I just wanted to thank this amazing community for helping me getting started into the journey that is the programming world. I am so happy!

EDIT: Sorry for not replying. I've been celebrating. I promise I'll respond to every single message in the morning

How was your first day as a junior dev?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:26 AM PST

I'm starting tomorrow. Excited and scared at the same time.

What if they ask something simple that I don't know... it's killing me

EDIT #1: Thank you for your responses! I get it. Ask all the questions I have, try to figure it out by myself for some time. Admit that I don't know something rather than lie that I do and let down entire team.

To be honest you gave me some positive energy. I'd like to have coworkers like you. 💪🏽

"Automate the Boring Stuff with Python" online course is free to sign up for the next few days with code FEB2021FREE

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:50 AM PST

https://inventwithpython.com/automateudemy (This link will automatically redirect you to the latest discount code.)

You can also click this link or manually enter the code: FEB2021FREE

    https://www.udemy.com/course/automate/?couponCode=FEB2021FREE

This promo code works until the 4th (I can't extend it past that). Sometimes it takes an hour or so for the code to become active just after I create it, so if it doesn't work, go ahead and try again a while later. I'll change it to FEB2021FREE2 in three days.

Udemy has changed their coupon policies, and I'm now only allowed to make 3 coupon codes each month with several restrictions. Hence why each code only lasts 3 days. I won't be able to make codes after this period, but I will be making free codes next month. Meanwhile, the first 15 of the course's 50 videos are free on YouTube.

You can also purchase the course at a discount using my code JAN2021CODE or FEB2021CODE (try both if one doesn't work) or clicking https://inventwithpython.com/automateudemy to redirect to the latest discount code. I have to manually renew this each month (until I get that automation script done). And the cheapest I can offer the course is about $16 to $18. (Meanwhile, this lets Udemy undercut my discount by offering it for $12, and I don't get the credit for those referral signups. Blerg.)

Frequently Asked Questions: (read this before posting questions)

    • This course is for beginners and assumes no previous programming experience, but the second half is useful for experienced programmers who want to learn about various third-party Python modules.
    • If you don't have time to take the course now, that's fine. Signing up gives you lifetime access so you can work on it at your own pace.
    • This Udemy course covers roughly the same content as the 1st edition book (the book has a little bit more, but all the basics are covered in the online course), which you can read for free online at https://inventwithpython.com
    • The 2nd edition of Automate the Boring Stuff with Python is free online: https://automatetheboringstuff.com/2e/
    • I do plan on updating the Udemy course for the second edition, but it'll take a while because I have other book projects I'm working on. Expect that update to happen in mid-2021. If you sign up for this Udemy course, you'll get the updated content automatically once I finish it. It won't be a separate course.
    • It's totally fine to start on the first edition and then read the second edition later. I'll be writing a blog post to guide first edition readers to the parts of the second edition they should read.
    • I wrote a blog post to cover what's new in the second edition
    • You're not too old to learn to code. You don't need to be "good at math" to be good at coding.
    • Signing up is the first step. Actually finishing the course is the next. :) There are several ways to get/stay motivated. I suggest getting a "gym buddy" to learn with. Check out /r/ProgrammingBuddies

Get off Reddit. Get back to work and code some more ‍‍‍‍‍

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:01 PM PST

Just a friendly reminder to limit your lurking, scrolling, reading everyone's stories and go about the business of creating your own success story.

Limit your time scrolling through for your breaks but it's easy to get sucked into hours of distractions aka Reddit instead of building your projects.

You're gonna do great but get back to work.

    Good luck! 🍀👍🏾

Is it possible for me to become self taught software developer and freelancer?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:13 PM PST

I am 25 and I start to worry about my future career. Currently, I have a stable job that works like a clerk.

But I am very confused because I don't want to spend my life working like this without getting any skills.

I do have a CS degree however my programming skills are shit, and all the courses in the Uni I just got pass, and until now I still have no idea how I got the degree....

I have been thinking about becoming freelancer software developer for a few months. But I don't think my skills and experience are enough for me to do it... I have visited some platforms like Upwork, Fiverr...etc.I am quite interested in the posts about mobile apps like flutter, so I get myself to learn flutter and make an Todo likes apps(still in progress, I am very slow on solving my programming tasks..), however I still have to work every day so I can only spend around 2hours per day for me to do this.....

Can anyone has any suggestions for me?And sorry i am quite new to Reddit, I dunno is this a right place to ask..

