    Ripped Assets from Popular Games

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 06:16 AM PDT

Hey guys I have come across a person on instagram and he is selling some ripped assets from popular games like CoD Black Ops , Bioshock

I just wanted to know that if someone uses these in his/her game what would happen and if the developer changed the color and chaged some design so what would happen?

Are any other game developers out there gearing up for Steam Next Fest?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 02:25 AM PDT

I have just finished putting a few final touches on a new demo trailer. The rest of the team is making sure the actual demo is 100% ready. ;D

I have never participated in a Steam Festival before. Are there any good tips or experiences that anyone could share with me?

Oh, and do not hesitate to share your game below. I would love to see what people are working on.

Any Multiplayer Photon alternative for C++ (no engine)?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:23 AM PDT

That's what I asked in the title. But before anything: what I like about Photon Engine is that they host the server side for you so you don't have to worry about that (and also handles matchmaking and so on).

Despiste the fact that their Unity alternative (PUN) is easy to use, I found the C++ SDK extremely annoying and verbose to use. Documentation is weird as well, but enough regrets, is there another solution? Or even a wrapper to their weird C++ SDK.

Unity 2D Input System not responding to inputs

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:17 AM PDT

I'm using the new Input System class. I'm following the same steps I did in a previous project, and it worked then but is no longer working here. I have the player input controls with a movement called "Move" which takes a 2D Composite for a Vector2 value. I attached that to the player object, and on the same player object I have a script which contains an OnMove method. Actual movement aside, it doesn't even seem to be running that method at all. (The debug log statement at the top is never passed). What else might I be missing?

Pyramid Rush and my own story

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 05:27 AM PDT

Pyramid Rush- is diverse puzzle-platformer, that constantly breaks the fourth wall. Resolve physics-based puzzles, go through challenging platformer levels and beat bosses! This game was intended to be a simple "Indiana Jones" rip-off, but something went wrong and it is YOUR mission to fix the game!

This game went with me through getting jobs, university, getting kicked out from them, through many people, who gave me advices on it, but this March I though like, it's time to start being more serious in my life, to finish something. So after 3 month of polishing, it's finally available for wishlisting in steam.

But for those of you, who wants to hear the story of it, it is written down below:

Well, first of all, my name is Nestor, I am 18 y.o. and live in Kiev, Ukraine

I remember, when I was four, I played my first computer game and this was whole new world for me, I would spend day completing the same game again and again. I used to dream how I would create my own game, think about all the details, but I never thought I would actually do it. Nevertheless, here I am, putting out my first real game to the public.

My game dev story started around 5 years ago, when I was 13. I tried making simple asset flips, but was unsuccessful even with that. So I started watching some simple videos, like "How to make a game in Unity in 5 minutes" and repeated them step after step. Yeah, I had huge breaks and never finished my projects, but this thought of. making my own games would always come to my mind.

To be honest, I never properly learned programming, I just watched how everyone else did it on videos, understood how it works, what words are used and now I do it completely myself :D

Yet, I never took my gamedev dream seriously, I have always perceived it as a hobby. So when I was graduating school (I was 17), I wanted to just keep on working on my job, but then I got kicked out. I gathered all my money resources, tried myself in making some kind of business and completely failed. So, after I failed my plan B, I went directly to plan C, the one I did not want to come to. Getting to a university, I just hate studying, I enjoy everything myself, while doing it, while making mistakes. So got to a Polish uni (I am from Ukraine) and lived in a dormitory. I found amazing friends there. They were all so fun, supportie, understanding, but the problem was that I were too irresponsible. I just partied for half a year almost without any breaks and got kicked out.

I came back to Ukraine in awful depression. I have very few friend here, I miss my old friends, no money, no aim. Tried applying to a job, it was a scam.

But then I thought… What am I doing with my life, it's time to grow up, to be more responsible. All my life problems came from the fact that I were too lazy to finish anything I started. I remembered, I have a dream to make games and an unfinished project. This was a sign, this is my chance to rehabilitate, to make something out of myself.

So I reopened my old unity project and started working on it. I also work as a copywriter, so that I can spend some money on the game and myself.

So after some extra work, I sent my game to about 60 publishers. Everyone declined my offer, except one. But some time later, after doing some research, I decided to do publishing on my own. So I did some final touches to the game, ordered an art for game cover, found a musician and published "Pyramid Rush" to Steam. This was like a dream comes true. To see my own game on Steam. But this is just a first step, half a year of hard work is ahead, but I am ready for what waits ahead.

