    It frikin’ happened!! I got a job!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 09:37 AM PST

    I got it guys! I got a job as a junior front-end developer in a very cool company where they are looking for people like me, to help them grow and become great engineers.

    I'm so thrilled and relieved to be honest. I was so close to giving up. But never give up. Keep pushing. Keep learning. Keep building things (!!!). Small projects, clone projects, just follow someone coding something on youtube, anything, just keep building projects.

    And step up your linkedin game. I can't stress this enough. You basically don't need portfolio website. Make your linkedin nice and tidy. Make your github profile look neat and you're good.

    Reach out to recruiters. To ceo's. To lead developers. Reach out to people on linkedin, be open about your story. Don't sugarcoat it too much. Eventually you will find a match. Someone who will see potential and enthusiasm in you.

    Thank you, you wonderful community. I wouldn't made it without you

    Edit: more than happy to answer any questions you guys have

    Edit2: I'm self-thaught developer. I mostly used TOP and Scrimba to learn JS and React.

    Edit3: To clarify some things:

    • I started full-time studying in October last year. I fully committed to this, spent all my free time and weekends and holidays firkin' learning and building projects.

    • I got an offer after only 4 months. To be honest, I think I got lucky with that. I know it usually takes more time. Just keep going, and it will happen.

    • I used The Odin Project and free courses on Scrimba. In particular this and this course. Other than that, just google things when you're stuck and watch specific yt tutorials on that topic.

    • You need to scan your local job market really good, and see which technologies/frameworks are in demand. Focus on learning them. Could be React, could be Vue, could be Flutter, could be Ruby on Rails. Do the research.

    • I did network like crazy on LinkedIn, and to be honest, I think that's the reason why I was successful with my job search. This video in particular helped me a lot with grasping how much networking is important and how to write a good 'cold message'.

    • Focus on polishing your LinkedIn page and your GitHub page. They are more important than to have a good personal portfolio website. This repo on GitHub gave me a lot of inspiration and how-to with making an attractive homepage on GitHub.

    Looking for someone who is fluent in english. I will help you to learn to program.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 05:22 AM PST

    I am looking for someone who is fluent in english. It is best if you are a native speaker.

    Here are the things that I can do for you: - If you are a beginner, new to programming. I can help you learn: python, R, c, c++, java, bash or javascript. I will help you to understand concepts that you do not know about programming or computer science. If you have problems, or your code has bugs, you do not know what to do, I will always be available for you. - If you are not good at data structure or algorithm, you are solving problems in platform like leetcode.com and you get stuck at some point, or just do not know how to approach the problem. - Data science related topics, and the math behind it. I am fluent with python and R so if you are going to learn python, or just get started with data science with R or Python, It would be really nice because I can help you more. - And more, ... just ask me, if I know, I will definitely try my best to explain it to you.

    What I am looking for from you: You are fluent in english. The reason why I want to do this is because I want to improve my english. Hey, do not get me wrong. I can speak english, but not so excellent. I usually talk to myself but I find it does not help much. So I want you to be fluent in english, so that when I speak to you, if you find that the way I am speaking is not right, not natural or I make some mistakes, you can fix that for me. I am a little bit introvert, sadly. So I hope that you are friendly. And that is all you have to do. Basically, I teach you programming, and you help me to improve my english skills.

    I am confident that you are a beginner, or just get started with programming, you are not good data structure and algorithm, I can help and bring value to you. So if you are interested, please comment or message me directly.

    I genuinely do not understand Javascript functions and don't know how to problem solve through them

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 04:53 AM PST

    I know this is gonna end up more of a vent than anything else but I'm so lost. I'm currently in week 2 of a fullstack bootcamp. It's an interesting setup because my employer is sending me and paying for everything, and then once I finish I can transition to software developer at the company. It's a really sweet opportunity, and meant for people from non-traditional backgrounds to get into tech. Well, I knew I had to prepare myself for the fast pace and normally I'm good with it and knew this was going to be a challenge for me, but I'm so lost and just feel like I'm falling behind every day.

    My instructors are pretty good and helpful, but I feel like I have to ask for help every step of the way so I'm not actually retaining anything. I can do a lot of the basic stuff, but once I get to the harder problems I spend hours on something that should be so simple. I've started looking at outside resources but just can't seem to put what I'm reading/watching into practice. It seems like everyone else is getting this stuff (idk if that's true or just me being insecure and comparing to others haha).

