So, I'm a physicist with experience programming in c++ , Fortran and python but for scientific purposes (ie physical simulations, data analysis, scientific animations, etc). So while I'm certainly familiar with programming, I'm assuming programming for games must be a different story. Sometimes I realise an item is useless and I never take it, or I take another instead of it 100%. How do you balance it out? How difficult would it be to remake Silent Hill (Ps1)? Posted: 26 Apr 2021 05:23 AM PDT Let me first off just say that I love the Silent Hill series (at least the first 3). Ever since I was young it has always fascinated me. I've always wanted to see more of that universe with the vision of the first 3 games. I've always wanted to honor it in some way with a fan artwork that captures my love and respect for it. So I've been recently thinking what the game would look like if it was remade with modern graphics. So I come here with questions seeking advice on how to accomplish this project. Is it possible for one person to do this? I know that the game is not as complex as modern games so does this make things easier? Legally, how is this project possible? I know I wouldn't be able to sell the work. This does not matter to me. It would be a labor of love. To finish it would be a reward in and of itself but I worry about the legal ramifications. I wouldn't mind finding other people to work as a team member on this project and if I do, how many people do you think I would need to work with to finish this? Im a single dev on a passion game I've been working on for close to a year now and my god is it just difficult. Not just physically, having to push myself to sculpt and draw and teach myself new things is hard, but also mentally. Making interchangeable equipment sets in a 2D sprite game Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:13 AM PDT Has anybody crossed this bridge of making 2D equipment assets? I'm working on a game in python using pygame, and I want to be able to add equipment to the game. The way I see it, I have two options. 1.) Draw a ton of images with different weapons and actions (A crap ton of work) 2.) Draw a ton of images doing actions without armor, swords, etc. And have separate image actions for each set of equipment, swords and whatever else I intend to add. This would add complications to how I animate stuff though. Has anybody done anything like this before? Am I missing something, either way it seems like I'm looking at a metric ton of work to accomplish this since I've never done it before. Am I missing anything in my thinking on how to do this? I really would like this to be a simpler task, but I can't think of a way to do it. [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 26 Apr 2021 12:01 PM PDT I basically need to make a dumbed down 3D modelling software (map editor) I will build something like crocotile but different (more dumbed down than crocotile) I know a ton of game engines already but maybe someone knows something that i'm not aware of and suits my needs better Heaps.io crashes on my graphics card so i will avoid it for now My target platforms are: Linux, MacOS (in the future) and Windows For stable i mean that i hate driver crashes and i may need to render big scenes I don't really care about the programming language as long as is fast enough (therefore Python is banned, java C# C++ and some other are probably a good option in my opinion, i'd like to be able to use kotlin instead of java for java game engines) I'd also love to have a good documentation if possible (ogre3D has a very bad one in my opinion, or i'm just dumb, if i'm dumb give me an easy to use Graphic engine please) I don't need a UI or being too much cuddled, i'm asking this question just to avoid to build it myself using opengl and discovering that there was something that good already available (and i also fear to have to debug problems that do not exist on my graphic card) [link] [comments] | ||
What's the most enjoyable aspect of game dev for you? Posted: 26 Apr 2021 04:29 AM PDT I was just reminiscing about growing up with Klik & Play and RPG Maker. I had a lot of fun with them just as a kind of creative toolbox. I think what I most enjoyed about it at the time was just the feeling of creating a world and seeing it come together. They taught me the basics of scripting but I am more of a traditional artist than a programmer. I wanted to just ask you all a few questions:

Its one of those airplane games that you shoot things in a 2D, top-down scroller fashion (ie. Raptor, Galaga). I'm giving it a directional pad instead of finger to screen moving, because i like seeing the plane instead of it being hidden under my finger. Long story short game industry in city I live… doesn't exist, and overall it's not much better in other regions of country (pretty much only mobile games). So I tried applying to Larian, but it appeared they doesn't hire without citizenship. Is it common rule for industry or is it more about specific country laws? Would appreciate any information. Posted: 25 Apr 2021 01:11 PM PDT I heard from someone that the average earnings for a game after 4 years in development is 1000 usd, which is a skewed number when you think about how AAA companies push this number up. So in summary this seems to be a horrible way to make a living, probably better of picking bottles on the street. From what I gather you should only be doing this is you have a genuine passion, or treat it as a hobby. Otherwise it would be a fool's errand? Ps. Design feasibility for beginner developer. Posted: 26 Apr 2021 02:43 AM PDT I am just getting into game development (learning game maker studio to begin with, as it fits what I'm wanting to do for now), but have a few questions about the actual design process before I decide on what I want to try to make first. I understand the design process is long and difficult, and since I'm doing this solo and brand new, i expect it to be even more challenging. That being said, I do have three different stylistic choices for what I want to eventually work towards as a game. The first is a side scrolling action game, in a metroidvania style, with possible rpg elements. The second is a sort of stealth action/puzzle platformer game with a heavy narrative focus. The third is a isometric rpg (along the lines of the older final fantasy games). I know each is different, and have their own challenges. I don't want to dive too deep over my head and end up losing the motivation to create by picking a game design that's just too complex for a beginner, so I'm hoping you all can maybe shed some light on which of the three would be the most realistic for a beginner game developer to make. I do intend to make all three in time, assuming I can conquer the process of making the first. (Just some asides, all three would be done in pixel art, which I am also creating. I'm not particularly worried about design/creation time, as this is mostly being done as a passion project. And finally, I am also going through other game development forums and articles to learn more about how to make a good game and things I need to think about for level design, game play loops, and the like.) Rotate PS4 Rotation axis counter clockwise. Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:29 AM PDT Rotate my Analog input -20 Degrees. Okay so I've been trying to figure this out and haven't been able to. It's kinda hard to explain as well. The way I hold my controller by habit makes me use my analog stick slightly counter clockwise. When I want to push straight forward for whatever reason, I push my analog stick in a left diagonal position, when trying to input a forward action. I don't know if it's possible, but is there anyway could shift my rotational axis by -20? Seems to be a topic I can't find anywhere, so wondering if anyone here would know since I play Rocket League on pc, but I use DS4. Any information would be extremely helpful. [link] [comments] |
