Your Single-Page App Is Now A Polyfill Posted: 08 Oct 2020 11:30 AM PDT
Posted: 08 Oct 2020 12:17 PM PDT Hi y'all, Been having some doubts of what my "passion" is and the career I chose. For context, I'm a junior dev focusing mainly on front end stuff for about 2 years now. Been with my current agency for little under 6 months. I've just been hanging by a thread lately. Don't know if this is what people call burn out since I am still fairly new in the field compared to mid/senior devs. But every day I wake up dreading work. I just feel like I am always expected to be at 100%. I have to always be thinking hard about my tasks (however, I'm aware this might just be my inexperience or inadequate skills as a dev) and keeping this up for 8 hours kills. I hardly have any meeting during the week and despite popular opinion, I enjoy meeting as it gives me a break from coding and I get to actually talk to people. On top of that, I hate the concept of timers and estimates in web dev. Maybe this is just my experience with the agencies and start ups I have be a part of but I get so stressed having to quantify each single task I do for work. Like something I estimate 4-6 hours might have unforeseen complications I didn't know about and it ends up being an 8-10 hours task. Especially dealing with third party scripts/widgets. It also doesn't help that they expect me to come up with full detailed estimates in no more than 1 hour; sometimes for full custom design pages. At my current job, im expected to track down to the second on how long I spend on each thing and I'm expected to have close to 7 hours logged each day. 1 hour is allotted for the two 15min breaks and 45 mins of replying to clients, emails, etc. I've been feeling bad about how far off I am on estimates that I've been making up the time off work. I know I shouldn't but I can't help but to think it's just my incompetence and my failure of being able to be focused for 8 hours. It also doesn't help that when I ask my lead to review my estimate he often says "a good experienced dev would know how long something would take" Is this just not for me? Is it my choice of companies I've been a part of? A combination of the both? Any feedback is appreciated. [link] [comments]

HTML in e-mails: best practices and no-gos? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 11:51 AM PDT I need to turn a series of google docs made e-mail signatures into HTML, as to avoid display errors in many e-mail clients. When I google this issue I see a lot of "e-mail signature generators" but I don't want that. I want to code my own, I know HTML and CSS but I don't know what are the minimal specs required — can I use flex? Grid? Should I go back a hundred years and do tables? Is there a boilerplate or way to know how I should do it? [link] [comments]
How to pitch TO developers and developing site mockup? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 11:48 AM PDT I am looking for a developer/agency to build a medium to complex website for me. I know in order to get accurate estimates I will want to create a detailed description of the site from pages to features. What I am wondering is how I should format this information? I'm wondering how you developers like your 'proposals' to look. What things should I be careful not to miss that are often overlooked? Also I would like to know if there are resources out there for building website mockups. In other words I would like to create something of a visual form of the site to show to potential clients and investors. As I am creating this myself I do not expect it to function at all; something to drag and drop website features and export as an image would be fine. [link] [comments]
Why do people have a negative opinion about PHP? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 07:02 AM PDT Disclaimer: I am not here to rant or declare the superiority of a specific language/system/framework etc. all I want is to have a civil talk with other devs that may or may not have a different opinion. So please, don't turn the comment section into a warzone. Thanks Hi, I am a somewhat new backend web developer that comes from a system programming/game dev background. When I was doing my research about which backend language should I choose, I found out about PHP and liked it. Other options wereJS-based Node.js which I didn't quite like. I am not a frontend dev so neither It's being a JS-based nor its other features didn't make me interested. After making a few projects with PHP, I started to like it even more. When talking to other web devs, reading articles, watching Youtube videos, or browsing programming memes (I know, it's not the best place to learn), It occurred to me that most people look like they hate PHP. So I researched about the reasons and most of them blame it for 'Bad Security' and I can't understand this point. People accused it because of having 'Potential XSS exploit' which could be solved by just feeding the input from the user to a function ( [link] [comments]

Need Help with some website things. Posted: 08 Oct 2020 03:38 PM PDT I don't do website design at all, but I've been trying to figure out how to make a website similar to the Wix Logo Maker one in regards to being able to edit premade templates. If you know of any way to achieve this please tell me. [link] [comments]

.dev and HSTS preload. A small performance boost for .dev and other TLDs. Posted: 08 Oct 2020 11:14 AM PDT I've started writing about web dev stuff I learn about, this is the first post. TL;DR — The .dev TLD has the advantage of being on the HSTS preload list, without needing a strict-transport-security header. Giving your site a small performance boost. I first heard about this watching Andrew Betts talk Headers for Hackers from Performance.now(), it's a good talk. What is HSTS?HSTS (http strict transport security) is an http header. It lets a website tell the browser to only connect to it via https. This helps prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. It also reduces load times for users trying to connect via http. Their browser will automatically upgrade their connection to https instead of your server redirecting them. However, the browser can only know about your site's HSTS policy once it's already accessed it once. So if the initial request to your site is via http, there is still a risk. This is where HSTS preload comes in… HSTS PreloadHSTS preload allows you to make sure browsers always connect via https, even when connecting to your website for the first time. Appending When a user navigates to your site for the first time, most browsers will check this list. If your site is on the list, the user will upgraded to HTTPS. .devAny domain with the .dev TLD are by default in the HSTS preload list. This means you get the security and performance of having the strict-transport-security header, with the bonus of not actually needing the header. So, by using .dev you can save 71 bytes in every response from your site, and stop the client from parsing an unnecessary header. Other domainsAs well as .dev, all of Google's other TLDs are automatically on the HSTS preload list. Here's the complete list of availble google TLDs (as of 8 October 2020):

