or roll the dice and hope someone hires me?

Most internship applications are due by February, but companies told me they wouldn't interview for jobs until roughly April.

I'm afraid I'll be left with no job or internship.

    Thank you all.

Edit: I have no prior internship and a few projects on github to show people. I know I'm going to make a great junior dev, but it's proving it that's hard.

Should I ask for food + lyft reimbursements for an on.site if a company doesn't offer?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 12:41 PM PST

Not sure if the question is relevant to this subreddit but also not sure where to post it. I'm inter.viewing with two companies who have not offered me food reimbursements, should I ask them for it or simply send in my receipts after the inter.view? Edit: the company DID fly me out. All the other companies I've ever interviewed for have ALWAYS offered food and travel reimbursements.

Has anyone ever told their boss that they don't enjoy the work they are being given? How did it turn out?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 08:05 PM PST

I was hired as a software developer, but it's been 6 months and all I do is reports and production support. I honestly can count the lines of code I have written on 1 hand.

I've been trying to find a new job, but it's been slim pickings. I want to salvage what I have here at my current job, and mention that I am not happy and have zero interest in doing production support. I have dreaded every morning. Our team has no communication, no one talks to each other, I have no clue what is going on. I get assigned bitch work with no context, and no one ever responds whenever I ask for help with something.

This is all after doing 5 years of actual software development, it's not as if I just got out of college.

I have an offer, but I want more PTO, and the recuiter doesn't seem like he's advocating for me

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:46 PM PST

I've been working with a recruiter on a position for the past month, and it has resulted in an offer. The offer is at the bottom of my salary range, but the real kicker is it only comes with 15 days of PTO (sick time included). I've been in this industry for over 15 years, and have typically had 4 weeks of vacation plus additional sick days, so this would be a step backwards for me.

PTO is a bigger deal than even salary to me, but the recruiter I'm working with is pressuring me to take the offer as is, and he's claiming that not only is there no flexibility with PTO for this position, but that I'm crazy to even ask because it's highly unusual that a company would give a new employee extra PTO unless they were an executive. This seems like BS to me, and I'm kind of turned off by the recruiter trying to pressure me into taking the position even though I'm not happy with the package.

I really do like the job, but I have other interviews in the pipeline, and I have the financial security to walk away from this opportunity and wait for something better if I want. I'm considering a counter offer of an additional 5 days of PTO or twice the value of that PTO in additional salary. How unreasonable is it for me to counter like that, and if necessary, turn down a position I like over 5 days of PTO? Also, how suspicious should I be of the recruiter's claim that negotiating for more PTO is extremely rare for non-executives?
