New tool for indie devs - How to price your game?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:37 AM PDT

    Hi all,

We've been working on our new tool for indie developers - giving some insights on how they might price their game.

    https://vginsights.com/indie-tools/game-pricing-tool

    How does it work?

The tool looks at all games on Steam and their prices and allows you to filter them down to a group of c. 30-100 games that are in the same subgenre etc as the game you want to price.

You can then review how these games are priced, how successful they've been based on the pricing etc.

It's not meant to give a definitive answer on pricing. That's impossible. It does however give indies some food (and data) for thought. At the very least, you'll be able to know what your 'competitors' prices are.

    Please give us feedback!

The tool is currenlty accessible for all free accounts. I'd be really appreciative for any feedback you have! :)

It'd also be great to hear what other tools you'd find useful - wishlist converters, sales predictors etc.

We're making this site as a hobby project to support indie devs and your help and support allows us to be more targeted at what we're working on.

    Thank you!

All of business is essentially the same. And your jusy not good at it.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 04:54 AM PDT

Edir: Seems like there's a lot of the people I talked about here 🤔

    Stop.

It's not "I can't sell my game because of saturation" or "people don't appreciate my art style for what it is"

There's one of two reasons your game was a failure.

    1. You didn't spend enough time marketing.

The amount of posts I've read here saying "my game got 12 sales even though I posted to reddit once a week" is incredible. Those same people will then say "you'll never make any money being a indie dev"

You need to be spending just as much time marketing your game and brand as you do developing, if not MORE.

My products I sold were absolute carbon copy shit, nothing special. yet people bought them because my marketing was decent, not even good. Marketing is everything. And without it, you're nothing.

    1. You didn't do research into what the consumer wants. Nobody cares about yourSci fi Manga match 3, 4 dimensional chess game that you're so passionate about. If you want to be a game developer, you need to analyze trends and find a market. It's a business.

To add another point. Why the hell are all of you taking years.to push games, then complain about only making 7k sales? Stop wasting so much time with these grand, massive sub niche games. If you can make 3 to 10k profit on a game in 6 months. Then reinvest the money and knowledge you have from that game into your next. You will exponentially grow as long as you make good business decisions. This scalability is common practice in almost all of business.

Why do all.of you act like indie game development is different from any other type of business? Brand new successful businesses, selling the same product as each other, open every single day. Yet all of you here act like game development is some business anomaly where none of the principles are the same and it's all just "random luck".

But then again, this is some hobbyist programmer from the outside looking in.

Go ahead and give me the downvotes. Just saying, apply business fundamentals to game development, and you will make money.

Does every game developer work in this field because of passion?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:21 AM PDT

Or do some of you treat it as a normal job? I was talking to someone about this, and they said that literally every game dev works in this field because of their own passion for the field.

In very many other fields, you have people working there because it ends up being well paying, comfortable or at least bearable, so I'm interested in hearing about your experiences in this field.

How to make simple game more unique?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:22 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm currently working on simple 2D platformer similar to Doodle Jump. Player is just running away from the acid that raises up in the building. The further from beggining he is, the faster acid raises.

This is well known mechanics, and it suits me. I just want to learn about gamedev process with this game.

But in last few days, I started to think about the game originality and I figured out that I want to make it more original. I had an idea with commenting player's score with some funny message, but I probably wont be able to release it on itch.io due to player's insults.

    Do you have any ideas?

I need information on how to get into the video game art industry

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:21 PM PDT

I want to become an artist (preferably a 2d artist e.g. concept artist) in the video game industry but I currently have 2 issues. I would appreciate if anyone had any information that could help me with those issues.

    • The first issue is that i live in northern Germany and cannot leave this place currently (would be able to after a year or so). The art schools in the place i live in are not suited for the video game industry at all and even if they are, they are pretty lackluster.

    • The second issue is that my budget is not big and traveling to other countries (after roughly 1 year) for good art schools such as Art Center in the US would be extremely difficult, i could maybe only sign up to schools in the EU.

Currently my ideas are along the lines of studying art as best as i can by myself or try to find online courses/ classes.Any recommendations good online classes are greatly appreciated.
If anyone was in the same situation as me and managed to get into art industry successfully and get a job at places like Blizzard, Supergiant games, CD projekt red without going to the big art schools such as FZD or Art Center, i would very much appreciate any piece of advice or help on what to do.

As I said already, currently i'm in a sticky situation where aside from Online courses or local low quality art schools, i cant find any other choice, so information on what i could do further would be very nice.
    Thank you.

    Running Python(interpreter)/C ++(compiler+exe) inside a game

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:18 AM PDT

I was planning to build a point and click sci-fi adventure game for kids. I want use it introduce python to kids and have solve few problems using what they learn. Is it possible to run a compiler/interpreter through a game. If I use Godot, can you tell me what workflow I should follow. I earlier thought of having web based interpreter along side a webGL game. It will break immersion and I really don't wish to do so. Please help me

P.S. I want to be very clear about one thing- I don't want the immersion to break. If the game runs an exe to open an IDE of sorts, then it would affect the immersion. I want the programming to be an in-game experience. Of course, if it's not possible, I am willing to accept the drawback. Thanks

Is it possible to get a job as a programmer only with a portfolio?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:49 PM PDT

Hi, I am 18 and I've been using unity for a while now. I was wondering if I could get hired just with my portfolio. I am currently working on a multi-player rts in unity(btw I'm looking for a 3d artist). I should be able to finish the first version of the game by July. (it would probably take me 2 more weeks to polish it). If properly polished and properly presented in a portfolio do you think I have my chances to get hired despite my age and my lack of professional experience/degree? Here is my web page: mauroabidalcarrer.neocities.org

IT'S pretty rough right now but once the game is finished I'll rewrite it to make more readable.

