Who is the worst developer you have worked with? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 03:16 PM PST What made them so bad? Did they ever improve? I get down on myself sometimes, and hearing these kinds of stories gives me hope that maybe I'm okay after all. I think a lot of people on this sub could use a similar boost of confidence. Posted: 26 Nov 2017 11:12 PM PST I was curious to see how different tech companies hire engineers. It turns out a lot of companies share their interview process and how they hire engineers. Some of them are short, but others actually provide an in-depth look into how they hire and what they look for. There are no detailed interview questions here as it's more about the hiring process. For example, Intercom has two great posts How we hire engineers - part 1 How we hire engineers - part 2 Check out the rest [link] [comments] |
*Insert Bank Name* Technology Analyst- What equivalency does it have to a SWE Internship? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:12 AM PST I recently got an offer as to be a tech analyst. The position is developer. Is anywhere close to a SWE internship? Will it help me get future SWE internships? [link] [comments] |
I'm looking for a job, I was fired from the previous one and my references suck... Posted: 27 Nov 2017 01:36 PM PST I mean my references from this last one, obviously I did good at other jobs so I have good references from those. Basically I have to explain in interviews that I was fired and it's very tricky because the real reason is that it was for bad performance, simple as that. No real possible way to spin it to look better unless I straight up lie, but I've been trying to be honest while making it sound less bad, like saying that I just wasn't a good fit for that particular company and shit like that. Also, while it's true that I was fired because I simply didn't do my job well and there's no way around that, my previous manager, as well as everyone else at that company if you ask me, is fucking delusional, and even though he didn't work with me personally, never talked to me about the issue, and literally ignored me when I asked him how to improve, in his mind I didn't give a fuck about anything and did bad because I couldn't be bothered to try harder, and was a very bad team player, and who knows what the fuck else he thinks about me. So basically if a prospective employer talks to this fucking guy that job is lost. And it's tricky as fuck to handle that. I went ahead and deleted his contact in LinkedIn to make sure they can't do backdoor reference checks that way, because I guess it was super easy to find. Today in an interview the guy was asking a lot of questions about what happened in the previous workplace, and I basically gave him a honest but watered down version of what happened, which probably still looks super bad. So basically that I wasn't a good fit and had a bit of a hard time meeting their expectations of me at that particular position. The interviewer asked who I reported to in my previous job and instead of my actual manager I gave him the name of a mentor that the company assigned that worked with me personally and helped me out. This one is a solid guy and I have a better relationship with him but to be honest there's still a risk he'll give out my manager's contact. However, he doesn't even have a LinkedIn profile so he'd be a bit hard for them to find and contact him I think, unless they find someone else from that company and ask for that guy's contact. So did I handle that properly? Any tips for the next time? How do you think this'll play out? [link] [comments] |
Do non-bigN companies post jobs closer to Spring? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:50 AM PST Looking through the pages for non big-n companies, I don't see too many entry-level jobs, or if they do, they are "5 years experience required". I've also had at least 1 HR person email me back saying that while they liked my experience, they couldn't hire me this far in advanced. Am I wasting my time shotgunning apps right now? What's it like programming in public sector (military or government) vs the private sector? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:39 AM PST I was just curious how things like pay, benefits, stress, work-life balance, etc, are like between the two sectors. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:34 PM PST Please forgive me if I'm all over the place with this giant wall here. This just happened, and I'm still processing. For some background, I was let go from my job as a web programmer in February. While it was technically a termination, it was more amicable than that word implies. Basically, there was no more contract work coming in, and a belief that I couldn't get up on new technologies in time to handle certain "internal revamp" projects they wanted to do. Turned out it really was amicable; my ex-boss gave a good reference to the recruiter I got this job through. I had been out of work, applying and interviewing for 7 months after that, until I got a recruiter through Robert Half and this new job as a result. It was a good job that I shouldn't have fucked up. Close to me (whereas everything else was at least an hour away), with benefits and 60K pay (which isn't that bad for Flint, MI), and what seemed to be not too great a workload (they were mostly just doing stored procedure stuff in SQL). Plus, I had NO money left in my savings when I got hired there. I still managed to mess it up though. Today, I was straight-up fired. The dumb, "what were you thinking" reason? I was sleeping during 2 meetings. One was an informal meeting between multiple departments in the company and another was a new-employee orientation with the CEO there. To be honest, I don't remember actually going to sleep during either of the meetings mentioned. I was a little groggy during the first meeting, and was warned about that from my boss (who wasn't there but heard people say I was sleeping). But I remember being wide awake and alert during the second one; not only was