To those who are in it mostly for money.. How has your life turned out? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 05:20 AM PST I'm a high school student who's ready to pick a university in a poor country. I love problem solving and maths, while I've also been programming for a while and like it quite a bit. I have a friend who was very passionate with CS and quit his internship in one month, and is now telling me to revalue this career as "The grinding got the best out of him", while I can somewhat see his point as I also can't code for more than a couple hours before I get distracted... On the other hand, I think CS is probably the only career that has the power to allow me to move to a good country.. What do you guys think? What's your story? Thanks a ton. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2017 09:41 AM PST Edit: okay this has nothing to do with Indian/Asian people/White people being better than each other. The only reason I included it was because it is typically the young guys who are kicking my ass at everything and it just so happens that they happen to be indian. I want to assimilate and become friends with them, join their circles, etc and theyre very welcoming and such but the truth is that no matter how hard I try to "fit in" i just have this feeling that i am still an outsider (which i am). Im having a problem coming to terms with my age and the problems that it brings along. I would retire if I could but i have i think around 40 to 50k in total savings. Id also like to mention theres plenty of other people of differnt ethnicities in my work place but the teams i work with is primarily all the smart Asian kids from places like CMU, UCLA, Berkeley, etc. Let me preface this with: I'm an old white guy. Does anyone else feel like an underachiever? There's so many of them creating so many brilliant solutions, always performing past the benchmark while i'm a slow pasty white guy coughing and hacking my way thru the day.I try to blend in, listen to and enjoy the creative, rich, tangy music, try all the elegant variations of multicolored rice dishes they bring to luncheons but no matter how hard I apply myself, I feel like I'm always an outsider.the loneliness and isolationist feeling is killing me on the inside and is impacting my mojo I can't compete with them, i can't fit in with them.I feel I'm robbing my employer blind because let's face it, I'm no true DBA. There's a young fellow that came in last month and whipped up such a fancy solution for a particular normalization problem I've had for weeks, my jaws literally dropped wide open. The older I get, the dumber I become. I just can't do it like I was doing it back in the day. I don't understand all these new technologies these guys are talking about, I don't get the jargon, I can't solve a damn problem without burying my nose deep into a manual for half of the day. I can't work off of watching videos, I'm just dumb. I can't even apply for a new job because all these new people are doing all these Cracking the Interview preprations and what not and I don't know a damn thing about what's going on. Forget about going in front of a whiteboard. That's not gonna happen.I'm just stuck i guess. (I got my bachelors in computer science in 1970. That's prehistoric history for you guys.) Sorry for the rant but it's been a problem that's progressively been getting worse for the last 5 years.but i just wanted to know if anyone else my age felt this way or if its just me. Self-taught developers, how long did it take you to get your first job? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 01:12 PM PST For people who are completely self-taught and do not have any degree related to computer science:

What are some of the best places to live in the US for software engineers with little experience? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 06:59 PM PST I'm currently finishing up a five year MS program for computer science in the midwest. I'd like to experience life a little bit and go out of my comfort zone and move somewhere completely new. What are some great places for junior software engineers? [link] [comments] |
Folks 30+ of age, do you find it more difficult to learn when compared to your 20s? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 06:39 PM PST Excluding other outside factors like family commitment and such. [link] [comments] |
Got a full time software engineering job offer, but now I may not graduate? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 09:31 AM PST I had only 9 credit hours left to finish this semester until I was done with my BSE degree, but due to depression I fell really behind (some days I couldn't get out of bed in the morning to go to class) and I am feeling doubtful about whether or not I will pass one of those classes (3 credit hour class). The problem is that I have a full-time engineering job lined up for after graduation, and they are under the impression that I will be done in a couple of weeks. I have been super stressed, and regret not getting help earlier (my mistake, I should have been more proactive in getting help for mental health). My question is if I do fail that class and don't get my degree this semester, what would happen with that job offer (on one hand I hear the offer is nullified, OTOH I hear that some have worked around it...)? What should I do? Would it be worth speaking with people at school about the depression interfering with course work (I'm kind of scared to bring it up tbh; I don't want them to think I am making things up, especially with the end so close)? I am not even sure what to tell the company that hired me. I am super disappointed in my self. These were all tech electives too... EDIT: I also have another interview set up. I am not sure what to tell them. It was for my dream job too :/ EDIT 2: I was supposed to finish this December [link] [comments] |
What's more prestigious? Front-office analyst at a bulge bracket or SWE at a top tech company? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 05:46 PM PST traditionally, getting into somewhere like Goldman Sachs as a front office IB role means that pretty much every door in finance is open to you and even many doors outside of finance (consulting, MBA, business roles at non-finance companies). since there are top tech companies just like there are top investment banks and I wonder how the two stack up [link] [comments] |
