Anyone else feel lazy when working remote? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 04:50 AM PST My team got sent home to work remote through February(indefinitely really) about 3 weeks ago. But as a result of working remote I have become very lazy. I'm zoned out on our stand ups - just waiting to end the Zoom call from the moment I connect really. I complete my weekly issues most of the time - but occasionally something has to roll out of complexity. Some days (most days) I just do the bare minimum and my productivity is down. It still meets the minimum - but that's all it meets maybe sometimes slightly more. This sounds childish but I just get too distracted at home and other things sound more fun than pounding away at another React CRUD app. My house is full of stuff regarding my hobbies, I have my pets, my girlfriend works from home regularly, it's just hard to maintain focus and really motivation. Some mornings I boot up my computer and sit there being fully aware that I have to get work done, but at the same moment, I feel the subconscious pull of procrastination that I know is a matter of time before it overcomes me. How do you successful work from home guys do it? Or is it all just a sham and it's okay to work 3-4 hours a day. [link] [comments]

(rant) Why are developers expected to have a (good) github repo by employers? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:14 AM PST My previous company closed doors a few weeks ago (for any freelancers or owners: make sure not to have the public sector as your main client) and I've been job hunting since then. The thing is, I see plenty of job application forms that ask for a github repo and/or personal projects that you're proud of, sometimes the recruiters will ask you for it. I know that it is an easy way to get a good idea of the skills of whoever you might be hiring, but imo, this makes sense mostly for FAANG companies or "rockstar" positions. But way too many small-medium companies or their recruiters ask for repos. It seems to me that for some reason companies expect programmers to have their lives dedicated to it, something I don't see in other industries, most other industries actually like and encourage when people have different hobbies or get involved in different areas. I've been in the industry for over 5 years doing good work and on time with good practices, but I don't have anything in my personal repo; I only had some lame college projects which I had to erase from existence out of shame. I had a project in mind for some time, but I just couldn't get to work on it, though I'm starting now that I'm unemployed and have time and energy for it. But on a full time job, working out, having a healthy balanced lifestyle, in a city with really bad traffic every single hour, there's just not enough time to get home and work again. So, why do companies expect developers to have their lives dedicated to programming? Does it make sense for hiring? I can see how it could help scout for senior or lead positions, but for smaller positions with smaller pay? PS: this rant probably comes from the fact that I think I failed a coding test yesterday. 2 development framework challenges that I had no problem with, but also 2 hard coding challenges, 1 took me plenty of time, the other 1 I just couldn't. Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST I've been a full stack developer for a little over a year now. This was my first job out of college so the first 6 months I spent getting up to speed and learning the application. I switched teams to a different part of the product after the six month mark and it took a month or two to get up to speed on that. While I still feel that I am learning and improving, I mostly feel that I am just getting through my tickets and doing the bare minimum. I try to keep learning new technologies in my free time but, I struggle to decided on what side project I want to build or what technology I want to learn as the options are so limitless. I want to do more/provide more to my company and go above and beyond what is expected of me. I just really have no idea how to do this. Any advice on how to find ways to do this would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]