    I've been struggling with functions ever since we started learning them and now we're getting into nested arrays and forEach and map and I don't even know where to start. I understand the point of functions and looping and what they are used for. When it's being explained I understand what is happening. But actually creating my own I just can't solve. For example, a questions like these:

    Create a function named boats that takes in our array of boats, and returns item name and its index number in a formatted string.

    Create a function named addAlphabetically that takes in our array of boats and a new boat type and returns an array of boats with that new item, sorted alphabetically.

    By looking up on substack or other resources I feel like I'm just going deeper down a rabbit hole every time.

    I know this a great opportunity that very few people get so I really don't want to mess it up. I also know spending 10-12 hours on my computer trying to figure out three questions is going to burn me out so I don't know what to do. I guess my question is- does anyone have any ways/resources that really helped them build functions?

    Learn programming by building a game. Here's a game jam you can join, along with a free commercial license to DragonRuby Game Toolkit. Links to Game Jam, Game Engine, friendly Discord Server, and tutorial videos inside.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 04:13 PM PST

    Seriously, No String Attached

    I've been developing professionally for the past 20 years (7 of which as an Indie Game Dev). Programming is one of the most rewarding, creative, and challenging professions out there. Feel free to AMA.

    Nokia Jam 4 starts in 9 days. The challenge is to build a game that's limited to the screen resolution and color palette of the Nokia 3310. These limitations are important because it makes learning to program more approachable (you can't build something too big).

    Free License to DragonRuby Game Toolkit

    You can get your free commercial license of DragonRuby Game Toolkit here.

    If you'd like to try things out before downloading, we have a web-based environment with tutorials that you can work through interactively.

    Running DragonRuby Game Toolkit on Your Computer

    1. Grab a free license, download the game engine, and unzip the zip file (be sure to "Extract All").
    2. Double click dragonruby.exe (Windows), or dragonruby (Mac/Linux) to start up your game.
    3. You'll see a directory called ./mygame. Your code goes in ./mygame/app/main.rb. You can change the code in that file and your game will be updated live (you'll see changes reflected immediately).

    Getting Help

    1. Join the DragonRuby Discord Server. We have an active and incredibly friendly community.
    2. If you have some experience with programming, this Building Tetris From Scratch tutorial will get you up to speed quickly.
    3. If you prefer a written format, we have a Getting Started Tutorial in our docs.

    Nokia Jam

    1. Join the game jam (do it dammit)!
    2. In the DragonRuby directory that you unzipped, go to ./samples/99_genre_lowrez/nokia_3310. Run the sample to see it in action.
    3. Copy the contents of ./samples/99_genre_lowrez/nokia_3310 into the ./mygame directory and you're ready to rock.
    4. This video walks you through the Nokia Sample App step by step.

    Need advice.... am I too old?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:51 AM PST

    Do any of you have advice for starting a programming career? I'm 36 years old and I really want a better life for my family and feel this is my best option but it may be too late. I have no idea where or how to start.

    I've worked physically demanding jobs my whole life but my body won't be able to handle it much longer. I make 30-40k a year depending on hours worked.

    I'm tired of living paycheck to paycheck and want to be able to give my children a better life. If anyone has any advice or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

    Only 19(m) and I’m super excited

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:26 AM PST

    I started coding a couple moths ago and had a lot of fun, it was pretty simple since it was js. But I did what most teenagers do, procrastinate. I started back today deciding I want to have a job as a junior developer by the end of the year. I have a associates degree in Construction management but I've realized it's not for me. Hope this goes well. Will check back at the end of the year.

    New to computer science and want to know where to start? Applying to college in Fall.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:48 AM PST

    *TLDR: Based on the hardware I have what are some of the basics and fundamentals I can dabble with for a complete computer science beginner*

    Hey, so Iam 31 with a high school degree. I have zero actual computer science coding knowledge. My immediate goal is to be well versatile on a variety of computer platforms on a basic fundamental level. A jack of trades with various OS's, and programming languages, a fundamental of all the main systems.

    I havent started any of the free coding resources, tutorial videos, books available online yet. I want some experienced guidance on how to learn, because i don't want to learn this the wrong way and have to unlearn bad habits later on, or is there no bad way to learn the absolute fundamentals? I have no idea, which is why i ask for some informed advice.

