Do web developers have to manage the websites forever?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 09:41 AM PST

I have recently started freelancing in web development and backend development. One of my clients is asking me to constantly look after the website I created for them. Is it supposed to be that way?

Am I supposed to get paid for the maintenance too? We had a deal only for the creation and hosting of the website. Thanks in advance!

How to learn best and worst practices?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 09:41 AM PST

I've been doing web dev for two years and I feel pretty confident in my ability to create a good web page. But being self taught I just don't know best practices and if I'm using them, as well as equally important, bad practices to avoid. Thanks for any advice!

Understanding of terms "client-side rendering" and "server side rendering"

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 10:38 PM PST

From what I understand, the RENDERING process is always performed by the BROWSER, in the so-called "critical rendering path", where HTML documents and CSS files are parsed into DOM/CSSOM trees and then combined into a RENDER TREE, which is then RENDERED or "painted" by the browser.

So, I understand "rendering" and "painting" as synonyms, which can only be done by the browser.

So what exactly do we mean by "client-side rendering" and "server-side rendering"? These are just the formation of HTML documents, right? Why do we say rendering? It makes it so confusing to me.

I wanted to know if an open api for certain companies would allow me to access their live data free of charge? And how would i know what data I can use?

    &

If i wanted to show a music video from YouTube or a movie trailer from YouTube. On my app. How can I get permission to show a music artists video from YouTube for example on my app?

Best practices for authenticated pages: should I use Google.Analytics, something else or not applicable?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 01:28 PM PST

I am helping with a smallish webapp for business users. They are using RoR and have about 20 distinct "pages" (/urls).

Is it common practice to add something like GA to each page for UI metrics etc? Or would this be useful for public pages only?

Also, what would be alternatives — Heap, Mixpanel, something else?

Hi webdev! I wanted to participate in Showoff Saturday to share my first website / webapp. It is an event page for the community of Steamboat Springs. It contains user submitted events and the agility to sort and navigate through them.

This was a covid project and I really wanted to get my hands on some new technologies. I learned more about Docker, NGINX, Flask, APIs, and app sec.

Overall it was a great project and just wanted to share my events page. Let me know what ya think!

I love the idea of a fully static blogging website, where each post is just a static page essentially. Is this feasible at all?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 07:40 AM PST

I know how to build a basic static website using just HTML, CSS and some JS. And I realise that with a static website, you'd lose a lot of convenient features that a platform like WordPress could offer. For example when it comes to SEO plugins, updating old posts, search and category functionality. Let's say I'm fine with losing out on all of that for now, though.

However, the one thing which really puts a stop to this idea is caching. When adding new posts or updating old ones, the content needs to be refreshed for the user.

Is there a way to get around that?

Do I track cookies on the front end or back end when checking if a user is logged in?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 12:32 PM PST

    Front end - Nuxt/Vuex/Vue
    Back end - Flask

    Login steps -
    1. User enter username and password
    2. Values are sent to backend to check if user exists. If the user exists, it returns a JWT token to the front end
    3. Front end takes this JWT and saves it as a cookie

I'm stuck on how to track if the user is logged in. For example, Say I want the navigation bar, to "My Profile" instead of "Login" once they're logged in.

All I really need is a truth/false variable saying if the user is logged in and the user type. My website will have two types of users and it will show certain information depending on the type of user.

Do I have a function on the front end that checks for this on every page load or on the backend? I thought Vuex solved this issue but I didn't realize that the state gets wiped on a page refresh.

Note - this is app is SSR, not SPA.

Calling all opensource guru's, hobbyist for a open source project which aims to help cope with depression.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 03:36 PM PST

I made an app that helps to cope with depression. It's a simple app that helps you to talk with someone. We all know therapy is expensive and not everyone can afford it. In fact, people who don't make any money are the most depressed. People like me get anxiety attacks at random times like late at night and talking helps a lot. Booking an appointment randomly at midnight won't work. People are afraid to talk about their problems to their peers(family and friends) due to fear of being judged or sounding weak but yes they need someone to talk to.

Since this is purely a text-based chat application a person's identity is concealed and more serious one-to-one discussion happens. No memes, emoticons or image sharing. We don't need many permissions for the app.

I know this app feels like a suicide hotline but we would highly discourage such extreme cases and divert them to their respective hotlines.