I warned before and not tired, but the CEO was there in the room. I guess it is possible that I fell asleep for a short time during these meetings with no one telling me, but I really don't remember anything other than grogginess in the first. However, I'm choosing to believe them. I fell asleep. I did ask if there was some other reason related to my performance they were letting me go. My boss said it was just the meetings. He also added that from what he did see of what I was able to do with my time there, I was good in the technical aspect. But sleeping during meetings is an understandably huge no-no. They will make contact with the recruiter they worked with to get me the job; the info they give her will tell if there was indeed more they didn't tell me. While I handled myself well and gave cordial goodbyes and wishes of good luck to the team, I am one hair away from crying here. I literally don't have any money besides what I'm getting for my next paycheck (1700). Now I have to enter this job hunt that I despise yet again where it could take months. TL;DR: I was fired today for sleeping during two in-company meetings. While I don't remember sleeping during these meetings, I concede I was groggy during one. I maintain I was wide awake for the other (I was warned before and the CEO was there), but I guess it's possible I did fall asleep and no one told me. I'm choosing to believe them when they say I did fall asleep. There are some big questions I have going forward: 1.) How do I handle this for applications, my resume, and any potential interviews? I was only at the job for a month and a half. If I leave it off my resume, it'll look like I was unemployed for 9+ months. If I put it on, I have to go into an interview and explain what happened the best I can. 2.) I'm expecting a long job hunt here; how can I pick up work that won't make me hate life (like retail) on such short notice? I get paid this Friday, which is $1700. I can live on 1000 a month if my car doesn't screw up. I don't feel I'm good enough to freelance here. 3.) Should I try a different recruiter, or maybe even use several of them at once? I told my recruiter what happened and apologized profusely for messing this opportunity up. She was understanding, saying she will keep me in the loop on anything upcoming and to let me know if I myself find a job I want to apply to, just in case she has some kind of "in" with the company. While she was reassuring, I could hear in her voice that she was understandably shocked and a bit angry. I don't expect to be anywhere near the top of the pile when the next offer comes along. Some extra info: -B.S in Computer Information Systems; graduated 2011. I've had 3 jobs since then, this included. One was 7 months after graduation, and lasted 1.5 years. I was laid off along with others after corporate restructuring. I got the job before my last (detailed above) a year later, and that lasted 2.5 years. My most recent job was 7 months after. -The main reasons I was staying in Flint all this time were lack of funds to move and, more recently, helping care for an aunt that had terminal lung cancer. She has since passed away, and I think I can move on now if a job pays enough for me to relocate on my own. Until then, I still have the lack of funds. I know I fucked this up guys, but I'm scared as shit here and will appreciate any advice you guys give me. I just hope I stay awake for it. [link] [comments] |
How easy is it to get a six figure job with a computer science degree? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:12 PM PST I have a friend who's majoring in computer science. I don't know much since it's not my field, but he's all about STEM degrees and thinks everything else is worthless, and seems to think he can fall ass backwards into a six figure job with nothing but his degree. Is this true. It sounded hokey to me but I admit I don't know much about the field. [link] [comments] |
Feel like I’m too dumb for data science/machine learning Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:14 AM PST I'm a 30-year-old guy, born and raised in the heart of Silicon Valley. I was a pretty good student in high school and, as a result, got into a lot of prestigious undergrad schools (although I think that's largely because I excelled in the SAT IIs). However, I kind of crashed and burned in college. I'm not proud of it. It was a combination of, well…I don't know. Loneliness? Depression? Anxiety? Lack of motivation? Laziness? Lack of discipline? Some combination of those things? I don't know, but I screwed up in college, and at one point, I was placed on probation and at risk of dismissal. I was able to graduate, but then the economy tanked. I worked at an internship for a year and a half or so, and was able to get into a pretty good grad school (again, because I aced my GRE, not because I had a stellar resume or anything). But within weeks of starting grad school, I realized I didn't want to be there. I (and my parents) dragged myself kicking and screaming through grad school, but it was plagued with many of the same problems that plagued my undergrad. I got a software QA job after grad school, but it was just…meaningless. I mean, I hated it, but it was the only job I could get. I fumbled my way through that job for 2.5 years, barely knowing what was going on, until my whole team was laid off last year. I was on the market, but I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I know what degrees I had and I know I had certain skills, but if you asked me for a job title, I wouldn't know what to tell you. I didn't really know what I…do. I applied to a data science boot camp and got in. I was ecstatic, mostly because I thought this would be a chance for me to really reboot my career and point it in an exciting direction. Data science seemed way more interesting to me than the work I had been doing. I finished the program, but struggled to find a relevant job. I was finally able to find a job, but it was similar to that QA job that I hated. In the last few weeks, I've been trying to add