Creating a PS2 styled game in UE4 or Godot?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:12 AM PDT

I've been developing a game for a couple months now, but I found myself not being able to really get the graphics down in UE4 as everything is so high quality it makes are lower poly models look really bad. I'm haven't developed enough where switching over would put us behind on game development but I'm really struggling getting down the PS2 style on UE4, even though it's an engine I know incredibly well, where Godot I don't know too much about.

Using unity to make a ship battles game in VR. Any advice ?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:11 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm a computer science student who has done many school coding projects so I'm not a beginner.

I want to make a VR game in unity around ship battles during the 16-18th century. But my biggest concern is the 3D models I need for the game. Any advice on it ? Should I learn how to make them ? if so, should I buy some equipment ? How far would it be from AC blackflag graphics If I make them myself ( Since I think it's so difficult to make it like that ), any advice would really be much appreciated,

    thanks !

How many quads/tris does your 3D hair have?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:31 AM PDT

I've finished making my basemesh and I was starting to learn about making hair. But it seems like, even if you model it polygonally, it takes up way too many quads; It can equal or exceed to the amount the reset of the body has if you want it even moderately high detail.

I am under the impression that modeling hair like this is still cheaper than using hair cards. Is that true?

Is is normal for it to take so much? It almost doesn't seem worth it but it is necessary.

The kind of hair I'm trying to model.

Amateur question from an amateur game dev

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:33 AM PDT

So, I have an idea in mind and i am willing to put in the hours into bringing the idea into reality but I have a question. How do I market it during development, on launch day, and after launch? How do I make this game succeed? How difficult would it be to probably make like 10K $ or something like that from it?

I am not a complete noob at game dev btw. I know UE4 (now learning UE5) pretty well cos I make a lot of 3D films and on the side, do some game dev from tutorials.

    Any advice?

No motivation, No talent, No skills. need advice

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:18 AM PDT

I'm currently studying IT, specializing in animation and game development. I only chose this because I literally have nothing else to choose. I've been playing games ever since I was a kid and that was the sole purpose of why I chose this career to study (my love for games). I'm just asking for advice from actual game developers which is you guys if this is a bad idea and I should change course right now or double down. I'm good with art, I think I did alright with programming but I definitely don't find myself enjoying coding, I don't think I'm capable of making music, the only thing I have is what make games fun while having a good narrative.

Can you be a game developer without being a gamer?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:19 PM PDT

I just got fascinated with the concept of game development that requires concepts of both physics and programming. I am not a typical gamer playing games and I haven't played games of all genres. The games I rarely play are either simulation or FPS

So can a guy like me with no interest in playing games all day become a game developer?

Where can I pay to get a proof of concept made for me?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:01 PM PDT

If this is completely wrong for this group my apologies. I am so far removed from development (my last production C# program was built in MS Visual Studio 2005) I am having difficulty getting started. If I want a simple Unity 3D program made for me that will let me see how this environment functions where would I go to find a developer?

Which License to Request An Asset Creator to Use?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:12 PM PDT

Hi! Currently there is a person I found who sells animations/assets on both Unreal store and his own personal store. My concern for his personal store is that he does not include a license of any type, just the raw files, which Ik could potentially cause issues down the road, and thats where I want to buy the assets.

I've talked to him, he seems really nice. I just assume he didn't even consider a license.

    My question to you is.

    1. Which license do I recommend he sell his assets with, especially with commercial use? (I think its CC BY? Ik itll be his choice in the end, but just in case)
    2. If he currently just "sells" his assets, where does he need to put the license? Is a file part of the assets, or is it an explicit message on his homepage? How will he communicate the license to the consumer?
    3. How do I communicate this to him? Do I just say "hey do you think you could include xyz license with your assets?" or is there some type of form he's gotta fill out?
    4. Is there any private stores you know about that have a model/framework that show how they display their license? ex. a private store that already uses/displays their license (I want to make the process as streamlined as possible for him)

Anything extra I should know about communicating the idea of a license to him/extra bits are super welcome. Just want to make the path as non legal infringing as possible, and super easy for him to implement. Thank you for your time!

    Pitch deck and IP protection

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 06:45 AM PDT

    Hello!

We are completing a video game prototype in small team.

Almost every publisher has a form on the site where you can write everything (genre, platform, USP, story and just send a video or playable prototype)

According to our lawyer, it is inappropriate for us to start negotiations without signing the basic NDA, because intellectual property is our only property.

Many lawyers who deal with IP law recommend that you do not show everything in the pitch deck. :)

But I have to say more than that, it's a "Commandos" RTT game that avoids WW II. theme. I definitely need to describe the characters and their exceptional abilities, outline the mission and story that connects them, the antagonists and their motives for action.

So should i send instructions to make a game and wait?