This app simply has 2 roles one is for the talker and a listener. So it's basically uber to connect people who want to talk with people who want to listen. While respecting their anonymity.

Yes, this app attracts perverts and trolls but currently, we have phone number verification. I know it's not bulletproof proof but it's something. Have to research a lot on how to deal with these jerks without enforcing extreme moderation.

    Current situation.

The app did attract a lot of attention but due to bad marketing and some issues, apple not allowing this to be published it's not going where it should be.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.raahteam.raahtheapp

The app is made with expo(react native), firebase. Yes, we can consider opt-out of firebase later for something else because firebase itself may have privacy concerns.

    https://github.com/xpsdeset/raah-app

The back end is nothing but cloud functions for notifications and to check moderation reports.
    https://github.com/xpsdeset/raah-web

The reason I made this post is I am hoping some nonprofit organization or more experienced person could take over this project ahead. I want this to be open-source, add free, and transparent in privacy. Avoiding any data to be saved. Heck, redo the app, brand, tech stack, the concept if need be. The listeners don't have to be an approval system at the moment but I hope we can add this as well for a better quality of listeners.

I believe in open source and whatever I am in life right now is because of open source. I am just not sure how to take this further.

I was a developer in past for Blahtherapy and Blahtherapy is almost dead. I am aware 7cups exists but I am in touch with 7cups users base and listeners are not happy with where 7cups has gone. It's a nightmare with too many popups, questions, and privacy concerns.

People are relying on Omegle. It's that bad but I am sure we can make it better. Hoping to hear from someone. Peace

    How to "inherit a database"

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 03:33 PM PST

I had a problem a while ago and I could not find a satisfactory solution to it. Noone I knew could think of one either, though it stands to reason that there must be one. I am wondering if anybody here has experience of something like this.

I had created a database for a hotel management web app. This was basically like an advanced weekly timetable detailing rooms, staff, functions, things like that. However the entire itinerary changed radically from May to September, so I basically split the database into two: Summer and Winter.

But here's the thing. Splitting the database into two separate databases was a really ugly solution. Part-time staff might change. Room numbers might be altered. What was really required was for some tables to be meta (like staff, rooms, etc.) and tables relating to the weekly timetabling to be separate. Basically the equivalent of the summer and winter databases inheriting from a parent database that would have information common to both.

The database I was using for this was MySQL with innodb engine, but I would be prepared to use a different RDBMS if it had the appropriate functionality.

I can do some basic stuff, should i add it to a portfolio?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 03:20 PM PST

By basic i mean, rock-paper-scissors and a calculator. Both of them with some pretty shitty code.

Are those relevant to getting a job? or should i hold my horses until i can make more complex and better developed stuff?

Anyone build an auction website before? With a live auctioneer?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST

I'm trying to wrap my head around building a site that's primarily for auctions of music equipment (studio equipment and furniture, instrument lots, etc)... I'm wondering what's the best software/service to use for that. The website will be built on Wordpress but the actual auction component can be embedded if that makes the most sense. I'm not an expert programmer or anything like that so I'm looking for a solution that's easy to set up, easy to manage, and yet looks great and works reliably. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Also, if we wanted to have a live auctioneer hosting some auctions (so users can hear the auctioneer in real time as they watch the bids increase), how might we do that? Has someone here done something like this before and had good results?

    Thank you!

End to end production-grade web development checklist

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 05:09 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've taken up web development as a hobby some months ago and now I'm starting to work on a project that I'd eventually like to deploy and open up to the public. At the moment I'm refining my plan and I've already realised I've got quite a bit of research, conceptualisation, design and user testing to do before I even start coding.