to my repertoire of skills/knowledge and do some projects. Specifically, I've been going through the websites for some of the Stanford machine learning courses (CS224n, CS231n, etc.). I'm going through some of the coding assignments and finding myself completely befuddled. I don't know if it's the vague terminology or the fact that you have to think in matrices and vectors, but I'm struggling. My brother, by contrast, was able to breeze through college in 3 years and finish his Masters in just over a year, both at very prestigious universities. Meanwhile, I've been barely able to keep my head above the water. I know that I've fucked up. A lot. I know I can be better. But that feeling is very, very intense right now. Every time I take a peek at the solutions to the code for CS224n, I just feel so…dirty. It's like that feeling I used to get when I was stuck in Final Fantasy X and had to look up the walkthrough, only this is actually important. Anyway, this is just…sort of a rant. I've always wanted something better than what I have now, professionally speaking. And I thought I'd be able to accomplish that - actually get an interesting job that I'm passionate about and good at. But I'm wondering if that's just a pipe dream. It sure feels like that right now. How best can I learn data structures and algorithms on my own as a beginner? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:58 PM PST I've just switched to a computer science major and I'm taking Data Structures right now (and it's going pretty well!). However, it's quickly becoming apparent to me that in order to be competitive for internships I need to really know my data structures + algorithms. Problem is, I won't be able to take an algorithms class until 2019 due to prereqs. I'm also hesitant to jump directly into Leetcode or CTCI without having the proper algorithmic knowledge. I only know a couple of sorting algorithms right now. So, what should I do? Jump directly into reading CLRS from start to finish? The Algorithm Design Manual? Maybe take an online course? I'm very indecisive and need to pick something and run with it. [link] [comments] |
How to politely tell coworkers you don't want to talk without coming off anti-social? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:38 AM PST Hey guys I started a new job at a corporate bank a few months ago. Long story short, I sit next to one guy who just loves to talk. I normally don't want to be rude and hear him out, but he gets very annoying after and I'm afraid to start speaking up because when I do that in the past people seem to take offense (I'm know for being straight forward, a bit blunt at times). I don't want to seem rude, but how do I tell him to shut up for a minute and quit bugging me every 5 seconds while I'm trying to finish a project. He's also a fair bit older than and while not my boss, is a bit higher than me on the unofficial office pecking order. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Mid-Career Programmers in Finance in NYC, what's your compensation? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:10 PM PST I'm looking to get a job programming in the Finance sector in NYC. I have no data points for mid-career programmers in NYC. If I get asked what compensation I'm looking for, I have no idea what is reasonable, what's on the higher-end, or when I am being low-balled. Glassdoor hasn't been helpful. This sub mostly seems to skew to interns and new grads, any mid-level programmers subscribed? Also, if you are comfortable sharing some hard numbers, can you put them in context? e.g. "I make $X, but I'm one of the higher paid employees at my level." And, if you have any advice on which companies to apply to (besides "All of them") I would appreciate it. I have been doing HPC and algorithm work for over 10 years, and programming for 15+, but 0 years in Finance. (Obviously, this account is a throw-away.) [link] [comments] |
Taking a worse job to be closer to family? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:48 PM PST I'm currently having a dilemma in my life where I have to choose between living closer to my immediately family and taking a less exciting job or taking a more lucrative job that would likely be better for my career. Family is very important to me and I'm not going to turn my back on them, but I have a feeling that if I choose the former option I could be setting my career back a lot. I'm going to be a fresh grad soon and I have offers from Big N/Big N equivalents in SF/NYC that sound great and would really help to launch my career. However, my parents are getting older and I feel like it won't be long before they're going to need me around to help take care of them. Unfortunately, they live in a small, boring city in Canada where the tech industry isn't that big so the only jobs I could get there would be mediocre in terms of company reputation and salary. I don't have any brothers or sisters so I can't rely on someone else being there for my parents. From my research, it wouldn't be easy for them to immigrate to the US with me since they're both retired, and the US isn't exactly immigrant friendly as of late. We could, of course, move to a larger city in Canada with better companies/more jobs but I would still much prefer to live/work in NYC or SF rather than Vancouver or Toronto. The salaries are lower and they're not exactly tech hubs like SF/Seattle/NYC are so I won't get to experience and grow to hate the tech culture I hear so much about. Also it's colder up here. This decision could end up determining the fate of my career/life for the next 10+ years as if I choose to stay with my parents I would probably live with them until the end. I realize the majority of r/csq is a lot younger, but does anyone here have experience with making decisions like this? What did you end up doing and how did it work out for you? [link] [comments] |
