Does anyone here use digitalocean (or similar) for development?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 07:16 AM PST

Im a bit of a digital nomad at the moment and I bounce around machines a lot. So having a local development environment isnt working out -- stuffs always on the wrong machine. Github minimizes this to some degree but I want to be able to sit down at any machine and get to work without having to worry about whether this machine has Xampp and clone the repo and yadda yadda

I'd like to be able to basically log in to a remote server where all my development can be done on that server rather than me making changes locally and FTP'ing the files up for every incremental test.

Any tips out there? Whats working for you?

    Cheers

Freelancers, how much do you make?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 03:39 AM PST

This is a question you can't really ask people in person, but Reddit is more or less anonymous, right? So:

    1) How much do you make a month in freelance webdev?

    2) How many assignments do you take a month?

    3) Do you charge by the hour, week or project, and how much?

    4) Experience level and specialty/stack?

*Instead of "it depends," please ballpark an average or go with the number from last year 2017.

Ways of having client sign contract remotely?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 02:14 PM PST

Hi, I have a potential client who is too far of a drive away to meet up. I was wondering what the most cost efficient way of having a client sign a contract remotely is? This is also for a small site so I'd rather not spend a lot on eSignature sites.

    Thanks!!

Questions About Transferring Website Made on Vistaprint

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:18 AM PST

I run a business in Indianapolis and created my website on Vistaprint Sitebuilder back in 2013 (Yes, I know that Vistaprint is not recommended). Regardless of the limitations on Vistaprint, today if you Google the most common search keywords in search for a place that does what we do in Indianapolis, we come up as the number one result for all 3 of the top 3 keyword phrases.

Recently Vistaprint introduced a new website builder tool that gives a lot more flexibility, which I like a lot. I called customer service and they said I can create a new website on a new domain with the new tool and if I like it, in 30 days, I can just have them apply the old domain name, which has gotten such good results, to the new website created with the new tool. It would take the place of the new domain name.

Here's my question: If I do that, is there anything about this process that might jeopardize the good results we're getting on Google? I'm scared that maybe there's something integrated in the template that we're currently using that's responsible for us getting high placement on Google that might not be present if we created the new site with the new template and then apply the old domain name on top of it.

I'm developing a small discussion board with net/http and go-mysql, and it's been plenty of fun. I wonder if Go is soon going to take over things like ASP.NET because how well it works. What are you guys writing in Go?

    Where to even start?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 02:56 PM PST

    Hi all,

I currently work as an IT support officer and am having absolutely no enjoyment with it whatsoever - it's also something I don't want a career in. Iknow a couple of the more basic languages (HTML, CSS), but really don't know everything I need to build websites for small business - i'm planning on trying to start this so I can develop a portfolio in a couple of months and move into a junior dev role. Can anyone point me in the right direction? What languages/packages should I be using which are gonna get me into a solid position?

What's the best resource to learn intermediate/advanced Git and/or Github?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 10:32 AM PST

I know the basics pretty well, but a few minutes ago I had a'bit of a crisis I managed to MacGruber my way out of. It involved overwriting a file by accident, merge conflicts, etc.

It was a personal project, just a coding blog written in markdown, so nothing that caused any real damage, and the problem was resolved. But I don't want these problems to occur in the future, whether it's happening to me or on the job.

Of course mistakes will happen, and thankfully Git keeps snapshots so you can revert to back before the mistakes occurred. However, this experience has taught me how little I know about all that.

So where can I learn? I know there are some courses on Udemy, I've wishlisted these three, just not sure which one to pick:

I'd like to pick the best of the three (best being most in-depth, but also easiest to understand), but I'm willing to go somewhere else besides Udemy.

And yes, I know the documentation is the best resource, but it's still intimidating for a n00b like me. The documentation does help for things I already know about, but it's overwhelming when it comes to something new.

where can i learn about web security?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:55 PM PST

i'm a newbie just building things to learn more about web development. right now i'm drowning in vanilla js. anyway, i would like to build a building management webapp because i'm annoyed by the way things are done at my part time job. even though it won't ever get used i would like to learn more about web security and how to properly deal with sensitive info.

this app would involve a lot of private information if it ends up as detailed as i want it to be - names, phone numbers, license plates, etc. all linked the unit. i would really appreciate if anyone could give me some advice on what sort of stack or method i could/should use to make something like this. or just classes/websites/ideas i would want to look up/explore on web security i would really appreciate it.

bonus: if i wanted to build this as an local application what language would be best? my work computer is running on windows 7 :(

Am I ready to start learning Bootstrap and JQuery?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 01:48 PM PST

3 weeks in, I feel comfortable with converting a PSD or web mockup from dribbble into vanilla HTML/CSS (as long as it isn't too complex), and I know the basics of Javascript and DOM manipulation. I also have the ability to make a webpage responsive. I feel like I'm ready to learn Bootstrap/JQuery. Am I getting too ahead of myself here or should I just keep practicing some more? I thought this basic stuff would take alot longer for me to learn, lol.

