Is it ethical to "borrow" css?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 08:29 AM PST

I am a backend dev that sometimes delve into full stack dev and in order to prettify the frontend ui, I find myself constantly copy pasting codepen examples for the css and htmls. Just wondering if this is normally frowned upon?

Maybe someone has a little idea for me how i could improve it. After i added a nice color pallete on/off mechanism i rly dont have more good ideas.

Anyone knowing how i could make a linear gradient like infinite ? this bothers me a lot.

Is there a TodoMVC-like website for comparing the visual defaults of mainstream CSS libraries/frameworks?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 09:18 AM PST

I'm looking for something that very compactly shows you the default styling of all of the major elements in an organized way. Ideally a preview of every element should fit on the screen without scrolling.

Does anybody know of a library/framework/website that does this well?

    CSS Class Seelctor Issues

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 03:08 PM PST

I'm doing FreeCodeCamp's Product landing page but trying to figure out why my class selector isn't working is making me tear my hair out. I'm trying to resize my icon's into a universal size so they fit on the page but the .icon selector just isn't working. Am I missing something here? Did I screw up my HTML? What's wrong here?

    https://codepen.io/Smellbringer/pen/XWjNGEx

(Also, how do I put my text on the side of the icon as opposed to below.)

How to set up a custom domain with Netlify

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 05:20 AM PST

I have a Netlify site hosted at say xxx.netlify.app. Now I bought a domain at Namecheap. To make it point to the netlify app, I set a ALIAS DNS record to xxx.netlify.app. https://i.stack.imgur.com/mOL3D.png

But on accessing the Namecheap domain site, I get the NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID error on Chrome. It also says: You cannot visit xxx.dev right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later. Now I know that I could change the Namecheap nameservers to the ones Netlify recommends for custom domains. But I would like to do it without that because, by the looks of it, I think ALIAS record should have worked.

What am I doing wrong here?

Need some help with my react project

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 12:05 PM PST

Hi everyone hope you are doing well, i just wanted to ask a question about my personal project that i am working on, the project it's a small ecommerce website where i sell pc parts. Now each product section it's gonna have it's own filters like filter product by vram if it's a gpu product or if it's a headphone product filter by headphone type. My question is should i create a folder for each product section and for each product section create it's own filters or is that a bloated way to do? hope you understand what i am trying to ask.

Why do some websites have "office hours"? What is a good example for a reason for this?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 02:53 PM PST

For example, the CRA (canadian revenue agency) website only has certain hours during the day you can use it.

This is extremely frustrating when they like to send you a personal email at 2 in the morning (has happened often) saying you need to sign in to see your important mail. But you cant sign in for several hours.

Looking to get around mixed content warnings

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 02:41 PM PST

I am working on a website where I want to include an image from an external website. The external website changes the image once per day but the url is constant for the image.

My issue is that that website does not use SSL, so i get mixed content warnings on my site if i try to use it.

Is there a nice reverse proxy (correct terminology?) for getting the image for me? I was using https://images.weserv.nl/ but their cache is causing a problem for me, even with the option to control the cache lifetime (it doesnt seem to obey the max age argument you provide).

I just need a way to get the image over https.

There are lots of tutorials out there for setting up your own server to do this, but I can only work with front end in this case.

    Cheers

If I switch a client's web hosting provider but leave their domain/email on the old one will that cause issues with my email services?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 08:41 AM PST

I am a decent developer, but I'll admit to being completely and totally ignorant of everything email. I just don't understand it, because I haven't spent any time on it. My expertise stops at forwarding emails in cPanel.

I have a client now who has their email/site/domain hosted on GoDaddy, I migrated the site to Bluehost and they're asking if they need to switch the domain/email as well. I just sent them a total bullshit response, and I'm nervous I was wrong. I know you can keep the domain on GoDaddy, but I have no clue about the email...

When I point the domain to the Bluehost nameservers, is that going to blow up their email?

Additionally, if you have any resources for web dev email 101, please send em my way. It's getting to be a big problem for me not knowing anything about email.

Trying to display a lightbox in Unbounce using Magnific-popup

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 02:22 PM PST

Is there any non-malicious reason for this code on a wordpress index page? Windows defender marked a lot of the files on this client's site as severe backdoor/trojan threats when I downloaded them. I found this code on his index.php. He uses a security service called Sucuri. Would it come from them?

    Best place to find designs?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 12:27 AM PST

I'm going to start a project for a family member soon, but I'm not a web designer. I was hoping people could point me to some designs (hopefully free/cheap) that I can use for the site and import into React.

It's fairy simple and doesn't need any user interaction outside of a contact form. I'd probably be using something like Gatsby/CMS for it too.

Can't find out "WHAT" to ask exactly in a web dev problem :/

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 09:32 AM PST

Hey guys I'm quite new to the web development, I've been working on a project recently and had some problems which I couldn't find the solution to online because I don't exactly know WHAT to ask... I've learnt front end pretty well and was expecting the backend to be as easy as the design in terms of coding but it isn't that close I believe.

I wanted to know some keywords that relating to the problems in terms of coding that I could ask on Google/Youtube -

    • How does the login/signup form works and how can it be used in chatting and filling out forms? • How can I get the information from a form into my database and show that only to some specific ppl who login onto website? • And how to make different dashboards for different kinds of people who login and do I need to have my dashboard on website to control everything? How does that happen?

P.S - I appreciate to anyone helping me out I've tried to search these terms on my own on youtube but nothing EXACTLY shows up that I'm looking for... Also all this is on Reactjs language.

    Hello,

Lately i was considering moving out to Canada (i'm french) to potentially start my carreer as a fullstack web developper. But i cannot find any ressources about the state of the job market for Juniors, and maybe some of you live their and can help me with this.

    3. anything else I should know?
    4. should I go study in one their school first ? (i have currently a 2 years after highschool diploma in France)

    Thanks in advance.
