Feeling lost trying to learn programming with full-time job and family Posted: 26 Sep 2021 02:34 AM PDT Would love to hear other peoples stories and perspectives on how they were able to teach themselves programming, especially if you did it with a family and kids. Currently that is what I'm doing. I work large amounts of overtime as a first responder, and not that we are struggling for money but to help out due to extreme understaffing thanks to the pandemic. I'm working 72hrs a week(12-14 hour shifts) +. On top of that I have a wife at home, 7 week old baby, other daily life duties/chores, and all while trying to learn ios development. I'm trying to get myself out of the public safety sector and into an iOS developer job. While I love helping people for living, the actual job has been very draining. It's been very tough trying to learn and keep up with my online courses that I set out to do. At this point I have been going the self taught route. I've learnt a lot and I'm happy for that, but I also feel like I'm going no where but I'm too tired to work on a new lesson , project, or my app. I feel like I'm stuck in this same spot and will never get out. My motivation is very low and it makes it worse when I'm so tired. Most of the time I've been trying to learn at work in between calls because at home it is even harder with the new baby. How did some of you get through it and would love to hear some advice you may have. Thank you! Edit: I am taken back by all the amazing responses I got on this post. It's very encouraging to hear that similar people are in my situation and are getting through it. Thank you so much to everyone who shares their stories and gave me some very motivating words. It's hard to reply to all of you so I hope this does enough justice. Please feel free to PM if you have questions or are in a similar situation as me. Just to answer some questions I see people ask - While I do not need the overtime specifically the money has been very nice for my family and a great cushion. At this time, I have not been forced to work OT (as we call it mandate) but I am picking up so much to help out my coworkers and community with just short staffing. I will not continue with this , and I know my overall mental health and family are the most important. Hopefully, as I cut hours I will get more time to learn iOS development! [link] [comments] |
Should I learn app development or web development? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 07:30 PM PDT I want to learn coding to make money on Upwork. I am a high schooler and I live in an area where extracurriculars aren't readily available to me. I want to become a software developer, and I think working on Upwork (or any other freelance website) and building projects will help me improve my skills and give a kick to my career. However, I don't know whether I should learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or if I should learn app development (android). With HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, I really hate CSS and with android, android studio runs super slow on my computer and the resources and tutorials online are super confusing. It seems to me that there are more web development jobs on Upwork. Which one should I learn? I don't have one that I am specifically more interested in. TLDR: I don't know whether I should learn app development or web development [link] [comments] |
How stupid can I be? I can't seem to figure this out.. Posted: 26 Sep 2021 03:14 PM PDT Okay, so I feel like the dumbest. Recently, I have been applying to several internships and one the assignments was to create this simple django app that I was so confident I could make. The app is a sweet simple Image uploader with progress bar having the functionality to crop it and rotate it and download the final version. I spent this whole weeknd trying to make it but I just couldn't, why? I don't know... I get stuck going through documentations, whatever I don't understand I Google it and there I drown even more deeper and in the end I feel like dumb who doesn't a know a single thing written. But then, I can't copy paste unless I understand, then it feels like I am a script kitty.... How do I get over this? And I certainly don't know how to approach building a full stack application like this, like everything should be preplanned etc etc. Could you recommend some free tutorial on how to approach building web apps. Any suggestions or resources would mean a lot. Ps. Sorry if this is annoying to read. I don't know maybe I am not good at programming... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2021 02:06 PM PDT I'm taking class and just learning about the DOM. I'm still not 100% sure what it is or how it works, and I have more questions than answers. Can any user get access to the DOM/HTML document (which I understand is the same thing, but in a different language), using DevTools? Can anyone introduce changes to the DOM? Does the owner of a site have the ability to block people from accessing the HTML document or introducing changes to it? Any good tutorial to understand this in a simple way? Thanks [link] [comments] |

Where do I start learning programming? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 11:50 PM PDT So I've been wanting to learn programming for a while now because I've always wanted to be a game developer. I just don't know where to start. What programming language do I start learning? I heard that python is quite good for beginners. What online courses do I take? What books do I read? I just want to know where I can start learning. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
React redirect to HTTPS for dummies (Heroku) Posted: 26 Sep 2021 11:44 PM PDT Hi everyone, I am struggling to force my react application to run on HTTPS. I found many similar responses in StackOverflow and other places, but I fail to understand or make them run blindly. Could someone explain how to force react app to redirect to HTTPS as you would explain it to your grandpa? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

