Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:32 AM PDT So finished boot camp a few months ago looking for jobs. Got a message on LinkedIn about a month ago about someone from China looking to use my Upwork account to get clients then we split the pay. I liked that he was upfront but declined. Got some other pyramid scheme one etc. Got another message about freelance opportunity from somebody seemed like the same kind of deal from China but on the small chance it could legit be somebody looking for someone to help with freelance. And I've been getting more desperate for work recently. So wanted to tell this story because of how over the top bad this scam was. So first he asks me to make the meeting room which seemed off because he reached out to me. Then he starts the call off with 5 minutes of him clearly reading off a script off camera. He seemed nervous & uncomfortable. He had a zoom background but I saw a guys shoulder pop through it. Then a minute later literally just see a belly pop through the background and dude scratching it. So this point already over it trying not to laugh. I ask him what libraries and languages he uses. He says PHP & angular. Then I ask for his GitHub he say okay I'll send link. He's typing for like a minute then sends me a link. It has the same first name but the account is in Spanish and has like 6 repositories almost all in python. I ask him if he knows Spanish he says yes pretty confident. I know conversational spanish so I thought why not practice some. So I asked him in Spanish how long he was doing freelance. He gave a confused smile. Then asked him again in Spanish "you know Spanish right?" Then he turned off his camera & muted his mic so ended the call. Reported his LinkedIn cus he obviously just grabbed one real quick with the same name as his. It really felt like it was a parody or a scene in a comedy for how over the top bad it was. It was hilarious but I felt alittle bad for the guy talking to me I felt he just put up for this by the people above him. I feel little dumb for even going through with the meeting but atleast got a story and experience seeing what scammers are doing and a wake up call to not be so desperate. Tldr; had zoom meeting with most-liker-scammer from LinkedIn. Set up meeting on off chance it's legit cus desperate. Was cringe, guy was reading long script, lying, sending other person's GitHub, etc. What did I expect, but atleast it was a story [link] [comments]

How "expensive" are CSS properties in terms of computation? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:42 AM PDT Hi, I'm wondering how much added overheads there are when it comes to assigning CSS properties. One example is the Or, you could store that text by casting it to uppercase and then all you need to do is retrieve said text. How does this work on a lower level? If you assign this property, upon the page rendering, what exactly happens? Does the browser look at every character in this element and subsequently cast it to uppercase, and can this be a blocking operation? If you theoretically load some very large amount of characters into this element, would there be a performance boost if you remove that CSS property and merely retrieve the stored uppercase text? Does CSS ever need to be optimized in terms of computation speed to get those millisecond or microsecond faster page renders? [link] [comments]

What's the best method to make a question bank (quiz) website? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:44 AM PDT I'm asking for a project which will require users to make an account in the frontend and there will be different categories which will contain the questions. It can be multiple choice, it can be drag and order. Upon submitting the answer they can see the correct answer with explanations. I am very new to this and have limited knowledge. But we all start somewhere. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
When does security become a factor? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:54 PM PDT I've started learning some backend dev this week. I've been learning node, express, middleware, ejs, making routes etc. Today I started learning about mongoDB and connecting to it through express. At what point does security become a major consideration? Is there a point where the code I'm writing can create vulnerabilities if not written correctly? [link] [comments]

any advice for avoiding burnout in a post covid market? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:08 AM PDT i think I'm going to burn out soon. can anyone help? I'm a full stack web dev, about 4 years into my career. so far, ive had a very successful career. got in early with a great startup, fun culture of young people. the app itself isnt anything i have a particular passion for but it uses modern software and its not bad. they pay far more than i would expect anywhere else. i am very grateful. i have plenty of money, time off, etc. ive been trying my hardest to remain grateful but I'm struggling. every morning i dread waking up to go sit in my living room for 8 hours. i can't imagine doing this shit for the rest of my life, the solitude weighs heavily, and the only time people contact me is to bitch about code or some other problem they don't understand. i used to feel like i was friends with my coworkers, now they're just words on a screen and ill never even meet half of them. i consider quitting every day, and always end up deciding that it would be stupid to stop making all this money on such an easy job, and it seems better than the alternative given that nearly every opportunity ive seen is now remote i like the money, and feel like a huge bitch for complaining at all in my situation, but i can only bottle it up so much [link] [comments]

