What's your favorite playlist while coding?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 12:40 AM PDT

Would anyone be willing to share some good playlists to listen to while coding?

I prefer electronic/instrumental songs without too many lyrics as that tends to draw my attention away.

What's your best portable WFH set-up?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 02:55 AM PDT

Yesterday, the corporate officially confirmed that we can keep working from home despite the drop in the Covid cases. While we worked remotely during quarantine, we were given 15" HP envy laptops, but tbh I'm not big on them because of the tiny screen. Besides, we have a dual-monitor set-up at work, so I'm used to having enough screen estate for everything I do. Doing it with the laptop is virtually impossible, as you can imagine. So when I was working from home, I used my desktop with a 32" 4K Dell monitor.

Now that we've been actually assured that we can work from home if we feel like it, I want to find a good use for this laptop. For one, it's portable, and I also don't want to keep my development synchronized on my PC and laptop. Plus, there's also the third environment to keep updated on my office PC when I drop by from time to time.

So I've decided to give it a shot and try configuring it to fit my needs. I usually have Visual Studio Code open on one screen and browser on another when I code - just like everyone else, I'll wager. That's why I need at least 2 monitors for comfortable work. I know it's gonna be too much hassle to use the same 32" Dell for PC and laptop, constantly switching cables.

I looked for options suitable for my case and found a seemingly perfect solution - Ofiyaa Tri-Screen, a type of laptop workstation with two additional monitors. I've never seen anything like this before, and I've never heard of anyone using it as well.

Hence, my question - have any of you guys used a similar system, maybe from a different brand? I'm not dead-set on this one. I just need to know if these additional monitors actually hang tight or shake with every press of the key. Would you recommend splurging on this contraption, or should I just look for a way to connect wirelessly to my Dell and adapt to working with one monitor at work?

I'd appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks in advance, guys.

Is it shameful to use an easy website builder if you are a professional software dev?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 02:39 AM PDT

Not sure where to post that, but short story long: I am a professional software developer in OO languages & multiple frameworks, and I currently need to build my own website to showcase some projects I worked on (and since I work on closed-source projects, GitHub isn't an option).

Would it be suitable to use a WYSIWYG website builder such as Wix or would that be shameful/ incoherent for an experienced software dev?

I don't want to spend my free time working on my personal website but I do not know if it sounds awkward as a "tech person" to use easy website builders.

EDIT: I would like to thank everyone, and I wasn't expect so many answers! I should have specified that I am not a web dev but a software dev, I just used this sub to have the best answers from pro web devs.

I will go with an easy website builder to just focus on my professional work and not spend too much time on unnecessary stuff! As many people said (which I really believe in), the best skill for a dev is to know what tools are suitable for a specific task, and my website isn't a showcase but just a better way to display my portfolio! Thanks again!

As I approach retiring from this career, where do I go from here?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 01:24 PM PDT

So this one is going to be a bit different. I am looking for ideas about jobs to research as a 45 year old designer/developer with a couple decades of experience. I planned to exit the web industry in the next 3-5 years. I have a couple of degrees, but they will be useless outside this field so consider them null in this search. Maybe it is a career you came from? I considered teaching, but that does not excite me.

    Only two requirements.

    1. It has to pay a fair wage at the entry level. So all trades are on the table. As are all professional careers.
    2. Cannot require being on my feet all day - bad leg and back from a bomb - but also, I don't want to sit all day anymore.

Tasked to take down someone else's website for my job ?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 03:57 PM PDT

Hey everyone would really appreciate any help on this! Im crossposting it from r/techsupport but im honestly not sure if this is a place where you can ask questions. I apologize if it is not

I work at a company that changed ownership 3 years ago. The original owner had a buddy make a website for the company many years back. It was never updated and has all kinds of old info - old enough to link to the companies defunct Myspace account.

When ownership changed hands the current owner (my boss) made a whole new website which I help with. The first website address (the companies name .com) was set by original owner's buddy to forward to ours (a shorter version of the company name)

three years later the original website has stopped forwarding to ours. Someone must still be paying for the domain and hosting. The WHOIS comes up as Akamai Technologies. I got in contact with the previous owner who was of no help, and his buddy who setup the website does not respond to my emails.

Is there anything I can do? our customers are getting confused with the other website being up and ive been tasked with taking it down...

    Thanks everyone :-)

How does this side menu hide itself?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 07:49 AM PDT

I am trying to replicate this codepen. Here's my attempt as of now.

One thing I don't understand is how the original side menu stays hidden off screen. The code doesn't use "visibility: hidden" or "opacity: 0;". And when you press the button, the menu slides from the left side of the phone, whereas my menu slides from it's original position (you can see it sliding from "outside" the phone).

I think it has something to do with the parent container of the menu having "position:relative;" but thats where I got stuck.

    I need some ideas

    Posted: 21 May 2021 05:06 AM PDT

    Hi Web Devs,

I am participating in a hackathon(a development contest for around 48hrs). People pitch their projects according to the theme of the hackathon. This time it is Mental Health. I don't have good ideas running on my mind. I am asking here to get some ideas and build something in it.

Can't wait to receive ideas from my favourite redditors.

Learning fullstack dev. Thinking of switching from Windows to Linux (not dual boot). What software will I possibly miss out of having that is dev related?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 02:03 AM PDT

I also want to get into mockup/wireframing so I was thinking that maybe by switching full time to Linux I'll miss something like Figma or AdobeXD.

What's your opinion on curved monitors instead of dual?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 01:36 PM PDT

First they felt very much like a fad, but I am aware that they have actually been improving a lot. What always killed it for me was low pixel density and the horrible glare.

Curious to know what your take on it is as I'd love to have less objects on my desk if possible :)

Any tips on user authentication that works across all browsers?

    Posted: 21 May 2021 12:41 PM PDT

Hey all, I implemented user registration/login/session functionality on a site I'm working on using express-session. It works fine locally, but once deployed to Heroku, none of this functionality works on Chrome (the only browser it's fine in is Firefox). As in, no one can log in or register, and the session cookie is never saved. Apparently this is a well known thing. Anyone here used a different library to achieve this? Would love any advice!