I am going to Game Dev con "Games Gathering" this July to show my game to real people for the first time, I'm so nervous :D I've never been to any event like this, any advice please? ;)

If you are still here, thank you for reading my little story ;D I have never written anything like that...

If you wish to support me, just add "Pyramid Rush" to your wishlist!

Is learning how to code important for a game dev?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 06:57 AM PDT

I'm dipping my toes into the world of game development and want to challenge myself by making a 2D platformer. I've looked at some skillshare tutorials for this and found one that requires no coding. This is appealing to me as I have no coding knowledge, but if learning how to code is important for game devs it may be better to start learning that now.

In search of a game engine

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:27 AM PDT

Hi everyone, you know a game engine with 3D support that can be used without ANY programming knowledge and without learning NOTHING just like gdevelop. But some of you will tell me try Buildbox, no because the free version offers too few plans, and coppercube is too limited, unity, unreal are too difficult. Do you know a different one?

Why are art-based, experimental, solo games so hard to promote? A cry from the void.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 04:29 AM PDT

    Hello fellow game devs.

I'm actually struggling to make my game get some attention on Kickstarter. I even paid a bit to make some Facebook and Reddit ads, to try if it would change something. But all I get here, are some sarcasms.

    Here's the situation :

I'm a solo self made developer, originally a composer/sound designer, that used to work in a small team before the Covid. We made a few short PC games, one being very well reviewed on Steam (but only with just a few more than 100 reviews).

Last year, I started to work on a solo project that is an electronic music album playable as a game.

I thought that it was a really good idea and I still think that I'm making it well.

Concerning my personal situation, I'm working on it part time since September. I have kids and working from home. I try to get some income from teaching and making institutional/artistic games for art galeries.

Fact is that I can't do everything myself with be the best quality, especially promotional visuals. Also my game being very audio oriented and sensations focused, I find it very very difficult to share the feel of the game on diverse networks. My promotion is failing and it's hard to swallow. And I don't have enough revenues to pay for outsourcing of visuals and/or marketing help.

I think that my game is kind of unique, and my playtesters are loving it. But I have the feeling that most of players/clients have their comfort zone, meaning that if they don't recognise familiar game systems or visuals, they are not interested, and too often, sarcastic about this weird and experimental project, that crosses the two worlds of Music and Games.

I'm starting to be a bit depressed about the situation as I believe that my game and I have something to say. I am working like a craftsman, I would even dare saying like an artist, but I feel that nobody gives a shit about this and have a very commercial relation to games opposed to a cultural relation with them. That only gameplay and usual systems, or very impressive technologies and visuals, are getting the spotlight.

I have the feeling that the game medium has the maturity to become artistic oriented, more experimental but most of the public does not have this maturity, and this is killing me.

What are your thoughts on craftsman and artists work in video games? How and where should I promote my work to get a bit more attention, and have a chance to succeed my kickstarter campaign?

Finally, do you believe that experimental/artistic games could win a bit more attention in the future? If there will be enough public for them to let their creators live of a decent income?

    Thank you for reading me.

    A lot!

How do you make a game from scratch?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 04:26 AM PDT

this is my first reddit post so lemme know if i did anything wrong :)

I've been feverishly scouring the internet on how to make a game for the past few days and all i've been getting is tutorials on how to make a game with unity and such. i dont want to use unity. heck, i dont even care that much about having a fun, playable game, i just want to make one to see how they're made, and make one by myself as i want to get better at programming, but all i keep getting is how to make games with unity or scratch. i just want some article or short video that outlines what i'll need and a couple resources to point me in the right direction. im using javascript to make the game as that's what im most comfortable with but any language is fine for me i can just translate.
    pls send help thanks :(

When do you go for the "dream" project?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2021 08:03 AM PDT

I did a game jam late last year and it made me realise that I wasn't ready to go for the big, "dream" project so I challenged myself to make 6 smaller games this year as practise.

The thing is, although they are considerably smaller, all the elements that are in the big project are still there. In the current one, there's still a lot of UI work, inventories, crafting, AI etc.

So, for my fellow devs out there, how did you know when it was time stop with the practise projects and go for the big one?
