Junior Developers: what do you do on a daily basis?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:49 AM PST

Like what tasks do you have to do on a daily basis? Frontend preferably but I'm interested to hear what backend Devs do.

What would be considered a day's task? Build a form? Make a few buttons?

Would a junior be responsible for setting up something integral like redux? Or are you just implementing small things here and there.

Thank you for your insights! I'm starting a junior role soon so would like to know what kind of things are expected of me to do.

Experience: EU companies are moving away from storing data in the US

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:49 AM PST

This summer, EU invalidated the Privacy Shield agreement, which enables personal data storage from EU in the US.

Our company has now received two inquiries about whether we store data with US based companies. One of them will terminate our agreement if the data isn't moved.

I just thought I'd give a heads up to everyone. From my perspective it seems like this will be a source of major disruption in the upcoming months.

I just started learning HTML, CSS and JS and I'm getting stuck at the stupidest things. So why are the list items aligned to the right even though I'm using display flex in the parent and I've aligned the items in the center?

    Animation exercises for beginners

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:38 PM PST

I've been playing around with gsap for the past day and was wondering if there are animation exercises that I should practice on as a newbie(in animations, that is). I'm an absolute beginner in gsap (or even animations for that matter) and would love to get suggestions regarding animation exercises (buttons, screen-entry/exit, landing page, etc)

    TIA!!

How important is it to have a LinkedIn profile photo? I’ve heard that there’s quite a bit of discrimination within the platform, regarding race and attractiveness. I want to ensure I’m receiving fairness throughout my application process. Anyone else ever been in the same boat?

    To summarize,

I feel my skill set and abilities should be the only focus (and of course my background if offered a role, which is completely clean).

    CENTOS7 500 internal server error

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:05 PM PST

I was given a CENTOS 7 and installed a LAMP stack on it for an application I needed. I was able to get it all running with an SSL cert, but not when i try to setup my PHP application, all CSS/JS/HTML files give me a 500 Internal server error, but a simple test.php file with phpinfo() on it works just fine.

Any ideas what I need to do to get this fixed?

When I try to go to the setup page to setup the application, it gives me a fsockopen() unable to connect error

All Files are 644 and folder 755, so that has been checked.

I know the HTML, CSS and JS but what's a port, service worker and memory safety?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:56 AM PST

Goal: I'm leaning tech so I can manage employees at a tech startup. I want to make my my future web app secure, fast and scalable.

I've self learned the languages but I don't understand many of the tutorials because I lack the knowledge of anything except the syntax. Although, I can create the simple static sites and web apps but I'm afraid that I'll run into problems while scaling, making it fast and secure.

I want to learn how things work from the top to bottom so I can choose what's best for my company moving from one growth stage to another.

Trapping network requests that don't show up as websockets or normal http traffic?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:36 PM PST

I've been on a few sites lately where I'm interested to see what traffic is flowing and have been surprised to see that even with websocket logging turned on, I'm not seeing anything in the Chrome network tab.

Is there a known way to put something on the wire while bypassing the Chrome network inspector?

Landing page help for a newbie

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

    Hey guys,

So a little back story. I left school to take a job as an insurance broker for a small insurance agency, and I've been talking to my collogues on how we can attract more customers to our business digitally. One of the ideas we had was to create a separate landing page that we can market digitally to generate leads came into the conversation. Personally, I think its a great idea because we already own several domain names that already create organic traffic. I'm already familiar with digital marketing via Facebook and google because I've done some ecommerce here and there through shopify so the only piece left to this puzzle is actually creating a website with a landing page that will take simple data like Name, phone and address to generate a lead for an agent to call. I think it would be a great experience for me to take up this challenge and create this website and I need some help/advice from you guys.

With that being said, how do I go about doing this and which languages should I be at least proficient in to successfully create this website?

The website will need to take basic information like Name, address, martial status, phone number, etc. and then direct this data to our system for an agent to see.

I am mostly familiar with C++ and I know very very little of HTML and CSS but the entire reason why I want to take initiative of this project is to learn.

Anyways hopefully you guys can help me understand how to build this project and what ill need to have in hand to actually create this website. If you have/know of any resources please let me know!

Best approach for relatively simple Wordpress site/SPA

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:16 PM PST

    Hi r/webdev,

Looking for some advice on two possible approaches for a website/SPA I've been asked to develop at work.

A bit of context: I'm not a full-time dev, primarily I do end user support for an automated marketing platform that my company owns but didn't develop, though as we're a fairly small company with no in-house devs and I'm halfway through my CS degree and have been self-learning web dev for a number of years now they've been getting me to work on some smaller web projects like building some simple internal tools/sites, migrating/redesigning the company blog (saving us heaps moving away from Hubspot) and well as work with the devs for our proprietary product making some front end/UI improvements. I'm keen to transition into a developer role in future so it's a great job that I'm able to do while still studying (my uni offers nearly all their CS/IT courses via 100% online delivery, just have to take a day of leave here and there for semester finals/the occasional mid-sem) while offering some interesting and practical experience. The only issue is I don't have any senior devs to mentor me or go to when I'm not sure about something, so to r/webdev I've come!