Is there any website which will give me projects implement my skills in Web development? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 05:51 AM PDT I'm currently doing a web development course and I wanna test and implement my knowledge by doing projects. Static vs Dynamic website for an online database Posted: 08 Oct 2020 02:34 PM PDT Let's say I want to create IMDb 2.0. Is it a bad idea to host it as static website? Yes I'm new to web development. Currently some schoolmates and I are planning to create a website like IMDb for a school project, and we're almost sure we're going to be using static pages, we prefer to not get into the hosting stuff because of the evaluation type we'll receive. But we would also like to host it on public Internet on the future, so if changing from static to dynamic is very complex we may be reconsidering our choice. We are going to use Blazor if that helps. Need advice - which of the 2 hosting options should I chose for wordpress websites? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 02:29 PM PDT I cant figure out if there is any significant difference. I posted on /webhosting but didnt receive much info on those 2. I just dont understand the specifics listed, can someone read them and tell me if one is better that the other for any reason or im good to go with whichever? It is 6.67$ on top of the price of DO It is cheaper as it is 2 in one price and the overpricing of DO prices is very slight. They said they can provide free cPanel, free SSL, and help create local backing up and they can help scale it up when needed. (links show their plans and specifications) -------- I came to these 2 options because I have no knowledge of server managing. But the thing is that I dont have enough knowledge of stuff hosting related too. All the specifications listed on their websites are like chinese to me. So having in mind that I only want to care about managing my wordpress websites and nothing outside them, do you think one is better than the other for any reason? What are the differences if any? Important aspects are scaling up as needed (i expect high traffic in the future); security; user friendly; backing up; using more than 1 wordpress website. This is my final step in chosing so I would be very very grateful for opinions. But also if you think there is a better fully managed VPS/cloud option out there you can share it. (I did look into Cloud ways, but it gets much more expensive for the same service when scaling up the plan as it more than doubles what you pay for DO) THANK YOU! edit - i added the questionnaire if someone needs the details about my project:

Looking for a payment gateway that lets me accept payments (I'm under 18) Posted: 08 Oct 2020 02:27 PM PDT Is there any payment gateway that I can use for my app to accept payments keeping in mind I'm under 18? I was thinking about going with PayPal using my parents' account but I see some complaints that PayPal just decided to ban people and not return their money so it scares me. Stripe is unfortunately not an option as it is not available in my country. Thanks [link] [comments]

What's the best shared hosting service for a small low-traffic site? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 01:20 PM PDT Hi! I've made a website for advertising furniture and related services. It's small (only 4 pages), does not store any sensitive data (no transactions occur on the site, no user accounts or anything). I'm new to this and looking through hosting services is a bit overwhelming. I've already bought a domain. I don't think I need much space. Extensive security is not essential I suppose but would be nice to have some?Uptime is the priority if anything, and I do need Node.js support. What would be a good affordable hosting service for this? Or should I run my own server on a raspberry pi or something? Thanks for your time. :) [link] [comments]
Difficulty accessing Twitter's API to search for tweets (React) Posted: 08 Oct 2020 01:16 PM PDT 'Access to fetch at 'https://api.twitter.com/1.1/search/tweets.json?q=test&count=1' from origin 'http://localhost:3000' has been blocked by CORS policy: Response to preflight request doesn't pass access control check: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. If an opaque response serves your needs, set the request's mode to 'no-cors' to fetch the resource with CORS disabled.' I'm still new to using APIs. so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Cost effective way to send out 1 million email newsletters daily? Posted: 08 Oct 2020 01:03 PM PDT Basically what the title says. Everywhere I look for that volume - has to be some exclusive deal with the saas platform north of 100k a year. Established platforms like marketing cloud would be near 300k a year. Prior to the 2nd job search is it more valuable to spend time on algorithms or new technologies Posted: 08 Oct 2020 12:12 PM PDT Would you guys advise a junior developer looking for a salary increase at the end of year 1, maybe month 18, to devote more study time to algorithms, or other helpful technologies? At the moment I know intermediate Typescript, React.js, Express.js and SQL. And surrounding ecosystem techs.
I lean towards algorithms since tech companies put so much emphasis on them during interviews. [link] [comments] |
