Creating unnecessary problems to get players to pay to get rid of it. Posted: 04 May 2021 07:20 AM PDT One of my favorite indie devs does this. If you die in the game you wake up in the hospital with a doctor. They simply refuse to revive you unless you buy the premium membership which cost real life money. In his most recent game, you sometimes have deadlines to complete a task. One of those tasks is to get a pro membership or your game end automatically. I think this is a scummy way to get people to pay. He also does this thing on twitter where he gets mad at the review scores of his most recent games. Do you think he should get people to buy the membership that way? I'm not a dev so I wouldn't know [link] [comments]

I'm having trouble working/overcoming mental illness Posted: 04 May 2021 02:14 AM PDT I was going to title this something like "How do I make a game?" but that might give the wrong impression. I used to be pretty good (very ok), but over the last 5~10 years I've been struggling with a mental illness (I could say what kind but it's not relevant, unless you think it is then IDK) I'm almost 40 and I still really want to make a game, and I do have the technical and artistic knowhow to do so (at least with programmer art/sound, hey - it doesn't have to be a GOOD game) - but the biggest hurdle for me is, well, being kinda insane (I do have meds). So, I wanted to ask... ... How do you make a game? I'm asking from a solodev point of view rather than a team or company development point of view, it's just me here. I find it very difficult to put in the game to actual work since I spend most of my day just drinking (flavoured water, not alcohol) and studying game stuff. I more just wanna get it out of my system, y'know? So I just wanna make a crappy something... put it on Steam, make a one dollar (even though I'd be technically in the red) and then say... yay, I achieved that. ... If you think this isn't applicable to this sub I think I could x-post to one of the mental health related subs, not sure. Looked at demo download conversion rates for our game. Here's the data. Posted: 04 May 2021 05:27 AM PDT We decided to look into the conversion rate for demo/free trial downloads to purchase of full version of our game Hexagroove: Tactical DJ. TL;DR
The game was initially released on Nintendo Switch but is now available on Xbox and Steam as well. On Xbox, we have a free trial and not a "demo" although the functionality and content is the same regardless. The data is from Q1 this year (January-March) and during that time period we ran discounted sales of the game on all three platforms, hence we figured it would be interesting to compare conversion rates between on and off sale periods. A comparison between the three platforms is not what is of interest here since they equate different percentage of our total sales and downloads (see Table 1). Conversion for Steam sales for example should be taken lightly as these downloads represent less than a quarter of total cross platform sales. For Nintendo Switch conversion, we could acquire regional data as well from our three biggest markets NA, Europe and Japan (Table 3).
Table 1 - Platform percentage of total downloads Here are the conversions for Xbox and Steam, followed by Nintendo Switch including regional data
Table 2 - Steam and Xbox conversion rate (Q1, off and on sale)
Table 3 - Nintendo Switch conversion rate by region (Q1, off and on sale) On sale/Off sale The difference between on sale and off sale conversion tells us what you might expect from running a discount which is a significant increase in conversion percentage. On Xbox, the conversion during a sale was higher than we expected, considering Switch covers 2/3 of total demo downloads. Our promotion of these sales are however very limited to only posting on social media, some light promotion in #self-promo channels on Discord etc. No paid advertisement. For the sale on Switch we advertised here on Reddit, but with a very small budget allocated to it.
Table 4 - Shows how downloads of demo and the full game are divided between US, Europe and Japan on Nintendo Switch Xbox surprises! Based on our knowledge, Nintendo Switch is usually more suitable for indie games and solo gamedevs than Xbox, so it's interesting to see that the conversion on Xbox is higher regardless of discounts/sales periods. This could potentially shed some light on the viability of targeting Xbox for your game as an alternative to Nintendo Switch (Should your resources allow it). On Nintendo's eShop you can however filter between games with downloadable demos available which is somewhat more difficult for Xbox since Microsoft does not have filters for free trials. Although when going through the list of games in categories/genres related to our game, we found there are few games on Xbox currently with a free trial. Filtering through games with demos here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/game-demos/games/xbox?category=strategy the amount is even lower.
Table 5 - Games on Switch and Xbox with free trials/demos available, including us (From genres/categories relevant to our game) Conclusion We thought this might be of interest for anyone looking to publish with a free trial/demo on either Xbox or Switch as (in our case) the numbers on Xbox looks promising and the number of games with free trials AND demos available are low. There are of course multiple factors in place here influencing these numbers (marketing activity, category of game, luck, timing etc.) and we're sure there are more insightful ways to measure conversion rates, with richer sets of data. Either way we hope you'll find some of the it useful/insightful. [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2021 07:54 AM PDT I want to start a small project in Rust to create a tiny interactive 3D toy, what do you guys think is the better tool or lib to do this? [link] [comments]
Demand for text/image based game development tutorials? Posted: 04 May 2021 02:29 AM PDT When I started making games (mainly with Unity) I always preferred text based tutorials that didn't waste my time asking to subscribe/hit the like button/check out sponsors etc. Now that I'm fairly comfortable with some techniques, I'm considering starting a blog/website with text (+image/gifs) based tutorials about things I couldn't find or understand easily when starting out. Do you think there is a point writing tutorials like this? Would you use them instead / besides video tutorials? Posted: 04 May 2021 06:26 AM PDT One of the most common things I hear is that "idea guys" are a dime a dozen and since this is a creative industry everyone has a dozen of their own. However, this is something that I personally struggle with. I've been making games on and off as a hobby for a number of years, never released any final products. I'm a software engineer by trade and love the process of programming something and seeing it come to life. My issue is that i'm at a point where I'm pretty sure I have the know how to actually make a game from start to finish. The areas I can't do (modelling, textures, music) I can comfortably afford to outsource. I just don't have a project to work on. Now let me be clear I do get ideas. But they're of the typical grand scale "I'm gonna make Skyrim 2.0" as they're the types of games I enjoy however my years in the software industry has made me very aware of time frames and realistic scope. I know that I need to have something more simple to actually get it out the door but yet another indie platformer bores me. Simple puzzle game? Yawn. How do you not only find inspiration but find realistic inspiration? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2021 06:05 AM PDT I was wondering what everyone's preferred way of keeping track of their projects is? What are you using and why? And if you are not using anything, why aren't you? [link] [comments]
Love2d, Phaser 3, libgdx, Which one framework recommendation for making a 2D cross-platform game? Posted: 04 May 2021 06:16 AM PDT Hello I would like to build the 2D cross-platform 2D cross-platform game(HTML5, Android, ios) using game framework. I do some research on the internet, I find Love2d, Phaser 3 , libgdx can build cross-platform game. here is my option of them. Love2D: easy to learn, but too few communities. Phaser 3: It can easy to using Cordova to export android and ios games, very good communities, many tutorials, and example, it can build game very fast, but it is bad performance on mobile. libgdx: Very suitable to build android, but too few start game templates, examples, demo.....it will take too much time to learn and find the code from Github to test...... Love2D and Phaser 3 document and information and example are much better than libgdx which game framework for your recommendation to develop cross-platform game??? thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2021 12:13 PM PDT Hey guys. Happy Star Wars Day! How y'all doing? Not too bad, I hope?? Haven't posted here for awhile, but thought some of you may find this useful... I have made an archive of all the sound effects we have given away at Sonniss over the years. It's 150GB in total. Thousands of files. Absolute insanity if you ask me.... you'll probably need a new hard drive for all of this (Sorry about that) :D Total value of this archive is about $30,000 (roughly) - They're the actual files we sell (nothing has been cut, edited or modified) Everything is royalty-free and commercially usable. No attribution is required and you can use them on an unlimited number of projects for the rest of your lifetime. Once you have downloaded the files, please help by sharing, seeding or uploading them to mirrors. Thank you in advance. If you can throw any seedboxes my way please do! (I am not sure how much our servers can take). We usually give these sounds away at GDC, but because of Covid, everything is up in the air at the moment. I will be releasing the next edition in July. So if you already have the past files, please ignore this post. It's just a collection of everything we have previously released to make mine and your life easier. (I am forever sharing links to multiple reddit posts, but I wont need to any more) Visit the website now to download the files: https://sonniss.com/gameaudiogdc (permanent link) Or alternatively, just click through to the other reddit posts I have created over the years. How should a character be animated when I have different equipable outfits? Posted: 04 May 2021 05:05 AM PDT I'm sure Minecraft Dungeons isn't the best example as the model is fairly simple but it's more to show what it should look like. Outfits can only be equipped as a whole, a piece of one outfit is not interchangeable with one from another outfit. Posted: 04 May 2021 09:50 AM PDT Hey people. Raylib seems to be an awesome framework/library for game development, but it has so many bindings I honestly don't know which one to use. I know how to write Python and Javascript well, but I've played around with lot's of other languages including C, GoLang, Nim and TypeScript (I think TS has a raylib binding because of Node, but I'm not sure)). I'm also planning on diving deeper on one of those 4. Any suggestion? [link] [comments]

