Feedback On My Custom Hex Nav

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 02:45 PM PST

Here is the codepen : https://codepen.io/codeinplace/pen/jOMLyrR

I spent the last two days creating this, that might seem long to some but I am fairly new.

A few things to note that I could use some help on:

    1. If I click to quickly in rapid succession the "charity" menu option still shows.
    2. Most Importantly: why is the Portfolio Nav Item slightly off with a wider spacing than the rest? I really don't get it.
    3. Sometimes the X disappears but that may have been after updating or changing code, I'm not sure.
    4. General feedback: is it cool or stupid? Any design preferences or advice? Is it even worth putting into an actual website?

Creating a Portfolio Website for Client + Headless CMS?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 12:29 PM PST

    Dear Community,

I am new to full-stack web-development. I am quite experienced with HTML, CSS, front-end JavaScript, NodeJS (basics) and PHP-based CMS (WordPress, ProcessWire). Forgive me if any terminology is inconsistent, or based on a non-understanding of the concepts at hand...

I have received a small project from a friend who needs a simple portfolio website, which she can independently edit through a convenient interface (add new projects, update paragraph in About section, etc.). I have spent hours poring different possible scenarios to build this website in a modern, secure, and editor-friendly (for her) way.

I have decided to use a Headless CMS (Strapi for example, thanks for the tip u/LeToasterwy) for the project... Here is where I got a bit stuck: For building the front-end, I have seen people use React, Next.JS, Hugo, Jekyll, Gatsby, and the process of making this (very simple website) is slowly losing coherent sense to me...

I would normally create template pages per the CMS – code the front-end, and fetch the required data from the database by writing PHP intermixed with the HTML.

I am a bit stuck on an economical, modern way to do this with a JSON-based, API, headless approach... I would really appreciate advice on a simple, intuitive, economical workflow to facilitate a well-designed front-end, that is updated with data from the Headless CMS database (that the new data is there as soon as it has been published to the CMS, and the page is reloaded – or within a few minutes, at least).

All input, experiences, workflows extremely appreciated!

Very new to web development. Hope someone can explain this to me.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 09:44 AM PST

I am brand new and getting into web development. When I say getting into, I mean I know not a damn thing. But it is really interesting to me and I would like to learn as much as I can.

Can someone explain to me how a site like slickdeals or even amazon affiliate works? I'm assuming there is some sort of tracker, but how does it exactly work?

    Thank you kind people.

I "need" to start developing something for a portfolio or CV but when I start doing something I'm like "pufff I do it tomorrow"

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 03:08 PM PST

When I get offers they usually ask me if I have some projects to show, but I don't have anything. And I know that I just need to create some shitty good looking apps. But when I open my IDE, I think on making a simple todo app. But I feel like I'm wasting my time with it.

Like I could be doing something cool, going out with friends, find a boyfriend, go to gym, watch some series... But I'm just there resolving the error C03815 in the line 152, searching in Google why a simple get call to the API doesn't even execute, installing the previous version of NET core because the actual one gives a error... (I mean all the shitty task I'm doing always at work, but now for free and just for an app that nobody will use).

So I don't manage to do anything.

This isn't a question or anything similar, just wanted to write it somewhere

    When to use React.js v Raw JS/JQuery?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 02:51 PM PST

I am a noob at React.js, just dipping my toes in the water at the moment. I am just wondering where you draw the line for using React vs Raw JS/JQuery?

I know React is meant for single page apps, but with hooks and states and dynamic content, when is better to use it?

For e.g, making tabs, would you use React for this or JQuery? Or should React only really be used when you need a component that needs to update with the DOM?

Largest Contentful Paint from Lighthouse doesn't make sense?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 02:47 PM PST

I'm working at speeding up my Shopify store. I've started using 'preload' to preload product images on product pages and it seems to be working well from checking Lighthouse's Screenshot Traces. On mobile these product images are essentially the First Contentful Paint; loading a little after the 2second mark, the only other large element above the fold is the logo which comes in around 2.7s.

But the Trace and Lighthouse are saying the LCP is at the 5.5s mark. The performance trace says the LCP related node is something insignificant, generally below the fold and changes each trace. An after pseudo element? Or a pseudo element for a thumbnail? Or a footer div? Or the subscribe div? It does say the LCP is of type Image and 99698 bytes....but the network tab says the largest image is the product image and it's only 84kb????

This seems to be the main hurdle to drastically raising the speed of the website as perceived by Google (I'll look at improving time to interactive next).

Any insight or help would be much appreciated.

Microservices API Documentation with Springdoc OpenAPI

I am helping edit videos for a startup and have a question about products accessible by a link.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST

Hello, wasn't sure where to post this other than here or small business related subreddits. If there's a better place to ask this please let me know. This is quite specific. Our product is essentially a video. Our site is made with wix, so we have the "product" be a document that you download, and that document has a link to an unlisted video on youtube. Our problem is the link is then able to be shared with others and we don't want that obviously. Btw, Wix doesn't allow downloadable videos to be "products" that can be paid for with a card or paypal, and I'm not sure if there is a workaround, so we have been making the product a document with a link to the video. Essentially, is there any way to create a secure video download/viewer that cannot be accessed by others, or is there an easier workaround with Wix to actually just download the video straight from the site when making a purchase? The files are too large for wix even when zipped.