Is it really that bad to stay with the same company more than 1-3 years? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 10:33 AM PST This is in the context of: "if you want to maximize your salary/position/experience, you should switch companies every 1-3 years." That's something I've read on this sub a lot. I'm graduating in May and I got an offer from a company that I really grew to like:
Maybe I drank the kool-aid, maybe I'm just being naïve as a new grad, but I can see myself working here for a while. I know this is thinking super far ahead, but am I really limiting myself if I work at a place like this for 5 years or something? [link] [comments] |
Anyone else notice a sharp increase in confidence after starting their first job? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 05:20 PM PST I think that having to spend every day giving status updates to my boss (as well as cooperating on a team with coworkers) for the past 4 months has made me into a much more confident individual. [link] [comments] |
On a scale from 1-10, how realistically are recruiters portrayed in the Silicon Valley TV show? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 10:33 AM PST This is a clip from YouTube showing what happens to Gilfoyle upon changing his LinkedIn status to "available for hire". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVlEVRKv4is Is this scene remotely accurate? I know it's a humorous hyperbole, but I guess it wouldn't really be funny unless there was some truth to it. If you're an experienced systems architect (like Gilfoyle) looking for a job, is it common to receive gifts like that for merely showing up at interviews? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2017 01:30 PM PST I'm a graduate student with 2.5 years industry experience as data scientist at SAP, I moved to US to pursue masters. I applied for summer internships at Github,Google,Schneider in machine learning. All the technical rounds went fine. The interviewer would say that all the rounds are good and we are interested. However, we re interviewing other candidates as well, we will let you know in sometime. I ended up getting rejected at all the places. Got last reject from Github today which I was very positive about. They didn't give me feedback as well. Not sure what I'm missing. I'm in a clueless position, completely lost. What I could've probably messed up in interview? How can I improve on it. [link] [comments] |
Best questions to ask when deciding to join a startup? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:42 PM PST Hello! I've just received a fairly competitive offer from a startup that focuses in a field that I think would be pretty interesting to work in. Technically, I think the company is sound, but I'm having a hard time evaluating the legitimacy and potential of the company. I'm currently deciding on doing my last summer internship with either a HUGE Big4 company (not in my specialization) or with this 50-person startup in a role related t my specialization. What kinds of questions would be good to ask either one of the startup's technical manager or CEO that will help me evaluate the company's future? I haven't had any startup experience before, so I figured I could ask those in the subreddit that have worked/interned with a startup in the past. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Have career but no degree, have option to get degree Posted: 26 Nov 2017 07:25 AM PST 28/M here, didn't finish my degree because I had a full time offer and was working 60+ hours per week, and honestly I was jaded in my classes for various reasons that aren't relevant. Cut ahead a few years to now, I've got a successful career, when applying had no problem finding a new gig(I'm a bit of a specialist and quite good at what I do). Upon reading my contract, I see that I have enough resources from my company to take 2 classes per semester and this would allow me to actually go back and finish my degree in 2-2.5 years give or take. My question is, does it matter at this point? I consider everything in life as an opportunity cost, and in the time I would be working towards finishing the degree, I could be working on side projects, side 'hustles', or learning new languages(Currently head over heels for Elixir). tl;dr: Have opportunity to get classes paid for to finish degree, not sure if I should pursue this path or work on side hustles. What do? [link] [comments] |
Any average Canadians successfully land an internship in the US? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 12:52 PM PST I'm a Canadian and applied to almost one hundred 2018 summer internships in the US and didn't get a single interview. I am an average student with only 1 local internship under my belt. Is it only possible to get a job in the US by being the best of the best? [link] [comments] |
How do you answer this question: tell me about a time you solved a difficult coding problem? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 12:46 PM PST The answer I've been giving talks about how I had to format JSON on a stream rather than using a library because the files I was working with were too large to avoid timeout on Amazon S3. Not that innovative at all, but it's really the only thing that comes to mind when I think of a time where I felt like I had pulled off something even remotely clever. Recruiters and interviewers are definitely not happy with that answer at all, and I've actually been asked this question in every interview I've had (Google, Microsoft, MongoDB, etc). How would/do you answer this question? I'd like to know the actual details you'd give, rather than saying something like "I talk about some project I worked on during some internship or class". Thank you! [link] [comments] |
I am unsure what jobs would suit me best in the CS world. Posted: 26 Nov 2017 08:15 PM PST Who I am - I am a paramedic , I've been working in EMS for almost 4 years now. I'm also in the military as a medic with a valid confidential security clearance. Where I live - Northeast United States What I am doing - I recently finished the University of Helsinki mood for java. I am now about halfway through The Odin Project. I am looking to make a career switch in the CS world and had not seen any one with a similar situation to mine in this subreddit. I was curious if there were any particular CS jobs in particular that I would be a good candidate for. Any feedback is appreciated and I'm more than open to any suggestions. I apologize for any formatting issues this was posting from mobile. [link] [comments] |
