Google domain price increased 100x AFTER I bought (to renew) Help!

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 11:55 AM PDT

I have 9 google domains and I have never had an issue like this happen to me, and I was wondering if anyone else had some insight into this.

    I bought a domain for my gaming group for $12/year: https://i.imgur.com/ZtRq6yJ.png (glue.fans).

Then I noticed by chance that the price to renew had skyrocketed from $12 to $1080: https://i.imgur.com/6Ole0rN.png

The scary thing is that this price was automatically put into my auto renew and I received NO communication about the issue. I contacted google support and they said they are unable to control the price of domains, but I already purchased this domain and I am concerned if all domains can be subject to random 100x increases in price! I don't want to be charged $1000 for a meme domain. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

I created a web-app to demonstrate the biases and predictability of our world

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 08:44 AM PDT

I was totally astonished after watching The Zipf Mystery video by Vsauce, after hours of research on this phenomenon I found out that there are many other empirical laws which predict the behaviour of the real world.

Thought I could put all of this on an interactive website, so check it out - Numbers Prophecy

How do you find freelance work as a webdev?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 04:29 AM PDT

I'm transitioning away from the copy-writing side of web design to the programming side. With copy-writing, I'd get my clients through either word-of-mouth or cold-emailing - I started in 2005, so it was a different world back then and cold emails worked.

I'm just wondering how people get freelance work for webdev. Are there any platforms that are particularly good?

I'm in the UK, but I guess people from all over the world would like to know the answers to this question too.

I used "useContext" to create the cart. and all of the prices descriptions and images are ready to go in a js object i just need to pass that as my checkout to the backend in node

github: https://github.com/nicolasgomeztoua/Boostify (travel to src and pages for the cart component)

heroku: https://boostifywalid.herokuapp.com/ (main CTA scroll down and just add to cart)

First job offer, what do I do?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:31 PM PDT

I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say but I have recently received a job offer from a pretty big company. I'm 17, and think I'm decent at web dev and infrastructure, but I am worried that I will disappoint and underperform (due to lack of professional experience).

They reached out to me asking me to work, and have asked what my rate is ideally.

I've never really doubted myself until now, when I actually have to prove what I can do. I know that the only way to get better is to try and get more experience, but am still worried.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do and what rates I should ask for?

Devs who work with a product/dev team, do you use an off the shelf component library or maintain your own? Advice for working with product/design?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 03:55 PM PDT

We are a growing startup. Before our first designer and PM were hired, the dev team chose a component library that was an implementation of a design language, called Ant Design.

Since that time, we have hired a few designers, a few PMs, and a formal VP of Product.

The dev team and product/design are starting to have some friction. The design team has created their own design system and are designing components with that. We then take those mocks and try and tweak AntD to match.

AntD does have built in customizations in the form of global Less variables you can set and through props on the components.

However, not everything can be customized that way and match mocks. So after that, we have to write classes that override the AntD styles. Sometimes it really feels like you are fighting with AntD. Changing styles can have unintended side-effects somewhere else.

None of this is the worst thing in the world, but it is causing frustration. We are trying to ship as fast as possible. Product wants their vision implemented. I am of the opinion of we already have a design language, let's just use vanilla AntD and not waste time fighting with AntD to match mocks.

I doubt Product will accept that. So part of me wants to start rolling our own library (starting small and side-by-side with AntD) so we have the freedom to more closely implement Products vision. But, I fear the cost of maintaining our own library.

Any advice? What has worked for you?

What all do I need to learn to create a fully functional blogging website?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 03:43 PM PDT

Me and and a friend of mine are looking to create a blogging website. We both are pursuing CS major so we have experience with programming but not a lot with web dev. We've created some beginner websites and know basic HTML,CSS,JS and Flask.

What all should we learn to start building our website? ( Currently we're thinking about React.js and Django but don't have any experience with either. ) Any tips/recommendations?

95% of the time writing a test is testing if that test works, not testing if the thing I'm testing works

    Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:34 PM PDT

Seriously, why the hell is implementing test suites such a pain in the arse? I was trying to test my API using Mocha and Chai, and I spent like 2 hours trying to troubleshoot the errors. It's constantly saying like "message port already in use", or like "typeorm connection not found", or when I established a connection to the database it throws "entity not found". I just gave up in the end trying to implement tests. Does anyone have a similar experience?

How does your team collaboratively solve software problems?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:44 PM PDT

Since Covid, most tech companies have been working remotely. However, I've noticed that when a member of the team runs into an issue, they typically get stuck on an issue and asking for help can get difficult.

So, how do you collaboratively solve or share knowledge within your organisation?

Some questions about the Indeed Job Search API using Javascript?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:14 PM PDT

I am a complete novice when working with APIs, but I understand how to more or less access very simple/standard "tutorial" APIs via JSON data. I'm making a job search website as a personal project, and I am visualizing my job-search page to essentially import the Job Title, description, and employer search results from Indeed, but styled to display cohesively in my website based on user input.

My first question is, is something like this possible?

If so, do I need to familiarize myself with another language or node.js to move forward with this? Thanks for your time, most of this is likely beyond my skills but I'm looking to see if I can get by just using Javascript to complete this project.

Any good solutions for interactive plots/apps besides dash + Plotly?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 09:28 AM PDT

I am working on adding interactive plots/apps to my website. I found that Plotly.js by itself might not be enough as I want to add sliders and inputs allowing the user to change the data being plotted.

Seems like you need to use dash + Plotly for interactive plots. dash looks great but I'm a little hesitant to use it since my website is pretty lightweight right now and dash seems like a super heavy dependency requiring a separate server instance.

I eventually want to have more complicated plots/apps with heatmaps, fancy 3D plots, etc. and dash + Plotly is the only thing I found that would help me build those. So maybe it's worth biting the bullet and figuring out how to embed dash apps into my website?

If it helps to explain what I'm trying to do, here's an example of a plot showing compound interest over time that I'm trying to turn into an interactive plot/app so users can play around with changing the starting amount, interest rate, etc.: https://projectlovelace.net/problems/compound-interest/

How is this website's background made?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 01:10 AM PDT

For a personal project I wanted to emulate some of the best designs I found around the web.

Came across this website (ironvelvet.studio) which has a beautiful fire effect as a background.

The website uses Three.js, could that be the framework they're using to get that effect? I'm not an expert with it but how do you think they're achieving the "glaring" effect of the fire?

What do you like & dislike about Web Dev? And do you consider it a Creative Field?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 08:32 AM PDT

    Hello,

After a year in healthcare, three waves of a pandemic and a cyber attack i am burnt out and contemplating a career shift into Web Dev.

There is a rather respected bootcamp at Concordia University that I am contemplating taking. I really love UX / UI. The mix of logic and creativity . And I would like to be able to manifest& code my designs.. That being said, I imagine the job I would get might not be so peaches and rainbows. Might be boring repeptitive tasks etc.

So my question is , what is your experience working in web dev like? What are the things you like and dislike? And are you able to be creative in your work ?

    Thank you in advance,