Keeping dead sites in portfolio. Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:47 AM PDT Hey. What's you guys' opinion on keeping sites you built which are no longer in use by the client? I feel like it doesn't look good for there not to be an active page for people to see. But if it was good work and your pleased with it, it's not really a dev's fault a business went under or whatever. I dunno thoughts? [link] [comments]

Which email service do you prefer? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:49 PM PDT I am looking around for an email service with a good free plan. Typically for sending emails regularly to a subscription list. I know there's many to chose from, but which do you prefer? [link] [comments]
Web devs, I have some questions... Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:48 PM PDT 1) What is the most wanted web framework in the webdev market? (From your experience) 2) What web framework do you use the most? 3)What web framework or web framework pairs (Front-end + back-end) are the most powerful? 4) if I were to become a webdev, what should i study? 5) which web framework would you recommend to beginner web devs? Recommendations for a headless CMS for a small education institution Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:35 PM PDT There's always one of these posts, but I was hoping to get more targeted suggestion if possible. Background: I run a small design agency that does, among other things, web design/dev. At the moment we do almost exclusively Wordpress stuff, but have been asked to send in a proposal for a redesign for a local community college. By small, I mean less than 1000 students, and only a 10-15 page website at present. Nothing onerous. I wanted to propose a headless static Gatsby/React site as I am just not fond of WP for these kinds of applications. We certainly could, but keeping WP updated can be a hassle. Plus, I figure if we go with a headless/static set up, it gives them flexibility going into the future. With that said, what would be the recommendations for a CMS for this? They don't create a ton of content. Maybe the odd press release or notification for students once or twice a month. The pages generally don't get updated often (every semester or so), so static just makes sense. Their LMS and library are separate applications, so we just need links out. My main requirements would be
There might be other things I am overlooking, and would be quite happy to be set on the right path. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Can I "un-declare" javascript code after removing it from the DOM? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:03 AM PDT I'm working on an ASP.Net Core web app, and I'm using the Metronic admin template. For reasons that are beyond the scope of this post, I had to find a convenient way to convert the template into a single page application. The easiest way I found was to send the outer frame once (menu bars, etc..) and after that, keep updating the content only through ajax (the server checks for a special 'spa' header set in ajax in each request, and it it's present, only the content is sent, not the outer layout). On first glance this worked nicely, I was able to seamlessly navigate between the menus, and my spa.js script was quietly fetching the new content segments from the server and swapping them out in the DOM. Things got a bit more complicated after I started adding js code to each segment. Some js files declare globally accessible constants, or other variables, and this causes a problem: Whenever I load a page for the second time, my console gets filled with 'Identifier [...] has already been declared' errors, even though the DOM containing the actual <script> blocks has been removed, and swapped out for the new one. Is there a way to remove <script> blocks from the DOM, either inline or file reference, in a way so that all the variables are also reset and I don't get redeclaration errors like the one mentioned above? The website must be a SPA, so reloading the page is not an option. (tl;dr of why: the page contains a Twilio phone widget, and in a non-SPA webpage, navigating between the menus would hang up the connection). [link] [comments]

Noob question on email storing and sending emails to subscribers? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:56 AM PDT Hey guys, how do simple websites with few subscribers store their emails and then send them? I have been reading about mailing services but don't quit get them. For example, couldn't I have a way where if a user subscribes, their email is saved on a business outlook email and just send to all contacts from outlook? Or probably use Sql to store and then later copy them into outlook and then send? The emails would probably be less than 5 sent per month. [link] [comments]

Any good resource to learn DOM manipulation and web functionality with javascript? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:18 PM PDT What the title says. I can't find any decent resource to learn DOM manipulation and javascript webdev. I already know all the javascript basics (primitives, casting, conditionals, functions, arrays, objects, loops, etc) but i cannot see how to implement this to webdev. The courses i have tried only focus on those basics or do a very crappy job explaining DOM manipulation, to the point i don't know what the interfaces (is that even the correct name?) really DO or how to truly apply javascript to make websites functional. My javascript knowledge is completely disconnected from webdev so far, and i was learning javascript FOR webdev. I tried https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Document_Object_Model but this is just technical documentation aimed to people that already know it, not a proper way to learn. If wanted to learn DOM manipulation/javascript webdev with this it would take years to make sense of all those technical articles. [link] [comments]
Possible to enable HSTS without having access to the .htaccess/server? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:27 PM PDT I have some of my landing pages built on Pardot/Salesforce. Is there a way I can enable HSTS on it? On my main website I was able to do so by editing the .htaccess file. But I don't have any access to this on Pardot. Thanks [link] [comments] |