How do you add an <iFrame> from the CSS class of another website? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 11:22 PM PDT Hi Everyone! We're trying to run this to show the Covid numbers on a website homepage (https://tholabiotech.com/ ) but are having a bit of an issue with ads running within the iFrame (Screenshot: https://ibb.co/hCSb3rR )... Is there a way to add an iFrame where the CSS element of the iFramed website is used so that it only shows the numbers section in the left of this screenshot of Screenshot: https://ibb.co/hCSb3rR - From: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus ) Trying to fit the iFrame with CSS is a little problematic with responsiveness [link] [comments] |

Need some direction and I’m totally clueless. Posted: 26 Sep 2021 05:02 PM PDT Hey guys, so I started my job in 2018. I work in property and construction management. Over the course of the few years I've been there I went from not knowing even basic excel formulas to being the "tech savvy" one in the office. I am sure this is not much on the scale of things but I learned how to write query tables and import data to create a really robust dashboard with all the companies visualization. I learned this simply through practice, google, trial and error etc. we use zoho so it's kind of basic program however I enjoy it. The other aspects of my job (dealing with angry tenants/contractors etc) make me miserable but I really enjoy someone asking me to solve a problem with our software and trying to figure it out. I've tied in Rent Manager, QBO, Zoho etc and I've written a few functions but it isn't a practical way for me to get any real understanding of what I'm doing. I just kind of jumped into the whole thing and if I had to redo it I would probably struggle. That being said I'm 34 year old mom with 2 kids and a full time job but I want financial freedom, at least to an extent. I want to be able to compile analytics for companies that need it but I am not sure in the slightest WHAT I need to learn and how or where to learn it. I spend 5 hours doing something and eventually I get lucky and get it right. What is the most sought after skill right now and where do you suggest I learn it? [link] [comments] |
Is it worth learning about binary? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 08:36 AM PDT Are there any useful things you can do if you learn how to count in binary, convert decimal numbers to binary (and vice versa), and learn about binary in general? What are the applications for programmers? Are there any for laypersons? Or is it mostly a nice/cool to know thing? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2021 10:53 PM PDT C# is the first language i am learning, and I am struggling to grasp these concepts. My professor is going at a rapid pace because he assumes everyone has background knowledge. I have my first coding exam over c# on Wednesday. I've considered getting a tutor, but my university does not offer tutoring for this specific class. Any advice? I am not very confident. [link] [comments] |
Just starting Algorithms Illuminated. Posted: 26 Sep 2021 10:20 PM PDT Hey folks, just gonna start my algo journey with the four books of Tim Roughgarden - Algorithms Illuminated. Any of you interested in going through it together? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2021 10:20 PM PDT I started doing a 14 day algo plan on leet code. I know basic python I thought I'll try doing questions myself and watch algorithms tutorial from youtube. However I have to refer to solutions atleast once either for syntax or for time complexity or for logic is this how everyone learns at the beginning? Should I do all tutorials first and then practise? Please.help. [link] [comments] |
Number base conversion in a single line? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 10:13 PM PDT Ive got this assignment and one of the extension questions is writing a function to convert number bases however the question says explicitly that the body of the function must be a single line, I cannot think of what to do. The function must be able to convert any base to any base. The function is: convert(number, base1, base2) and it takes input of strings. What am I missing to be able to do this in a single line of code? [link] [comments] |

Everyone At My High School Seems To Know How To Code Except Me Posted: 26 Sep 2021 09:55 PM PDT I'm trying to learn but geez when you're the only kid without a parent in the tech sector you feel so behind. And every single resource out there seems to assume I know everything about operating systems and computers already. ugh sorry for ranting but I just feel so dang behind. [link] [comments] |

I am confused with learning DBMS Posted: 26 Sep 2021 09:39 PM PDT A few days ago, I got this book on DBMS but it's all theory and doesn't contain much practical stuff. I also learned that SQL syntax differs with each DBMS (MySQL SQL syntax is different from Oracle). Now, I haven't even started learning anything regarding DBMS because of these confusions. Does SQL really differs DBMS to DBMS, how valueable is it to learn the theory of DBMS and lastly which DBMS should I learn? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2021 09:26 PM PDT Hi, I am stuck in this problem for several days. And I just can't get it right. Hope someone can let me know how to do it. Tks [link] [comments] |
