How to deal with family asking about your financials? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 11:53 AM PST Hi, I graduated this Fall semester, and am working at a place where I interned and am making very good money compared to my family. I love my family, but my siblings and parents sometimes ask me about my financial situation, and I would feel awkward saying "Well, I make more than you make in your 30's". I feel it could create some resentment in the whole "younger brother is doing better than bigger brother" type way. My brothers don't seem aware the average salary in this field, and I remember him telling me he'd be surprised if I made more than $30k a year out of college. Are there any other people who graduated from a low-income family here who have some advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:47 AM PST I ask this as someone with experience solving questions on Firecode/Leetcode. I saw a solution recently after banging my head to do a 3-Way partition quicksort and I just thought "wow". Is this something I'll get better with with even more practice or are just more inclined to this type of thing?? [link] [comments] |
I believe I successfully threw my life away. What can I do to remedy the damage? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:30 PM PST Had external issues causing me to work full time while attending the school, which eventually lead to me being dropped from the college after three years. While away for a semester I picked myself up, worked on making application with colleagues, external crisis worked itself out, interned at one of Big 4 got a return offer, life was turning up great and I was readmitted back to college to finish the degree with two semesters left to graduate. This next two semester was supposed to be the easy ones, no more lack of hours to sleep, no more full-time/freelance work while going to school, no more eight-hour car ride to visit the family member at the hospital every weekend. Finally, a chance to prove my intellect and get that juicy GPA but, what does this dumbass do? When the pressure got off I wanted one week vacation for myself because summer internship ended three days prior to school starting and my last three years with no break felt like a non-stop sprint. That one-week quickly snowballed into half a semester of secluding myself to just read books without attending lectures/quizzes before the alarm went off. Looking at my final grades for this semester, I didn't make the needed GPA cut to pass the probation set after re-admission by 0.12 (got 2.13 needed 2.25) and am currently waiting for the final verdict from the college to drop me. With one semester left in college, it seems like I have managed to throw everything away pretty nicely... Jesus, I want to kill myself out of shame. There's a lot of people that I owe for being where I am right now and I feel like I threw all their gratitude to the ground along with my life. Currently, my best case scenario is college giving me another chance, achieve 2.9 or higher to graduate next semester, and go work on the return offer full-time job that I signed. Worst case scenario? Get dropped from college permanently with one semester left, lose my full-time offer and be hopelessly overwhelmed with shame with no clue what the hell to do with my life. Man, what have I done :( I had climbed the mountain of hardship last four years and when life finally became downhill for once I kicked myself in the knee and fell down. TL;DR Overcame the mountain called hardships in life and then proceeded by throwing myself in front of a bus. [link] [comments] |
To students/new grads - How many applications do you usually send before you get an offer? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 04:24 PM PST I've send over 200 applications online during December, mainly for internships and entry level with no callbacks or interviews, is this normal for new grads? i already posted my resume here and apparently theres nothing wrong with it. For people that graduated in a non target school, how long did it took you get an offer? [link] [comments] |
Do people in cscareer always have side projects? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 06:30 AM PST Hi, What attracts me about this industry is the skills that you develop as you progress in your career to build things. (I know it's a cliche) and I have this expectations that as I get better I will always be working on some side projects that I can roll out for both commercial and non-commercial use for others. How realistic is this expectation in terms of burn out/time availability etc? Do you see this a lot? [link] [comments] |
Product Management Career Advice Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:16 PM PST Hi CSCareerQuestions, The Ask: So I'm currently an Associate Product Manager at a F100 entertainment/media company. This said company offers a generous tuition reimbursement program (no $ cap) for accredited colleges, but no certification programs. I really enjoy product management and hope to stay in the discipline in the long term, but realize that I'm not as technical as other PMs in the marketplace, since a lot of PMs were devs in a previous role. I'm well aware that PMs in the marketplace are judged on the success of the products they ship at the end of the day, but I want to take advantage of the benefit before I move on. I am seeking advice on potential grad degree programs or certifications that could complement my educational background for a career in technical product management, and most likely entrepreneurship later in life. Educational Background: I have a bachelors biz degree in Operations Management, and don't have any significant experience programming or in CS. I've been out of school 1.5 years working in an Associate PM role. No certifications yet. Requirements: Any program I do would probably have to be online, or part-time based somewhere in New England/New York area. I thought about Georgia Tech's OMSCS but given I don't have experience in a dev role, I probably don't have a shot at getting in. I also thought about getting Scrum Alliance's Certified Scrum Product Owner cert, but I would have to pay out of pocket for that. Any ideas on programs/certs to enhance technical skills for technical product management? [link] [comments] |
