Here’s how many hours it took to make my first game

    Posted: 20 May 2021 08:19 AM PDT

I tracked all the hours I spent working on my first game, from the very beginning up to the game's final state, and separated them into different tasks (graphics, audio etc). I now finally took the time to go through the data and made some charts. I figured some of you might also be interested in seeing them:

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts about the numbers!

Why monsters in games aren't as scary as in images/videos

    Posted: 20 May 2021 04:18 AM PDT

It's been bugging me since I started trying to make a horror game, why monsters' appearances in most games are a bit unsettling at best? I came across a video recently (youtu. be /RzxVJwgUrbA) (Warning: unnerving images with unnerving music. Apparently reddit makes video's thumbnail post's thumbnail, so I thought it's a good idea to split the link) and images with monsters here give me an unsettling feeling that I can never get from games

But I can't make out what exactly makes them so scary. Do you have any ideas?

Looking for a tool to create a simple text-driven game, any suggestions?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 10:55 AM PDT

Hello, I'm creating a chat-based game for my university submission, and wanted to do something more advanced than a Telegram chat-bot story. I would like to create a simple game similar to GoViral (https://www.goviralgame.com/en) or Bad News (https://www.getbadnews.com/#intro)

Player would move through a linear story which would resemble interacting with a chatbot, and would be allowed to choose different answers that would affect the ending, therefore I need a way to store and change variables based on player's actions. It would be a really simple UI with essentially one field displaying PNG's and three clickable PNG's containing answers on the bottom. I don't have much experience with coding so I prefer node-based systems, but can do simple scripting if necessary.

Anyone knows of a tool that would help me accomplish this?

Recommend me some good Game dev podcasts

    Posted: 20 May 2021 05:31 AM PDT

    Hello fellow game dev's,

Like many out there I enjoy watching game dev related video's on my second screen while working. I tried listening to some podcasts, since they seem to be quite popular these days, but I could never really get into them. I assume mainly because I could never find any podcasts of decent quality tailored to what I like (game dev ofc).

So I turn to you, what are some good podcasts about game dev that you can recommend? The specifics don't really matter as long as it's game dev related; so art, programming, design, tips and tricks...
I'm not looking for specifically big channels, but rather quality content that is easy to listen to.

    Many thanks.

Using The Tools Available to Make a Game

    Posted: 20 May 2021 09:55 AM PDT

We all love sharing the tools and resources now available to help make games a reality. But very often there's a backlash against using those assets and resources.

I really feel strongly that if not for these tools the indie game scene would be almost non-existent. And yet I see people slurring the work of other devs as being an "asset-flips". The suggested insult being that the dev had the audacity to purchase asset packs and use them to ensure they can bring their game vision to life.

I understand there have been devs that managed to crank out quick sub-par games to make a quick dime. But why are we setting that as the baseline to judge the use of assets and tools? Why are we hell-bent on reinventing the wheel?

Sergio of Lioncode Games wrote this blog piece about content creation in game design and I obviously have my opinion on this. But I want to hear yours. What are your feelings towards using assets etc in your game development?

How important is it for a game design to bring something new to the table?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 04:28 AM PDT

When designing a game (especially an indie), how important are fresh mechanics, level design, etc. for creating a successful game? (Successful meaning that it sells enough to keep a studio open and is received favorably.)

A lot of memorable games are ones that tried something new and did it successfully. Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Portal, etc.

There also games that don't do anything notably new, but are still viewed favorably (or at least sell very well). The Last of Us, Call of Duty, Hearthstone, etc.

It's a bit harder to find games that don't do anything new. I feel that the ones that don't try something new are successful due to an established brand or studio. When it comes to indie games, the successful ones seem to be ones that heavily rely on a new aspect of game design. Minecraft, Outer Wilds, Braid, etc. The otherwise would-be-clones that are made don't seem to gain much traction.

When you design your games, how would you approach that "something new?"

    Open Survey: Creator Pain Points

    Posted: 20 May 2021 11:28 AM PDT

    Hello!

My name is Cody and I'm a co-founder at Master Of. We're a digital product team who design tools to help creators like you focus on what matters most: creating content.

