Monthly Getting Started / Web Dev Career Thread Posted: 01 May 2021 05:00 AM PDT Due to a growing influx of questions on this topic, it has been decided to commit a monthly thread dedicated to this topic to reduce the number of repeat posts on this topic. These types of posts will no longer be allowed in the main thread. Many of these questions are also addressed in the sub FAQ or may have been asked in previous monthly career threads. Subs dedicated to these types of questions include r/cscareerquestions/ for general and opened ended career questions and r/learnprogramming/ for early learning questions. A general recommendation of topics to learn to become industry ready include: Front End Frameworks (React/Vue/Etc) Testing (Unit and Integration) Common Design Patterns (free ebook) You will also need a portfolio of work with 4-5 personal projects you built, and a resume/CV to apply for work. Plan for 6-12 months of self study and project production for your portfolio before applying for work. [link] [comments]

I was rejected for a Junior Front-End job. What did I do wrong? Posted: 01 May 2021 01:23 PM PDT Since January I've been trying to get a new job, as a Front-End developer. Currently I work as a Database Analyst in Brazil and have been studying Front-End for about a year. Starting 2021 I finally felt 'ready' to start looking and applying to jobs, and I've been joining all sorts of tests that take multiple days to deliver, and I was rejected from all of them. Today I was rejected yet again, but I felt that I've delivered what was expected for a Junior position. Could someone please tell me what did I do that could be the reason why I was rejected? All I had to do was transfer the Figma mockup to a functional website, and I did it using Next.js. Take a look at the mockup that they've sent me and also the repository to the project. I'd really appreciate if someone pointed to me why this isn't good enough for a Junior position and what I could do to make it better. I must get a new job soon because I'm forced to go to the office while Covid is still pretty strong in Brazil, but it's been literally impossible. Please help me out. [link] [comments]
Any Shopify devs here? How do you like it? Posted: 01 May 2021 01:06 PM PDT Has ayone here gotten hired to work exclusively with Shopify? I'm a former jr dev that worked with Wordpress mostly. The pay was fine but the job was hell at times due to just how messy Wordpress can be once you start introducing plug-ins and other things into it. With that said I'm seeing a small demand for Shopify devs in my state and I am thinking of trying it out. The pay looks to actually be better than what the average Wordpress agency is willing to pay. Is Shopify a much more simpler dev experience? Are you coding plug-ins (or apps as I think they call it on Shopify) or are you mostly just taking a sketch design and turning it into a working Shopify theme? I guess what I'm trying to get at is that Shopify dev work looks similar to how Wordpress frontend dev work looked like but with more pay and less headaches. Just wanting to check and see what some of your experiences are with Shopify. [link] [comments]

What are the steps that you usually take when developing a mobile app? Posted: 01 May 2021 07:07 PM PDT Hello, I am a backend engineer, I am just trying to understand the process of building a large web app. I have an idea, and I I have used Figma to create a mockup. I understand that we need 4 steps (1) create a mockup and the story (2) create design and assets and then (3) build web app (4) build backend to capture interaction and store data. If you collaborate with someone who would create design and assets, do you need to ask for specific formats?. what kind of tools do you usually use when you collaborate with designers?. what do they usually offer (PSD templates, or HTML templates?). I am trying to add different persona and themes, so we need different 3d and design assets. Some ppl recommended to use pre-baked themes like in here, but I already have the figma prototype. Could you please recommend a specific guide/tutorials, or share your experience on how to build large apps as a team?. [link] [comments]

Wordpress is reporting the wrong php version & Ubuntu version Posted: 01 May 2021 05:56 PM PDT I've been doing some work backing up a wordpress site and noticed that wordpress is reporting the wrong version of php on all wordpress sites hosted on my VPS. Wordpress is reporting that I'm using php version 7.0.33-37 on ubuntu16.04.1 but I have php version 7.4.13 installed and I recently upgraded ubuntu to 18.04.5. I searched google and apparently I need to update the info in php.ini but I do not have this file in any folders. Am I overlooking a location where it's installed? I also checked these files: wp-load But I could not find a setting to change. [link] [comments]
In a bit of a funk project wise, what can I do to get myself out of it? Posted: 01 May 2021 05:40 PM PDT I want to do something new in the language I will probably be writing in for work. I was thinking of maybe converting my class projects in the new language, but most of them weren't really that interesting, and a lot of the ideas I find online I did in class. I want to find something that interests me, or is maybe at least useful. So how do I get myself out of this funk? [link] [comments]
Help me choose a development stack for a business Posted: 01 May 2021 11:20 AM PDT Hello, i recently became a part of a business where me (computer science student) and my partner (electrical engineer) came up with an IoT idea. Basically, we need a website for showcasing our business including user login system and payment handling. On the other hand, we also need a mobile app (ios and android) which will fetch data from a server and will show the data on the mobile application. Apart from this, my mobile application will not have any other functionality. I need to have a single database from which my website and mobile apps will fetch data from. Which technology stack will help me create website and mobile app with minimal hosting prices since we are just starting out business. Also, since i am a student, i know basic wordpress website creation, basic react, html, css but i can learn things with less learning curve. Help would be greatly appreciated since there are so many options out on the internet and i can't decide which one will fit my usecase. [link] [comments]
How does python compare to Nodejs as a backend language? Posted: 01 May 2021 10:39 AM PDT I started learning web development about a year ago and started with backend five months ago following an online course were they taught nodeJS. Today someone offered me a job (more like gig) and It didn't workout because they were using python as a backend language. I don't have any background on python. so how does python fair for backend? is worth learning at the moment? [link] [comments]

Key-frames collapse of table row Posted: 01 May 2021 12:34 PM PDT Is there no way of animating the collapse of a table row using key-frames? I've got right to the end of my animation implementation, implemented the JS to make it happen, now trying to get the row to collapse out and now I'm reading that table rows don't respect height values! 🙈🙈😬😬💩💩 Arrrgh! How can I enter an array into mysql database column Posted: 01 May 2021 08:25 AM PDT What I want is for a result like this, when a user wants to GET a specific object by id, for example [ { "id": 2, "name": "John Johnson", "hobby": "skating", "images": [image2, image 3, image4] } ] I'm using node and mysql [link] [comments]
I need help with backing up a wordpress website and MySql database Posted: 01 May 2021 03:42 PM PDT Hi, I'm trying to backup a live website on wordpress that's using woocommerce. Here's what I did so far:
The problem is that when I change the prefix, I don't see the backed up site. If I leave the st_ prefix, it's backed up. My worry is that if I leave the st_ prefix, if I make changes to the dev site and/or database, it will also make changes to the live site. Is this possible even though the database name is different? Sorry for the noob questions, I've just never done this before. [link] [comments]

Do I need to know back end to build my own blog? Posted: 01 May 2021 09:25 AM PDT Hi. Not sure if this is the right sub but I'm giving it a shot. I've been thinking about starting a blog for a little while, and I've been wanting to build it from scratch by myself. I'm a decent front end programmer but I haven't gotten around to learn back end yet (I'm planning on it). I was wondering if it's going to be an issue. I want to be able to sort my posts by a couple of parameters and I'm afraid that eventually having 100-200 posts on the same page is going to slow it down significantly, rather than being able to only load a couple of items at a time using pagination. What are your thoughts? Is it worth trying to build a blog like this, or should I wait until I know enough to do pagination? [link] [comments] |