need help with changing armour and such Posted: 04 May 2021 12:10 PM PDT I'm trying to figure out going about creating interchangeable armour and assigning different attributes to them so I have some questions and would like some advice / help (I use ue4 and blender btw) I want to have different armour sets that all look different and the player can freely change between them how would I go about implementing and animating this? I want the armours to have different affects ie knight armour making it so you have better damage resistance or something like ranger armour making it so you can fire arrows faster so how would I be able to have these armours change base stats? how would I make an armour set have a new attack it gives the player. the example I have I want a set of mage armour to give the player a spell to freeze an enemy in place so how would I do something like this if anyone takes the time to respond, I sincerely thank you for the help. Creating a Unity based experience for anniversary with my girlfriend? Posted: 04 May 2021 06:12 AM PDT Cross-posting here in hopes of getting more feedback! (Originally posted to r/Unity3D) Hey everyone, Hoping to get some feedback here and to collect some new ideas. A little background on me before I ask my question. I'm a Unity developer who has been working with the engine for over 7 years now. As such, I'm not asking "How do I get started making games?". My girlfriend and I are celebrating our anniversary soon and I wanted to make it special . I'm thinking about creating a WebGL based Unity "experience". She doesn't really do a lot of gaming, so I wanted to make it simple. I've seen a few other posts on this sub either asking about or posting similar projects. But I can't seem to find anything really unique or inspiring. Here's some of the ideas I have so far:
I have a decent amount of time to work on this project, so I can really polish it and make it nice. Any feedback or new ideas here would be HUGELY appreciated. Honestly I'm not sure I'm too happy with some of the ideas I've come up with so far. [link] [comments]

When to start marketing a game? Posted: 04 May 2021 10:39 AM PDT I don't feel I am anywhere near ready to start marketing my current game project, which is still in very early development stages, but I am curious at what point in a commercial project (even a small, solo indie game dev one) should I start thinking about marketing a game?