How did the 2008 financial crisis affect you and the cs market ? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 06:32 PM PST I was wondering how the crisis affected you ? If I could hear personal stories it would be great ! Did you get layed off ? Any experiences about the the scramble to find a new job ? Did anyone work for the banks ? How was the atmosphere there ? Did anyone work for the Lehman, Countryide etc ? Where certain fields or type of companies more immune to the crash it terms of tech jobs ? I am a new grad, so I wanted to get a sense of how our field reacts when this happens and the experiences you guys have had ? Do you guys have any opinions on when the next down turn could be ? For me, given the tax plan, we should get a few more months or years of the stock market going up, due to the additional profits. Any ideas ? Thanks a lot ! I hope we have an interesting discussion about this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2017 06:25 PM PST Just want to see what your daily routines are like, multiple opinions/ recordings are welcomed. Is it a primarily sit at desk job 8 hours a day and write straight code? Alot of debugging? A lot of meetings to collaborate? Lots of learning and research online how to solve a problem? Differences in work culture/environment in SF Bay Area vs NYC vs SoCal (LA/SD) Posted: 29 Dec 2017 07:05 PM PST I work in the Bay Area in a b2c startup in tech and I'm curious to hear opinions on what the working culture/environment (or life in general) is like in other smaller tech hubs for those who have a comparison, mainly in 1) NYC 2) LA 3) SD. From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong)? - LA/SD is more chill and relaxed, lower density of talent so competition is less fierce to get jobs and working environment is probably more old school? - NYC work environment I'm assuming is probably similar to SF Bay Area? But it seems like most startups there are less tech heavy? Seems like a lot of B2C ecommerce, fashion, publishing...etc type of startups Would love to hear more input for those who have lived and worked in multiple places and outline the pros and cons of each. I'm personally a more laid back kind of guy and want time to work on my side projects. I also value having interests outside of tech e.g. arts and culture so NYC seems appealing to me. How do you even find hundreds of internships to apply to? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 04:45 PM PST People here are always talking about how they applied to 500+ positions before they got an offer. I've applied to 150 but I can't seem to find any more. Going through Glassdoor just gives me the positions I've already to applied to, and I've exhausted intern.supply. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:43 PM PST Recently I saw a post about shortage of programmers and then I hear news about some "big" companies laying off people. Does it have anything to do with the new tax bill? Should potential interns and new grads be worried? [link] [comments] |
Embedded Software Engineer Career Questions Posted: 29 Dec 2017 09:09 AM PST I have seen the term "Embedded Software Engineer" on some job sites. I feel like this is a dream job for me, to be able to write software that I can see working in real-life systems such as avionics, robotics, etc. However, I have read that these lower-level jobs are not very enjoyable due to lack of debugging tools, outdated development environments, etc. Also, I have been studying algorithms at my University and I feel like I wouldn't be able to use that knowledge programming so close to the metal. 2 Questions:
Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2017 10:24 AM PST Hey all, I'm not really your average CS guy, being a bro and whatnot for the most part of my college career, but I've recently began to progress in my career and am currently interning (co-op) as a SWE/Research member. I was wondering if anyone had experience in any of the fields mentioned above or if anyone had knowledge as to what a CS career would be like not with your traditional Big 4-esque companies? I've been trying to get into the financial sector too but I don't have much background knowledge about it (plus ones gotta wear suits all day so lol) but that's also an area that would fit my personality a lot. Thanks for the information guys. [link] [comments] |
Why do you want to be a programmer? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:16 AM PST I'm just curious about peoples' motivations. Is this something you've always wanted, or only discovered recently? Is it the technology that excites you or the problem solving? Or simply the opportunities to work and live abroad? [link] [comments] |
