    Working on a personal project with logins & stored user information-- how do I protect myself legally?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 12:10 AM PST

    I'm working on a personal project that is a productivity app-- as such, I've set up logins through Firebase UI and the user stores information that is mapped to each user who logs in. The app, for those interested, is a React front-end with a Go Serverless back-end.

    I do not collect payments and expect to make no money from this app. It's just a fun project and hopefully helps some people.

    Given this, what all do I have to do to protect myself legally? What have you guys done? There's tons of questions in my head, including

    • Do I need a formal privacy policy and how should I make one?
    • Do I need an LLC to protect myself from liability & (less importantly) to safeguard my name?

    Is there some blanket disclaimer I can just throw on the website so I'm not liable? Or do I need to make concrete legal steps? Should I just restrict the app to only people who get an invite code from me and say "please don't sue me"?

    I'm sure I'm not the only one who's made a passion project that involves logins and people storing information, so wondering what the general course of action is!

    How to catch up to baseline industry standards for an experienced, but only occassional, static HTML/CSS/JS coder.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 10:55 AM PST

    Quick background: I wrote my first webpage in like 1999 or something. I've followed the progression into HTML5, I've kept up with Flex, Grids, etc. I have experience in JS, although my JQuery knowledge seems to be totally outdated at this point. However, my actual job is in graphic design, not really coding, and I only have to code pages myself maybe once or twice a year.

    However, I was recently supplied some files to convert over to a Shopify theme, and I needed to install NPM, Parcels, and SASS in order to get it running. I have never used anything like that because all the pages I needed to make I could just make with static HTML. I don't rely on GitHub repos because I've never had to do that, it's not core to my job. I just have MAMP on my machine, test code locally, and upload it to the server-and this is only for small quick projects. Larger projects we usually hire out to a dev team.

    Can someone point me in the direction of the best place to get a crash course in the parts of web dev that are NOT the actual front end code (i.e. HTML/CSS/JS)? For example, working within Github, setting up Node, WTF is Angular, etc.?

    Obviously there are TONS of tutorials on YouTube and I have found plenty of creators on there that are fantastic, however I don't really know what I should start with and what would be considered "Baseline" as there are so many different technologies and I don't know really what they're for.

    TL;DR: What are the best foundational, industry standard web dev things to learn that are not related to the actual HTML/CSS/JS? I.e. GitHub, Node, Sass, etc.

    Why should I use MongoDB over PostgreSQL?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 05:41 AM PST

    I just finished learning MongoDB and started learning Mongoose, but I'm not really seeing the benefit of MongoDB. So far, what I'm seeing is that MongoDB is quite similar to Postgres, except it lacks columns and makes relationships a lot more complicated.

    I get that without columns it gives a lot more flexibility to how you design your database, but as a person who likes everything organised, I find myself favouring the existence of columns.

    As for relationships, it seems a lot easier to declare relationships in Postgres opposed to MongoDB, whether it's one to one, one to many or many to many.

    Is there any specific case where MongoDB will be better than Postgres, or is it okay if I just stick with Postgres and keep my knowledge of MongoDB with me?

    Id like a single source of truth in the design documentation system im building that allows multiple excerpts of content from one document to show up as includes in other documents. Is this possible?

Am about to start working on a Nodejs project that starts with web app first and then a mobile app later and still cant make my mind on the good way to go about it in terms of spend and complexity of the project. Which one is the good choice , templating engine (ejs ) Or front end framework (angular) ?

    My Design Skills Are Lacking

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST

    First off thank you for taking the time to read this post, and input would be appreciated.

    I am building my portfolio website and I cannot figure out how to make it look good. Things that are evading me are background pictures, color palettes, and fonts. I have tried using a color palette generator and a few premade ones but while the palettes look good it doesn't translate well to my site.

    As for pictures and fonts I don't even know where to start. Fonts all look similar to me. I can tell you what I don't like but that's about it.

    Any tips or advice for making websites look good? I don't want to be a designer but I feel like the design of my website will get me turned down anyway.

    Does anybody know what SaaS these websites use to design and build these beautiful ecommerce quizzes?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 06:11 AM PST

    Lots of beautiful product finder quizzes - are they custom made or do these sites use a SaaS to run these:

    https://getremrise.com/pages/questionaire

    https://www.functionofskincare.com/skin/?source=functionofbeauty

    I checked https://builtwith.com but didn't see anything that allows for creating these. The usual ecommerce quiz builders have terrible design.

    Would love your help (thank you) in finding out how these are created!

    Thanks :)

    Is there something (good or bad) I should know about GitHub pages free hosting?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 11:29 AM PST

    Good day community!

    Anybody knows what exactly can I get (maybe better SEO or similar benefits), and what exactly they get from me (data, project ownership)?

    What about the combo with Netlify?

    What's the deal here? When I see the word FREE, I always try to look who is behind. In this case, I believe is Microsoft.

