Question: Would you all be interested in a platform to connect mentors and mentees specifically for our field?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:46 PM PST

I apologize in advance if this isn't the best subreddit to post on, but I read the FAQ, searched the sidebar, and couldn't find anything on this.

Ever since I've been subscribed to this subreddit, I've noticed we have quite a diverse community (though I do realize it's heavily skewed toward college students from looking at the 2016 demographic results).

I was thinking about starting a free open source project that would serve as a platform to help connect mentors and mentees together in the field of CS where mentors could provide everything from mock interviews, to career advice, to domain specific knowledge (because sometimes, documentation and Coursera videos can only get you so far).

I would love to be a mentor/mentee myself and put in the time to make this happen, but my question is would you all appreciate and use a service like this?

    Thanks!

Is Silicon Valley generally a more "difficult" place to work if you're average?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:29 PM PST

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my hypothesis is that since there is such a high density of tech talent in the Bay Area, job stability (to some extent) is less stable for someone is objectively "average" despite there being more opportunities. For someone is more on the average side and looking for work life balance and stability, would working for a less competitive market (E.g. San Diego) make more sense?

    Quant vs Software at Quant

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 09:55 AM PST

Is a CS degree worth it to try to become an actual quant? Or does it need to something more math heavy like physics or math? Would double majoring in CS and Math open the door to Quant jobs?

Also does anyone know how difficult it is to switch from say a software engineer at Two sigma to a quant at two sigma?

Good companies to work for in Boulder/Denver area?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:21 PM PST

Boulder/Denver has been ranked pretty high in many threads on here for tech cities, especially in the most recent thread where it was consistently ranked in the top 5-10. What makes Denver/Boulder so great? What are some of the best companies to work for there?

I can see that they have a Google, Salesforce, and IBM office, but what else makes Boulder/Denver so great?

Is there a better "programmer career resource" than John Sonmez (Simple Programmer)?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 06:48 AM PST

I'm curious as to what youtube channels, books, or blogs are out there that cover every aspect of being a software developer (career and code). John Sonmez is the only one I know of now that does that. He has the Simple Programmer blog and YT Channel. I like his stuff enough to keep reading/watching. There's some good advice there, I feel. Still, I have to wonder how much his stuff applies to just him. I feel like I have to "wade" through a lot. Plus, he's almost ALWAYS selling something. On one hand, if it's your medium, you can do what you wish. On the other, it makes me take what he says with a lot more grains of salt.

So I'm wondering if there's better blogs/resources out there that cover the whole "pie" of software development careers.

Which companies send you a coding challenge by default?

Are there any companies that send you a coding challenge when you apply, before they look at your resume?

Two people at my work are really making me hate my job.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:46 PM PST

So this has been on my mind for the last six months and today I realized how much I have begun to hate my job. Tomorrow is my first day back after the Christmas holidays and I literally dont want to go back to work because I absolutely hate my job and I am miserable.

There are two guys at my place who contribute to that feeling. Lets call them Jim and Tom.

I have literally never done anything bad to Jim. Yet I saw he didnt like me on my first day of work. I do not understand his dislike but I am pretty sure it exists. If I have to take a wild guess then its probably insecurity or something. Another reason could be that I am a foreigner and maybe he does not like foreigners. He is nice to me on my face but it becomes very clear that he does not like me. I cannot do anything to confront him because he would probably not admit it. A big problem is that I carpool with this guy and I dont have a car. If he kicks me out of the car then I have to travel with trains which is much more difficult and more costly. I have to travel to another city to go to work.

The second one is Tom. Tom is a very clever and cunning guy. He is very careful and would not just come out and attack me in the open. This is the same guy who brought cake to the office, invited everyone(except me). I realized how much he hated me when I was bringing a jar of candy to share with him and his face was filled with rage when he saw me coming. I can understand why he hates me because we had an argument a while back. He shook hands with me in front of our boss but I realize that he did not do it by heart. I wanted to patch up with him but seeing the things he has done so far makes me never want to patch up with him again. It seems he never loses a chance to make me look bad.

Now here is what they do. Both of them talk about me behind my back. They think that I do not know but its painfully obvious to me what they are doing. It seems like they are always on the lookout for the smallest mistake I make and then say shit about me behind my back. I know that because I have caught Tom on more than one occasion talking about me. I pretended that I didnt hear anything. When I am explaining about my tasks in the meeting then both of them exchange looks with each other. They would even say shit like I just copied code my previous project to this project and dont do anything. Sometimes it really feels like these two are cornering me. I dont know how to explain my self but it seems like both of them are always on the lookout for any mistake I do to make me look/ sound like a monster to other colleagues. There are a lot of things that I could write but sometimes you can just get a bad feeling from some people. Its like they are always on the lookout for any mistake I made and try to get me in trouble. With Jim its just dislike but with Tom it sometimes feels like he actually wants to ruin my career.