My boss has asked me to develop an internal company 2021 events calendar site that would aim to increase awareness of our company events amongst our offices and provide links to where people can register. We run about 500+ events a year around the country in each state that our various offices around the country can attend. Many of these events charge for attendance so there is some financial incentive for the company to maximise event registration. Immediately I thought to make the site in Wordpress since I previously selected Wordpress for our company blog as it was the CMS I was most familiar developing for/managing and most of the people in our office had some experience using it meaning everyone would be able to make changes to the events. The trouble is my PHP skills are no bueno (I can search and copy paste code from SO into functions.php and understand the file structure/heirarchies but that's about it) and my SQL currently is pretty much limited to SELECT FROM WHERE. My Javascript is pretty dang good though, and fortunately there's a good free WP plugin (The Events Calendar) for storing events in the WP database that also sets up a REST API you can query from the front end, so I've done an initial prototype where index.php just includes container divs and the whole page is rendered by JS in the browser.

The site is a 100vw window for each month which includes all the events for that month with horizontal navigation between months (12 windows side by side using swiperjs. Basically the page loads and immediately displays a loader while it fetches all of the events for 2021 (~500) as JSON including event feature image URLs, which is a pretty small file itself. Once it gets that back, it processes and destructures the response a bit, generates the HTML for January, appends it to the body, waits for visible images to load then removes the loader. Navigating to a different month brings back the loader, replaces the body HTML with the HTML for the new month, loads new images in the HTML and removes the loader. It gives an AJAX/lazy loading like feel to the app by only loading images as required and allowing the newly generated <img>s to load before displaying the content although it's only making one initial request to the database on page load.

The initial version works really well, though there's a part of me that wonders whether I've been a bit too clever using 600+ lines of JS for what is essentially a very simple site when there's probably a PHP/native Wordpress based solution that would perhaps be a lot simpler, more reliable and more maintainable. On the other hand, I wonder if using my own code and avoiding WP plugin bloat would perhaps be more performant, though I'm not sure and don't know how to check this. The code itself will be compiled in ES5 for production and once the site is actually made, I don't expect that my company will want to make any changes to the theme/site itself other than making changes to events.

Would really appreciate any advice about my approach or suggestions and whether there might be a better way to do what I'm looking to do. I would share the code for the site but there's a lot of company specific info scattered throughout the repo so unfortunately I can't. I'm just after conceptual advice anyway, not so much code review. Thanks for any and all help!

    How to contact a webdev?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:16 AM PST

    Hi all!

    UPDATE

I'm "closing" this post as the answers given gave me your perspective on the matter. I thought I did well for leaving the budget open, but now understand that this was not a smart move.

r/webdev & everyone that took time to give me your pov/feedback : THANK YOU !

    TLDR see bottom of post.

First things first, I know the title is very general / vague, but I hope I make up for it in the body of this post. This is the first time that I'm responsible for contracting a webdev/agency.

    My previous experience:

    • First boss : Hired a very fancy agency, overpromised/underdelivered, high cost/not the expected endresult. (Looked the agency up, they went bankrupt a year after with A LOT of unhappy clients).

    • Second boss : imo a cheapass that thinks everything is easy/free. Only worked with platforms like freelancer/upwork/etc. They were happy/proud of the result, so good for them. I didn't like the hassle/poor poor quality of communication, and tbh the performance wasnt there, not fully responsive, etc

    How I prepared:

    • I'm part of the statistics of people that followed programming courses during quarantine :) Reason for this is that I felt it was/is necessary to at least understand a bit of the basics. I followed tutorials, got stuck several times, etc

I think that I understand the work involved to make a website a lot better. And have a lot more appreciation for your profession / expertise. (Again my opinion but a lot of people don't have a clue what it is you do and think its easy due to sites like a wix, etc...

    • We wrote down important features (responsive/multilingual/...) than we browsed the www and looked at hundreds of company websites in our field. Features we liked, we wrote down. Sites we loved, we searched for the dev/agency responsible for that piece of art.

    What we hoped to find:

    • a great contact that we can trust, good communicator, experienced in their field
    • someone (or multiple if agency) that thinks with us to improve, but maybe also says things like: "Hey that feature is handy but takes x time / has x cost. Do you need it from the start? If not we could always implement later and push budget. No bullshit, straight to the point, a business conversation over a cup of coffee.

    How we contacted the devs/agencies:

    • I contacted them by email or by form on their website
    • told them how I found them
    • Gave the url of site we liked, told them we need a similar website with features (kept it short/simple)
    • I'm honest, told them we are starting up, we need to plan this in the financial plan, so budget is important

What I did not do: - gave them a budget (imo they have to tell me the value of their work) - told them to use a specific stack (dev goes what he feels comfy with)

    Result:

    • No one, like really NONE, of the companies (12+) I contacted replied.
    • My favourites (+/- 5), I contacted again saying the email might not gone through, and if they are not interested to just tell me up front. (No problem with that, at least I know)
    • Again! None of them replied. Like wtf, is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

    Example of contact:

    Hi (name of responsible),

I'm (name) and contact you regarding your services. We found you as we loved one of your previous projects (link).

