How does one reduce the halting problem to Λ-halting problem (Λ-HP)? Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:29 PM PST Halting problem (HP) Input: A Turing machine M and a string w ∈ Σ ∗ . Question: Does M reach a halting configuration on input w? Λ-halting problem (Λ-HP) Input: A Turing machine M. Question: Does M reach a halting configuration on input Λ? I am trying to reduce the HP problem to Λ-HP. Below is a rough sketch of how i think it will work. Turing machine HP takes input e(M)e(Λ) . C - compiler will ignore all inputs, clear tape, & run M on Λ. If M accepts then TM Hp runs TM Λ- HP on e(MΛ). If it accepts, TM HP also accepts and vice versa. [link] [comments] |

[R] Columbia University Model Learns Predictability From Unlabelled Video Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:06 PM PST In a new paper, a trio of Columbia University researchers propose a novel framework and hierarchical predictive model that learns to identify what is predictable from unlabelled video. The paper Learning the Predictability of the Future introduces a hierarchical predictive model for learning what is predictable from unlabelled video. Inspired by the observation that people often organize actions hierarchically, the researchers designed the approach to jointly learn a hierarchy of actions from unlabelled video while also learning to anticipate them at the right level of abstraction. The model thus will predict a future action at the concrete level of the hierarchy when it is confident, and, when it lacks confidence, will select a higher level of abstraction to improve confidence. Here is a quick read: Columbia University Model Learns Predictability From Unlabelled Video The paper Learning the Predictability of the Future is on arXiv. The code and model are available on the project GitHub. [link] [comments] |
Free Q&A with Circonus Founder and CTO Theo Schlossnagle on Building Your Own Time-Series Database Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:54 PM PST January 12 at 12 pm ET, join Theo Schlossnagle, Founder and CTO of Circonus and Co-Chair of the ACM Queue Editorial Board, for a Q&A based on his Case Study, "Always-On Time-Series Database: Keeping Up Where There's No Way to Catch Up." Chris McCubbin, Senior Applied Scientist at AWS, moderates. In the case study, Theo discusses how he built his own time-series database for Circonus, an organization that performs telemetry analysis on an already large and exponentially growing number of IoT devices. You are invited to download and read the case study, consider the challenges and lessons learned by Theo and Circonus, and bring your questions to the live talk, which will be based on questions from attendees. . Register here to attend live or on demand. [link] [comments] |