OSU online program vs traditional, in-person program Posted: 26 Nov 2017 08:05 PM PST Hey guys, some background on myself:
At the moment, I have narrowed down my options to 1) OSU's online post-bacc, or 2) my local college's post-bacc/ Master's program. The real main reason I'm considering OSU's online program over my local college is that I can do it in 1.5 years. With the other option, it looks like it would take me about 3 years. So my question is: do you think it is worth having the benefits of a traditional program (career fairs, networking, in-person interactions with professors, students, advisors, etc.) even if getting my CS degree would take considerably longer? Would I be short-sighted to choose the fastest program to get my degree and move on, instead of doing a traditional, in-person program? Any advice is appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
What are some tips for my first on-site ever? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 07:51 PM PST I'm a new grad having my first on-site ever on Thursday. I've done internships, and had plenty of phone intevriews, but never anything on-site at a company. Can you guys share any advice? [link] [comments] |
Did your high school had a good computer programming curriculum? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 10:35 AM PST I've been reading some stories mentioning things like C++ class in high school and that made me go, "C++ in high school?" We didn't even program in Basic. Our Computer Science class in high school was really a touch typing class. Not even because our school was one of the top schools of the city. [link] [comments] |
Am I Ready for an Internship (or an Entry-Level Job)? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 02:46 PM PST Hi all, I've been programming for close to a year now, and I've really been learning a lot, especially in the courses I'm currently taking towards my certificate in programming/web development. I realize I'm nowhere near being a mature software developer or anything like that, but I'm curious as to where I am on the spectrum of learning. To give you a more specific idea of what I know how to do so far, we've just gotten into creating classes (true object-oriented programming) in my C# class and previous to that we were covering structures, enumerators, tokens, and 2D arrays. Besides that, we've just covered tree structures, session variables, cookies, and query strings in my ASP.NET course. I know those are still beginner concepts, but how much so? How much more proficiency do I need until I can get a (hopefully paid) internship or an entry-level job? I still have four courses to go for my certificate, most of which I'll be taking next semester. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Feel like dropping out. Feels impossible to land an internship in my area. Posted: 26 Nov 2017 06:15 PM PST I'm a junior and I just don't see a direction for myself anymore. My school is pretty mediocre and lacks any good opportunities for CS majors. In fact, I have some connections who tried to forward my resume to certain companies and was told they don't hire students from my school. I went to the career fair at my school and it was a waste of time. (only a few companies for looking for CS majors). I know that projects are important, so I made an android app but there no android developer internships at all around where I live. My GPA is above a 3.5, so school work isn't the issue, even though it feels like a waste of time. What are my options going forward? transfer to a new school? Dropout ? I wanna try to keep learning new technologies but school and part time job drains all my energy, and I don't have any project ideas except making a game on unity, which seems pointless as I don't wanna be a game dev. I feel like time is running out in getting some real world experience. [link] [comments] |
Is it hard to get a job with a Visa sponsorship ? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 03:42 PM PST Hello, I have a bachelor in software engineering (I am actually living in europe) and I am interesting in going to work in USA. I have actually 1 year experiment. I would like to know how hard it is to find a job in IT with visa sponsorship ? Do you have suggestion to start my research (website, company, LinkedIN) ? [link] [comments] |
Should I accept a job as Head TA even if it will lower my grades? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 05:47 PM PST I've been offered a job as "Head teaching assistant" in my university's software security course. If I accept, I'll be in charge of the other TAs and I'll hold some lectures for the students. I'll also be assigned to develop a vulnerable web application which the students will penetration test as an assignment for the entire duration of the semester. 175 students. While this may be worth mentioning on my CV, the position is likely to cannibalize on time I need elsewhere. Suppose I drop 0.1 "GPA" on it. Still worth it? How much GPA would you say this is worth sacrificing? (GPA is not a thing where I live, but there's something similar) [link] [comments] |
What online course should I take this summer? Posted: 26 Nov 2017 08:17 AM PST Edit: Not this summer, winter break I just transitioned from Electrical Engineering to Computer Science. I'd say I have an intermediate knowledge of Java with a fairly strong grasp of OOP and recursion, and a very strong grasp of iteration, arrays, etc. All the basics. I had a fantastic intro CS professor who taught us recursion, bubble/selection/insertion sort, and gave us an introduction to data structures with binary trees. All before the actual Data Structures class. I'm completely fascinated by this stuff and can't believe I didn't start in this major freshman year. I want to get a leg up on my classmates and learn something cool over winter break with an online course from a place like Coursera, Udemy, or EdX, and hopefully gain enough knowledge to make a side project.
