What determines the hardware an OS can run on? Posted: 05 Oct 2021 08:05 PM PDT I've worked mostly from the applications developer side of things, where the OS is essentially just a virtual machine that makes all hardware appear the same to your app. But what about the other side of the operating system? What makes hardware easier to port an OS to? What OS design patterns make it easier to port the OS? Are there OS features that are sometimes just completely incompatible with some hardware? Is the difficulty of porting an OS more strongly influenced by the OS or by the hardware? [link] [comments] |
Best Novels to Read as a Computer Scientist? Posted: 05 Oct 2021 09:16 PM PDT I have been reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson (thanks Silicon Valley!) and been loving it, what are some other good novels to read that relate to the field? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Oct 2021 01:46 PM PDT I made a mildly rushed list for colleges studying CS. I only put effort into making sure these criteria were met, and by met, I mean sufficient: Ranking in CS, Campus, Campus Food, Safety (for my mother's sake), and whether or not I could get in. Mind you I have a 3.28 GPA (Weighted) and my current SAT score is 1120. Although I earned that score last year in march I am confident I can score a 1300+ in the SAT next week (10/13). I mainly used these three sites for researching colleges, at the most minimal level, which were: naviance.com, google.com (searching up the colleges and going into a couple of forums), and niche.com (which is where I would get the "rankings" if not already from the opinion of other Redditors). I asked oh might Reddit a couple of months back for good cs schools and was given a mighty fine list of schools but the majority were 'reach' schools and I tend to be a little more "realistic".
This post was thrown together very rapidly so please forgive me for not thinking while typing. (FYI: there are other factors to me as a student which I wouldn't mind telling but for the sake of the post I'll leave it to any thoughts or questions) [link] [comments] |
