I interviewed over a dozen game developers in order to gain perspective on how to get a career in Game Dev.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:03 AM PST

Over the last 3 years I've interviewed game devs (and gaming creatives) about their careers in the realm of games. The goal of these interviews was to provide prospective devs valuable insight into the myriad of entry points into the gaming industry as well as experienced perspectives on current gaming trends.

Like everything, this project is a work in progress and quality improves over the course of the interviews, as well as the variety of guests. If you're interesting in watching or listening to these interviews, the links are here. I recommend starting at a more recent episode as earlier shows are less focused and lower production quality.

Where can I learn more about the "creative cone" approach to game design?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:17 AM PST

I came across this clip from this Horizon Zero Dawn documentary a long time ago that I've found really interesting and inspiring - Horizon's game designer describes their creative design process as sort of a sine wave inside a cone, where they start wide, exploring a breadth of core ideas / prototypes / concepts, and as time goes on, narrow the breadth of their experimentation until the game gels into a more cohesive whole.

This feels like it must be a common methodology for design, but I guess I haven't really seen it described this way before. It feels a bit similar to the Double Diamond design framework, and in the same spirit as IDEO's design thinking frameworks, but I feel like neither of these fully captures the iterative narrowing of Guerrilla's creative cone framework.

Is this "creative cone" approach actually a thing outside of Guerrilla? If it is, what would be some good resources to learn more about it?

Godot VS Game Maker: How Do They Compare?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:21 AM PST

What is the most "simple" game engine that can still be used professionally?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:01 AM PST

So, I have been using Unity for about 6-7 years now and consider its pros:

    • Very powerful, with C#, .NET and hundreds of thousands of things on the web, there is a solution for most problems I run into, even obscure ones.
    • I trust it will be around for a while.

But the cons of using Unity (for me, at least) have been:

    • The bigger a project gets (which happens pretty fast), the more bloated and slowed down everything gets, especially regarding the Unity Editor speed, compile times, build times etc.

I miss the days when I started out in game development with Construct 2, making entire games in days, iterating extremely fast. Even though I feel very comfortable in Unity, making prototypes is still not as fast as it could be (let alone making bigger games)

    So I am asking:

Do you have a workflow, engine, whatever, that allows you to keep a rapid momentum of iterative cycles, even when working on larger, professional projects?

    Is that even possible?

I am not looking for "beginner" engines without any coding but for engines that can be used professionally. Basically, the engine with the best "UX".

Need help preventing this kind of grid lock behavior by the player. Either punish them for sitting in this place too long or incentivize them otherwise. More in comments.

WIP Wednesday #143 - How is your gamedev tracking?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 03:29 AM PST

    What is WIP Wednesday?

Share your work-in-progress (WIP) prototype, feature, art, model or work-in-progress game here and get early feedback from, and give early feedback to, other game developers.

    [previous WIP Wednesdays]

    RULES

    • Do promote good feedback and interesting posts, and upvote those who posted it! Also, don't forget to thank the people who took some of their time to write some feedback or encouraging words for you, even if you don't agree with what they said.
    • Do state what kind of feedback you want. We realise this may be hard, but please be as specific as possible so we can help each other best.
    • Do leave feedback to at least 2 other posts. It should be common courtesy, but just for the record: If you post your work and want feedback, give feedback to other people as well.
    • Do not post your completed work. This is for work-in-progress only, we want to support each other in early phases (It doesn't have to be pretty!).
    • Do not try to promote your game to game devs here, we are not your audience. You may include links to your game's website, social media or devlog for those who are interested, but don't push it; this is not for marketing purposes.

Remember to use #WIPWednesday on social media for additional feedback and exposure!

Note: Using URL shorteners is discouraged as it may get you caught by Reddit's spam filter.

    No Synty Competitors?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:41 AM PST

Why is it that Synty seems to have no competition in the expansive 3d asset pack market? I really love their stuff, but I'm curious why no one else has tackled that niche.

I learned C# and made my first game, It is 4-Way Ping Pong with customizable game settings.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:04 AM PST

I hope this is a good place to post my progress. I made my first video game and posted it on https://itch.io/

My spin is the four way paddles with customizable game settings. I know Ping Pong has been made and remade many times before. I figured this would be a great way to learn controls and make a beginner video game. My plan is to learn more and make more video games as time goes on. Possibly even learning games for Math and English as well. I'm currently using C# windows forums. I was looking into Unity and other 2D/3D engines, I am thinking about importing a 3D environment in a C# forum and making more complex games as I keep learning.

Please let me know your thoughts, ways I can improve, and things I can look into. My goal is to get better and keep improving and making more.

    How do I set a camera's position on start? (unity 2d c#)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:43 AM PST

Ok, so I want my main camera to start on my player's position which is (0.5, -0.5, camera z position) and then continue "lerping" (which is already set up) but when I push play it starts at (0, 0, camera z position).

I also have an "exit" (-9, -19.3, 0) set up to send the player to a certain "startpoint" (-11, -6, 0) in the next scene, but... in the next scene, the camera starts at the exit's position and not at the "startpoint"'s position.

I've tried using the start method and the awake method and now... I'm stumped. So if anyone has a solution to these problems, please comment I would appreciate answers, thank you.

Viability of HTML5 for mobile games?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:03 PM PST

HTML5/Javascript looks like a great platform for games. Of course an HTML5 game could run on the web, making it immediately cross platform, but it could also easily be packaged into a desktop game with nwjs and the popular Greenworks Steam framework. Even Nintendo has an HTML5 devkit.

I'm wondering how mobile holds up, however. Cordova seems to be the answer here, but is it good? Does it feel native and offer all the relevant features for simple mobile games? Are there any caveats that would be useful to know?

    Any help appreciated!

Would RPG maker be capable of creating a prototype game for a Kickstarter that has all of the following Mechanics. If not which can it reasonably handle?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:01 AM PST

Recourse farming classic farming Building combat that can target specific body parts crafting and upgrading weapons, tools and armor A use based skill leveling system that's separate from XP A reputation system across 5 major factions and 10 minor ones. A skill check based speech system that uses reputation.

Basically I want to make a Fallout Game in RPG Maker to create buzz unless this wouldn't be best then I ask for your advice. I'm incredibly new. I used multimedia fusion 2 for a while on middle school.
