Anyone here done from 'NAND to Tetris'? How long did it take?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 01:59 PM PST

I've wanted to do this course ever since I heard about it. http://www.nand2tetris.org/

I'm on a hiatus from work atm so I have to time to do it. I'm just wondering how long it takes to do? In terms of hours say, roughly. Also I'd love to hear about your experience. Tx.

Additional: I've been a game programmer for years, usually using high level languages like C♯. Not knowing comprehensively how computers work at a low level has not hindered my work at all. But I've always been curious. I'd like to do this course to satisfy my curiosity + as a fun hobby task.

How to use GNU tools to build a compiler pipeline?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:11 PM PST

I would like to build a compiler pipeline using gnu tools (flex, bison, as etc.) to compile ANSI C source code.

In order to keep it simple I am ok using GCC to transform an AST into machine code or to assembly.

I am not sure how to design the total compilation pipeline though. I want to design something like ShivyC only by using gnu tools without actually writing a parser or a lexer by myself.

do cs companies/grad schools prefer degrees from engineering schools or arts/sciences schools?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:34 PM PST

I've applied to a number of CS colleges already, and one thing I've observed is that they have CS programs in both their arts/sciences programs and their engineering programs. Is there a major difference between the two, in terms of which one is valued more, or is the difference trivial?

Looking to get my BS from Japan. Any recommendations?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:21 PM PST

Any recommendations? Something affordable and reputable. I speak Japanese but would rather do it in English. Being able to work at my own pace would be helpful, but if not i I'll negotiate a shorter work week when I renew my contract in March.

Tell me if I'm way off base with my plans. I have a special visa in Japan and can stay here indefinitely. I want to stay and raise my family here with the goal of eventually working from home. I have stable income now, but I don't want to stay in my current city (Osaka) or my current job (English Teacher). I'm getting close to having N2 Japanese which is what most professional settings need, so hopefully Japanese and American clients would both work.

Long term goal is to move somewhere where I can scuba dive and, relax, and work from home on an Southern island somewhere.

    Thank you for any recommendations.

What Can I Do to Prepare for My Senior Project/Thesis?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:34 PM PST

Context: I am starting my fourth semester in January.

I am interested in Tanenbaum–Torvalds debate (monolithic vs. micro kernels), especially with regards to security or speed. However I know nothing about kernels really. What can I do be prepared to write a kernel in a years time? I'm only halfway through my degree but I think if I focus on this subject matter I should be comfortable with the material before I have to do the senior project/thesis.
