Maintaining a healthy body as a developer

    Posted: 26 Nov 2017 09:23 PM PST

I just wanted to write this post to connect with anyone else who might struggle with this.

For me this is a really big issue. I feel like I am someone who, for most of my life has been in really good shape. But I feel like my body wasn't meant to be that way.

I gain A LOT of weight FAST if I don't work out. And I never really noticed that until after college when I started working as a developer professionally. It always ends up feeling like an either or thing to me. I can spend my nights keeping up on the latest development technologies and then I start to excel at my job or I can go to the gym after work and run after that and be in shape. I can never manage to do both.

I'll go through a few months where I earn a bunch of bonuses for working my ass off at work, but in that same time frame I will gain 25 - 30 lbs and eventually end up really depressed about it.

On the flip side I will spend a few months getting in shape and I do a really good job. Last summer I lost a total of 60lbs. Me and my dad like to take trips to the western United States to climb mountains so I like to get in as good of shape as I can for that. But in that timeframe I feel like I just can't focus at work. I fall behind on projects I would normally excel at.

It's almost like I just can't focus on more than one thing in my life at once and I just don't know what to do about it. I think part of the problem is I get really ADD and I almost feel like, while im good at picking up new concepts and learning things, I need 12 hours to put in the same amount of work most people put in in 8. So it makes it really hard to take care of myself and do good at work at the same time.

I always notice that when I seem to be getting the most bonuses at work is the same time that I am drinking the most. I end up drinking by myself to the point that I'm killing 12 packs a night by myself, but that seems to be when I'm doing my best as a developer.

I know this seems like just a random rant but I just want to know if anyone else ever feels the same way. Or if someone else has found a good way to cope with this.

Am I Dumbing This Down Right?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:29 AM PST

Story (skip to "Issue" if you don't want to read the background):

Trying to explain web hosting to my client with a 3000 product WooCommerce site.

They had GoDaddy Deluxe1 hosting (like $4.99/mo lol) and when I built this new site for them I let them know usually I charge $20/mo for hosting and put people as an add-on domain to my account, but their site was so gigantic that it just wasn't an option so they would need to pay for their own hosting, which means they would need to upgrade immediately.

They upgraded to GoDaddy's Business Prime with 1GB RAM and 1CPU, and the resources kept overloading very quickly due to the size of their site. That hosting was $30/mo.

They then refused to pay anymore out of pocket to get things going so they instead reallocated the $30/mo over to GoDaddy's Pro Managed WP Hosting, which turns out is worse than Business Prime in regards to the resources available because the site crashes everyday now and before it would only crash if aggravated by multiple admins doing heavy database intensive tasks from the dashboard.

Long story short: they are completely fed up with GoDaddy and demanding I do yet another migration to get them away from GoDaddy completely.

My issue is that they have yet to try the plan I suggested to begin with which was the Business Enterprise hosting which has 2 CPUs and 4GB ram and really it was the RAM that was overloading the whole time, but at 1GB RAM it would overload but only when put under a lot of pressure so I think 4GB RAM with an extra CPU is going to be just fine.

    Issue:

My issue is trying to explain to the client that GoDaddy isn't the problem really (rather, we can't say that for sure yet) and they've pretty much set them up for failure so it's not fair to blame them.

My analogy is this, and I want to know if it makes sense for a totally non-web-savvy client:

What they've done is they started with a very small kitchen, with limited cupboard and fridge space (storage), and even more limited counter space (RAM). They have a special web hosting kitchen which only allows you to put things back that you take out and put on the counter when you've completely finished using whatever it is. Therefore, there is a point where the counter is full, and you need to pull out another item, but you cannot because it also requires you put something back but nothing is ready to be put back yet.

What they've done is they asked Contractor A to remodel their current kitchen (deluxe1 hosting), and asked for a specific blueprint (business prime hosting) but didn't tell the contractor they needed more counter space, so upon getting the remodel finished, they realize this isn't going to work still but don't want to pay more so they call Contractor A and say, "hey, this isn't good enough, come back and change it around" but again fail to mention they need extra counter space, so Contractor A comes and works it into a new blueprint free of charge - just because they are trying to be a good contractor, and after that, the client still ends up with a kitchen that has too little counter space.

So instead of going back to Contractor A (goDaddy) and saying, "sorry, we forgot to mention we need extra counter space, how much do we need to pay for that addition now?", they instead say "Fuck Contractor A, they are nothing but worthless, we will do work with Contractor B instead".

But the issue there is that Contractor A never did anything wrong, they just remodeled to the specifications each time, and had someone told them, "whatever you do, make sure we have extra counter space" they would've recommended an overall more expensive remodel right from the start instead of going through the first two remodels.

Does that even make sense? I'm trying to get my client to understand that no matter who the contractor is they are going to need to pay for extra counter space at this time if they want their kitchen to run smoothly and not back up and shut down. What contractor they choose does not matter, and the price for the job will be the same or more with any other contractor.