We are starting up our company and are in need of a multilingual, fully responsive and mobile friendly website. The (link above) website has basically the features/design we like / need. Of course a few tweaks are necessary, but assume we can discuss details in further conversations.

As we are in the start up fase, we would need to plan in the financials. Is it possible to give us guidance in the timeframe and budget for a similar site as (link).

If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask!

    Thank you in advance,

Why am I making a post about this:

You as a community, surely knows best how you would want to be contacted. Am I doing something wrong? What should I do different?

TLDR: How should a potential client contact you?

getting redirect uri mismatch when signing in via Google on local machine

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:38 PM PST

Getting this redirect error when I try to sign into my webapp on my localhost via Google Oauth

    Authorization Error Error 400: redirect_uri_mismatch The redirect URI in the request, http://localhost/api/auth/callback/google, does not match the ones authorized for the OAuth client. To update the authorized redirect URIs, visit: https://console.developers.google.com/apis/credentials/oauthclient/${your_client_id}?project=${your_project_number}

I've already tried adding http://localhost and http://lvh.me as authorized domains for my Oauth client, but am still getting the same error. Does anybody know what went wrong here and how to fix?

Honest criticism for aspiring junior dev

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:42 AM PST

Could I get your feedback on my first semi major portfolio project? I've been hit pretty hard professionally during COVID and focused most of my free time the past year on learning coding. Completed free code camp and learned more about react-redux, python (flask-django), and version control. I had an interview about 6 months ago and BOMBED so read "Cracking the Coding Interview". Now I'd like to take another stab at applying and would appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

    Worth buying?

I made my first full-stack app. So what do I do next?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:34 AM PST

    https://nice-guy-pose.herokuapp.com/

This is my first full-stack app made with MERN stack and also it has an admin panel along with a stripe for payment needs. This made it into life because of Chakra-UI if it wasn't chakra-UI I couldn't have completed it. I am confused now about what to do next.

    My learning list:

    • React learn in-depth
    • CSS(I am definitely not good at it)
    • AWS Certification(You know I am from a 3rd world country so, dumping everything on my resume is stuck to my blood)
    • Data structures and algorithms(I don't know why but people insist to practice. I know it serves a purpose but still)
    • Django(I am not sure if I need this. But I love it)
    • Linux, Networking, etc

I thought of doing another full stack project and realized it would be the same as the previous one. I cannot come up with good ideas. The ideas given by google are overwhelming like integrating machine learning and blockchain. I often feel sorry that I cannot make a simple game because of animations and game logic. I don't know what should I learn next either. Putting more into the learning list makes me distracted and it is not good either. The competition for the job makes me nervous that I should learn everything. I applied for internships but because of final year college, I have projects and stuff I cannot manage both.

    My questions:

    • How do I prioritize the learning list?
    • What should I do to get an entry-level job?
    • Or am I at least eligible for being a full-stack developer?

I am hoping for good answers. Thank you.

Weird requests showing up in my logs

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:45 PM PST

I was looking at my logs today and I'm seen some odd requests like:

    GET /vendor/.env

    GET /users

The other odd thing about these requests is that they are very spaced out. Like once or twice an hour I'll get some very random request for a path that I don't even serve.

Seems like someone is doing some pentesting on my site, but is this common? Other than ensuring my site is secure, is there anything I should do in response?

How do I crawl a website that is being rendered through JavaScript extremely fast?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:13 AM PST

I'm making question answering system which is supposed to search on the internet and then find the best answer. I'm currently doing this with the requests library in Python, however this is quite ineffecient because many popular websites are being rendered with JavaScript, thus I'm not able to find the text. I've tried using selenium, but this was way too slow for in my case. I was then wondering how a browser can render websites so fast compared to selenium, and maybe I can use that technique to render the website?

Would this be worth and what else can I do to be ready for my first web dev job?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:49 PM PST

I'm August I signed up for a program at my community College, its a "Technical Certificate" and it last a year. I think its around $2000 to $2500 and the description of the program is

"The Web Design Technical Certificate program combines design and software development to prepare individuals to plan, create, deploy, and maintain websites and web interfaces. They will learn client-side web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as the fundamentals of design and usability. After successful completion of this technical certificate, students will be capable of filling entry-level web design, front-end web development, and webmaster positions as well as achieve potential self-employment as a freelance web designer."

Would this be worth taking? There's a bunch of smaller companies around where I live who are in desperate need of a web developer so one of those would possibly be the place I apply to after the program.

My next question is if its worth it what else can I study to make sure I'm fully ready when the time comes for me to get a job? I would like to study as much as possible this next yesr and a half so I can hopefully land a decent job. Thank you for any advice!