Asking for guidance for future development

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 11:42 AM PST

Wall of text approaching, but I really need to share this with someone that would understand me, so thanks for reading.

I have been a backend dev for the good part of 10 years now. I try to keep myself informed about other parts of web development as well. I've been trying out simple frontend stuff like SCSS, Vuejs, minifying, removing duplicate code etc. A couple of months ago I finally looked into Docker and managed to setup my small side project to run on containers with Docker compose.

However, I (like most of us) feel like this is not enough and I also feel like I just have some random knowledge about random tools. Recently I burned out from work (besides my dev stuff, I also have some management responsibilities), so I took 2 months vacation to chill off from work. In these two months I intend of not doing anyting dev/tech related, so I can reboot and not go crazy.

Recently, I've been having the feeling that I'm not learning enough, not progressing and even forgetting the basics. For example, I have a REALLY hard time remembering basic things like data structures and algorithms, since I don't use them on a daily basis. Sometimes I even can't remember simple things like how session works, how to properly manage it, my web security knowledge is a joke...

I want to learn new stuff more structured in the future, go back to basics etc. (starting next year after my vacation). I would like to ask you guys for help/advice on what to focus on, what are some good tips or even technologies that would help me develop as a developer (dumb pun intended).

Thanks for reading this emotional rant novel. This is really important for me and I want to continue working as a dev in the future, but I just feel like I lost my way and I need help and some guidance.

How to make the rest of the page responsive to the side bar?

I have a side bar on the left of the page that opens and closes. But when it opens it blocks the page content.

Is there any simple way that can fix this. This is my first project and it's for school so please don't overwhelm me with information i haven't studied yet. Only css and javascript if it's possible. Thank you!

Continuous update of price and availability for +10,000 products from amazon.com (affiliate)

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 07:45 AM PST

I'm building a database with +10,000 computer parts (Processors, Motherboards, etc.)

The database is MySQL with name "parts" and tables for each type of part, e.g. a table named "processors"

I am also building an application (iOS) that can be used to build complete PC systems, same as pcpartpicker.com

I have a lot of experience with applications but almost none with networking.

For a start I would like to use amazon.com and become an affiliate.

    1. I must link each product to its respective address on amazon.com
    2. I need to update its price and availability from amazon.com

    Issue No. 1

I think I'll have to add the links to amazon.com manually the same way I made the database. (quite laborious and time consuming process)

    Example

Obviously, the final address will have my affiliate information in it.

But what about links? Is there a chance they will change?

    Issue No. 2

Price and availability (I hope) are the only variables that change quickly and I would like to check them every 10 minutes.

I should start with a simple script (server-side) that updates +10,000 values and availability in MySQL and then from the application (client-side) I should make a query to read them (about 1MB of data) every 10 minutes.

What language should I use to make the script? What should its structure / architecture be like?

    Generally

The right thing to do would be to become an affiliate first, experiment and ask for your help with more data for a well-formulated problem. The reason I ask for your help now is because when I become an affiliate I have a relatively short time window in which I have to make some sales. If it takes me a few months to make it work then, maybe the time limit will pass, I will not have sales and I will be rejected as an affiliate.

I don't care to scale quickly for 10,000 products the right way (without delays etc.) as long as it works it's a good start.

Any help is valuable and welcome.

    Thank you very much.

version control and backups for websites and their databases?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 07:44 AM PST

I am wondering how other people handle version control and/or backups for their website especially when you have a CMS and the majority of all content is within a database and you have more than 1 person updating the website.

Do you do everything with a version control system (I don't think git works very well with databases does it?)? Do you clone the website and make changes, then overwrite the live site with the clone? Or is there some way to merge the clone (and its database) with the live site? Or maybe just save a backup just before making a change directly to the live site?

I tried searching and can't seem to find an elegant solution to this. Just wondering how other people do it.

Why is there no overflow scrollbar showing on my messaging UI?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 11:27 AM PST

I am building my little Messaging UI and I seem to have a problem.

I have my container which has an undertermined height, but has 80px and 60px at the top and the bottom. So, to get the middle section height, I do calc(100% - 140px)
. This is the right size. However, my content overflows at the top and no scrollbar seems to appear. I don't get why this is happening and I don't know how I could fix this.

    Do you have any idea?

Those are Tailwind classes, they are a single use type of class. (tw-flex is ONLY display:flex, etc.) You can understand them pretty easily by only the title.

I need some advice on a web app I’m making for a friend

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 11:05 AM PST

A friend of mine is starting a small business based around yoga and sound therapy. I mentioned that I could help out with her technology needs as I'm a computer science students with a couple developing internships and projects under my belt. One thing she might want is a subscription site for members to make payments and join the group. Where can I find information about safely storing the users credit card information? Would encrypting the information in a database be sufficient? Or should I just not take that on at all and use a site that has templates for subscription sites? I wanna help but I just need some advice. Thanks.