What is the benefit of doing coding problems on CodeWars, LeetCode, etc?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 04:45 PM PST

I am currently on the learning path to become an ASP.NET MVC developer.

I wanted to know if there are any benefits to doing coding problems on websites like CodeWars and LeetCode. I asked a programmer friend I know, and he said that doing such problems would not help me in improving the skills required for my job.

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks in advance.

Having a hard time on first developer job.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:18 PM PST

Hello guys. I've just started on my first job as a junior developer. My programming background was only from the training. I've learned the basics in a month but in the project, it is really different. I can't seem to get the gist of it all. I was given a coding test when I onboarded the project and it took everything I had and I just progressed because of the help of the senior devs on the team. Is it really natural to get lost at the beginning, to feel really ignorant and struggle so hard? I'm starting to feel like I'm not suited for this.. Any insights will be much appreciated.

Looking for a budding web dev to practice teaching a lesson on the DOM on 2/2/21

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:01 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I am a recent bootcamp grad, and I have an interview tomorrow (2/2/21) and I'm looking for someone who would like to know more about the DOM and some basic JavaScript methods to practice my teaching skills. I am interviewing for an instructor position at another bootcamp. I am happy to order you lunch or similarly compensate you!

I know it's last minute, but my interview got pushed forward from Friday. Please DM me or comment if most or all of the following requirements apply:

Need to know: -HTML: basics, tags, syntax, etc. -CSS: common selectors and properties -JavaScript: basic syntax, variable assignment, basic data types, and basic if/else logic and simple loops -Git: how to use GitHub Available between 9:30a-2p CST (I am based in Austin, TX)

I would love if this could help someone who is learning to code, knows the basics and is looking to learn more about real-world web development.

It would help me a lot to practice with someone who is in the process of learning, as you might have some awesome questions that a more experienced dev wouldn't.

Thanks for reading and please comment/DM me if you are interested and available for 30 min between the times listed above. I'll set up a meeting link and share with you privately.

Is Python a better language for learning general programming than JavaScript for someone who is starting from scratch?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:54 PM PST

Hello learners, I know JavaScript is the most popular language everyone is learning for front-end dev right now. What are anyone's thoughts on starting with Python? I heard it's an easier language to learn, so is it still a good idea for Python to be your 1st language?

I saw 2 ways to initialize a for loop -

    like this:

    int i; for (i = 0; ...){...}

    And like this:

    for (int i = 0; ...) {...}

What is the better way to do it, and why?

Beginner friendly alternative to CS50 (Harvard)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:51 PM PST

Any suggestions on an alternative course to CS50 (Harvard). I attempted the course earlier in 2020 but gave up at problem set 3 or 4 due to difficulty.

Are there other similar courses that may be more user friendly to a pure beginner?

    Thanks.

Anyone looking for a group to start learning Full Stack Development

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:07 PM PST

Looking to see if anyone else starting out in learning some full stack skills is interested in having a group to possibly make the process a little easier. Graduated with a CS degree couple years ago but graduated without actually having learned a whole lot and have been in more of a networking role since. Would like to start learning some full stack stuff on the side and curious if anyone else is in the same boat. Let me know if you're interested.

    Valentine’s Day

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 10:50 AM PST

Hey guys! I'm a total newbie with programming, and I was hoping to get some tips. I wanted to program a simple command that when you click on it, a heart pops up, and then text appears that says "I love you". My boyfriend is a master at programming, so I thought I'd give it a try to surprise him for Valentine's 😊

Does anyone know easy-to-learn Java game libraries, or just any Java libraries that make it easy to start making programs?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:23 PM PST

I'm taking a Java class in school, and I have dabbled previously in other languages a bit, but I never committed or anything. I have recently really wanted to make a game, as I have a pretty decent idea of how to code in Java, I just can't find a library that is that easy to start developing with, or at least even with a decent tutorial to get me started. Does anyone know any good Java development libraries(for graphics) that has good documentation and is beginner friendly? Thanks for any input you may have!

Need advice from someone who has completed a master’s in CS

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:50 PM PST

So I am trying to apply to a master's program in computer science. I graduated with a bachelor's in an unrelated field and am trying to transition into the field. I have been taking many cs prerequisites classes as a result. I am primarily looking at programs in CA, but I am open to other school suggestions. If anyone has any helpful advice and have been in my position, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, how many programs should I apply to?
