Indies! How much time do you devote to game dev? Posted: 27 Nov 2020 08:36 AM PST A lot of independent devs have day jobs like myself. I myself jump in and out of projects, but my current is becoming a long term serious project, and I've been ramping up to 30-40 hours a week outside of the day job. How much time do you all spend outside of your day jobs devoted to game dev? [link] [comments]

Is there any free alternative for GameMaker Studio? Posted: 27 Nov 2020 07:34 AM PST GameMaker Studio is a very popular game engine in small indie developers for various reasons like that it has various options and features for both people who have and don't have programing knowledges, I would like to have it and learn to use it, but it has a price, so, my question is, Is there any free alternative to GameMaker Studio with the same (or more) features and options plus that don't requires things like always have an internet connection and a special account sign in? Strategy Game Designers of Reddit, How do AI Make Decisions in Strategy Games? Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:52 AM PST So to preface, this might seem like an odd question, but bear with me. I'm a Naval Officer (Not US Navy) and am planning on doing a Masters in Defence Studies, focusing on constructing quantitative modeling for naval strategy. Most of the literature on naval strategy seems to be qualitative rather than quantitative, and that's a gap, at least for my country, that I want to try to help close. My undergraduate degree is in Economics, so I originally planned to focus on Game Theory. Back when I was in high school, I was a fan of the grand strategy games from Paradox Interactive (CKII and EUIV) and I remembered watching a youtube series where the youtuber just spectated a game full of AI to see how things would play out, and it got me wondering if maybe some of the theoretical framework behind how AI decision making is done could be applied to the real world. I have no programming experience, so that will definitely be a hinderance and, when I have some available time, that is a deficiency that I want to rectify. Any help would be greatly appreciated! The game Breaker's Toolkit jam 4: make the worst possible game! Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:36 AM PST Jam thread: https://itch.io/jam/game-breakers-toolkit-jam-4 This is a 48 hour game making marathon, but spread out around two week-ends so you can choose the best moment to jam. It is focused on bad design, horrible mechanics, and stupid ideas. It runs from November 27th, at 8PM UTC, to December 6th, at midnight. This jam is a parody of the GMTK game jam, which you can learn about here. Here is what you need to know: Who can enter? Anyone, of any age, from anywhere. You can work alone or in teams to make the worst possible game. What is the theme? [Revealed when the jam starts] What can I make my game in? Anything, provided you can upload a file that runs on Windows or browsers. What assets can I use? Absolutely anything, whether you have the right to them or not. Feel free to reuse art or music from the public domain or even from existing games, I don't care. Just make sure you remain somewhat safe for work, as i'll have to make a video showcasing all the games. Although code-wise, I would prefer if you coded everything during the jam time. Who will judge the games? Games can be judged by anyone. I will also play all the games and make a video compilation out of them. I like pain. What will the games be judged on? This is a bad design contest, and anything goes. As a general rule rate more stars on criteria which fail excellently. For instance in the "Ear destruction" category, Final fantasy music would get a 1/5. A game that destroys your eardrums gets a 5/5. Here are the rating criteria:

Using Neural Networks to build enemy ai? Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:25 AM PST I've made a simple 2D game where the player can move and dig around a grid. Yet now I realize that the enemy AI (that would chase the player and also dig) sounds somewhat complex. I've done AI's before but for it to chose either to dig or follow a clear path to chase the player? Idk. Scary. The two other possible ways l considered where making the game multiplayer, or my question, which is, Could I build a neural network that teaches the enemy ai how to move around and dig and jump and chase the player? And then would that be viable for mobile release? or pc? [link] [comments]
Can you be sued for having similar games mechanics to other games? Posted: 27 Nov 2020 01:42 PM PST Is it possible for there to be legal issues with making a game with similar mechanics to other games? Can publishers sue based on "likeness"? An example: If I wanted to design an arcade FPS game that used killstreaks like Call of Duty, could Activision sue me? I have a conceit for a stripped back CoD-like arcade FPS game, that's fast paced and much more competitive. Killstreaks are part of the formula, could I get away with creating such a game? Posted: 27 Nov 2020 01:27 PM PST Hey guys, I'm testing mini game ideas that teach people music production. If I get a good response, I might spend the time to make a bigger game. If you guys have the time I would be super grateful for some feedback. Here is a link to some of the games. They only work on desktop with Google Chrome at the moment. Sorry. [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Nov 2020 05:03 AM PST sO- I'm c r a p at programming, but I'm even worse at working with people whoops. I'm not very articulate, and I get nervous about replying to them, in case I say something wrong or weird. So as I'd love to make a game, I thought I better learn to program, and after researching what language to use, python seemed like a good idea. So, any advice on how to use python (I have pygame too dw) to make a platformer? Also any free music making programs are super appreciated!! Ty in advance :) [link] [comments]
Starting a company as a hobby? Posted: 27 Nov 2020 06:35 AM PST would it be possible to start a gaming company as a hobbyist? Or is that just ridiculous? I want to make free games, but I'm clueless on the business aspect of it. Would there be taxes on free games? I'd just want to start a company so I could upload a game to the PlayStation network, probably when ps5 comes out. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
