Any good place to search for 2D game assets?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:33 AM PST

Hi everyone! I am working on a 2D fighting game for my university project. And for that I need the assets for the characters with the fighting animations. I have searched itch.io, unity assets store, gamedevmarket, even did a google images search for some spritesheets, but couldn't find a nice 2D assets with the animations frames. I am very much in need of those, and they can be in any artstyle, except for pixel art or chibi-like comic style, because the game is really focused on the combat. Maybe there are places I have missed? Or maybe there are some of you who did such games in the past and could share the assets? I only need it for the project presentation, and this game will hardly see light. Appreciate any help!

P.S. my game is desert-themed, so I am also not searching for very modern-looking characters or ninjas.

P.S.S. I also don't mind paying so if there is paid asset store, it is completely fine.

What are the ways Landscaping/Level Editors are done in games, and How are they done?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:30 AM PST

    Consider This example here

I noticed this "brush" method is used in a lot of games, even to this day. What's the technology called in technical terms? What's the circle that acts as the brush center called. How does it work?

As a side question, are there any technologies that are replacing this design approach? My attempts to search up any have come up short.

P.S.: A research/academic paper on this technology would also be appreciated

I'll be grateful for any and all answers!

    Looking for scripting language

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:08 AM PST

We are looking for a programming language that ticks these boxes to use as a scripting language in an engine.

[ ] Easy to use and learn [ ] Have decent ecosystem & good tooling story [ ] Be compiled for strong typing and proper error reporting [ ] either compile directly to machine code and can be loaded as dll or has efficient VM [ ] Has proper built in support for embedding to avoid hacking it into the engine.

    Please make suggestings.

The engine is currently using TypeScript for scripting this is not an option.

    UE4 Creating reactive elements?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 10:53 AM PST

TLDR: Looking for tips for setting up my base game system of throwing out an elemental potion, and having elemental interactions.

I am trying to get off the ground with a prototype idea and I cant seem to find a single tutorial on this subject. How would one go about creating a system of reactive elements, that is expandable? An obvious example would be the recent 'Spellbreak.' My game idea revolves around throwing various potions, and to start off I want to keep things simple: a fire potion and a poison potion. Touching these elments causes a specific effect such as a poisoned status effect. When two elements touch they interact, such as fire exploding poison. Any tips, advice, or resources would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

What kind of engine or tools Being a DIK or Milfy city games use for their graphics?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:40 AM PST

Hi everyone I expect you are doing great,
I recently discover these visual novel games and their characters graphics really impressed me for its realism and how well the human skin textures were made, do you know by chance what kind of engine or tools the developer might have used for making the game, I am planning on making a similar game and that would help me a lot.

Here is the LINK of the Being a DIK author's Patreon where you can watch some video examples.

I can't get movement to work in unity. I have already tried both the rigidbody and character controller techniques

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:18 AM PST

I mean, in THEORY it does work, but in practice, whenever I rotate on the x axis, the forward and back wards buttons (W and S) switch with the side buttons (A and D), so that when I move on the x axis, I end up having to use the A key to go forward and the D key to go backwards, and these inputs change depending on how I rotate.

I have tried both a rigid body technique and a character controller, and neither have changed anything. My movement script is attached to the player, not the camera.

here are the tutorials I have followed:

Questions regarding 3D modeling for Video Games

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:10 AM PST

    Hi all!

I have about 2 years of experience with 3DS Max and about 3 weeks experience with Substance Painter. I graduate with a degree in 3D arts and animation in March, but honestly, I don't think it has prepared me well for my chosen career. I've always wanted to make video games, so I have some questions:

Is there a certain way I should be modeling? A certain workflow? As in: should I be concerned with getting all quads on every mesh, or should I focus more on the forms and not worry about triangles or N-gons?

Should I completely master 3D modeling, solely focusing on that, or should I split my time between learning an engine and practice modeling?

Is the substance suite well suited for video game work flows? If not, what should I do? I have done traditional photoshop texturing, but I strongly dislike that work flow.

What engine should I start using/learning? I have been pointed to the obvious two: Unity and Unreal. I don't really have a preference as to either, but which one is easier to learn or has more documentation?

Should I try my hand at modding first? Any recommendations for games?

Do you have recommendations for tutorials that cover (from absolute 0 to 100) the entire work flow of making games? Particularly in the modeling to engine space, as I don't have coding experience at all. Free is absolutely preferred if possible, as I am a poor college student/ starving artist.

Figuring out where to go next has been a very frustrating process and I am worried I won't ever figure it out. I can't really find an answer out there. So, I thought I would ask around. Also, just general 3D art/ freelance tips are appreciated as well!

    Thank you ahead of time!

    Change of career.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:01 AM PST

So last year fucked everything up. I am a chef and I lost my job due to the virus. Basically my boss fired me because I had the highest salary and he could not afford to pay me ( yea I know he's a fucker). After like months and 3 jobs that I changed I couldn't stay in a job cause either they couldn't pay in a lockdown scenario, they would give me 500€ per month (which for me is nothing compared with the experience that I have) and mostly because they would close for winter time since the gov did a horrible job.

Anyway now I'm going to learn how to be a game developer. I have already started learning c++ and I think it's for the best if I focus for the next year on that. I want in the future to learn about 3D graphics, animations and maybe some other stuff, but I'm not entirely sure what to do after/in the meantime of c++. I mean what courses should I do and the most important thing for me now is that I just turned 28 so I don't have time to lose.

Sorry for the long post but thanks in advance! Happy new year!

Using blender to design sprites for an isometric game?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:29 AM PST

Hello everyone, I'm just looking to get a little advice on something, and hopefully a nudge in the right direction.

What are some common ways that people design isometric buildings for 2D games? (some software examples, perhaps?).

Is it advisable to design 3D buildings in blender, and then produce isometric sprites from there?

    Thank you for your time!

A large part Godot's rendering code has been rewritten to be more cache and thread efficient, resulting in a very significant performance improvement when using very large amount of objects (dozens of thousands), as well as lots of lights.

Where can I find Fantasy ambient sounds, mostly nature related ones?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:18 AM PST

    Good day sirs and madams.

Where do you guys buy/download your ambient sounds? I'm interested in birdchirps, leaves rustling, rivers flowing etc. Maybe some blacksmith hammering and people chatting.

Free sound databases have many amateur recordings with crackling and many cars driving so that's not suitable for my game unfortunately.