    I would like some familiarity with WindowsOS, MacOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Intel and AMD CPUs & GPUs. And which programming languages to start with. Plan on getting a linux dedicated laptop in the future as well. Was thinking of using my Lenovo: Yoga or my Dell: G15 since ik Lenovo and Dell are generally more compatible and friendly with linux than other companies (not sure if the yoga specifically is compatible or well suited for linux) I also want to get a MacBook in the future with an intel processor because I know not everything for the ARM CPU Apple M1 chips are supported.

    Iam also extremely fascinated in how some students pursuing computer science degrees were able to manage using just a chromebook and if anyone can comment on that as well. My chromebook has a bit higher specs than the lower more affordable chromebooks so I hope that helps overcome some hurdles on the ChromeOS usability part.

    Ill be building my first PC (with mid-tier workstation power) soon but for right now I have some laptops to hold me down and Iam not opposed to remote connecting to computer labs through school if they have or 3rd party services for hardware power.

    Also Ill be upgrading any internal RAM & HDD/SSD for the gaming laptops and if possible on the consumer laptops I have.
    (Little background all laptops (with the exception of 1) Ive got on black friday between 2021 and this year 2022 for $50-$250 cheaper than MSRP)

    Hardware: (in order of purchase)
    - HP - (intel-10th gen: i5-1035G1 (1.00 GHz - Max Turbo 3.60GHz) 4-cores) - (RAM: 8GB - SSD: 256GB (bought in 2018 and is my daily beater & browser)

    - HP - 15 Pavillion - (intel-10th gen: i5-10300H (2.50GHz - Max Turbo 3.60GHz) - 4-cores) - (Nvidia dedicated GPU: GTX-1050) - RAM: 8GB - SSD: 256GB

    - Acer: Nitro 5 - (intel-10th gen: i5-10300H (2.50GHz) - (Nvidia dedicated GPU: GTX-1650) - RAM: 8GB - SSD: 256GB

    - MacBook Air (2020) M1 chip (ARM architecture CPU: Apple M1: 7-core (3.2GHz) - RAM: 8GB - SSD: 256GB

    - Acer: Chromebook Spin 713 - (intel-11th gen EVO: i5-1135G7 - EVO) (2.4GHz - Max turbo 4.2GHz) - 4-cores) - RAM: 8GB - SSD: 256GB

    - Dell - G15 - (AMD: Ryzen 7 - 5800H (3.2GHz) - (Nvidia dedicated GPU: RTX-3050 ti) - RAM: 8GB - SSD: 512GB

    - Lenovo: Yoga 6 - 2 in 1 - (AMD: Ryzen 7 - 5700u - (1.8GHz) RAM: 16GB - SSD: 512GB

    Thank you so much for your help in advanced. "Hello, World!" <3

    DAY 2

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 05:54 AM PST

    100daysofcode with C++

    I have already learnt the basic of functions and how it return values.

    I continued to learn the function parameters and arguments.Below is what I have learnt about them.

    -Function parameters are the variables used in function.

    -Parameters is a way to input data to functions to manipulate.

    -Parameters can be defined between the parentheses which are after the function identifiers.

    -Just like normal variable, to define a parameter, a type and an identifier is needed but don't have to or can't initialize as it has its own way to do so.

    -Multiple parameters can be defined by separating comma.

    -Arguments are the values that initialize the function parameters from its caller

    -The argument type of the function caller must match the parameters type of the function

    -Literals can be used as arguments.It is called "passing by value". Variables and function callers that return a value can also be used as arguments.

    Those above are what I have learnt so far.If anything of those is wrong or I miss some important facts ,Please help me to correct it.

    Discord music bot with GUI.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 05:02 AM PST

    Hello guys, I'm a "not-that-advanced" programmer with a little bit of experience and uni education on general IT. I've had an idea for a project (just for fun and to learn something), as you've seen in title it's not that original but I want to put a little twist in it. When I was going through various music bots for discord I found only ones that are either entirely Web based or run in command line. It's understandable, these look to be the most convinient ways of operating such program. However me and some of my friends often "compose" stuff for fun that we never want to publish and we also have some local artists' albums that are not really available in the net in any pleasant quality.

    So I thought it would be cool to write a bot that could access music libraries that we have on our local computers as well as yt (if it's still doable). As a method of making it easier to play something from hard drive and (mainly) to learn how to program windowed apps I'm thinking about giving it some GUI. The best thing to me would be having a full app window with all the functionality running in the background and then a little always on top overlay with just main buttons to display over game windows or something.

