My team just complimented me for giving good pull request comments

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 10:41 AM PDT

In retro today my team complimented me on my code comments, specifically that I make it a point to mention when I think the way they solved a problem was great, not only when I think something needs changing. I'm glowing. I can scarcely think of any professional compliment I'd rather receive.

Just wanted to share. Hope y'all are having a pleasant Friday.

    The worst client ever.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 10:14 AM PDT

Have you ever spent what felt like a lifetime building a very detailed and beautiful e-commerce store with a mix of drop-shipping and local products for a client. One who wanted several design changes over and over?

And then you go to bed, wake up and their entire site is destroyed because they wanted to play around in Wordpress?

    That client is my mom.

She destroyed the site and didn't say anything. I had to find out on my own.

I didn't know where else to bitch about this. So here I am. It should be common sense, but remember to tell clients "DONT TOUCH ANYTHING!"

To self-taughts who learned from home, how was your journey ?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 12:55 PM PDT

I'm dabbling into web design and front-end development. I learn alone by youtube tutorials and coding myself. How was your journey when you started learning from home alone ?

    - Do you have a college degree ?

    - Best resources to learn ? (except youtube)

    - Will I struggle to find a job without a college degree ?

    - How and what to practice ?

    - Can I get a job for at least 6-9 months ?

    Thanks in advance!

Hello I am a Flutter Developer looking to enter the African Mobile Business Market in all African Countries, what are the most useful languages to know in your experience? (I'm a linguist)

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 02:15 PM PDT

So I grew up bilingual in spanish and english in the US this has jump started an immensely easy deep dive into northern and southern european languages.

Now at 27 after 10 years of language learning I can comfortably communicate in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and German. Currently I am intermediate level in Arabic and am loving how all words are connected by common roots and how easy communication is and its not as complex as english grammar, you basically say what you mean directly.

Now with Arabic I know northern africa and the middle east opens up for business, English and Portuguese in the South and in the West French helps a lot!

It seems as though east africa is dominated by Swahili (kiswahili) so I may be learning that after fluency in Arabic.

Can you guys think of any other languages that really help with business in Africa based on your experience? Thanks!

    What a shame, Safari

    What a shame, Safari

Flexbox gap is not supported on Safari; something that has been in Chrome since July 2020 and on Firefox since October 2018.

"Surprising" for a company that deems itself to be at the "edge of technology". Safari is basically the new Internet Explorer at this point.

Removing a class in vanilla JS

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 02:54 PM PDT

Having a button remove a class from an element, which seems to work because when I console.log the element's class list, the removed class is no long there. But in the inspector, I can see it being removed, then the class gets added immediately after being removed. I have no idea what could be causing this and could use some help, I'm about to lose it

What do you do when random recruiters message you for a project?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 08:20 AM PDT

It has happened a few times. They messgae me on linkdin. I usually dont answer because there are always quite a few things running through my mind like:

What if i cant solve this random project? Its a possibility. I never know if i will be tasked with something extremely hard. Working on an old project at work right now i feel like im barely keeping up.

How long will it take? I already work full-time and dont feel like i could put that many hours into it. Any attempt at giving an estimate will be wrong, every dev knows that.

What do i do if i started the project but then find out its out of my skill level?

I guess this is just how it is for people who work freelance?

After i started working at a real company and not doing "just" school work, i feel like every real project is so huge. Things always take longer than what you are used to. Ive worked frontend and i wouldt be able to create a custom backend. I know some PHP and SQL for backend but i dont think anyone uses PHP without a framework. I know js/js frameworks and firebase but firebase isent as flexible as a custom backend.

I know how long it can take to deal with stuff like authentication, user permissions, error handling etc. Working on "real" projects always have to be done properly and take more time.

What if i cant finish by a deadline? I probably wont get paid more if i spend more than agreed amount of time

Do you take on or avoid when people message you for a project? It seems like this is more suited towards people who choose to work freelance, as opposed to people who already work full-time. Perhaps people with more than a few months of experience.

What framework/libraries have you found to work best for making internal tools

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 04:07 PM PDT

Hello! I'm looking to make web-based internal tools for our game project. We are looking to make control panels and other stuff that integrate with our CI/CD setup and our cloud services provider.

What framework (or combination of libraries) have you found to work best for this kind of thing? We are looking for speed of development and quality. We are aware that we could be sacrificing visual design and customizability.

I tried a drag & drop web app called Retool, but I didn't feel like I was saving any time, so I would prefer to code them instead.

Is it a good idea to make a website from an HTML template without much coding experience?

I have almost no website coding experience, so would it be difficult to make a website using an HTML template? I know there might be a learning curve, but I am willing do to some learning.

