    Advice before starting my PhD

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:30 AM PDT

I will be joining CS PhD at Georgia Tech in Fall 2021. I just finished my undergrad in CSE from IIT Delhi, where I worked on network design and adversarial ml as well as data analysis on cognitive science (neuroscience and psycholinguistics).

I applied for PhD rather hurriedly around the topic of robust machine learning. However, in the past few months, I have realized that it doesn't excite me anymore. It sure interests me but I feel more excited about mathematical modeling of natural systems. In the same vein, I find the theory of dynamical systems to be very interesting.

In particular, I find the modeling of ML models to be a little uninspiring in comparison to let's say, modeling neuronal circuits of the brain.

Is this a common feeling ? I am thinking of doing some projects around dynamical systems during my PhD while putting the adversarial ml (which my liaison advisor selected me for, I guess) on side. I understand that the fields are connected and will be relevant altogether but still slightly afraid of getting swayed on a tangent. Any help will be appreciated. :)

I am trying to understand what file systems are used in data centers, how do they work and how does their performance compare to ext3/4 file system?
