    Am I stupid? learn programming

    Am I stupid?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 02:17 AM PDT

I've been programming for 2 years now but I feel like I still don't know anything. I know all the basics and even advanced topics but I still just can't make anything. Feels like everyone at my college can make all these side-projects but I cant do jack shit. I really need to get out of this hell but I don't know how

    CS books for casual reading?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 03:32 PM PDT

There's currently a void in my life. When I want to learn something specifically, I would watch videos or go through a book on it, find some articles or sometimes research papers. That's what everyone in software does. As far as books go, CS textbooks are a dense combination of theory and good practices, and most include exercises and problem sets. They expect you to 'work on' something to understand it.

Which is fine. I'm not complaining about that. It's the way it should be. But sometimes I just want something to read. 'Passive learning' so to speak, without needing to dive deep into exercises and implementation for knowledge to truly rest in my brain. Sometimes I want a book I could read from start to finish without opening up an editor or picking up a notepad. Just me and a book, you know? A book that I can read casually and also benefits me in my career.

If you have any recommendations of that sort, please comment them here. Specific topics are welcome, too, I'm into web, games, graphics, UX and functional programming, but don't hesitate to branch out, someone else reading could be interested!

Good books to brush up on Algebra, Geometry and maybe some Calc?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 10:48 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have been self learning C++ and JS for a while now (weird duo, I know). After trying to follow a Game Engine series, I feel I'm lacking/forgotten some fundamental concepts in math. Has anyone had this issue and found a nice series of books that helped them satisfy their needs?

I suppose I could also follow an online series too if anybody has any suggestions along those lines.

    Thank you.

What are some in demand job skills I should know/learn?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 09:49 PM PDT

Backstory: I've just graduated with a 2 year diploma in Software Development. So far I've been unsuccessful landing a job and in the meantime I'm hoping to pick up new/more programming skills.

Question: What are some popular/in demand skills that jobs in the software industry usually have?

I've created a small list already (docker, nodejs, spring, etc), but I was hoping yalls could list a few others in case I miss them or what not.

I really appreciate any replies. Have a wonderful day/evening! :)

Did I just ruin my programming path? 19. Stuck in life and in pain :/

    Posted: 11 May 2021 11:01 PM PDT

Hey everyone, currently writing this after a miserable day. Failed my final for my college class and now have a 65% (D) in the class finalized.

I am a freshmen community college student, majoring in computer science. My first semester I got an A in my programming class, A in English and 2 B's on my other classes which landed me comfortably at a 3.46 gpa.

This has been the first time in my life I had actually been able to do something and change my life around. I'm trying to keep this short as possible to not bore anyone since everyone has a sob story, but for the first time I actually felt happy, my parents were proud, life just seemed so perfect to what it was once in my terror years in highschool at home with family life and getting into trouble in school.

However second semester comes, and I screw it up like everything I do. I took 2 programming classes, a math class, and 2 general education classes. I was doing great at first, but the last few months have slowly fallen and spiraled down. Issues with parents, with myself, financial issues, everything. I managed to land 2 Bs for my math and general Ed class, an A for one of them and got my 65% for one of the classes and have a C in the other and Thursday will be the day I see what happenes.

My gpa will be sitting around a 2.9 What do I do? Am I screwed? I read online that after failing some classes transferring to a state college or university is unlikely and I'm scared beyond comprehension. Everything I ever told and promised myself and my parents down the drain. What's worse is that if I want to apply for a computer science major for a state college after my 2 years, will my chances be lower because of the specific grades for computer science related classes??

I am genuinely just so terrified. I was starting my life off so good and I thought I could change but it seems as if the battle is in winnable. I am 19 and just really in need of some advice, words of wisdom, reality checks etc. I've been learning and want to continue learning on my own and make projects and ideas with programming but without the bachelors it seems as if getting a job anywhere will be impossible. I want to have the bachelors and more but it seems as if I cut my path and ended it by failing the classes I needed to prove to be able to even be considered to try and get a bachelors.

What do I do? Seriously, I can't take it anymore inside my head :/

Am I late to the web development party?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 09:49 PM PDT

I've started using TALL stack and I'm stunned how much easier it is to build stuff. So, I'm like, how is web development going to grow even bigger if tools allows us to do more work in less time, logic would suggest that the demand for web developers will go down significantly because of this. And then improvements in AI and stuff like WordPress and Wix are improving features and growing from year to year, so I'm quite worried that all the time I've spent learning web development will go to waste pretty soon. If that is so, in what other area I should invest time that is even remotely similar to the web development and will be growing in demand in the future.

Hello coders, I've written a small story to understand the concept of Blockchain Network. Can u please give it a read and share your reviews? It goes like

    Posted: 11 May 2021 08:29 PM PDT

Hey, are u still scratching your head to understand how Blockchain Technology works? Readout this small story and I promise you will not have any doubt after that.

So, here's Dave a friend of my friend Robin. Dave wants to send a letter to Robin so while he was on his way to the post office he saw a new board that reads as "Decentralised Postal Service".

Dave got curious and visited the store he went to Jazz who was the manager of the company and asked, What is this Decentralised Postal? Jazz replied come to the next thread I'll explain to you.