We want our tools to remove the bottlenecks in the creative process that make doing what you love feel like a chore. We'd love to hear what parts of your process you wish could be easier, so we put together a short 1-3 minute survey about what makes creating frustrating. If you'd like to share more about your process, there's a section at the end of the survey to leave your email for future surveys (completely optional).

    Here's the survey link:

Making Video Game Music using samples from older records

    Posted: 20 May 2021 11:20 AM PDT

So, I'm not into developing video games, as much as the next guy, but I'm always into creating video game music, ever since Sonic, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and others have stepped into the game of their OST and the game itself. I wonder if I can make an OST for a video game (if I'm part of it), with just sampling older records from record stores or thrift shops. It'll be cool if the rest of the music played in the video game were samples from different records. Is that possible?

How hard it is to make a platformer fighter?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 10:15 AM PDT

Greetings people from reddit, since a while i have this ideia about a platform fighter that is not a smashclone (since i never played smash in my life, anyway),but since i never made a single game (i made tic tac toe on C++ for studie purpose, but i dont count), i have this doubt, how hard coud bee to execute this ideia.

    Here the details

    Combat system:

    Health bar

    Special bar

Combat system with simple and easy combo execution using just 2 buttons.

The combo options change depending on the character's movement, for example:

    Combo 1: during walk (button 1) (button 1) (button 2) (button 1)

    Combo 2: during walk (button 2) (button 2) (button 1) (button 1)

    Combo 3: during running (button 1) (button 2) (button 1) (button 2)

    ......

    Combo 5: during jump (button 1) (button 2) (button 1) (button 1)

    etc...

Special moves would be used by pressing two buttons at same time

About the platformer part, there is nothing special about it, i just think would be very interesting since will add some vertical complexity in the game and more space alowing more than 2 players. I have basic knowledge of programing logic, C++, C#, blender and some english, but since i never made a real game i have no notion of how dificulty could be to made this kind of game, i apreciate any answer and any tip.

    Thanks for reading.

Unity or Godot for a small mobile 2D game

    Posted: 20 May 2021 09:55 AM PDT

I have an idea about a small mobile 2D game and I'm wondering if Unity or Godot will be the better choice. I know some C# from my years at university and I have also made some small stuff with Unity, but I can't say I'm any good with the engine itself. Lately I see people talking about Godot a lot and how it is better for 2D because Unity is more 3D focused. What's your opinion? Which one should I choose for the small mobile game idea?

Would you buy marketing services? Thinking about starting a indie game marketing company

    Posted: 20 May 2021 09:41 AM PDT

I've done the marketing for several games already. It's been pretty interesting work.

The main game I worked on, the guy dropped $1000 on web design, lots of money on trailers, etc. He was just overwhelmed. He was $50,000 in debt from his game. Building a game is huge project.

Marketing is a skill...if you have unlimited time and short on funds, yes you should learn it do it yourself. But I think a lot of developers should just focus on the game.

I was thinking about going out on my own. I was even thinking about hiring a filipino VA to help out and cut down on costs.

I think the big issue is that the market might not be there. A lot of indie games have sales for less than $1000. I guess that's my question for you. What would you look in for a service? Would you consider hiring a marketer?

What if it was pay for performance?

Or A-La-Carte? Instead of a monthly retainer of $x month?

Why do physical objects blend together or phase through each other in games?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 09:00 PM PDT

So I was watching Markiplier's walkthrough of RE 8 today, and one of the enemies started moving inside the ground. You know that thing when physical objects in games start to blend inside one another and it breaks your immersion but it's also hilarious? I always thought that was an issue of old computers/graphics engines just not being able to keep up. It's really not that big of a deal for me and it certainly happens less these days, but why do you think it still happens? And for that matter, why do you think it used to happen back in the day at all? I don't know how physics works in games, so to someone more experienced this may seem like a dumb question, but I'm really just curious.

Edit: Thanks a lot for the replies guys, this discussion has been quite fun.

How bad would it be to start using my working title for my game everywhere, and much later on update it to the real title?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 08:46 AM PDT

I want to create a steam page and begin to redirect people who are interested to wishlist my game. The thing is I don't have a game title yet. How bad would it be to start using my working title everywhere, and much later on update it to the real title?

Will it confuse people, is there any negative backlash I should be aware of?
