What was your motivation to become a web dev?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 10:11 AM PST

I'm a CS major, honestly, I despise web development, I've never been much into it. I really want to do something related to machine learning, but I live in a country where there are 0 ML jobs, and barely any web development jobs, but since it pays the most and can be done remotely, I'm forced to study it.

I want to know why people enjoy it, why would someone willingly learn it out of passion, what were your reasons to get into this industry?

I don't care about the money as much as I care about creating something that would help people, something I'm proud of. I just don't see how building a website for some new shop or entrepreneur would be interesting. There ought to be creative projects done by web developers that had an impact?

We are a Legal Medicinal Marijuana Looking for a web developer/designer...

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 02:12 PM PST

    Hello Everyone! :):)

We are a legal government approved medicinal marijuana producer and we are looking to start a simple online store. I was thinking about just using WordPress or SquareSpace but unsure which route to take.

I spend 10 hours a day in the garden so I am not tech savvy when it comes to keeping up with upto date web development.

Would anyone be interested in helping us get started?

We can pay money or offer an unlimited amount of Medicine for you in return for helping us out.

I'm really looking forward to hopefully hearing from someone anyone really even if its a No :)

Have a great day everyone and thanks again! Trevor

What can I do to improve my attention to detail?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 01:28 PM PST

I'm a junior front-end developer and I thought my attention to detail was great until I started working as a developer. Things like all my lists not lining up to the top of my footer container that I don't notice and slicing up pixel perfect designs. It must be very frustrating for my senior and I'm really embarrassed about it. Are there any tips you guys can share to improve this? Tips to cross check?

Husband just got his first job offer but we are worried about the background check

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 01:47 PM PST

He just accepted a Front End Developer position at a large company.

He is not from the USA and English is his second language. Schooling is different where he comes from. He put on his resume that he studied culinary arts/hospitality for 4 years when in reality he only studied for one year. He says he put that on his resume because the program he completed was an intense program that was meant to be for 4 years, but he completed it in one. He has all the certificates.

Anyway, none of the people who interviewed him asked him about his schooling, and he told them all that he was self-taught.

However, on the background check it asked for education and so he checked the box that said that he doesn't have any education to report, since his education is not relevant whatsoever to the job he was offered.

We are worried that they might say something about that since he listed culinary school on his resume but not the background check.

    What do you all think?

    Awful experience with NearlyFreeSpeech.net

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 11:30 AM PST

One week ago, I would've been the first to recommend NearlyFreeSpeech (NFS) as a host for very basic websites (such as wordpress with low traffic). For many years, it worked well, the websites loaded fast enough and it was easy to maintain. I even used it for a past-client (I don't really do client work, but this was an acquaintance and wouldn't require too much work). They've been on the service ever since without needing my help for anything.

Fast-forward to last week, they decided they would no longer allow 2 accounts to be used by the same person. Apparently it was in bold on the signup page when I signed up all those years ago, of course I don't remember that's probably on me. However it wasn't a problem for the last 4 years. Now they decided I had to take action within 7 days and sent me links to a couple of support articles about transferring accounts. Note that this was about my client's account which I was no longer paid to manage.

So I read the articles, emailed my acquaintance and choose my plan of action:

    1. Get the client to create their own membership
    2. Transfer the account to that new membership

However my client wouldn't get back to me (and still hasn't). So I emailed NFS to let them know about the situation and asked if it was alright if I just stopped accessing the client's account (I had already deleted all the passwords I had for the account). They didn't even bother to reply to my support request (because NFS doesn't do support, that's why they're so cheap).

Instead, they let the 7 days elapse, decided to apply the $50 fee anyway which put the balance in the negative, effectively pulling the site down.

Furthermore, they forcefully transferred the account to my membership (so my client can no longer access their own account).

We're not done yet, after that, since that new account is in the red, they're saying that they're going to take the money from my own account, delete the data and prevent me from using their service ever again if I don't give them the money within 30 days.

    tl;dr;

    NearlyFreeSpeech...

    1. Gave me and my client whom I haven't talked to in 4 years 7 days to comply to a policy
    2. I wasn't able to get my old client to do anything within those 7 days
    3. NFS put a $50 fee on my client's account, putting it in the red and putting down the website
    4. Stole the client's account on my behalf
    5. Threatens to steal my money to pay for the client's fee
    6. Threatens to delete all my data as well as my client's

I agree that it's on me to follow the policies, but damn they really didn't try too much to help me resolve the issue and went in quick with the shit solution.

If anyone's looking for a cheap hosting solution, I'll point them to http://www.nosupportlinuxhosting.com/ from now on and I'll be recommending my client to go there as well, can't wait to get out of NFS even though it had served me well for so long before that.

Html world map / image map help

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 12:25 PM PST

I'm being tasked to put a world map on our SharePoint site. The world map has 9 regions.

I used an online tool to make an image map with 9 rectangle image map buttons (sorry...I'm completely ignorant to the terminology) for each region. But I don't know how to make those clickable areas link to other pages or other URLS. Could someone help me refine this code? Or give me a good example that I can replace default parts with my URLS? Thanks?

2017 was a massive year for Mozilla. Here are some highlights!

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 04:05 PM PST

Webdevs tend to value Chrome a lot and I feel Mozilla related news usually gets ignored. I tried to frame a picture of what has happened in the past year on this front. Mozilla is not only innovating but it makes people work together on standards.

Questions AutoGeneration of Swagger/ OpenAPI 3.0 docs

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 10:10 AM PST

Hello, I am working on a project where I have been asked to generate some docs. I am looking at my option for generating even the framework (which endpoints have get /post /put /delete methods) or stubs that could be generated with comments within the code base (node.js).

This looks like I can develop the spec and then generate the code: http://mherman.org/blog/2016/05/26/swagger-and-nodejs/#.WnIEWGaZP-Y

I am looking for something to generate from the code. I poked around google, GitHub and atom packages, I didn't see anything obvious. Any suggestions?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 03:19 PM PST

so after checking out FCC and studying most of html and css sides, I've started studying under the course "web development bootcamp" by colt Steele on Udemy. I wish to become front end web developer so I'm planning to just go over the lessons specifically for front end which cover html, css, javascript and jquery. Do you guys have any advice or additional course I should be taking?

Mainly Java dev, want to migrate my Angular 1 site

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 11:55 AM PST

    The backend is Java.

Angular rocketed from version 1 to 5 and looking at the new Angular, it looks like what some React code I've seen, looks like (kind of, too much).

I'm thinking about dumping Angular and just using plain JS for the dynamic parts.

    Sound crazy?