Final Project [Nodes & 3D], What should i use?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:34 PM PST

    Hi r/webdev,

I'm a Computer Science students who needs to complete his final project and i'm kinda overwhelmed about the amount of options available in Web Development (Which is something good but also gets you lost).

My final projects has to be a complete application so i need to develop both the backend and the frontend.

    General Functionality

Cloud (FTP), everything is stored in a private FTP when the user logs into the app all of his projects are there and he can open them. Security measures, tokens, check that the user exist in the database and has a proper license to use it. Sessions, if you reload it should return to where you left it (Persistence). Multiple clients at the same time. Mongo DB Async / sync Maybe payments

I've been a C# developer for about 3 years now and i never really learned JS (a took a few courses at college), however I'm experienced in CSS & HTML as i love to design UIs.

Briefly, my project is a port of other project written in C# and WPF, consinst in an app that has 3-4 screens (steps):

    Screen 1 (Node Editor)

A diagram/visio like application but far more simpler, i have 6 types of nodes, every node has a different representation in the program and different properties (these are not properties of the visual node but the object they represent).

As you can see in this image:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ymakrma2x8l07tw/Nodes.PNG?dl=0

The basic functionality should be :

Zoom & Pan Copy & Paste Undo & Redo Custom Nodes UI A properties panel where you can edit them once a node is selected (or button is clicked) https://www.dropbox.com/s/0c5moiigy1xblmp/Properties.PNG?dl=0 Auto saving / Save to JSON Connection compatibility (For example, Type A cannot connect to Type D) Bezier lines for the connections

It should be able to detect a complete path that exist when A-B-C-D-E-F-G are connected, if there are multiple Type A nodes, it should detect as many complete paths as type A nodes exist.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/oezfvg7xwep25es/Paths.PNG?dl=0

    Screen 2 (Layout Editor)

Simple drawing tool that has a pallet in the center and you add products (for example boxes) in 2D or if possible in 3D.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/i1a79f0338c7iyc/NodeEditor.PNG?dl=0

Tha basic functionality should be :

Add boxes with the height and width that you selected in the first step. Collision detection when a box is moved inside the bounds of another. Multiple layers with different layouts Zoom & Pan Copy & Paste Undo & Redo Rotation Save (Everything, Layers, Boxes, Positions...) Boxes grouping and change of color Possibility of limiting the drag area and only allow boxes inside the bounds of the pallet. Send all the information in JSON format to the API and recieve the best layout for the pallet (You send the kind of box you are using and you recieve how many boxes fit in the pallet, their position and rotation, API written as a C# Web Service but would like to port it to the backend, maybe ¿GraphQL?).

    Screen 3 (Code Editor)

Once you complete the first 2 steps you will send all the information from the Node Editor and the Layout Editor to the API where the core will return the right code for your configuration.

I think this is somehow the simplest screen because i will use Monaco Editor by Microsoft and load the data recieved in JSON format (However i need to implement syntax recognition etc...).

    Screen 4 (Download)

Download the code generated by Code Editor in textfile format.

I've been searching for information for the last month and im incredibly overwhelmed about the amount of frameworks, languages, technologies and libraries.

    So far i found :

    Diagram/Flowcharts/Nodes Libraries

Raphael JS Joint JS Draw2d FabricJS JSPlumb MXGraph D3 Nodes P5 JS GraphicsJS

    3D Library

    ThreeJS

    Code Editor

    Monaco

My main concern is really about how to use libraries in a real project or which one is the best, for example after learning about stacks, i think that i need :

    Backend

    Express Node Mongo DB

    Should i use anything else?

    Frontend

Since i'm experienced in C# people have told to develop the app in Typescript however i dont really know how to interact with it and libraries and how to put everything together.

should i use a frontend framework like Vue (since its learning curve is lower that Angular or React for what ive read) should i stick to vanilla javascript? if i choose vue, how is it works with typescript and other libraries? How do you implement a model (Type A node has this 5 properties, Type B has this 4 properties, compatibilities etc) Do i need to use webpack? How do you structure a WebApp? In C# you have models, views, utilities...

As you can see im really lost but ive been searching and reading a lot, i just need somebody who can point me a few tips or help me understand things.

Thank you so much and i hope you can help me.

Questions regarding creating large number of pages at once

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:08 AM PST

Hi, I have a WordPress website that will use a custom plugin that will take an imported file and then it uses some API to get some data and post (publish) it directly.
so it will auto create posts / pages. I'm planning on using it for a very large data once a time (like 5K), is this a bit too much? would there be any problem with the server and hosting? is there any steps I should take to ensure that the data will be published without a problem?
should I use any " sleep" functions between posts?

    Thank you

    Example

    Language & Framework: C#, ASP.NET

    Industry: Enterprise

    Software type: Warehouse Management Software

    Project length: 6 months

    Inhouse/Saas/Web agency: Saas