Do you know how normal postal works? asked Jazz. Dave said yes it's pretty simple we just submit the letter to the post office and the postman delivers it. Exactly now come to the next thread I'll tell you how we work.

When you go to the post office, it is the centralized network where your original letter may be changed but someone but when we say Decentralised Network, no central body or person can change your message. Come I'll explain to you how.

When you will give us your letter, we will send its 100(X) copies to our miner on different locations far away from each other and each miner will have to use a different fingerprint(hash code) to verify the message.

The miners will verify that your message is not changed and after that, the message will reach Robin. That sounds interesting but what if someone wrong verifies the message? asks Dave. I have the answer for you.

When a miner makes changes to your letter he will be easily caught and punished as if 51% of miners have successfully verified your letter then all other miners who did a false verification will be punished and may get fired from their job of mining.

This is really a secure way but Why do these miners verify my letter what will they get in return? asks Dave. That is a very interesting question, the miners will verify your letter because whenever they successfully verify your letter they will get a "Reward" replied Jazz.

Hmm, but what if 51% of people verify my message falsely? asks Dave. That will be really very extreme case because all of the miners are far away from each other maybe even from different countries.

So, if someone wants to change your message then he has to change the opinion of 51% of people who are far away from each other so it's nearly impossible to change the message.

Now, Dave is so obsessed with this method he always uses this "Decentralised Postal" whenever he want to send a letter.

This was a small story to understand how decentralised network. Obviously its alot more complex then it looks like. For real world life explanation change Dave and Robin with "Sender" and "Reciever" and change letter with "Bitcoin" and 100 miners from X amount of crypto miners.

Thought process on building a Chess game in JavaScript?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 11:05 PM PDT

I'm a little stuck where I'm not good enough to just build a project from complete scratch but I'm not that bad to the point where I don't even know how to figure out the subproblem. I just don't know what the subproblems are.

I guess, I'm good enough to use a hammer but not I'm good enough to build the house. And I was wondering:

What's the best approach for coming up with a Chess game without having to watch a tutorial on doing this step by step? I'd like to build something where my hand isn't being held throughout the project but I also don't know enough to getting something off the ground.

Any advice would greatly be appreciated!

    Audio podcast in python?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 10:35 PM PDT

I want to make a music app and as a feature I thought that for the members of the app I can allow them to create a podcast and let others tune in and listen at the same time, like a live stream without the video. How can I achieve this with python?

Quick Git main vs master question

    Posted: 11 May 2021 09:30 PM PDT

I'm creating a new repo on my Github and pushing my existing folder of files using the command line. The Github default instructions are as follows:

git init git add README.md git commit -m "first commit" git branch -M main git remote add origin https://github.com/neljson/Grocery-Market.git git push -u origin main

Now I understand Github did a recent change in 2020 of renaming master to main. I went ahead and followed the instructions above:

    screenshot of my terminal

    1) What exactly does the capital M do -M ?

    2) In my screenshot, I was initially in "master" branch. And I created a new branch called "main". Is the master branch still there and we just simply never touch again?

I guess I am confused as to which is my main big branch and which are my side feature branches. The way my terminal looked, with it being "master" initially and then changed to "main" makes it feel like the "main" branch is like a side/feature branch.

Just need some clarification on what exactly is happening in the Github -M command and what I am seeing in the terminal.

    Thank you!

Aspects of HTML/CSS to avoid/focus on..

    Posted: 11 May 2021 09:19 PM PDT

TL;DR = Are there any aspect of HTML/CSS I should avoid spending too much time on or do I need to know it ALL. Maybe a better question is are there any parts of HTML/CSS that are never used that I should avoid.

Hello all, I will keep my story short. I am teaching myself programming to one day become a front end dev. I know it will be hard and will be difficult to stay motivated but I have gone through worse and am up to the challenge. However I do not want to waste my time learning anything obsolete and I would rather use my time wisely. I'm starting with HTML and CSS. I am using freecodecamp, MDN, some youtube tutorials, Jon Duckett's book ( I know its is an old book but it is very informative), and anything else I stumble across. I am creating a rough draft website to promote my wife's personal training services and have covered everything from page layouts, to images and links etc.

I am starting to learn about tables as I finish up this post. Please fill me in on what is very important to know and possibly avoid. I am all on my own here and could use a nudge in the right direction. Thanks everyone.

I am missing something or the Wikipedia article for the Edmonds-Karp algorithm have an erro?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 04:08 PM PDT

I think the last path on the example execution is impossible since the (D, E) edge is in the wrong direction. I'm testing my implementation of the algorithm with this example and i am going crazy.

Problem is, thier in c++ and c-objective neither of which i know. So my questions. Why is it coded in multiple languages, does it have to be or can i code it in just one, and if so which one do i learn first? Also, If I wanted to make a UI for changing settings, what language do i need for the visuals?

    Resources for c++.

    Posted: 11 May 2021 08:07 PM PDT

Is there a good resource to learn basic level c++ syntax. I finished a semester of C at college and I would now like to learn c++. I don't want to spend time going over all the basics again like what are variables, functions, etc. I just want to learn the basic c++ syntax for now and then get into more details of what c++ has to offer and oop. If you think there is a better approach to learning c++ please let me know.
