When making a GooglePlay Developer account do I NEED to use my real name and surname on the "public developer name" field or can I use some random word I made up?

    Posted: 24 May 2021 01:49 AM PDT

I'm asking this because I don't want to get into any legal trouble, but I also don't want people to see my real name. The name I want to choose is not copyrighted and no one is using it yet.

How to deal with lack of focus when starting?

    Posted: 24 May 2021 04:07 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I've been a software developer for a while and recently decided to turn to gamedev as my creative outlet.

So tossing between Unreal/C++ and Unity/C#, decided to go with Unity and so far, i'm really liking it. The trouble is, between learning/doing tutorials and trying to create something, I'm all over the place and I'm a bit lost on where to go.

My question here is, what is your opinion about where should I focus? Continue to learn and see what happens OR focus on a project and learn with it, but with the risk of solidifying bad habits?

"Real artists ship", but I don't want to ship crap.

Godot support for 3D is too primitive, and Unity has become a wild mess over the years. Is Unreal Engine the only remaining option for 3D projects?

    Posted: 24 May 2021 08:41 AM PDT

I've been developing games for a bit over a decade now, but I've only worked with 2D, so I've been out of the loop regarding 3D integration into different engines and such.

I've worked with Unity for the best part of the previous decade, but ended up switching to Godot for my last project and was extremely satisfied with that switch.

But my next project is 3D, and I've seem that Godot is still too primitive in that regard, lacking even stuff like occlusion culling as an example.

This archived post that I found via a google search pretty much sums up my current feelings towards Unity and why I don't want to go back to it: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/het6br/unity_has_become_an_absolute_nightmare/

I took a look at the "Engine FAQ" of this subreddit, and unfortunately there aren't many 3D options there either, and the ones that I didn't know about I couldn't find much information regarding the usability at a production level, so I decided to post here, as perhaps someone might be able to give opinions.

TL;DR: I'm trying to look for other options for this 3D game. The obvious one being Unreal Engine, though it always felt like overkill for me (I say this purely from a "first impression" point-of-view, I never gave a UE a proper try, it just always looked like a bit more targeted at larger studios than at small indie teams).

So I'm really looking for some input about the current state of stable engines for use in a 3D game.

If it matters, the project is a 3d RPG with a "chibi" art-style, it's not anything photo-realistic or such.

Ups and downs about Remote Working

    Posted: 24 May 2021 07:33 AM PDT

I'm just someone deeply curious about remote working and its ups and downs in the progress of the development of your projects. Personally, I have enjoyed the remote life. But even I have faced some challenges here and there that kind of made me feel meh about remote work.

I want to know about you, about your experience and what advice you can share.

What kind of computer would you need to develop games?

    Posted: 24 May 2021 12:15 AM PDT

Like with somewhat decent graphics like maybe console 7 days to die or dayz.

Would a simple desktop be fine or would I need something like a 3000$ gaming pc.

    Basic 2D AI for enemies

    Posted: 24 May 2021 10:32 AM PDT

Does anyone know any good books or web sites that discuss basic 2D game AI such as

    - Pathfinding from A to B
    - Making the enemy move towards a player
    - Line of sight if enemy can see the player and isn't blocked by an object

I would like this to explain the algorithms behind them rather than using a specific tool with helper methods like Unity or Gamemaker Studio

    Posted: 24 May 2021 05:23 AM PDT

I'm just wondering if it would be possible but an example of how it could be done now would be nice. Basically I'm curious if we'd ever get to the point where an MMO developer could patch something in without kicking all players out and shutting down a server.

I'm working on a tcg card game and I don't know how to use Daz3d or anything. Is Character creator 3 my best option? I hope with these kind of programs I'll have a commercial liscence if I bought the 3d items.

What's the best program that has assets I can buy and pose the character and export pictures from that program?

I believe i am a victim of the dunning-kruger effect, and it has totally ruined my self esteem and motivation. What do i do about this?

    Posted: 24 May 2021 06:49 AM PDT

I dont know. I feel like i do this unconsciously. Overestimating how much I know and then when I realize how little I actually know and start gaining self awareness through introspecting as I look back on all my past cringe behaviors (some cringeworthy things i have done include bragging and also word salad, and taking offense whenever someone pointed out mistakes or challenged me), my self esteem starts to tank.

I am losing confidence and the ability to move forward. I feel demotivated because I cant believe I was foolish enough to think I was smart and knew anything in the first place. I also started acknowledging that its a wrong mindset to have and it only gets in the way- lack of humility comes at a cost; you stop learning, and your growth becomes stunted. You remain static and theres no more evolution, or change.

So please tell me. How do i deal with this lack of motivation? I feel like im too incompetent to achieve anything, and I feel really stupid for thinking I was smart. How do I stop clinging to these bad memories- where i did the most idiotic actions?

I feel like a complete idiot whos incapable of doing or accomplishing anything. Please, what do i do? What do i say to myself?

《Here are some examples of some of the cringe things i did in the past:》

Like how ppl brag about being able to do really simple stuff- because it makesbl them feel smart. Im 21 now but my middle school years and late teenager years are filled with embarassing moments like boasting about being able to do v simple things-- it gives the illusion that youre smart when in reality, youre the opposite.

Its really cringe worthy when you think about it.

Also ive acted superior to those dont have much scientific knowledge (again, this was in my middle school years and early teens).. and the irony is.. i didnt even understand it well either and was getting the facts wrong.

In retrospect, i realize how shitty and stupid my attitude and behavior was. And when i see others do the same things whether online or IRL (or feel like i used to or still sometimes share such qualities with antivaxxers and flat earthers) is triggering those bad memories and its killing my self esteem.

As a result, i have become unproductive

Browser Multiplayer - Are websockets good enough ?

    Posted: 24 May 2021 12:16 PM PDT

    Hi,

I´m planning to use websockets in a nodejs backend for a 2d multiplayer shooter. As many of you know websockets use TCP as their underlying transport protocol which begs the question if websockets are good enough to provide a nice player experience ? I imagine that lost and retransmitted packets can cause a lot of trouble (jerky movements, jumping around ...). Would you be so kind to share some of your experience in working with websockets ?

    Thank you :)

    Bullet time/Slow motion

    Posted: 24 May 2021 08:15 AM PDT

How is bullet time/slow motion mechanics programmed for gameplay? I want to implement a bullet time mechanic for a gun with the crosshair indicating a circular meter of how much bullet time is left? Inspiration for this includes rockstar games like GTA 5, RDR and Max Payne.

Creating simple rig for game animation in Maya.

    Posted: 24 May 2021 11:26 AM PDT

this is the best Guide I have ever found, why do I think so?

because it shows the basics of the rig and the final rig is a separate component from the skeleton, thus avoiding its participation in the export.

It may seem difficult for beginners, do you think I should make a text document in English to help figure it out?
