    Would someone please be able to tell me how to save and load xaml objects using the xaml writer and reader. Some coded examples would be great, i've tried doing this myself but have not had any luck.

    Are the ranges of valuation functions in denotational semantics syntactic or domain-related?

    On p877 of http://www.worldcolleges.info/sites/default/files/aaby.pdf, "Figure N.7: Denotational semantics for Simple" is bit confusing to me.

    Where are the domains T and Z, and their elements tau and zeta used in the valuation functions C and E?

    Is the range of sigma really the syntactic "Numeral", instead of the domains T and Z?

    Is the range of valuation function E really the syntactic "(N union T)", instead of the domains T and Z?

    What are some interesting computer science research areas today that could have a tangible impact on the world?

    Hi all,

    I would like to get involved in computer science research soon, and would like some advice/perspective in choosing an area to specialize in.

    I have two criteria for a prospective research area:

    • The problems are challenging and interesting.
    • The problems being solved have a tangible impact on people, i.e., they address a real human need.

    At the moment, my passion lies in distributed systems, and while it fits the first criteria, it seems like a lot of the problems being solved today are around beating the CAP theorem or coming up with a new consensus algorithm, or a new fancy database, something similar.

    While these are definitely interesting and challenging, I'm finding it harder to convince myself that solving these problems will provide any great benefit to people outside computer science that care about these things, beyond what we already have today. I also have this challenge with the field of Programming Language Theory.

    Now, it could be that I'm just lacking perspective and missing why these fields can be beneficial, so I'd definitely appreciate some perspective here.

    But also, what other computer science fields have active research going into solutions that could help tackle things like diseases, poverty, inequality, etc.? I'm aware that ML/AI is one, but I'm curious about what other fields I should be looking into.
