    UK computer science universities

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 10:57 PM PST

Hey guys. What are the best computer science universities in UK besides oxbridge and imperial? I've done some googling and research but I would like to hear some other opinions.

Feeling overwhelmed by my desire to study lots of things

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 03:30 PM PST

Basically since about 6 months ago I learned frontend+ backend development and the wonderful world of REST api's.. Now I want to delve deeper into it because I'm not really happy with just keeping it at knowing how to open a few endpoints and how to return and use data.

I'd like to learn more about software architecture principles as well as how to design a backend which would have a bunch of data models most likely as well as best practices. I also feel like I want to know more about networking because I love the concept of low level programming and the network layers.

However I feel super overwhelmed because I don't really know what to read first or learn first and I have several other CS courses going on at the same time that take up a lot of my attention on things that aren't really that useful (currently a group project that basically barely teaches me anything but does demand a bunch of work from me where I interact with existing code from a company that's not written very well).

I also feel like proper computer science fundamentals would help at all of this and my school has not really done a good job with offering courses like this either. The closest thing to proper CS we've had was an algorithms & data structures course and a network infrastructure course.

I feel like I need to know and want to know so much and it's blowing up my head basically because I'm stuck between wanting CS fundamentals, software architecture theory, networking theory and a bunch of other stuff and at the same time I think math is holding me back as well from understanding some of the theory as well as I should when I did study algorithms & data structures.

And at the same time since I'm slowly getting a feel for actually building software I keep fantasizing about building all these applications that I can probably have a good chance at actually building now that I have a feel for the web at least. But then I feel like studying theory should be more important as it will make the end result of things like this way better..

Does anyone have any tips for how to manage stuff like this? I feel like I'm constantly in a struggle of studying what I actually want to learn and what my school demands of me in terms of stupid classes.

Any organizing techniques? Recommended reading? Tips on improving my math?

[R] MIT CSAIL Uses Deep Generative Model StyleGAN2 to Deliver SOTA Image Reconstruction Results

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 11:58 AM PST

A group of researchers from MIT Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have proposed a simple framework for performing different image reconstruction tasks using the state-of-the-art generative model StyleGAN2.

Here is a quick read: MIT CSAIL Uses Deep Generative Model StyleGAN2 to Deliver SOTA Image Reconstruction Results

The paper Bayesian Image Reconstruction using Deep Generative Models is on arXiv.

Book(s) that delve deep into computer hardware?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 10:12 AM PST

I recently just build a PC, and this got me interested in the hardware side of computing. I want to learn about the history and how it works. Wouldn't mind a lot of books either if they give me a better understanding of the topic. No background in engineering, and only know a tiny amount of programming. Is there a book that I could easily understand?
