What do you call it when games unload things you aren't directly looking at?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 10:44 AM PDT

I'm not a game dev so I don't need to know specifics like code and such. I wanna research how games load and unload stuff that is visible to the player.

Edit: Thank you to everyone who answered x3

Solo dev being okay to buy outsourced art. I'm just curious to hear what you think.

Also, I've heard a lot about StarDew valley already, so please don't count that.

Trying to understand ECS, could a Input manager be a system?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 08:31 AM PDT

I have been thinking about having a bit of fun designing a game engine. I really like the ECS pattern, the problem is... I have no idea how to do anything a bit more complex than moving cubes (thousands of them of course) around.

    3 specific questions...

    • Could input processing be made as a system? How would other systems be able to react to the input?
    • If I have a settings window that changes the graphics settings, how do I inform the renderer about the change?
    • UI in ecs sounds like hell. Is it?

Are there any games with gameplay that constantly changes according to the story?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 11:56 AM PDT

(I'm not talking about games with quick time events or something likewise)

So for example let's say you have a story where one moment you're trying to fly an aircraft, the next you're cooking a meal and the next you're having a snowball fight. Has such a game been made? I also wonder whether or not such a thing would work well as the player would constantly be introduced to new mechanics and can't really develop any longterm skills (unless you'd try to have a unifying thread in the varying types of gameplay), I'd really love to hear what you think, thanks for your time.

How to make in-game events (like in CK2 or FTL) and encounters interesting even after many playthroughs?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 11:45 AM PDT

So, I'm making a turn-based roguelike game with focus on exploration of procedurally generated world.

The exploration will focus on gathering resources, etc. much like in Heroes of Might and Magic. However, I want the player to be also able to experience random events and find random encounters, e.g. some NPCs or abandoned villages, etc.

However, I know these types of things get usually quickly boring cuz there is only infinite amount of them and the events/encounters start repeating.

So is it possible to make to such events/encounters interesting even after many playthroughs?

Email from Yodo1 ‘Question about the ads in Game Name’

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 11:14 AM PDT

Hi everyone, about 4 years ago I published a small game to various app stores.

I haven't actually published anything since, but I do know my game still gets a tiny number of downloads still, I'm talking maybe a few a week so nothing big, and although I have ads on it, I don't ever get any income (though settings and stuff may have changed and may be my own fault due to lack of updates).

I got an email from Legion@ yodo1.com with the name Greg Yuetter. I was just gonna ignore it but out of curiosity I'm wondering if this is genuine or not? And if so, is it worth responding? I only made this game as a learning experience more than anything, and the game is nothing complicated at all.

(I removed my games name and replaced it with Game Name)

    Here is the email:

Is increasing your game's revenue a priority right now?

My name is Greg, monetization specialist at Yodo1, one of the largest mobile gaming companies in Asia (Rodeo Stampede, Crossy Road, Ski Safari).

My monetization team decided to take a look at Game Name and its performance. Based on our experience optimizing thousands of other games, we have some ideas for increasing revenue and enhancing the player experience. We believe your game is a great fit for partnership.

Would you have time within the next week for a quick Zoom call? It would be great to connect and learn about your challenges and goals. You can book a time here.

We look forward to collaborating with you and growing together!

Thanks, Greg Yeutter Product Manager, Yodo1 +1 (856) 305-9617 Want to connect? You can find a time here.

I am looking to interview a professional level designer in the industry

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 10:34 AM PDT

I'm a student in a game design course and I want to become a level designer when I graduate. I was hoping that I could interview some professional lead level designers to learn what they are looking for and how I can improve my resume and portfolio. If any professionals read this I would love just 30 minutes of your time to ask a few questions I have about getting a career started in the industry after college. It would really be a huge help to me.

What is the most efficient way to render a big dynamic voxel mesh?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 06:10 AM PDT

I'm currently working on making some dynamic voxel grass (think small pillars) in Unity. I want to be able to add and remove layers to each individual grass entity in runtime.

What would the best approach to this be?

I've been think of making it one cube each and just scaling it, however, I want different layers of the grass to have different colors.

Here is an example of the mechanic using gizmos:

What terrain asset does POLYGON utilize?

How do I get into game level design?

    Posted: 20 Mar 2021 02:21 AM PDT

I have been passionate about level design for the better part of my life. I have spent thousands of hours creating/editing maps in Halo, MOWAS2, Far Cry series, Arma 2/3, CSGO, and possibly more. This is something I have been wanting to do on a professional level for a very long time. I have tried dabbling with Unity and Unreal but I can never get into it because of a variety of reasons/excuses. I need advice on how I should approach the game dev scene, and what my portfolio should look like. Any and all advice/concerns are appreciated.
