Just finished building my portfolio website Posted: 12 Dec 2020 11:14 AM PST This is the first website I ever built. It still has a few bugs (the dark mode toggle acts wonky when you refresh it). Any feedback, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Source code: https://github.com/diresh-shrestha/diresh.io [link] [comments]

Do you unknowingly solve coding problems in your sleep? Posted: 12 Dec 2020 06:53 AM PST Random question, bear with me. I'm still moderately new to web dev and coding, maybe 6 months in. However, I've noticed that on days where I didn't completely finish what I was working on I will wake up at 2-3 am with the solution in my head. If I don't get to coding right then, I'll forget it and have to spend hours working through it the next day. Some of my best work comes at 3am. Am I the only one? This only happens when coding or web development. It's great, but also terrible at the same time. [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Dec 2020 12:28 PM PST I'm planning to launch a product but I have no idea what kind of developers I should be hiring or working with. I'm a newbie web designer, have worked with HTML, CSS, Popular wordpress plugins and C++. What i'm looking for my product is a mobile app as well as a website, same visuals, same functionality, I guess both will be having the same backend? So what language would be the best to go for regarding this? Would this be called a web application and an android application aswell? I would be really grateful for some guidance here :) Some details about the app: The interface and functionality should be the same on both mobile and website for each type of account. I guess this would all be very complicated for a newbie but have to start somewhere. Edit: Some further details about the product. [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:18 PM PST Am i the only one feeling the burn at the end of the year to satisfy these managers who are just demanding that progress be made before winter break sets in. I feel like it's pretty unfair on the developer to "pick up the slack" for poor planning on these projects but I'm definitely feeling it from multiple directions at the moment. Many of these projects could have said "we need to get all this done by August". But now it's like "We need to show progress now on X, Y, Z". So part of this is that I work for an agency and the agency owner has decided to just pick up a bunch of immediate project requirements since apparently this all has a trickle down effect. But, I for one, am not happy. Not to mention the countless meetings that just take away the necessary dev time to get all their requests done. It's not fair without some sort of incentive and I feel like I'm going to be facing a "Sorry, we did our best" in about a week or so. Just wanted to get that off my chest, thanks. Posted: 12 Dec 2020 10:37 AM PST I'm trying to get the date from a timestamp (milliseconds). The milliseconds are 1607797541 (today GMT) and 1607886000 (tomorrow GMT). When I create a date object from these milliseconds and call the getDay() method I get the same day. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix this? ``` Const date1 = new Date(todaymilliseconds) Const date2 = new Date(tomorrowmilliseconds) Console.log(date1.getDay()) // = 1 Console.log(date2.getDay()) // = 2 ``` [link] [comments]
For React developers, what's the best way to style React Components? Posted: 12 Dec 2020 05:41 AM PST Now, obviously this is a subjective answer, but there are so many ways to style react components, vanilla, CSS-in-JS, styled-components, in-line, CSS modues etc. and I'm not sure which one to choose. Which would be the best one to pick? Is there a best practice? I tried googling a bunch of pros and cons articles but a lot of them see, contradictary to say the last. Hoping I can get more in-sight on what worked for you and why you like doing it a certain way. Or do you have no preference either? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Should we care about the UI/UX of our 404 pages? Posted: 12 Dec 2020 10:02 AM PST Yeah, I know it's just the 404 page. However, I work for a semi-popular e-commerce site and our 404 page is not good, and even worse on mobile. Our competitor's 404 pages aren't anything to boast about either, but they're better. See some popular e-commerce 404 pages:
Hitting the 404 page is a frustrating experience for a customer, I think the duty of this page is to delight (maybe with a bit of humor if that fits the brand) and redirect them to the homepage, a help center, or some of the popular pages on site. Some more fun/interactive 404 pages outside of e-commerce: On our 404 page we give the customer a very crappy image of a product followed by a bulleted list of what they could have done wrong. For example, you mistyped the URL, bookmarked an old page, etc. and provide no links, search bar, or anything pleasing that could lessen their frustration. I can't help but think that droves of customers bounce from our site with a bad taste in their mouth. As could be expected, no team is going to ever have ownership over this page, so I want to make a push to spend just a couple days on it (hackathon style). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any case studies on how a good 404 page affects customer loyalty, funnel metrics, etc. so it seems like it might just be a "it's the right thing to do" push, which is never terribly convincing. Obviously some companies have put a lot of thought into theirs, so at least to them it seems it's worth the effort? [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Dec 2020 03:51 PM PST So since a couple of weeks, I'm working on a website on WIX which is going to be used for donations and after a lot of work, I found out WIX is not safe. How true is that as of now December 12, 2020? Should I abandon all my work on it? [link] [comments]