    I'd like to ask you what do you think about this excersise project, whether or not it's even doable and if so - what are the technologies I'd like to use for something like this? As for languages - I have experience mainly with c++/c#, python and ts but I'd be willing to learn a new one if it's gonna be advantageous for this. I'm 100% certain if this is possible someone has already done this somewhere on the Internet, but as I said - it's just for fun and my own coding experience.

    C++ // Java?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 12:20 AM PST

    I know you guys get this question a lot, but is there one of the two languages that if I learn first, it makes learning the other a lot easier? What are the two used for?

    I'm planning on learning off of Codecademy, is there any specific way of learning recommendation for these 2 languages?

    For context: Software engg student whose only programming experience is a Python programming course in uni.

    Edit: I'm gonna be learning Java & C++ in university which is why I need to learn those ones specifically!

    How savvy do I have to be in classic algorithms in order to learn ML?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 02:34 AM PST

    I am a beginner programmer. I am learning classic algorithms (greedy, dynamic programming, data structures, etc), and at the same time, I have been poking around in machine learning stuff. I always thought that classic algorithms were the prerequisites of machine learning, and I should master the basics first. However, I have noticed that knowledge of classic algorithms doesn't seem to be very useful when I code programs using machine learning with the help of external libraries.

    So, given that I am already familiar with the syntax of a programming language, how much do I need to know about classical algorithms before I am ready to learn machine learning? Will they be helpful later on when I get to the more "advanced" level of ML, or can I skip those entirely?

    Thank you for your time!

    What Do I Need To Learn To Make Apps That Use The Internet?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:18 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

    Simply put, right now I am learning full stack app development from freecodecamp

    Where do I learn stuff that will teach me to connect my apps to the internet?

    Like have an app that allows multiple people to connect and communicate

    I eventually want to make the following two personal projects and would like some advice on what exactly I would need to learn to make them:

    1. Simple forum website, where posts are saved and people can reply to each other
    2. Simple 1 - 1 live chat application

    Do I need to know operating systems and process management and stuff for these two?

    And are there options where the OS / process stuff is abstracted away?

    Thank you very much!

    Need to know why this piece of code is not showing anything on the console when I hit run

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:20 AM PST

    Hi everyone, I am new to coding. Started learning java a couple of weeks ago. I have written this code for cyclic sort where an unsorted array will have 1 to n elements so the sorted array will satisfy the below condition:

    i = arr[i] -1

    This is my code:

    int i = 0;
    while (i < arr.length){
    if (i != (arr[i] -1)) {
    int temp = arr[i];
    arr[i] = arr[arr[i] - 1];
    arr[arr[i] - 1] = temp;
    }

    else {
    i++;
    }
    }

    for (int j = 0; j < arr.length; j++){
    System.out.print(arr[j] + " ");
    }

    Its simply not working! Please assist.

    Thanks,

    nikhat

    Computer science student, first year, slated to graduate in 2024. What can I do in this short amount of time to set myself up for an interesting, high paying, WLB job post graduation?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 05:31 AM PST

    My first classes started this week and while I'm excited for the journey, the end goal is in sight. At least graduation is in sight.

    I have a previous degree which has allowed me to write off 50% of the credits needed for graduation--sorry, Mech Eng, 2 years is a big deal--. While I'm glad I'll be finishing up soon, I wonder about missed interning and networking opportunities because I don't have many summers.

    My question to strangers of the internet, the almighty Reddit is, what can I do to best set myself up for an interesting--by which I mean working in newer fields like green technology and energy, or even game studios, solving interesting and complex problems--, high paying--I've resolved not to fix the issues of capitalism, but to make enough money that its issues effect me less and less--, and to have that sweet, sweet WLB--because let's be real, we're all monkeys, and monkeys need to socialize and hang out, not grind it out--when I graduate?

    So far I've joined my school's career mentorship program, peer support program, and I'm looking into its green earth initiatives after learning about them from the peer support group. What else can I do to make my two years meaningful?

    What do I learn and where

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 05:13 AM PST

    I'm wanting a career change with the way the world is and want to move away from my current job as a teacher and learn a language.

    The two main reasons are so I can work from home and this is becoming a more in demand job.

    However I don't know what language to learn and where to learn it. I'm wanting to spend this year learning a language or skill abs next year work.

    The biggest thing I am looking for is employability from remote locations. What jobs and languages are in demand and could get me a job quick and easy.

    For reference. My interests include music and music technology. I love recording music and mucking around with gear.

    Anyway any advice would be appreciated
