Any Advice for an indie game dev trying to use DAW software

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 12:53 PM PDT

I know that I won't be making the next masterpiece after an hour but I would like to make music and sound effects for my game. I'm trying to create a piece of silent hill-type music and wonder what software I should use, what tutorials/resources I should use, and advice. I've never used DAW software but if it helps I know both guitar and piano and have been editing videos for 4 years.

    Life in Tools Development?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 12:52 PM PDT

    Hey folks,

Something I've been curious about is what a day in the life of a tooling / game-tools developer looks like. This is an area of gamedev that I rarely hear about, and quite honestly... didn't know existed until about a year ago. I have questions like...

    • What sort of projects might they work on?
    • When and where do they fit into the development lifecycle of a game?
    • How are they perceived by other departments/teams?
      • Seen as devs, or more IT vibe... like a helpdesk for devs?

I ask because I'm in the DevOps space, but my impact reaches beyond just the dev pipeline, and at times will bleed into helping improve various tasks. What I love most is writing integrations, CLI's, and generally making life easier for people. It's fun to sit down with someone, review their workflow, identify pain points & constraints... and come up with a way to relieve some of that. I'd love to do more of that kind of work, instead of strictly working on and with the code-base and the infra it runs on. Is my intuition correct that game tooling might reflect that better than my current path?

If anyone has experience in this role or collaborating with them, I'd love to hear about it.

    TIA!

    Visual Scripting Inquiry

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:50 PM PDT

Hello! So I've done a lot of my own research thus far but I am having a lot of trouble deciding on which game engine to use if I plan on doing a visual scripting approach to game development.

So far the top options I'm seeing is UE4, Unity/Bolt, GameMaker Studio, and Construct 3.

I'm someone who has no experience with coding and while I know that's not ideal if you want to develop a game, it's where I am at. I am trying to do some learning on the side but I struggle a lot and am a while away before being able to do a strictly coded game.

Ultimately, my question is which visual scripting software would you recommend for someone with no coding experience? Ability of the engine to do super complex flows is less important to me than being being able to actually understand the engine.

If it helps, my goal is to make a strictly 2D game. Sort of a metroidvania style game. In a perfect world after years of development I'd also hope to be able to release to Nintendo Switch.

Good Tutorials (free or paid, but not overpriced) which walk through how to model, rig, animate and texture a gun for an FPS game?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:38 PM PDT

I'm looking for some kind of beginner-friendly tutorial on how to model, texture, rig and animate realistic guns for an FPS game I'm working on.

The newer version of Blender would be ideal for the modelling/animating/rigging, as I'm not currently keen on the thousands for a subscription to Maya or 3DS (however I may look at investing in them if they are a massive improvement over Blender), and Substance Painter would be preferred for texturing guides.

If anyone could share any tutorials or the such which they know of for this it would be massively appreciated - I'm currently a fair amount through setting up the framework of my game but the big 'speed bump' is the weapon and object models as I have not yet had any experience with those, so I need a thorough and beginner-friendly tutorial that pays attention to every detail, and at least in the earlier phases holds your hand until you get a hang of it.

I'm happy to shell out a bit of money for guides, but ideally nothing above the 70 dollar mark!

    Thanks in advance!

Do games look good on a software engineering resume?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 03:22 PM PDT

Asked this on CSMajors but also wanted to gain some insight from game devs specifically. I'm not sure if I want to pursue game dev as a career, but I am definitely interested in making games as side projects. I am also still a CS student. So do games look good on a resume for regular software engineering jobs?

How to Make Tetris From Scratch: Representing and Drawing Tetris Pieces

Looking for advice from someone experienced with game development as someone with 0 experience

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 02:50 PM PDT

Hey! I'm not trying to recruit anyone or anything, I'm just looking for some honest advice. I have a game idea (nothing grand or ground breaking, just a fun idea I've grown very attached to) but I don't have any experience in game development so I was hoping to see if anyone would be down to talk about if this idea is feasible, if it's actually worth a consideration, and how I would go about teaching myself development (or how I would go about pitching this idea as I feel I'd be more comfortable as a writer anyway). I'd prefer not to talk about my idea SUPER publicly but I'm also not super closed off about it so if anyone is interested feel free to comment or message me!

How to structure a turn based card game like Uno?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 02:46 PM PDT

Hi, I am making a card game that have similar concept to Uno, but I got stuck at how to actually code and structure my game. To be more in detail, my game has an object card that each player has to defense. There will be defense card and attack cards, and there are also effect cards. Im not sure how to implement the effect cards since they are not much alike in general (some do damage, some protect, summons, or even switch hand, take card from opponent like uno....)

I hope I can get some advices. Thank you.

Why Do Mobile Game Developers Keeping Putting "3D" in the game titles?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 02:13 PM PDT

I'm baffled as to why this is still happening...

Why do so many iPhone games, for example, have a game title like "Super Blocks 3D" or "Fighting Ninjas 3D" or whatever? Is it really necessary to have the "3D" in the title with so many games being in 3D now? I doubt the "3D" helps with ASO rankings at all as a keyword that people search for or anything; unless I'm wrong.

Anyone have any insights as to why so many big mobile game publishers keep using "3D" in their game titles?

PlayFab sending/receiving data to server and client

    Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:08 PM PDT

So ive been searching for hours trying to find an answer, but cant find any documentation.

Do we use the basic TCP protocol to send and receive data on our playfab server or does playfab have their own function/s for that? If PlayFab has their own function could someone post the documentation for me, because i cant find anything on it.