Good distributed/cloud computing online courses. Do people like Coursera? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 04:24 PM PST I'm a dev with about 6 years of experience. I've kind of drifted around, taking whatever job was available, but I want to specialize and do things more prestigious than just making another business-logic-driven web app. I heard cloud and distributed computing is becoming more and more highly in demand. Any good tutorials out there? I was eying this Coursera course. https://www.coursera.org/specializations/cloud-computing [link] [comments] |
Visiting this sub is making me envious/jealous. However I don't want to miss out on any news either. Posted: 26 Nov 2017 10:37 PM PST 2 months ago, I realized that visiting this sub is only making me jealous. I tried to actively not visit it (unsubscribed as well). It went well until a week ago when I slowly started visiting again (god, this sounds like a drug problem). And now I'm sad/depressed/jealous/envious of all the offers everybody is getting. I don't want to miss out on any news either :( [link] [comments] |
How essential is it to learn Javascript as a dev? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:52 PM PST Doing tons of backend development, and lightly dabbling in front end, I find myself pretty lacking in Javascript. I'm taking the time to learn JS over the holidays and get fully up to speed with it, and just wanted to know how much of a career investment it is to learn it. Or maybe I should learn something else? I'm a automotive sw developer, looking to switch to web development/services career. Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:49 PM PST Love the current job, been working for 4years, brought in lot of topics for team, promoted twice, filed a patent etc. However I am uncomfortable with the way company policies are changing internally, which basically goes against what persuaded me to join the company. Anyhow, I have the next 8-12 months to prepare for a new job. I'm looking at Amazon. What technologies should I be concentrating on? Any courses that are recommended? I have worked with HTML5/CSS, JS, jQuery, PostGreSQL, Django etc. for a few personal projects. Also good grasp on Python, C, Data structures, algorithms etc. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Is this job going to pigeonhole me? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 01:39 PM PST Got offered this internship opportunity at a BigN company in a SWE/Data Engineering team. They basically build internal web apps/tools for data engineers in the same company. They do use web frameworks/languages/methods but also a lot of data tools & libraries like spark for analysis works. Should I turn it down because it's not customer-facing? Will this 'hybrid' exp pigeonhole my career? [link] [comments] |
Received offers for degree and unsure what to do. Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:32 PM PST Hi All, Not sure if this would be the right sub-reddit to post in but maybe you can help guide me. I have been searching for what I really want to do over the past year and think it is with computers. I am a little more than two years out of school, work in the accounting profession (forensic accounting) at one of the Big 4 accounting firms (am a CPA/CFE) but think I would enjoy more work in the technology sector. I have always had a fascination for tech but never really gave it a shot. I applied to two online schools for this upcoming winter and just got heard from both of them. One is an MS in Computer Internet Technology degree (more application based w/ a cyber security concentration) and then the other is a BS in computer science (more technical). Both schools for the entire degrees will cost just shy under 30K. I have to make my mind by the end of this week for one of the schools since they gave me under two weeks to decide. I am kind of unsure as to what I would like to do. I am really fascinated on blockchain and the application of what the technology can do. I have been reading about it in my free time the past month and a half. At work I am trying to see if I can switch into a department more focused on blockchain. On the other hand I am really interested in information security and the protecting those against fraud/cyber attacks. I guess I am just looking for some feedback/advice. Is it necessary to head back to school? Anyone make a switch to a tech field coming from something non technical related? [link] [comments] |
Stressed about how to give my 2 weeks notice with the least amount of problems... Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:31 PM PST Background first, scroll down if you just want the question I am a jr. software developer (mostly doing sql reports it turns out) who started a new job back in July. I thought the position seemed cool enough, but I mostly took the job because my previous contract was suddenly cut short, and I was worried that i wouldn't find something better since it had already been a month of unemployment. However, I have not been happy at the job at all. It is a family-owned IT consulting firm of about 50 employees, and I feel is is very poorly organized with nepotism being the main reason most non-technical people get hired (for example, the bosses children and children's friends work here, and the non-employee wife is the majority owner). The devs are mostly good and outside the circle because they can't just hire random rich kids to do those jobs. But due to many of the people knowing each other outside of work, there is a cult-like atmosphere about the "family" of this company. The culture I 100% don't fit in, since it is largely business analysts from extremely rich families, many who just graduated, and I am a normal middle class gamer dude who is a bit older (28). In the 4 months I have been there, I have not made any friends despite trying my best to socialize at happy hours and trying to participate in office banter. It brought me back to high school with the cool kids table at lunch. I'm not even cool enough to get invited to D&D night with the few developers I could potentially be friendly with. It is just a poor cultural fit, and combined with the open-office, no assigned seating policy, I do not feel