    Thank you, all!

    Need End-To-End Solution

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 02:50 PM PST

    Hi There,

    I would want to build a site up and running both web and mobile based version.

    Website is something like Cryptocurrency Alerting - An App for Bitcoin & Crypto Alerts

    Customers should be able to signup using social media sites like facebook or email address

    and then set alert system for stocks which they want to monitor or study.

    I tried a particular template using wix, got the webpages from it.

    Questions:

    1. How to make it live?
    2. what needs to be done in terms of coding?
    3. How do i make it public as a site accessible to anyone? lets stick for US for now.
    4. What would be the maintenance costs before i make any penny on it.

    Since i am a newbie , pardon my questions and also please don't hesitate to ask any questions you have.

    There are many sites already developed which does more or less the same what i expect, i want to know the life cycle of the whole things technically.

    How to import emails from Gmail with complete privacy and security

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 05:36 AM PST

    This is what I want to build. Wondering how to make it as private as possible.

    I want to let users import their emails from Gmail into my webapp, but I won't be able to read their emails. How should I do it in a secure way that's publicly verifiable to my users that I can't read their emails?

    Why are my media queries not working?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 03:42 AM PST

    <meta content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" name="viewport" />

    I have this tag, but there is something weird I'm dealing with:

    @media (min-width: 800px){

    selector{

    font-size :3rem

    }

    }

    @media (min-width: 1000px) {

    selector{

    font-size :3.5rem

    }

    }

    When I added the codes above, I saw (and still see) something unusual:

    When the screen size is LARGE ENOUGH to get @media (min-width: 1000px) {selector{font-size :3.5rem}} to work, I see @media (min-width: 800px) {selector{font-size :3rem}} being applied! Why?

    Vanilla Javascript: I want to bind a function to $

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 06:39 AM PST

    Sorry for the title, I really didn't know a better way to explain it. I am experimenting with JS and sometimes I miss the simple "tricks" used by jQuery. Right now I use the '$' shortcut to shorten my code, just like jQuery does:

    const $ = document.querySelector.bind(document);

    So instead of writing something like this:

    document.getElementById('something').style.display = 'none';

    I can do this:

    $('#something').style.display = 'none';

    Now I would would like to be able to bind a function to '$'. So if I have this function:

    function hideElement(id) { $(id).style.display = 'none'; }

    Instead of using it this way:

    hideElement('#something');

    It would like to make it "bound" to the selected element:

    $('#something').hideElement();

    I hope it makes sense. How do I bind hideElement() to my $ elements, so I can do this:

    $('#something').hideElement(); $('#anotherone').hideElement(); $('#lastone').hideElement();

    Of course I don't need such a simple function (I can use classList and add/remove a simple class if I want to show/hide my elements). The function I need to bind would do more things at the same time.

    I'd like to learn how to do it.

    Experience with DreamHost hosting? Better than NameCheap hosting?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 05:04 AM PST

    I'm currently hosting my websites with NameCheap's Stellar Plus shared hosting, never had any problems with NameCheap and I feel like I get value for money, but I've just noticed and seen good things about DreamHost's Shared Unlimited hosting.

    Has anyone got any experience with DreamHost hosting?

    Ecommerce tracking: Conversion API plugin for Google Analytics.

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 03:31 AM PST

    In facebook pixel for example, we can create pixel and use partner integration from their list, download plugin from pixel page and upload it to the plugin to our site. (for example wordpress)

    This will make our work easier by not having to create and track conversion event manually one by one.

    But I dont see the same solution for google analytic. All solution is to create conversion manually.

    is there any solution for this?

    thank you.

    How can I show off older flash websites?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 11:46 AM PST

    Hey all,

    I have history in web development and design, and started in the field back in 1997. Of course, I was there for the peak of Macromedia (then Adobe) Flash. I remember attending conferences on the subject.

    I usually enjoy having one or two of these older flash websites in my online portfolio as a way to show where I come from, but as you all know, it is now impossible.

    Is there an easy way to "convert" those older SWF files to a technology that would be supported nowadays?

    Thanks,

    Simo

    Creating a simple web app with reactjs + spring boot?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 11:39 AM PST

    This is my first time attempting this, I want to created a relatively simple website where the user enters and email and then goes through various questions regarding their food intake, height weight etc and generates a workoutplan that is emailed to them at the end. I'm confused m. I would use spring boot and Java for the backend, and JavaScript for the front end correct? Where would I store the methods, with JavaScript or Java in the backend? Sorry I'm a noob

    Edit: I have experience in all included languages including SQL

    [badcode] What happens if you use invalid html tags ?

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 11:35 AM PST

    Sorry for the noob question. But couldn't find a clear explanation elsewhere. Was just wondering what happens if you use invalid html tags like <p1> <heading> <content> etc ?

    It seems to just work on many browsers (firefox,opera,chrome) etc.