The thing is that I literally cannot do anything about both of them. Jim is the guy that i carpool with. If I complain about him or something then I may not be able to use the car anymore. I have to travel with train which means I am losing money for train travel every month and its much more difficult.

To make things worse, our team lead is going to leave and there are rumors that Tom might replace him. Which makes me wonder what his behavior would be when he is our boss. I have decided that I would resign if that happens.

Now start the other things that are complicating my situation. The problem is that I cannot switch easily. I am really bad at interviews and usually fuck up in interviews. The interviewers almost always find something wrong about me during my interviews. I am getting a good salary at my current job which I may not get elsewhere. If I lose my current job then I will lose my visa. The problem is that I have a girlfriend in this country and I may have to leave her if I lose my visa. I also like this country and dont want to leave for the next two years.

    Please give me some advice.

    Why isn’t WebDev declining?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:16 PM PST

Wordpress (and others) automatically formats and customizes the design of a website, so there is no need for front end developers. Obviously, this isn't the case; where am I going wrong?

    Non-tech companies in Boston hiring?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 06:35 PM PST

I read the best place to work if you just want a simple 9-5 is at a non-tech company. I am in Boston for a month to see what happens here and I am looking around but so far I am only being approached by startups.

I checked indeed and glassdoor but all that's showing up are tech related companies.

Anybody know of non-tech companies that are looking?

Does this mean I've been rejected? (Bloomberg Application Email)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:25 PM PST

I recently applied for the Bloomberg '2018 Software Engineer' position in NYC.

I received an email from them a few days ago (Boxing Day actually...) that says I'll be better suited to apply for a different position but the link provided to said position is the one I applied for originally?

    Email Screenshot

Does this mean I've been rejected? When I go onto the application portal it now says 'No Longer Being Considered'.

    34 and I’ve never been...

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:11 PM PST

I've been doing a bunch of soul searching lately - trying to figure out exactly what I'm doing incorrectly.

My problem - I've never been promoted.

Here's a bit of my history. I'm a software engineer. The longest span I've been at any one company is 4.5 years. A few companies I worked at for less than a year. I've moved around a bit.

My reviews have always been good. If you put weight on those type of things. I've never been fired. I've worked for some small and ~1500 employee companies.

I recently started a new position. I'm totally back at square one again.

Additionally, I am 13/18 courses done with an MS in Computer Science. Always trying to improve.

What could I be doing better? Any initial thoughts without knowing the entire backstory. Wrong timing? Moving around too much? I see people skyrocket and wonder what they're doing better. Hmm.

How to renegotiate my internship hours?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 11:08 AM PST

The situation is somewhat uncommon, so I'll explain:

My government pays me to do an internship in a foreign country (similar to Erasmus but not quite) lasting 6 months, started 2 months ago so I've 4 months left.

In these two months I've come to the conclusion that I have no interest in the company besides the internship, almost all of what I do consists on handling a CMS and tweaking CSS, and due to how the company works I have no hopes of that changing.

Changing company is not an option and the 6 months experience would help towards my CV, but since I'm barely learning anything I intent to negotiate a reduction of working hours (currently 30 a week).

    Relevant facts on this matter:

    • The company itself doesn't provide me with a salary, they get me "for free".

    • 30 hours is the max for this kind of internship, other two colleagues I came in with work 20 and 22 hours respectively.

    • The company is happy with my performance and has expressed so a couple of times.

    • I do have the feel the company would like for me to stay after the internship

All in all, I feel it would make sense for them to allow it, but I guess they also have no real reason to do so, I have never engaged in any kind of negotiations like this so I really don't know how to go about it

Biomedical Science student looking for getting into programming jobs.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:04 PM PST

Hi everyone, So a little bit about myself first. I am currently a second-year student pursuing a degree in Biomedical Science at a fairly competitive university. I realized in the middle of my second year, that programming is something I would like to do in future in a biological setting. Are there any jobs, other than in the field of bioinformatics, that satisfies this requirement and are fairly well-paying? And if so, is my program even the right choice? I cannot take any courses in CS right now because of lack of funding, but I am willing to teach myself everything that is required. Thanks for your input.

How do you usually reach out to your contacts when you're job searching?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:41 PM PST

Earlier this year, a manager of mine asked if I was getting tired of my current company. He reached out to some of his contacts and got me an interview at another company. A few months ago, I was talking to someone and she said all of her interviews came from references.