    Web Hosting option?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 07:52 AM PDT

    Hello all.
So I own a small web design agency that until recently only really made 3 or 4 websites a year it was the smallest part of our agency but thanks to covid we have seen a huge boom and are now doing almost 9 a month although at a price far to cheap :(

My question is around hosting for the demo sites. My agency works under a no commitment setup so clients don't pay until the site is 100% finished on our demo area where we then transfer it in 72hours or less to their hosting provider/plan.

Problem is I currently use a wordpress multisite install on a cpanel VPS to do this as mentioned it was a small part of our company before but now that soloution is just not great.

I did think about buying a physicall server for our office and using something like xampp to just use a nice windows setup as it would be super easy for us to manage everything and archive content etc...

Mostly looking for ideas and discusion on this, Price is a big factor, we are currently doing sites at cost due to covid and wanting to help businesses get back on their feet so money is an issue, some clients we are even losing money :( but my town has been hit hard by covid.

I baysically have a max budget of £1000 ( $1,374.00 usd) and that is for a 12 month period.

How do things like spotify download songs in an instant?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 02:50 PM PDT

So im trying to make a spotify clone using a python wrapper of the spotify web api then using spotify-dl to download the actuall mp3 from a link. And with average internet speeds it takes maybe 5 seconds to download a 3 minutes song.

So how does the actual spotify just play the song right when i press play and doesnt wait 5 seconds to download? Does it not download or what?

What actually is React and what can one do with it / use it for?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 02:47 PM PDT

So far I've got a pretty good understanding of HTML, CSS and some basic JavaScript to build some things that I am pretty proud of, nothing major though mind you. I understand that to 'do well' in front end development, having non-static skills is kind of beneficial.

Final small question; is there another similar sort of thing that I should perhaps learn beforehand?

(Sorry if react is not the right thing to be talking about or if this makes little to no sense)

I made this Spotify Profile App using React, Express, Tailwind and Spotify API. It lets you know your most favourite songs and artists on Spotify, get song recommendations based on mood and genre. And much more. Links in comments.

Wondering if im in the wrong job

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 02:13 AM PDT

ive been making websites for 10 years across wordpress/umbraco/etc, mostly on the frontend but i also gradually grew toward what people used to call full-stack in that sector

Latest job, they want me writing web apps, the definition of front-end here is .net core c# with a react user interface, and the backend is either azure of aws. I came in with none of these skills on my resume, got in just by being nice and being able to talk about the last 10 years

Couple months in, deadlines hit and im behind, trying to pick this stuff up as quick as i can, and its working but not working quick enough. My last job were a bit more chilled on deadlines because the product was in-house, whereas now its external clients and tight budgets and they want quick turnarounds.

Im feeling stressed AF and thinking ive jumped in at the deepend far too quickly. Im worried i wont pass my probation and they are already getting on my ass about simple mistakes that the clients are noticing and im getting the kickback for asking for help too often. Some things you just cant google until you 'know what you dont know' but i feel pretty lost in the dark and im also full-time at home now, cant go bug someone in an office and have them point at things so i can go 'duuuhhh'

Anyone else had the same experience? would love to hear thoughts, should i bail? or just take some leave for stress? im thinking of starting to work on a backup plan for if i get let-go

    cheers

How To Score A Perfect 100 Google Lighthouse Score in Chrome Dev Tools

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 02:06 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I wrote a guide on how I built my site using NextJS and React, and how I got a perfect lighthouse score on it!, hope you like it!

I think that everyone should have a personal site, even if you're not in the development scene - and it doesn't always have to be a massive, expensive headache to set up. While this post is aimed at developers, it can still show you have to make site from the ground up, and completely for free!

    Should I abandon my domain?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I teach web development and I'm hoping my question falls under "Assistance Questions." I have a neglected blog and YouTube channel: "jeff.how". I'm not trying to be the next Bucky Robert's or anything but everything I've learned about web development came from free resources like his work and I genuinely want to contribute back.

This summer I plan to update my blog/channel with new content. But I'm wondering if I should reconsider my domain. I snagged a .how domain a while back but I'm worried it's, a) not taken seriously because it's not a ".com" and b) too generic a title.

In a sea of coding tutorials, I have my little brand out there. Changing my domain won't solve the main issue (inconsistent and sporadic content), but it's first one I'd like to address. What are your thoughts about non ".com" domains? Do they take a hit in terms of SEO? Is my domain lame and I should change it?

    Going to .NET from Node

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 03:00 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I'm currently thinking about broadening my skillset by learning .NET as most of the current job-openings in my area use .NET for the backend with a React/Vue frontend.

Currently I'm most comfortable with the MERN stack and I've never really touched C# outside of making some tiny projects many years ago. If I were to start learning .NET for backend services, should I start by brushing up on 'regular' c# or should my node/JS/TS knowledge be enough to dive straight into learning how to build backend APIs with .NET?

Thanks in advance, any courses (paid or otherwise) that will help with picking up .NET is highly appreciated.

    Stay safe!