These people are SO conservative and just fail to understand what it is that their site needs to stay online and I'm really having trouble explaining it to them so I'm trying to come up with a suitable analogy...

Web developer trying to move from small web dev agency to a larger B2C or B2B software company. Any tips for interviewing well and making the transition?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:39 AM PST

I have most of my experience working in web agencies or otherwise "consultant-like" jobs where the company produces different software solutions for different variety of clients. The variety of projects keeps the work interesting for a while but it doesn't really scale well and it also doesn't fit well with certain kinds of app development.

I want to move on from an agency that is only known in local job directories to a company that most people have heard of, or most developers (depending on who is using their software)or most businesses nationwide. I want to help build software that is potentially used by millions, not just implement that software as side work to a specific one user out of those millions.

Some example companies would be Shopify, DropBox or Cloudflare. How do these companies interview web developers? And how do they compare and contrast to web dev interviews for web agencies? What is the best way to transition to those kinds of companies?

What changes will Web Assembly bring?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:53 PM PST

Now that Web Assembly is available in all major browsers, I believe I should start using it where applicable. In which case should it be used? Is it something that will become a standard? How could this affect Front-end developers?

Mind you, I don't know much about it and my questions might sound dumb. Any articles (or anything) that will help me get started with it would be much appreciated.

    Database tables/php question

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:06 PM PST

Lets say I have a multi tenant website that only has 3 pieces of content that changes between each domain. For example lets just say in the header we have a slogan, logo and a phone number that need to change depending on which domain is calling.

Now lets say I store those 3 pieces of information in 1 single table. We'll call the table "header" and have a column for "slogan" , "logo" and "phonenumber".

Would I be better off having another column in that same table to store the domain names and then just use $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] accordingly to pull the proper data? SELECT * FROM header WHERE domain = blah blah blah OR would it be smarter to have a table just for domain names?

After the recent addition of grids to core CSS, does learning a framework's grid system make sense?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:59 AM PST

First of all how different is CSS grid from the solutions provided by Bootstrap like framework? Is using CSS grid with a polyfill the better option? Should I invest sometime getting familiar with Bootstrap's grid system or should I learn a framework that works with CSS grids? Are there any such framework that uses CSS grids instead of a custom one?

What's the best way to catch an expiring domain?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:50 AM PST

There's a domain name I find pretty desirable that came up on freshdrop recently. The link out from there goes to pheenix.com which is a site that catches expiring domains for you, for a (reasonable) fee, no auctions.

I haven't needed to do much domain name auctioning in the past, but I know the rule of thumb is to check to see if it lists on auctions.godaddy.com before even bothering with it. I don't want to type ANYTHING into any site owned by godaddy, so I managed to type some alternative similar names in order to get the domain name I actually want to populate the list. It says "Enter bid of 50,000 usd or more" on godaddy's site.. crap.

Should I even waste my time placing the ~$40 fee down on pheenix in hopes that they can grab it?

Anyone else go through this with a success or failure?

    Thanks

Setting environment variables in Heroku + Create-React-App at build

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:48 PM PST

I have a Heroku app set up as described here. Basically, it runs Express and uses heroku-postbuild to create the static front end.

I have environment variables set up (.env file locally and config variables in Heroku), and it works as I expect for the ones used in Express. But it doesn't work in the React side. I am using the necessary REACT_APP_VARIABLE_NAME convention.

How do I get these variables to work? Thanks!

Chrome localhost Security Changes in Latest Update?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:38 PM PST

I just finally updated my Chrome version (to 62) on OSX and now I get a connection refused to localhost when I have localhost forced to resolve to a different IP via /etc/hosts. It's set up this way for a weird development situation where localhost actually points to my Windows dev machine for a .NET API. If I remove this hosts entry so localhost points to 127.0.0.1 it will load local environments fine.

Going to the IP address of the Windows machine definitely hits the Windows machine, but when the hostname gets rewritten to localhost by IIS and sent back to Chrome it stops working.

localhost loads fine in my other browsers when pointing to a different IP (Safari/FF), and when pointing to 127.0.0.1.

Did Chrome add a security feature lately that would prevent this behavior? How do I disable it?

Server security after initial setup... How to stay safe?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 04:58 AM PST

I see a lot of posts and tutorials about setting a server up, seems like most of them end up saying something like "this gets you most of the way there". What's the rest?

I've never managed a server before. I've got one app in the wild being used on heroku, but that's different than fully controlling my own box.

My context specifically: I'm launching a new web app on heroku, but I'd like to host the marketing site and blog myself. The marketing site is static snd the blog will be on Ghost. So after I setup my vps and go through initial best practices, what else do I need to worry about?

    Which backbone should I use?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 11:59 AM PST

I have a web service that will be talking to a database (not decided yet, go ahead and recommend these too) and the client (obviously). I'm looking for a good balance of security and speed for this web service. There will be a raspberry pi that'll be connected to said server transmitting data to the database.

    Any suggestions are much appreciated!
