Entire website got copied, any way to prevent it happening again?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 03:26 PM PST

Hi all, this seems as good a place as any to ask this question. So I recently discovered someone had cloned my entire wordpress based website and attempted to alter it to suit their needs. It was a mess to be honest with broken links everywhere but they had also forgotten to remove half of my content. Photography, blog posts, tutorials all with my logo and name still attached. The only reason I found it was by googling my own name and finding one of my tutorials under a domain I didn't recognise. Thankfully this individual was responsive to my request to remove all my copyrighted material and took down his site (or at the least replaced all the pages with nothing).

So my question is how is it possible to clone an entire site like this and is it possible to prevent it happening again? For all the blog posts to have come through unscathed surely even the database had to be copied in tact? I thought for a moment that somehow he had gotten access to my backup files sitting on the server but these are located in the root above public_html, surely not accessible by anyone? The only thing I thought of doing was preventing indexing in cpanel but I'm not really sure if that had anything to do with it.

Best practices for JavaScript folder structure

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 04:29 AM PST

So, currently I have alot of files in the root folder of my NPM package.
    script.js, script.min.js alongside README.md and package.json, etc.

In what folder would I place script.js (it's not included in the NPM package only on GitHub), I've seen several projects use bin or src.

In what folder would I place script.min.js (this is included in the NPM package) I've seen projects using bin, lib, build, dist or min.

Just looking for the best practices, I'm into adopting StandardJS so I would like to see some best practices.
My guess is that the source file goes into src and the minified production file into build.

How to get customers if you're more back end?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:04 AM PST

So I do full-stack but I am better at the back-end so my website doesn't look 'flashy' in terms of design/looks.

I think customers are put off by this; how can i convey my back-end skills if most of my customers don't even know what that is?

Or should I just invest in a template for the front end?

Anyone know an alternative to initializr?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 04:09 PM PST

I just checked the website today and they said they are retiring it at the end of this year. I mean naturally it's just a boilerplate generator, but I think a JS stack generator would be really useful for aspiring web devs. The author of initializr actually wrote a guide for that, but I still would like to try to find something to automate the process.

What's the best way to create a Wordpress post on mobile?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:46 AM PST

I'm running a self-hosted Wordpress site and I'd like to know... Is there any alternative ways to creating a Wordpress post instead of creating it through the mobile browser?

Are there any work-arounds? Maybe create the post with correct mark-ups through an app (not notes) then paste it on the browser.

    Thanks!

CSS framework, do we really need one?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:33 AM PST

Hey, I heard a lot about CSS frameworks, and in the past I tried to learn Bootstrap but it felt too "limiting" and confusing to me.

I've been writing my own layouts since days of floats and clearfixes, so I know what I'm doing most of the time, and I never felt the need for CSS framework.

With the introcution of flex and now grids, do we really need CSS frameworks such as Bootstrap or Foundation. I mostly use normalize.css and that's about it.

I like to be in full control and control every pixel or my layout. As I mentioned, I've been doing that for years now. Anyhow, playing around with Foundation I found out that its Flex grid is relatively simple to use, and it can get some nice results realtively quickly, but coming from hand-written layouts, using Foundation felt too constaining.

I didn't know how colums would react if I set them to be abosolute, add margins, custom padding and go crazy as I usually do when writing code. Anyhow, I don't need any other elements, I'm just looking for a grid, but with Flex and now Grids, do we really need CSS frameworks?

    TL:DR

    1. Do we need CSS frameworks for grids or is it better to write them by hand or even make a simple grid system/framework of your own?

    2. Are Flex and Grids properties safe to use? As far as I know, Flex works in all modern browsers, and on mobile, starting from Android 4.4, so my guess is that it's safe to use.

Since Foundation and Bootstap are moving away from float layouts, is it finally safe to drop them and switch to Flex or Grids?

A couple questions from someone new(ish)

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:28 AM PST

So I'm recently unemployed from healthcare and looking to make a change to web development (with no money for college). I have web design cert from years ago and experience with C++.

I've started working with The Odin Project to learn front and back end development, set up a virtual box and running Ubuntu on that.

Q1) I'm reading you should strongly use a unix system as a developer, but also seeing now that Windows 10 is a great alternative. What's your opinion and why?

Q2) What would you say are the bare necessities for web development? I've got Ruby on Rails along with sublime text editor and some other modifications from Railsbridge Installfest instructions.

    Thanks all!

How can a site like Reddit have links at the top of a simple Google Search from a fresh post so quickly?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 09:44 PM PST

Talking about those /r/Fitness lengthy posts, or even a simple image on /r/pics ranks so highly on Google just after like 100 upvotes. What do they do differently in SEO that other blog sites fail to do?