I wanted to reach out to you all and ask for your input about the steps required to develop a website. Let me list my thoughts on this and if you have any suggestions to add/remove/modify content then please let me know. I'd like to point out that the below steps are most certainly not a set of best practices, instead, it's just a guess of a novice, so I'm very likely wrong somewhere and that's why I'm reaching out to you :)

    • Set up project resources, e.g. a Trello board (Optional but recommended)
    • Website goal definition (thanks to u/fordprefect76 for the suggestion)
    • Research similar products and offerings
    • Brainstorm and loosely define the content of your site
    • Settle on the domain name (I think it's best to do this earlier as it may influence your branding)
    • Design low fidelity wireframes that outline the skeleton of your site
    • If possible, get feedback from someone about the general structure to validate your work
    • Note down what models you'll need for your forms (low-fi wireframes should help here)
    • Design high fidelity wireframes giving your site some style. It is highly recommended to create 2 versions of it: one for mobile and one for desktop
    • Start coding: set up a git repo, hook it up to CI/CD that would at the very least run tests on PRs
    • Copy generation (suggestion from u/fordprefect76)
    • Set up your routes with site navigation, then implement core backend functionality (e.g. authentication & authorisation, error handling, etc)
    • Set up your DB, create your models and wire them up to the forms (this is really part of the core backend functionality)
    • Move on to frontend to reproduce your hi-fi wireframes. From what I understand it is recommended to start with the mobile version of your site and then set up media queries for larger devices
    • Deploy your site remotely and update your CI/CD accordingly
    • Analytics setup (suggestion from u/fordprefect76)

And here is the list of potential issues with what I've outlined above:

    • I have only a little bit of experience working with full-stack frameworks like Django, so perhaps the above steps might be a little different if you are using a frontend SPA framework with a separate backend -- please let me know if you think this is true
    • I feel that the design aspect needs more attention. I think it's safe to say that most of us here aren't expert web designers and I'm personally having a bit of a hard time with hi-fi wireframing even after completing a course on Adobe XD. If you have any tips here, then please let us know
    • Perhaps both backend and frontend bullet-points could be expanded into more concrete steps, let me know if you can think of a good way to structure this
    • You might find that the final deployment step is a bit light. I suppose it all depends on the solution you are using, some services just give you a VM that you need to set up yourself while others give you a managed DB, auto-scaling, self-healing, log monitoring, blue-green deployment and more. If you have any suggestions about the steps requires to set up your own VM, then please share with us. Lastly, I'd be eager to hear if you leave this step to the end or if you deploy remotely early on in your development cycle
    • I didn't mention anything about testing, but I hope that goes without saying -- if you are creating a real website then it's advisable to test the crap out of it using test-driven development
    • None of the above steps address post-deployment stuff such as maintenance, marketing (SEO/SEM) and analytics (e.g. Google Analytics), monetization (that's a big one -- I'd love to learn more about that), so please let us know if you have any tips here

That turned out to be quite a long post, but I hope that some of us will find it useful and others will be able to clarify some of the questions I raised.

    Many thanks!

    Company portal

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 12:28 AM PST

Hello everyone. My company fabricates steel products and they have asked me to make a portal for the company and to move everything online, from inquiry to production. I need something that will keep a record of all the inquiries and orders, generate invoices once the order is confirmed send the same to the factory, need something for labor-management to assign people to different projects, generate reports, etc. what is the best option I can go with?

    EDIT:

Thanks everyone for the replies. Just to add to my question I wont be doing it on my own and will hire someone probably a small local firm. I was thinking of a website, like something in PHP where the users can login and will have roles, with a portion for sales where they will generate an order and once confirmed it will be sent to the factory where they will allocate raw material and man power to it. There will be a portion for raw material where we can manage our stock and the factory manager will add labor which he will assign to every project and when they start working on that project they will login in to their accounts and notify that they have started working on it. and every thing can be monitored by the head office. This is just a rough idea.

Mass email causing website to go down

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 01:25 PM PST

I have a newsletter that is sent to around 10,000 subscribers but I find as soon as I have sent the email via MailChimp my website gets hit with thousands of requests that look like possible scanners. It is too quick to be real users.

I have website caching in place but the requests come in that fast that the cache doesnt get a chance to be created yet. So my server is overloaded and then runs too slow.

Is there a way to prevent mail clients or servers from scanning links in the emails? How do people handle that?

    Fixing Bugs after Deployment

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 05:22 AM PST

Hi! I hope I'm doing this correctly. Please be gentle.

My group and I just deployed a React app to Firebase. The person who deployed it is asleep, and we are trying to meet a deadline for our all-women hackathon. I fixed an error I noticed in our code, and I wanted the changes to be reflected on the hosted website. I was unsure of whether or not I needed to run:

npm run build or firebase deploy --only hosting -m "Fixed signup rendering"

Could anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you in advance!