Where can I learn how to take payments on my website after which users can download digital content? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:55 AM PST Hello, I'm trying to learn how to allow the users of my website to make a payment, after which they would be able to download some digital content. For example, I can set up the PayPal payment button on the website, but I don't know how to verify that a user has paid for a particular product and how to make that digital product available to them for download. I would like to sell digital products without users having to create an account on the website. A simple "buy now" button which takes the users to PayPal payment, after which it provides a download link or even better, emails the download link or file directly to the customer. I'm after learning resources that would teach me this, which I was unable to find on my own. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Why aren't my images loading on iOS? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 04:12 PM PST Hi! I am working on a website and for a while, we are having a big issues: images aren't loading on iOS. They either take 3-4 refresh to start appearing or they don't appear at all. I don't see why they aren't loading, I tried asking on local groups and every answer didn't work. If you can help me solve this, I grant you the title of "Genius". I tried to see the issue on Browserstack but the problem wasn't visible there... Thanks! Coming back to Web Dev after 4 years, what even is going on anymore? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 04:11 PM PST Hello all, I used to be a front end dev, and I changed career focus a while ago (iirc back when Angular2 was just released). This past few months I've had a thought for a Web app I'd like to develop. I've been keeping a little bit up to date with current tech relating to frontend so I knew I wanted to develop the frontend separately front the backend. So I've gone on my merry way of developing the backend in a way that I thought makes sense as an API. It's relatively easy to make adjustments for a frontend app. After doing some research on what the right way is of doing stuff, it seems Web tech have progressed like crazy. It's nowhere near what it used to do. So much so, it felt daunting just to read up on it. So much to read. So much to understand. So much to learn. So I come to you asking for some help. I know the following:
So my questions are:
Thank you in advance! [link] [comments]
CodeWars (Kata) and data structures, are they important for front-end devs? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 04:06 PM PST Hi devs! I have been learning coding for about 8 months now, splitting my time studying javaScript, HTML, CSS, and react.js. I literally learned the technologies in the same order. The first 5 months, I spent them learning and the rest building projects. So far I have 5 projects, including sites that I firstly created in javaScript and then emigrate them into react.js. No from tutorials but from my own initiative. A friend of mine suggested me to learn about data structures and practice javaScript in places like codewars. I have done a few exercises but I really get stuck with most of them.. this actually makes me question if I'm actually understanding the language or I'm a fraud! I feel really down when I sit on my laptop and I can't even write a line of code.. I heard that companies sometimes throw some of these challenges in the interview processes and I have had nightmares with this. Has anyone had a similar situation? what do you guys would recommend me to do so I can improve in this? I know practice makes a master, but I sometimes sit in front of the computer for hours and nothing comes out... How can I learn then? [link] [comments]
How do you discover / search for UI components? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:16 PM PST How do people here find UI components / libraries to use? I'm looking for tips to improve productivity when it comes to looking for components. Seems like there should be an easy way to search / browse lots of different open source components easily, but I couldn't find a site that does this. I.e. I do search Github for components, but those don't always come with good working examples and sometimes end up wasting time Note - I mainly use ReactJS [link] [comments]
Idea validation: Would you manage your infrastructure with a visual SaaS tool? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 03:11 PM PST With the increasing popularity of serverless infrastructures, I've been thinking if there would be value in being able to manage and deploy your entire infrastructure visually. Imagine a drag and drop interface for pulling in AWS services, editing of DynamoDB tables, and easy creation of Lambdas for API endpoints, then one click deploy to staging, prod, etc. Has anyone attempted to do this or would find it valuable? What would your use case be and why might this be useful or not useful? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Dec 2020 03:10 PM PST This tool parses Go files into an AST (abstract syntax tree) and translates it to several programming languages. As of now it is TypeScript, Swift, PHP and JSON output. I have created this tool because it saves me a lot of work and is super powerful.. Unit tests are being worked on, as well as advanced pointer support, but this is already capable of parsing most codebases and already can prove very useful to keep in sync your data models of your Go applications (backend) and consumers (JS / mobile apps / etc). Check it out here: https://github.com/averageflow/godmt and explore the examples I provide. MIT Licensed so feel free to give tips, and contribute! [link] [comments]
Does Anyone Know How I Opened This Chrome Developer Tools Panel? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:53 AM PST Hi guiys! A few weeks ago I hit, or tried to hit, Ctrl+Shift+I, but a dialog box I have never seen before popped up! If you open Chrome developer tools and click Rendering > Frame Rendering Stats from the bottom panel (with options of Console, What's New, Rendering, Performance monitor etc) a grey, 50% translucent box showing Frames, GPU raster and GPU memory is opened. The dialog box I opened without intending too looked similar to this but had info regarding RAM etc and I think I remember clicking and dragging it to move it. I initially thought I had mistyped Ctrl+K as Chtrl+Shift+I but I am so far not able to repeat the behaviour. Can someone help me out here and let me know how to open the Chrome dialog box showing RAM usage etc? Thanks [link] [comments]
Jailing an entire page in a shadowroot Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:29 PM PST Suppose I have a site, running some big, full-fledged app, rife with scripts and styles and whatnot. I need to put it entirely inside another template, giving it an all new header and footer and stuff, but of course it needs to look and run just as it did.The first step was, conveniently, using a plugin that captures the rendered HTML page in a buffer. But what to do next was a puzzle for a while. Then I came up with... this eldritch, tentacled horror. I base64-encoded the whole buffer. It seems to do wonders - it works with <link rel="stylesheet">s, <script>s run only once jailed... It's almost too good to be true. So... tell me, what did I forget that will blow up in my face? :P [link] [comments]

Is it possible to export a Wordpress website as high quality images? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:10 AM PST Hi everyone, I am wanting to export my Wordpress website as images so I can add them to my portfolio. The domain is being repurposed and ultimately we won't be using the Wordpress site any longer. I am not necessarily concerned with the code since it was primarily built with plugins, I just want to demonstrate my design ability. Any tips on how to do this and get high quality images that can be blown up/zoomed-in on? I want to avoid using things like the snipping tool because I would have to zoom out quite a bit to capture entire pages, and zooming in on them would result in a blurry or pixelated image. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Where should index.php and other php files be stored? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:34 PM PST I'm setting up a php website on digitalocean via a linux terminal. Having trouble finding out where to put php files. My site is effectively a login site and all pages are php. So far I've found they can either be in the public folder, the source folder, or htaccess. If so does the root location change or should index.html redirect to index.php? I havent found a definitive answer to my situation. What is best practice? [link] [comments]