I've never reached out to anyone asking if their company were hiring. To me, it seems odd to ask someone if I haven't been in touch with them. How often do you usually keep in contact with someone to feel comfortable reaching out like this - every few months, years, etc?

For tech contractors who are employed by their own business instead of a W2, how will the new tax changes affect your income?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:06 PM PST

I am posting this under CSCareerquestions because although this question can be applied to several industries, this will affect a number of tech workers with some experience who are freelancing

Right now I am currently employed as a contractor as a W2 under a contracting agency. I've noticed the pass through tax rate has been cut from over 30% to 20%. I am still plugging in numbers to figure out whether it's worth it to change my current working arrangement.

For those working under their own S Corp, LLC, etc how is the new tax plan affecting your income?

Next step in my career? To leave or not (1.5 years experience)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:12 PM PST

    Hi all,

I am class of 2016 CS graduate, and currently am working at a midsize company in SF that provides B2B SaaS. I've been working there since Fall 2016, and recently have been feeling a bit uneasy as to what my future should be. I've been checking Glassdoor and LinkedIn, and it seems like there are so many other cool companies out there where I could be working and building cool things. Was wondering if I could get some input as to whether/when I should leave and take the next step in my career:

Some reasons I've been considering leaving:

    • Company seems to be fairly old for a SF tech company- most everyone on my team is > 35 and seems to have kids. As a result, I don't really have much in common with them outside of work.
    • Process slows everything down. It takes forever to get from PR to production, and it seems like everything has to be done a specific way or else it won't get through code review.
    • I work on an infrastructure team, and as a result I haven't done a lot of coding and been working on more ops related stuff. Worried about future employability.
    • Product isn't that interesting, and growth seems to have stagnated in the past few years
    • Compensation bump by switching companies

Reasons I would consider staying (at least for a little while):

    • compensation reviews are coming up, and there is a chance of promotion within the next 6 months, although I'm not sure whether I'm on track for it
    • Difficulty of finding a new job- How hard is it to interview while working at the old company? I'm not sure whether i can take a PTO day every time I do an on-site.

Any advice would be appreciated! Or if I have any misconceptions please point them out as well!

    Thanks

Quant opportunities in the west coast

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 12:06 PM PST

Basically my career goal right now is to get into quant work, however, I don't want to spend my life in Chicago or NYC. Are there any decent firms located on the west coast that I could realistically move to in the future?

What's the best way to get competing offers before graduation?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 11:36 AM PST

So I got an internship with Microsoft for this summer. If I get a return offer for full time I want other offers from tech companies to talk about to them. I also graduate next fall so I don't have much time to find offers if I wait till after the internship (is that really enough time?).

So how do I find other offers to compete with what microsoft can give me? I got the Microsoft job because I applied through a special program which kinda got me through the resume screen, but I still had to go through the whole coding interview circuit, which I had basically nothing other than some small personal projects to put on. I have an internship that I worked at, and am now working remotely at that I can also put on. Now this resume won't get me through the screens of any other companies virtually guaranteed. And I've applied to a decent number of them.

So do I just wait till the internship actually happens and start applying? Do I just put that I'm going to be working there so that I can get through an initial "Well he at least made it past the Microsoft interview" or something?

Would CSCQ be interested in this?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:24 PM PST

Hey everyone, I'm currently a 3rd-year university student whose set myself a strict new years resolution. Starting today (January 1st), I'm doing a leetcode problem every day and writing a detailed solution for it. I also plan to document my time this summer as a software engineering intern. I'm in the midst of making myself up a personal website with a blog on it soon, but for now, I'll be writing medium articles. I was planning on doing youtube videos (VLOG type of style), but I feel like no one would really want to watch me VLOG about CS nonsense while I walk around my university. The whole purpose of this is to show my transition from a CS student to a full-time Software Engineer at a great company. Along the way, I would also discuss how CS life is at a university as well. Let me know if any of you would be interested in following this and what platform would be more effective (YouTube or Personal Blog).

I need some help.... parents are kicking me out and I have to find a job pronto.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:59 PM PST

So my parents aren't paying for my school anymore and I need to find a place to live. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get a decent paying job doing programming work? I haven't finished my degree yet but I am proficient in java and swift and have some web development knowledge. I have an app published on the ios app store if that helps.

I really need to become independent as fast as possible, I would prefer to work in programming and make more money as opposed to flipping burgers somewhere.

    Help with Internship Decision

    Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:58 PM PST

I'm currently deciding between Google, Facebook, and the KPCB Fellows program for an internship for Summer 2018. I've obviously been very fortunate to get these offers, so now it's basically making a decision. I don't really care about compensation as all three are around the same, but in terms of best summer experience and prestige, what are the general opinions about these three intern programs?