[OFFICIAL] Vote for CSCQ's Best of 2017 Awards! Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:17 AM PST Sorry for the delay on this everyone, holidays nulled out my free time for a bit. We'll do better next year! Probably! As you can see in the voting form, not every category made it. Mostly because they only got one nominee, and also the "Least Sympathetic Failure" category because it ended up as mean-spirited as I feared. Maybe next time I'll figure out a way to make it a bit more gentle in spirit. So anyway, vote! Do it now! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe3riQSltnAONcvfvRDoXJIcDs7g6PtZNhyX6AeYFHeYuKNTw/viewform [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Dec 2017 06:26 AM PST Part of it is the system has lots of legacy code. Whenever I am assigned a feature which builds on old code, I find the old code is copy pasted and the only way to deliver the feature is copy paste and expand. [link] [comments] |
I need info on this new Uni, getting pretty desperate Posted: 29 Dec 2017 06:49 AM PST Deadlines are closing in and I still haven't decided on a University, I'm getting pretty desperate. CODE University caught my eye, but it's really new (2017) so I can't find any reviews, could anyone look at their site and tell me their impressions? https://code.berlin/en/ Advice on other Europe unis would be great too. Greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
Are there CS jobs that are similar to engineering jobs? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 07:17 PM PST Hey guys, Sorry for the vague title. I applied to my university for CS, but it was only during my first semester (which I just finished), that I realized that I think I'd like engineering a lot more, but it's too late to switch without losing a year of school. Just from my limited perspective, it feels like a CS degree would just lead me to designing websites or apps, while engineers build actual things that you can see and touch, like satellites, automobiles, or power plants, and basically build society. Is my view mistaken? And are there CS jobs that are similar in scope/usefulness/coolness as these engineering jobs? [link] [comments] |
When should I start applying for jobs? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:54 PM PST Hi guys, I am on the fence of when to start applying for jobs. I currently have 2 Android projects and 1 JavaFX project and have a good understanding of data structures and algorithms. Along with that I've been learning Swift and Objective-C and am currently working on projects to make myself more rounded. What has made me delay from applying is that I'm a college dropout who has been working on IT for 2 years and I don't know if I even meet the expectations of being a worthy candidate. I'm very tech savvy and a quick learner, I just don't know if I'm stalling for no reason. Feedback would be really appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Anyone find a full time role while still in college? How did you make it happen? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:49 PM PST |
Posted: 29 Dec 2017 08:48 AM PST A junior in college now with a major in Computer Science. I enjoy coding, when I can or when I want to, but I haven't really done much. I can't sit down one day and say hey I want to create an android app because I don't really know much java yet the language I am most comfortable with is Java because atleast I've been through 4 courses on how to use Java in college. I want to be able to create android applications, and maybe even embedded swe... but instead I spend my time playing video games or procrastinating and waiting till the last second to do anything. Thus far, every single interview for a potential internship I have failed. The only reason why I have a web dev internship is because its unpaid + they didn't even care about my technical skills. Concerned that my returned full-time offer will be rescinded due to low GPA Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:55 PM PST Hello all, I interned at a company and they gave me a return offer for the full-time opportunity. I accepted it and the integration process is starting. After this fall semester, my GPA dropped below the requirement by 0.1. While this may seem small, the offer letter does say that the offer is contingent upon the GPA requirement. During my time I received the internship, my GPA was high enough but it dropped after this semester due to personal and academic reasonings. I have emailed the recruiter about this but haven't gotten a response yet. While sitting here pondering, I am wondering if I should start searching for a new entry level job or if anyone else has or know someone who has been in this situation, I would like your intake. Thank you! *Edit: The on-boarding process starts around March and my transcript I send would only have up to my Fall semester at that point. [link] [comments] |
How do you stop over-thinking solutions? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 11:54 AM PST Just about to finish my first year as a dev, and while I have seen tons of improvement in my abilities, I find myself making the same mistake over and over again. I am constantly overthinking problems and coming up with solutions that are more complex than they need to be. I generally come to the simple solution after wasting a ton of time reaching a complex one, and then end up scrapping all my work to put in the simple one. Did anyone else struggle with this when starting out? How did you get past it? [link] [comments] |