[Help] There was a recent link to some courses here that I couldn't save

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 12:31 PM PST

    Hi,

Sorry for asking with a thread but I tried the search function and got nothing.

Not so long ago, this week or the week before this one, somebody posted a thread to the tune of "What course should I watch ?"

Somebody replied directly with a link to the profile of an udemy instructor and there were several free courses.

I bookmarked the link planning to watch them later, but this was on my laptop and I had to unfortunately re-install linux on it and I lost the link like a dumbass because I didn't think to back-it up.

The profile had like 3-4 courses about web development, I'm not sure if they were all free.

If anybody else remembers seeing that kind of short reply going to an udemy profile please post it.

If it helps I recognized the author as Romanian after his name, Radu Something not 100% sure on the Radu but it sounded like a Romanian name to me.

What's the stack you would recommend for a personal blog/portfolio in 2018?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 09:46 AM PST

I have basic knowledge of all things web related but no detailed knowledge outside of Angular 1 (in webdev i guess that's a long time ago...). Now I would like to build myself a personal blog + portfolio site (mostly non webdev projects) and have a few ideas in mind for unique features/modules I would like to include. This is what I thought about:

    • write myself some kind of headless CMS (or build upon an existing one?)
    • use Vue or react for the frontend with the CMS. Will have to learn one of these

I thought doing it this way gives me the most flexibility for my own features but at the same time its a lot of development work to get it right. Slightly worried that by doing it this way I miss out on some of the interesting things static site gens like hugo/jekyll apparently offer, although I am not sure exactly what those would be. Is there some kind of middle ground here?

Guess what I am most concerned about is that I will not use of the nice and fancy modern solutions and miss out on benefits they might offer.

What stack would you choose for a blog in 2017/2018 that offers as much traditional webdev freedom as possible (basically more than installing plugins or adding themes) while also fitting the goal of a fast and light blog/simple site?

    Sports club website advice?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:18 AM PST

I currently maintain a website for a sports league/club. It's completely static and the design is outdated. The site provides a tournament schedule and leaderboard, all of which have dates/numbers hard-coded.

I'd like to improve the site and hopefully make it so someone can help me input/upload the scores. The website is only updated once a month. Eventually, it would be great to get it to a point where members can sign up for tournaments through the website. We're using email now. But for now I'd like to focus on improving the existing functionality.

My thought is I'd need a database to store the members, tournament and scores and then dynamically generate the various pages with the data.

Any advice on which language(s) to use? I've been considering PHP/WordPress. I've been coding for 3+ years, so hopefully picking up a new language shouldn't be a problem. I know there are a lot of options, but I'd like to see if I can use the most appropriate one without going overboard also knowing that I'd like to expand the functionality in the future.

    Thanks.

What benefits have you seen from DevOps?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:09 AM PST

I'm writing an article about the benefits of devops. There are plenty of stats, but I'm wondering what benefits any of you have personally experience from working on a devops team? These benefits could be technical, cultural, or business-related. Thanks for the thoughts!

    Website for a restaurant/bar

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 01:25 AM PST

Hi there. So I'm working on a website for a family business.

The site will only have a few pages: - about - menu - contact - events - booking

    1. For the menu page I want easy access to add, remove and update the menu and prices. Database? Language?

    2. For the events I would like the same as the menu. Add new events, update events, information about the event. Or get the events from Facebook?

    3. People use to book/reserve the venue for special occasions. So I want the user to select a date, then select what time they want to reserve it from and how many hours. Or if they want to book it for the whole day.

I was thinking of using Wordpress or some other kind of cms. But I feel that would be a bit overkill.

The only thing that will require some sort of login is the menu page.

Can someone guide me in the right direction?

Besides languages, what else should someone applying for a Junior position know?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:32 AM PST

Obviously Git and GitHub is important. Knowing some basic terminal commands also helps.

    But what else is there?
I've heard that knowing Gulp/Grunt is important, as well as knowing how to minify. Although I'm not completely sure and wouldn't know where to start looking.

When do I know I'm a web developer?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 08:07 AM PST

Yeah kinda bad title but still.

I'm currently enrolled in the Web Developer Bootcamp by Colt Steele, and I have his follow up course lined up to take after.

Not too far along, finished HTML and working through CSS.

But when do I know I am proficient enough to apply for jobs?

Obviously with college you get the degree and you know you're at least kind of qualified.

I guess I'm just asking what my end goal should be in regards to languages I know and websites I've built.