comfortable in the office. I also have had problems with my manager being MIA for half of my time here. He will randomly "work from home" without telling me, but not be available on skype or ignore my emails about 50% of the time, and this has been a big problem since he is the only one giving me work, setting requirements, managing my projects, reviewing my code, or being a technical resource to me. Even when I do get him in person, he often seems rushed and uninterested in giving me his full attention and following up with me later in the day. My work has been unfinished or poor quality I feel because half of the time he will change requirements on me that totally change how I would have approached the project to begin with. Or I won't be able to get in touch with him until Friday when I had a road block on Wednesday. I have found that he also just put in his notice (which explains why he has been a shitty manger). Even with him leaving, the person replacing him is in the office even LESS than him, so I am not hopeful for the future, because I feel this is a job that really would require a lot of direct collaboration daily. One or two co-workers have been nice and somewhat helpful, and I feel bad for putting them in a lurch on this project, but that still doesn't make up for bad management and no real friendly connections with people. Also, the work has been kind of limiting, since I didn't want to only do SQL, but web dev in general. And I also don't like consulting, because it is very stressful trying to bill hours when I am not even necessarily completing work or completing it correctly. So, this prompted me to look for a new job at a bigger, more established and organized company, and I was offered a new position that I am excited about, since I made sure to ask how big and collaborative the team is, and how diverse the team is, both of which I am sold on as being an improvement. The question All that is left is to give my notice. However, the problem is that I know it will not go over well with this company. Although from my perspective I have not really been warmly welcomed, the company will act like I am part of their family and am betraying them. I made the mistake of going to their "family party" at the CEOs mansion, and they may even act like it was wrong of me to go to that if I was "Planning on leaving." They will act like so much was invested in me these 4 months. And they will guilt me for leaving my project half-way through its completion, especially when my manager (who carries the other part of it) is leaving too. They will be pissed in general I only worked there for 4 months when they could have hired someone who would have stayed much longer. These people act like working there is like winning the lottery. My main question is, what excuse do I give them for leaving? I do not want to address any of my problems with the company to them, because it is pointless since I'm leaving anyway and it will only piss them off. I could just say that I have found "another opportunity" but that will still piss them off because they are so cult-like about how good the company is that no one will understand. I can't even act like the opportunity is so much better, since I am actually taking a small pay decrease (but it seems better in many other ways). I have thought about straight up lying that my wife found a job out of state, or that my previous employer offered me to return. I am not too concerned even if someone from the company sees me in public after I have quit, since I could just make up an excuse, I just want to avoid making my 2 weeks notice super painful and awkward. Any thoughts from someone who has been in a similar position, on either side of the table? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Nov 2017 03:41 PM PST Hey all. I finished my BS in CS last May and am currently fulfilling a 4-year service obligation as an Infantry officer in the Army. I love my job and plan to happily complete said obligation; however, I do eventually plan to transition back into the civilian world and make use of my degree. Does anyone have any recommendations for resources I should be using/things I could be doing in my off-time to maintain what I learned in school? I've talked with friends of mine who are working in CS and already feel lost when they talk about things they do at work. I appreciate your feedback! [link] [comments] |
Joining Oath/Yahoo as a new grad in 2018? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:27 PM PST I'm considering the Oath Associates Program, which is basically Yahoo APM. I liked the people I met and the opportunity but would people look at my resume negatively with Yahoo? If any of you are hiring managers, how would you view a new grad product manager who's first two years were at Yahoo? I see this as a chance to impact a billion people and that kind of scale is hard to come by, but I don't want to be set back by the reputation. My ultimate goal is to be a pm at Google or Facebook. How much do you make for your mid-year bonus? Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:26 PM PST I see salary and signing bonus mentioned all the time, but never anything about bonuses for performance. What does that typically look like? [link] [comments] |
Internships for post grads? (Canada and US) Posted: 27 Nov 2017 01:24 PM PST I'm American and recently graduated then moved to Toronto to live with my girlfriend. Having only done 1 internship (in Business Intelligence) and am having a tough time competing for even entry-level positions in Software/Full-Stack development. I'm spending all of my free time learning and applying for jobs and have even gotten feedback from recruiters about my lack of multiple internships. How common are internships/co-ops for post grads? Most I see say "must be a student enrolled in a university." Do I still apply regardless of the fact I graduated in may? Is there a list of co-op/internships for post grads somewhere? I'm cool moving back to the states but have been focusing on Toronto area. Thanks [link] [comments] |
